WEEKEND HAPPENINGS
Strawberry Festival
The East Bangor United Methodist Community Church
will host a "Strawberry Festival" on Friday, June 6th
starting at 4:00 PM. It will be held at the Blaine Reimel
Memorial Park on Park Road in East Bangor (rain or
shine). Lots of good food and "Jacktown" ice cream.

Singles' Ministry will be meeting at 6:30 PM during this
event. The ministry is open to all singles, divorcees,

Slate Belt YMCA 5K Run & Fun Walk
The Slate Belt YMCA will be holding its Annual 5K Run
and Fun Walk on Saturday, June 7th, 2014 at the Blue

Formation of the Slate Belt Regional Police Department

The Boroughs of Wind Gap and Pen Argyl along with Plainfield
Township are proud to announce the formation of the Slate Belt
Regional Police Department. This new regional police
department will be fully functional early in 2015.
David Mettin, presently Chief of the Pennridge Regional Police
Force has been selected to lead the new department. Initially
Mr. Mettin will be employed as a consultant to the Commission to
guide the formation of the force, eventually becoming its Chief
The public is encouraged to join the Commission in welcoming
Mr. Mettin and his family on Thurdsay, June 5th at the Weona
Park Community Center in Pen Argyl at 7:00 PM. At this time
residents can meet Mr. Mettin and also have an opportunity to
ask questions about the new department and its formation.
Italian Festival
The third annual Italian Festival, benefitting The Rocket Elite
Special Stars - a special needs cheering team, will be held on
Saturday, June 14th, at 1570 Pen Argyl Road, Pen Argyl from
11:00 AM to 8:00 PM. There will be food,fun family activities,

Good News
Faith Christian School's first Roseto
Remembrance Run 5K and 1 mile fun walk
was held on May 25th. It was a special event,
Scott Ewing was supposed to be a part of
the event, but passed away suddenly on May
21st. Those involved with handling the event
made a tribute to Scott Ewing. They made a
card for Scott with Isaiah 40:28-31 printed on
it and pre-race they sang Amazing Grace in
his honor. After some moments of mourning
the "Scott Ewing Timing Team" consisting
of friends and family went into action and
handled the event in a fashion that Scott
would have been extremely proud of. The
team did this to show love for each other,
the community, and most of all love for their
dear friend Scott. The event was a success
because
of the
generosity
of Scott
Ewing and all
involved.

Why Isn't My House Selling?
In the past I’ve been told that I sometimes
use a sledgehammer to kill a butterfly. I
am afraid that today my brutally honest
response to this question will uphold that
statement but here goes.
One reason could be that it is just to
unusual for most buyers. Another reason
could be that it is situated in an unfortunate
location - to close to the highway or landfill,
under a jet flight pattern, in an area that
has become commercial in nature, or some
other situation that cannot be corrected.
Some houses have been modified in such
a way that they do not meet the needs of
most buyers, for example, a home that has
been modified by changing the garage into
an apartment to accommodate another
family member. Then there is the issue with
upkeep. Is your house in reasonable repair?
Is there any chipped paint? Are the windows
operable? I can go in this area but you get
the thought.
You knew this was coming - the most
prevalent reason that a property does not
sell is related to pricing! In book #1 of real
estate you’ll find the statement “Every
property WILL SELL - when it is priced at
an amount that a buyer is willing to pay.”
Overpriced homes will do several things,
none of them good. Most seriously, they
will stay on the market longer and cost
you in the end. The old rule of thumb
is that if you price a home over the true
market value, when it eventually sells
you will end up with much less than if
you would have realized had you started
with a realistic price. In today’s real estate
market there are a significant amount of
REAL ESTATE

homes for sale. As a result of the default
issues loan programs have been tightened
and credit requirements have increased.
Employment concerns due to the economic
climate are a factor. Fuel prices have
diminished the amount of people who
formerly would have chose to live in our
area and commute further to work. I could
go on, but the point is that there simply
are fewer buyers. Sellers, therefore, must
look at the correct listing price for their
homes as they are compared to comparable
homes on the market. The simple rule of
supply & demand. A knowledgeable real
estate professional should inform you as
to the realistic potential sale price for your
home. In many cases the realtor simply
is not accurate or, unfortunately, tells you
what you want to hear in order to get your
listings. This is crucial element. I suggest
that you interview several real estate
professionals and hire the one that you
believe will best be able to represent your
interests throughout the complex marketing
and sale process.
What else can you do?
A few tips for you are as follows:
1. To reiterate the #1 issue - Make sure that
your home is not priced above “For Sale”
homes in the surrounding area. Be brutally
honest with yourself. When similar homes
in similar areas are for sale, it is only logical
that the lower priced home will sell first.
2. Make your property look better that those
you are competing with by sprucing up the
landscape and exterior - first impression
counts.
3. Time should be spent cleaning the
interior and putting things in their place.
Discard or store clutter. Buyers want to
visualize where they will put their things
more than your extensive collection of stuff.
Finally, “Don’t shoot the piano player”
A real estate professional will expose your
property through proven methods. Always
choose Broker or agent with a proven track
record and interpersonal skills to represent
you. You must feel confident that your agent
has the ability to get the job done - then
let him do it! There will be testy times. You
will be tempted to blame the agent for
your home not selling. Remember that the
realtor is motivated to sell your property. He
does not earn a dime unless your property
sells. Keep this article for those testy times.
Honestly review the various items in this
article and asses the position of your home
in the market and make corrections if
necessary. Then feel confident and keep
your chin up.

