John’s Jottings
Welcome to Woodstock Park from The Club Secretary
Good afternoon everyone and welcome to Woodstock Park.
Our visitors are Chatham Town. It’s great to see them back in the Ryman South after
a couple of financially challenging seasons in the Ryman North. Something we
had to endure a few seasons back. Welcome to their Players, Officials and supporters.
Thanks to our president, Alan Crowshaw, who is kindly sponsoring today’s match.
We have already played Chatham once this season when we won a close fought
league cup match in the last few minutes with a goal from Hicham Akhazzan.
Like us, Chatham are finding things difficult. This is a really important game for both
teams. We continued our poor run on Tuesday night after losing a match (yet again)
by the odd goal. We played much better than of late and I felt we continued the improvement
we showed when playing Molesey. At least a point for us would have
been a fair result in both games. This is the first of three matches that are crucial to
us moving away from danger. After Chatham is an away match at South Park and
next Saturday we travel to Peacehaven & Telscombe for a real 6 pointer.
As I wrote in my notes in the last programme please remember that if you wish to
purchase goods from Amazon please do it via the left hand column on our web site.
Just click on the Amazon link and it takes you to the normal front page of Amazon.co.uk
but by using this link we get commission on a purchase. You pay exactly
the same as if you went directly to Amazon.co.uk.
If you wish to sponsor a match please see any committee member. Thanks to our
sponsor on Tuesday, Brian Carey a partner with UHY Hacker Young who are accountants
whose office is in Roman Square, Sittingbourne.
We are, as I am sure you know, in the Quarter Finals of the League cup. This tie
will be played here at Woodstock on Tuesday 5 th January and our opponents are
Tooting & Mitcham. The other quarter final ties are, Enfield Town V Wingate &
Finchley, Faversham Town V Dorking Wanderers and Leiston V Kingstonian. Interestingly
then four teams come from the Premier Division and four teams from Ryman
South. This match will replace our scheduled away tie against Walton & Hersham.
The match at Walton & Hersham will be played on Tuesday 12 th January.
Next match for us is on Wednesday at South Park. That is followed by the must win
match at Peacehaven and then another away match on Tuesday 22nd December
at Dorking Wanderers. Our next home match is on Monday 28 th December ( a Bank
Holiday). This is against Ramsgate and is a 3:00pm kick off.
Have a great Christmas and thank you for supporting our great club. With your support
we can turn around our fortunes and look forward to a Happy New footballing
Year.
From the Chairman
A merry Christmas to you and your family.
The first half Tuesday night was the best we have played in a very long time. Considering
our performances of late it was a good crowd.
Sure decisions go against you when you have a bad run but I believe you make
your own luck. Results have to change as relegation would be a disaster so we all
need to pull together. Thanks to our fans who are always fantastic and stick with us
through good or bad.
Looking at the fixtures I think this week is the most important in my time as Chairman,
todays game at home to Chatham Home, South Park Away next Wednesday
and finally Peacehaven away the following Saturday. The two sides immediately
above us are not in good form, and with our games in hand we can catch them.
Let's all have one big effort to get behind the lads for a big week.
The team are improving with the new players but they need to play without fear
now and have a right go!
CHATHAM TOWN— A BRIEF HISTORY
The club was formed in 1882 as Chatham United, when Rochester
Invicta merged with the football team of the Royal Engineers Band
with the intention of creating a side that was capable of holding their
own with the best in the country. Harry Hobart's plan being to bring
together all the best players in the Medway Towns in one team.
They played their first match on 7th October that year, beating Harley
Street F.C. 4-0. Owing to their strong Army connections, Chatham
soon moved to a regular home on "The Lines", where they
were to remain until 1889 - the beginning of season 1889/90 seeing
them move to "Alderman Winch's Enclosed Ground", or as it is now
better known, the Maidstone Road Ground.
