ALUMNI FOCUS BRENT O’CARRIGAN awarded the prestigious Sir John Monash Scholarship Brent O’Carrigan was a resident of New College in 2001-2002. He has been awarded the prestigious Sir John Monash Scholarship. The first time the Sir John Monash Scholarship was awarded to a New Collegian was when Sam Wills (NC 2003-05) was a recipient in 2009. One of Australia’s most prestigious scholarships, the Sir John Monash Scholarship recognises leadership capability, academic excellence, and potential contribution to Australia. The Scholarships, which have been awarded annually for the past 12 years, provide recipients with financial assistance of $60,000 a year, as well as an international return trip via Singapore Airlines, to undertake post graduate studies at any of the world’s leading universities. The Scholarships honour Sir John Monash, regarded as Australia’s finest military and civic leader. A civil engineer and lawyer, Sir John Monash was the most successful and admired generals on the Western Front in World War One. In public life his achievements included leading the electrification of Victoria in the 1920’s. He was also Vice Chancellor of the University of Melbourne; and helped found 8 New’n’Old 2014/2015 both the CSIRO and the Shrine of Remembrance. In 2007, Brent graduated with BSc, MBBS (1st class Hons) at UNSW. After leaving New College, he was awarded the Bryan Hudson AO Medal for the Royal Australian College of Physicians specialty examinations in 2012, and trained in medical oncology at Royal Prince Alfred and Concord Hospitals and the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse. He concurrently completed a Masters in Medicine at University of Sydney. Brent’s wife, Dr Aditi Vedi, is a paediatric oncology specialty registrar. At the beginning of 2015 they moved to the United Kingdom where they both work in early phase cancer drug development at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London for 12 months. From March 2016, both Brent and Aditi will start Ph.D.s in cancer research at Cambridge University. Aditi’s research will focus on children’s leukaemia. Brent will join a research group in Cambridge focusing on breast cancer. In particular, it will focus on how to measure microscopic ‘circulating’ tumour DNA in blood as distinct from normal DNA, and use it as a measure or ‘residual disease’ to guide treatment for breast and other solid cancers. Brent says, “I warmly remember when we shared time at New College – many friends from varied fields and robust, inspiring round table dinner conversations, not to mention fish and chip Fridays! My brother (Simon O’Carrigan, New College, 2003) and sister (Phoebe O’Carrigan, NCV, 2012) also enjoyed their time at New College. New College wishes to congratulate Brent on this significant achievement and wishes he and Aditi all the very best as they undertake such valuable research.
DR NAADIR JUNAID a gifted alumni in the Arts XXXX ALUMNI FOCUS Dr Naadir Junaid (NCV 2009-13) is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism at University of Dhaka and an alumnus of New College Village. Naadir has been awarded the “Australian Alumni Excellence Award 2015 for Endeavour Scholarships and Fellowships.” The Australian Government confers this award on gifted alumni of Australian universities with a view to recognizing their accomplishments in their chosen fields upon completion of their studies in Australia. Naadir received the Award in a programme organized in Dhaka by the Australian High Commission in Bangladesh. He earned his Ph.D. in Media, Film and Theatre from UNSW. “New College Village was my home during my Ph.D. years. I started living in NCV from February 2009, and I left this place in May 2013 after the submission of my Ph.D. thesis.” Naadir says, “I spent some important years of my life in NCV and I often cherish the fond memories of my days there. I remember the warm and friendly atmosphere of the place, the area of scenic beauty that I used to see from my balcony, the thoroughly enjoyable moments we spent during cultural nights, formal dinners, and harbour cruises, and the charming company of my friends. My four-year stay in NCV enabled me to meet many lovely people from different parts of the world, and I feel so glad that I made some beautiful and lifelong friendships during that period of my life. The environment of NCV was very congenial to private study, and I also had the important opportunity to discuss my work with other Ph.D. students and to receive their feedback on my thesis. I found my NCV days most delightful and the pleasant memories of those days cannot be forgotten.” Before coming to Australia, Naadir studied Mass Communication and Journalism at University of Dhaka and he secured first position in both BA (Honours) and MA. He was awarded three gold medals from University of Dhaka for his outstanding academic achievements. Upon completion of his studies in Dhaka University, he earned a master’s degree in Film Studies from King’s College, University of London as a Commonwealth Scholar.
