LUCKY STIFF
In 2015, the New College Students’ Association
(NCSA) staged it’s 5th musical production since
the inaugural production of The Pirates of Penzance
in 2006. It is a testimony to the success of these
productions that the NCSA has now been putting on
a musical every second year since 2009. This year,
the directors, Sam Kellahan and Lauren Sullivan, and
producers, Madeline Hopkins and Scarlett Stemler,
worked with a dedicated cast and crew to entertain
audiences with the comedic murder mystery, Lucky
Stiff, across three performances from May 7th-9th.
Lucky Stiff was written by Lynn Ahrens and
Stephen Flaherty and based on the novel ‘The Man
Who Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo’ by Michael
Butterworth. The story revolves around an unassuming
English shoe salesman, Harry Witherspoon, who is
forced to take the embalmed body of his recently
murdered uncle, on an all-expenses-paid vacation to
Monte Carlo. Should he succeed in passing his uncle
off as alive, Harry Witherspoon stands to inherit six
million dollars. Watching his every move is Annabel
Glick, representative of the Universal Dog Home of
Brooklyn, and his uncle’s gun-toting ex, Rita Laporta,
who both stand to inherit his uncle’s fortune should
Harry fail.
The offbeat, yet hilarious story was brought to
life by the talented cast of collegians starring Ryan
Milham as Harry Witherspoon, and Hayley Mallinder
as Annabel Glick in the lead male and female roles.
The cast worked with vocal managers, Simon Grace
and Tash Atkins, and were accompanied by a 12
piece band ensemble, lead by John Raineri and Dom
Bower.