Having been formed with an eye to competing in the F.A. Cup, they
went on to reach the Quarter-Finals in 1888-89 - famously defeating
Nottingham Forest after two replays, only to lose to the holders
West Bromwich Albion. This game, which was played on "The
Lines" where an admission fee could not be charged owing to Army
regulations, was instrumental in the decision by the Football Association
that all future matches in the competition must be played on
fully enclosed grounds, where the visiting club would receive a
share of the gate money.
In 1894 Chatham were founder members of both the Southern
League and the original Kent League, becoming the first winners of
the latter competition. They were also winners of the Kent F.A.
Badge in the three seasons it was contested, and the first winners
of its successor, the Kent Senior Cup, in 1888/89. They also became
the first club to win the Thames and Medway Combination,
the direct predecessor of the present Kent League, in 1896/97.
Chatham were forced to resign from the Southern League during
the 1900/01 season, owing to financial difficulties, but they soon
rebuilt the club - playing as Chatham Amateurs for a brief spell in
1901 - before winning both the Kent League and Thames & Medway
Combination in 1903/04 without losing a single game in either
competition. They repeated the feat the following season, losing
just three games, whilst also defeating Sittingbourne 3-1 in the Final
of the Kent Senior Cup.
The First World War brought an end to football in the Medway
Towns, but Chatham were one of the first clubs locally to return to
action in 1919 - winning both the Kent Victory Cup and the Chatham
Charity Cup (for the eighth time) in a shortened season. They
briefly rejoined the Southern League in 1920/21, after the formation
of a Third Division for the Football League had taken half its' members,
but once again withdrew at the end of the season finding that
the increased travel costs were a severe drain on finances.
They once again had some success in the F.A. Cup during the
1920s, reaching the Second Round Proper in 1926/27 before losing
to Norwich City - who beat them again, this time in the First Round
Proper in 1928/29. They also reached the First Round Proper in
1925/26 and 1927/28, losing to Sittingbourne and Kettering Town
respectively.
A third spell in the Southern League, starting in 1927/28 almost
finished the club. They stuck it out for two seasons this time, but
once again the increased expenses - coupled with dwindling attendances
- saw them drop back into the Kent League. Things were to
get progressively worse, and 1933/34 saw the club take voluntary
relegation into Division Two of the Kent League, which they won in
1934/35 without accepting promotion, before opting to revert to
Amateur status. Having played in both the Kent League and Kent
Amateur League in 1938/39, they decided to play in just the latter
competition the following season - only to see all football suspended
with the beginning of World War Two. They played just one
game that season, beating London Paper Mills 2-0 on 26th August -
and would not play again until 1946.
Post War, Chatham won the Premier Division of the Kent Amateur
League in 1946/47, which was to be their last honour under that
name - having previously dropped the 'United' in 1898. On 7th
January 1947 they merged with Shorts F.C., the combined club
taking the name Chatham Town at the request of the local Council,
and a place in Division One of the Kent League for the following
season. There they were to remain until the League disbanded in
1959, whereupon they moved to the newly formed Aetolian League.
During this latter period they appeared in the Aetolian League Cup
Final in each of the five seasons it was contested, though winning
only once in 1962/63. The following year they finally captured the
League Championship, as well as the Aetolian/London League Cup
and then, when the Aetolian League formally merged with the London
League they moved to the Metropolitan League, in 1964/65, in
search of stronger opposition.
Although the club were drawing crowds of up to 1,000 playing
against strong Non-League opponents as well as sides from Arsenal,
Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United, they lost no time in
returning to the Kent League when it was reformed in 1968. Up
until their return to the Southern League in 1983, they had won the
Kent League on four further occasions, completing the League and
Cup double in both 1971/72 and 1977/78.
For a brief period during the seventies they changed their name to
Meway F.C., again at the request of the local Council, but happily
reverted back to Chatham Town in 1979. In 1980 they achieved
their biggest post-war success to date in winning the Eastern Professional
Floodlight League, playing against some of the strongest
Non League clubs of the day, including Maidstone United, and defeating
Chelmsford City in the Final over two legs.