WTH are gmos?!

After watching a documentary on YouTube called,
Genetic Roulette The Gamble of Our Lives, I
started learning more about GMOs and tried
avoiding them at all costs. GMOs are genetically
modified organisms. A GMO is an organism whose
genetic material has been altered using genetic
engineering techniques. What’s the big deal you
ask? Well I’ll give you two very important reasons. They are in
about 85% of the processed foods we consume yet few studies
have been conducted on their safety and long term effects from
eating them. The few studies that have been done are by the same
company that makes the GMO seeds and only for a period of 3
months! The second reason is that GMO seeds call for a greater use
of chemical pesticides and herbicides because they are engineered
to resist them. GMO crops can be sprayed with higher amounts
of these weed and pest killers (A very popular weed killer brand
comes to mind) and nothing happens to the crop. We are eating
this pesticide infested food! Gross. GMOs were introduced to our
food supply in the late 90’s and of course, without sufficient testing.
By 2012, 88% of corn (maize) and 94% of soy grown in the United
States were genetically modified, according to the US Department
of Agriculture. I could go back and forth on the vast amount of
health problems GMOs could potentially be causing but I’m not a
scientist. I’m just a mom doing tons of research for the well being
of my family. Currently, 64 countries around the world require
labeling of GMOs. The US isn’t one of them. So what did I do? I
started buying organic because anything certified organic CANNOT
be genetically modified. Some products are also certified Non-GMO
and I also buy those. Hopefully the FDA will hear the pleas of many
concerned citizens and start requiring the labeling of GMO produce,
products, and GMO fed animals. In the meantime you can visit
some of these websites so you can educate yourself on GMO foods
and have an “aha moment” like I did.

Strawberry season is upon us and local farms and farmer's markets
will be offering fresh picked or pick your own strawberries. It is also
the season for local strawberry festivals offering fresh strawberry
pie, shortcake and other delicious strawberry treats. Here are a few
tips for picking the best berries and keeping them fresh.
• The deeper red the strawberry the sweeter the berry will be.
• When picking your own strawberries pick the berries with the
caps on (the little green leaves on top of the berry) they will stay
fresh longer.
• To keep strawberries fresh for a longer period line a clean
container with a paper towel, place your cleaned berries in the
container and cover with another paper towel and the container lid.
Store in the refrigerator they should stay fresh for up to a week.

Strawberry Spinach Salad Recipe
Strawberry Season is here and there are other ways
to use those delicious berries than just desserts.
Here's an easy and tasty recipe for a quick lunch or
even dinner.
Spinach Salad
1 bunch fresh spinach cleaned and torn into bite size
pieces
2 cups fresh sliced strawberries
1/2 cup of pecans or walnuts
1/4 cup of croutons (optional)
1/4 cup of shredded Mozzarella cheese
Combine all ingredients in a bowl and toss. Use your
favorite dressing. Add grilled chicken or shrimp for a
light dinner.
Balsamic Vinaigrette Dressing
1/4 cup Balsamic vinegar
1/2 cup olive oil1 clove garlic minced
salt and pepper to taste
Whisk together all ingredients in a bowl and drizzle
over salad.

Kindergarten Registration
The Pen Argyl Area School District has added an
additional date for kindergarten registration for any child
turning five years of age on or before September 1st,
2014. The new registration date will be Monday,
June 9th at the Plainfield Elementary School.

Makes about five dozen
INGREDIENTS
1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 cup wheat germ
1 cup skim milk
1 cup creamy peanut butter
Preheat your oven to
350 degree Fahrenheit
- Combine all ingredients until a
dough forms.
- Roll out to about 1/2-inch
thick. Cut into desired shapes.
- Bake for 8 minutes for a softer
cookie, 12 minutes for a crisper
cookie.
- Allow to cool before serving
to pup.

"Feat for Faith"
Faith Christian School held their annual Faith Walk on
Friday, May 23rd. The theme was "Feat for Faith".Students
from grades K thru 12, faculty, and families paraded through
Roseto. Back in March "piggy banks" were placed in each
classroom, the money raised helps with the operating costs
of the school. Following the walk the worship team RISE
from Baptist Bible College treated the students,
faculty and families to a concert.

Faith Christian School also held their FIRST
5K/1 Mile Fun Walk on Saturday, May 24th.
There was a fantastic turn out with 87 runners
and others walked all of various ages. After the
race RISE worship team held a concert
at the Roseto Ball Park. The weather was
wonderful and Faith couldn't have asked
for a better first year result!