In 1983 Chatham returned to the Southern League for the fourth
time, this time staying there until 1988, when having failed to gain
re-election they were relegated back to the Kent League - once
again in severe financial difficulties, with crowds often in double
figures against poorly supported clubs, as opposed to the much
healthier attendances they had enjoyed in the Kent League against
more local opposition.
After struggling during their first couple of seasons back in the Kent
League, the real turnabout in the clubs' fortunes came with the appointment
of popular former player John Adams as First Team
manager, however despite reaching the Third Qualifying Round of
the F.A. Cup in 1993/94, taking the club to the Final of the Kent
Senior Trophy in 1995/96 and finishing in the top three of the Kent
League for three successive seasons, he was dismissed by the
club following a disastrous start to the 1996/97 season.
1997/98 was to prove one of the most difficult seasons in the club's
history. Problems with a new drainage system meant that only a
handful of games could be played at Maidstone Road - which led to
a brief return to their "spiritual home" on the Lines, courtesy of the
Royal Engineers, as well as a brief ground-share with Gillingham at
Priestfield Stadium. The club returned home for the 1998/99 season
under new manager Carl Laraman, fortunes improving immediately
before in January Laraman left to take up a coaching position
at Charlton Athletic. His assistant, Steve Hearn, was appointed
player-manager and finally led the club to the Kent League Championship,
and promotion to the Dr. Martens League, in 2000/01.
The club enjoyed a good start to their first season back at this level,
but a poor run of results at the end of the season led to Steve
Hearn's resignation and the appointment of his assistant Peter Coupland
as his successor. After a bad start to the 2003/04 season,
Clive Walker replaced Coupland. Things improved dramatically,
and a season that had looked certain to end in relegation, ended
instead with Chatham in a mid-table position.
The 2004/05 season saw Chatham being placed in the newly
formed Southern League Eastern Division. The campaign got off to
a promising start, with Chatham sitting as high as fourth in early
October, however a poor run of results coupled with Clive Walker's
decision to return to his old club Dover Athletic, saw the Chats slip
to 16th. Assistant Steve Binks was appointed manager and results
improved towards the tail end of the season. Chatham finished the
season in 11th place, and was Kent's highest placed club.
Following yet another Pyramid reshuffle, the next few seasons saw
the club ping-pong between the Ryman League North and South
Divisions with regular mid table positions. Frustratingly the club
experienced regular wins against top six and promoted sides but
often followed up with defeats to bottom six sides. Season 2006/07
saw Phil Miles - another popular former player - move up to take
over as Manager. December 2007 saw Phil stand down due to work
commitments with Steve Binks taking over the job again, then to be
followed by 1 st team coach Alex O’ Brien stepping up for the 2009-
10 campaign. Throughout this period the club's strong youth policy
provided several new established first team players and the club
also achieved the coveted FA charter Standard award.
Season 2010-11 saw the club struggle on the pitch with Manager
Paul Foley resigning in the final weeks of the season with Player
coach Kevin Watson taking over. After achieving some great results
Kevin was appointed to his first Managerial position at the age of 30
after four seasons Kevin resigned following a run of poor results but
left the club with a legacy of some very good players for the new
incoming Manager Kevin Horlock in October 2015, the club are now
back playing in Division 1 South of the Ryman League, after four
seasons in the North, Vice-Chairman Barry Adams instigated significant
improvements to the playing surface so both of which will
hopefully lead to better times ahead for the “Chats..
From the Programme editor
Hello everyone and a warm welcome to our friends from Chatham Town. It’s good to see you
back with us in the Ryman League Division 1 South after a couple of seasons in “exile”!
Todays game is exactly half way through the season and we need to pick up points now. I was
talking to the Whitstable Town chairman Gary Johnson and he believes that they need 50
points to be sure of safety from relegation, that’s 43 more than they have at present, with them
having 21 games left to play, and that’s a massive ask. Personally I don’t believe that they need
that many points and the Oystermen, indeed any Kent team, would be a real loss to us as the
Kent rivalry brings us much needed extra spectators and therefore cash!
My only fond memory of the Molesey game was the cheeseburger. It was very tasty and the
bun was hot! It got me wondering which
ground (other than our own) serves the best
food. Certainly the best soup is served here
at Woodstock!
EQUALITY -
I have to confess that the secretary and I
often went to Molesey in the 1960’s to
watch Hampton, the team we supported at
the time. The ground has since been turned
round as it used to run parallel with the
main road, but apart from that it is little
changed from those days. The chairlady
made us feel very welcome. She is not only
chairperson, but also the first team secretary
and also secretary of two of the youth
teams, there’s dedication for you.
Thanks to Paul Golding for arranging a club
meal, and thanks of course to Phil the excellent
chef and to Mick the barmen.
The meal was excellent and I’m sure that all
that went enjoyed it.
A very merry Christmas to you all and thank
you for buying our programme, every penny
of the cover cost goes into the club!
Match Reports
By Tony Rickson
The abiding memory of this 12th successive
league defeat for Sittingbourne came in the 88th
minute when Jono Richardson lifted his shot over
the bar with the goal at his mercy.
This is not digging Jono out, because he’s been
an outstanding player for Sittingbourne who always
gives 100 per cent. But his miss summed
up their day, as of all the defeats they’ve suffered
this was probably the game they went closest to
getting something from.
I thought they were the better side in the first half
and they certainly finished the second half on
top, going so close to pulling something out of
the bag against a Molesey team who have now
won nine out of their eleven home games this
season.
But the Brickies trekked home from Surrey with
nothing to show for it again, and although they’ve
still got more than half a season left to recover
some form, they need to start picking up results
very soon.
On a grey blustery day, Sittingbourne showed
two changes from the team that lost to high-flying
Worthing on Tuesday night. Young striker Jordan
Wells, signed from Folkestone in the deal that
saw top scorer Harry Smith go the other way,
came straight in for his debut, while Billy French
returned in defence.
Down to substitute went Steven Ita and Stefan
Wright.
Going downhill in the first half, Sittingbourne occasionally
overhit the ball trying to get their two
strikers in behind the defence, but they were certainly
well in the game.
Miles Cornwell, who worked tirelessly up front
alongside the promising Wells, had the best
chance of the half when Ollie Bankole sent him
clear but the keeper saved a left-foot drive with
his legs.
At the other end, George Crimmen led strong
resistance and the only time the defence got
breached, Adam Molloy made a good diving
save.
Sittingbourne must have come out for the other
second half feeling this was a game they could
really get something from, but so, too, did Molesey
perhaps, as within two minutes they were
ahead.
The home side worked the ball down the right
and cut it back from the byline for the experienced
Palmer to hit a clever shot inside the post.
The game became much more stretched with
Wells shooting wide and then being foiled by the
keeper and Hicham Akhazzan sending a freekick
past the near post.
Molesey were more dangerous, too, and in between
picking up five second half bookings for
offences ranging from deliberate handball to elbowing
and time-wasting, they forced another
good save out of Molloy and Palmer put a great
chance over the bar on the turn.
Into the last 10 minutes and the game was still
wide open but Molesey looked to have assured
themselves of the win when the outstanding
McShane ran in behind the defence and scored
an excellent second goal.
But back came Sittingbourne and lively sub Stef
Wright got his throw-in beyond all the big men
and right across the goal for another sub, Ita, to
get a simple first goal for the club.
The drama wasn’t over as with Cornwell suddenly
finding space in the channels, it was all Sittingbourne
with Molesey desperately hanging on.
Crimmen just failed to get a vital touch in front of
goal on one chance, Richardson blasted his
great opportunity over, and Cornwell got in another
low cross from the right that went right
across the face of the goal with nobody able to
add a finishing touch.