The Bangor Borough Parks & Rec. Advisory Board,
in conjunction with the Borough of Bangor, will be
sponsoring a youth basketball summer league beginning
in early June and ending in early August. Games will be
played each weekend on the basketball court located in
Bangor Memorial Park. There will be two divisions for
both boys and girls - 5th & 6th grade & 7th & 8th grade.

(BPT) - When it comes to tire pressure safety, many
drivers fall flat in connecting this all-important safety
concern with the dashboard icon that could alert them
to a problem, a new national survey shows. With an
estimated 245 million cars and light trucks on U.S.
roadways, driver safety concerns are top-of-mind among
consumers. In fact, 95 percent of drivers consider vehicle
safety features an important issue when shopping for
a car. Unfortunately, when it comes to recognition of
lifesaving vehicle dashboard icons, many drivers are
unaware, uninformed and unprepared.

Four out of 10 drivers are unable to identify the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) warning symbol located
on vehicles' dashboards and don't know what the icon is when they see it, according to a new consumer survey
conducted on behalf of Schrader International. However, nearly 90 percent of drivers think properly inflated tires
and paying attention to an automatic warning system could save their lives.
This demonstrates a drastic disconnect between what drivers consider crucial to their safety and their actual ability
to recognize the tire pressure warning symbol. The need for additional education is clear. Fortunately, there are
already more than 104 million vehicles in the U.S. now equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system, and 91
percent of the entire U.S. vehicle population is expected to be TPMS-equipped by 2023.
So, what does the TPMS alert mean for drivers? The TPMS vehicle dashboard icon is a crucial safety warning
symbol that indicates one or more of a vehicle's tires are significantly underinflated by more than 25 percent.
Underinflated tires can impair a car's ability to maneuver and brake properly. This means a driver whose TPMS
light appears is three times more likely to be involved in a crash related to tire problems than a vehicle with
proper inflation, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). NHTSA also reports
underinflated tires are estimated to cause: 200,000 accidents, 660 highway fatalities and 33,000 injuries annually,
as well as 3.5 million gallons of gasoline wasted daily.
To help raise awareness about TPMS and the importance of proper tire pressure, Schrader, the leading global
manufacturer of sensing and valve solutions and pioneer of TPMS, along with OEM car manufacturers, aftermarket
retailers, and state and federal governments, are dedicating resources toward consumer education. Schrader
has provided the online resource TPMSMadeSimple.com for complete insight into TPMS and the benefits of
maintaining proper tire pressure.
If the TPMS icon appears, your tires are sending you a very important message: one or more of your tires are
significantly underinflated and you or an auto service technician needs to take a closer look as soon as possible.
When this occurs, exercise caution and do the following:
* Find a safe place to pull off the road to check your tire pressure. Keep a tire gauge with your set of emergency
items in your vehicle.
* If the light comes on while driving at highway speed, immediately grab hold of the steering wheel with both hands
in case you are experiencing a blow-out (rapid deflation) scenario. Slowly decelerate to a safe speed and find a
safe place to pull off the road to check your tire pressure.
* Once checked, if the tires all appear normal, proceed carefully to the nearest gas station or tire service center to
add air to your tire(s).
* If needed, have the problem tire or tires and the TPMS system serviced at your nearest tire service center.
The TPMS icon should turn off within several minutes after inflating the tires to their recommended pressure.

How to personalize your backyard with a beautiful concrete path
(BPT) - Paths provide the practical purpose
of connecting two or more locations but a wellmade
walkway that will stand up for years can
enrich the natural landscape of a backyard and
complement the exterior look of a home.
While traditionally popular materials for creating paths, like brick
and stone, are attractive and durable, they can be expensive and
challenging to install. An easy and affordable alternative is to build
a path yourself using a plastic form and pre-mixed packaged
concrete. Taking this approach not only minimizes cost, time and
headache, the preference and personal taste of each individual
homeowner dictates the color, style and movement in the finished
concrete path.
It starts with selecting the style of path, which can range from a
natural looking country stone pattern to a more standard running
bond brick pattern. The QUIKRETE Walkmaker forms are 2 foot by
2 foot and conveniently hold one 80-pound bag of concrete, so
homeowners can work on the path at their own pace by following
these simple directions.
Remember when working with cementitious products, always wear
eye protection and gloves.

Steps for laying a path
* Remove the sod and soil to the desired width, shape and length of
path, be sure to keep it as flat and level as possible.
* Slowly mix the concrete and water in a wheelbarrow with a garden
hoe, shovel or in a concrete mixer according to the directions on the
bag.
* Lay the form at the beginning of the path and fill with concrete
mix, being sure to smooth the surface with a trowel.
* Promptly remove the form and smooth the edges of the path with
a trowel before the concrete mix hardens. For a nonslip finish, brush
the surface with a stiff broom.
* Continue by placing the form against the completed section of the
path. Then fill with the concrete mix, remove the form and smooth
the surface. Repeat the process until the path is complete.
* To create a curved walkway, after removing the form from the
freshly poured section of path, reposition the form in the direction
of the curve and press down to slice off the corner. Use a trowel to
consolidate and smooth cut off edges.
The path can be further customized by incorporating liquid colors,
stains, and/or embedding gravel or other small aggregates into the
concrete.