So near yet so far, and Sittingbourne’s wait for
their first point since September drags on …
Our core business is to provide cost management services
to the construction industry. Our client base includes
subcontractors, contractors, corporates, private
businesses and public sector organisations. We adopt
industry accepted approaches to cost management/
procurement. We apply these diligently and conscientiously
to each project.
Our staff regularly undertake CPD training and university
studies in order to keep abreast of developments
in the industry. In addition to our collective experience
and expertise, Our software systems enable us to deliver
efficient services to our clients. We are also currently
looking at ways in which we can further benefit
our clients using Building Information Model [BIM].
Many of QS Consults’ clients are already involved in the construction industry with
our services complementing their own. By way of example with public sector clients
we can prepare cost studies (including market testing) to enable them to make
more informed decisions regarding proposed projects and estates strategies.
On the other hand for contractors and sub-contractor’s we provide estimating and
tendering services allowing them to focus on their core business of delivering construction
projects. Just some of our projects are shown below:
Some clients we work with may have never been involved in construction before
and may be considering a one-off construction project. As quantity surveyors we
can provide guidance on managing costs and how to minimise costs risks associated
with construction projects. Some clients we work with may have never been involved
Sittingbourne Herne Bay , att 102
Yet another 2-1 defeat, and yet another bitter
disappointment for Sittingbourne after
looking so good for much of this Kent derby.
It’s not too optimistic to say that this rejigged
Sittingbourne side are improving, but
the results don’t show it yet as another
three points went begging.
Once more the energy levels and commitment
were good, but two more second half
goals were conceded as Sittingbourne
failed to hang on to a deserved half-time
lead.
This was a 13th successive league defeat
for Sittingbourne and it meant Herne Bay
have done the double over them this season
on their way to
mounting a serious play-off challenge.
Sittingbourne made three changes to the
team that lost at Molesey on Saturday –
yes, that was 2-1, too. Vincente Mansanet
came in for his debut in goal in place of Adam
Molloy, and Stefan Wright and Steven
Ita
were recalled instead of Hicham Akhazzan
and Miles Cornwell. Up front, recent signing
Jordan Wells was making his home debut.
Sittingbourne made a positive start against
a Herne Bay team who had kept a clean
sheet for an impressive six games before
this.
George Crimmen headed narrowly wide
from an early Tom Brunt corner and Josh
Wisson, who had an excellent first half,
forced a decent save from
Delo from at least 20 yards out. At the other
end Bay had few chances though Cutts did
hit the bar and
Mansanet had to tip a goalbound header
over his own bar.
Sittingbourne’s first half enterprise brought
them a deserved lead on 38 minutes when
Wisson crossed from the left and Ita forced
home the ball at the far post at his second
attempt.
So that was Bay’s proud record of not conceding
in more than 1,000 minutes blown,
and by a player who was with them until a
couple of weeks ago. For Ita it was his second
close range goal in four days.
Sittingbourne had just about edged the first
half but Herne Bay emerged a more determined
side for the second half and seemed
to be helped along
by a whole succession of refereeing decisions
that somehow always went their way.
With Billy French enjoying a good game in
defence, Sittingbourne looked hard to
breach but Bay equalised midway through
the half when a long diagonal ball from the
left was driven in at the far post by Williams.
And within four minutes they’d won it. A
quick burst down the right ended with a
cross whipped in for ex-Sittingbourne striker
Mark Lovell to score an excellent winner
with a powerful header.
Sittingbourne rallied, just as at Molesey on
Saturday, and forced a couple of mad
scrambles in front of the Bay goal, but the
closest they came was when Wisson powered
in a low drive that bounced out off the
post.
Credit to Bay for the way they managed the
game and turned it round, but poor old Sittingbourne
just can’t get a break at the moment.
Their season doesn’t reach the halfway
point until Saturday, so there’s still plenty of
time to mount a recovery from third bottom.
This was another performance when they
weren’t at all bad, but they just weren’t quite
good enough to get something out of the
game.
