Everyday
Experience the Joy of Easter Every Day
By Kathleen McFall
Like so many of us, I remember the excitement of waking up on Easter
Sunday with my brother and sister in search of our Easter baskets. We
knew they would be filled with candy - from jelly beans and marshmallow
chicks to chocolate bunnies and peanut butter eggs.
The Easter holiday was fun. We dyed eggs, had egg hunts and enjoyed
great food (especially the Easter bread, shaped like a basket, waiting for
each of us at our grandparents’ home).
Yet, we know Easter is more than sweet treats.
Easter is the core of Christianity. It celebrates the resurrection of Jesus
three days after he died on the cross. Easter is about forgiveness, grace
and amazing love.
We understand there are various types of love - the love of family, close
friendships, the love in the eyes of a child. Easter, however, is about a love
that is infinitely so much more. It is about a love that the world would never
forget.
John 3:16 tells us, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and
only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal
life.”
The joy of Easter is hope. Each of us has a dream for our life - a loving
family, a better job, a desire to start a business, or it can be something that,
right now, seems unattainable.
Sometimes our everyday life can feel so heavy that celebration is not a
part of it.
For Pope Francis, Easter’s joy and hope means “leaving ourselves behind
and encountering others, being close to those crushed by life’s troubles….”
Life can feel burdensome and lonely at times. Critical family illness,
loss of a job, disappointment in a relationship can make it difficult to feel
particularly joyful.
As we all are too sadly aware, another tragedy unfolded in our country last
month at a high school in Parkland, Florida.
We are parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and, simply, citizens of the
world who have witnessed, time and time again, the pain, the grief, the
agony and terror of gun violence that can take place anywhere - in a home,
on the streets in our neighborhood, mass shootings in our schools, our
concerts, and, yes, even in our places of worship.
The world can seem very frightening.
In the midst of life’s unfortunate and sometimes tragic events, how can we
cope?
I believe we need to look to God to strengthen us. We need to share the
chaos of life with God so that we can finally stop trying to make things
happen on our own and trust that God is at work, even in our quiet and dark
times.
He is our most powerful ally who is with us when the challenges and
troubles of this world bear down on us. We can overcome our fears, for
the real power of letting Jesus into our hearts is how free our hearts will
become.
There can be joy after sorrow, peace after pain, forgiveness after an
argument and hope for the days ahead. We can choose to surrender our
fears, worries and doubts to God. He is our comfort and strength.
Easter Sunday is Christianity’s most joyous and hopeful day, but it
shouldn’t be a once-a-year
celebration.
Rather, it is meant to be a daily
reminder that, through our faith
in Jesus, we each have access
to His goodness and mercy in
every ordinary and extraordinary
moment of our lives. It is the
basis of our hope. That is where
the real joy of Easter waits for us.
Happy Easter!

Bangor Area School District Wellness Committee
The Bangor Area School District Wellness Committee wants to extend an
invitation to the families in our school community to participate in the following
healthy activities throughout the school year. These are programs that the
faculty eagerly awaits and competes in each year.
10,000 Steps: April 2nd, 2018- May 2nd, 2018 This is not a team walk
rather it is an individual walking program where you find the average of your
daily steps and set a personal goal to increase the steps each day. Strive to
achieve 10,000 steps a day! To find the average; record your steps for any 3
days and divide the total by 3 and that will give you an average of steps walked
per day). I’m sure you can find a way to compete among family members, friend
groups, or with neighbors. Be creative in the rewards or prizes!
Easter Skies
by Robert. Martin
When winter with its grayish silver hue,
Of nebulous skies that growled and ruled,
Waved its scepter and chased the rain
As it filled the upper limits and laid a claim.
But Easter with its clean and sacred hands,
Of prophetic skies and spiritual wonderlands,
Fresh from its tribute to the glorious ascension,
Said to move ahead with a peaceful intention.
As we devoutly follow in its sacred footsteps
Along its winding paths and flowing rivulets,
We come to an inner peace as our spirits rise,
Our selves renewed from the greater Easter skies.
Brunch Made Easy
(Family Features) Gathering friends and family doesn’t need to be
fancy. With its prime positioning between breakfast and lunch, brunch
is a more casual and lighter alternative to the typical dinner party.
When charged with hosting a mid-day gathering, a little pre-planning
can go a long way toward ensuring your brunch get-together is as
simple as it is scrumptious.
Get creative with decor. When prepping your tablescape, think
outside the box. Opt for unexpected serving dishes such as tartlet
tins and vases, and transfer syrups and jams from their everyday
containers to glass bowls or creamers. Fresh flowers and produce can
add natural pops of color to the table and a bowl of fruit can make for
an eye-catching centerpiece.
Plan a variety of dishes. Make sure you have a mix of both sweet
and savory dishes on the menu that can please a wide variety of
palates. Earmarking some recipes that can be made ahead, like
pastries and casseroles, can be a simple way to avoid waking up extra
early to prepare. Save the morning of your event for dishes that are
best served fresh, like this Herbed Spanish Omelet, which features
potatoes; fresh, spring herbs; and red onions, and packs protein,
B-vitamins and cancer-protective phytochemicals.
Serve it buffet-style. Setting your spread out on the counter and
allowing guests to help themselves not only makes it easier for the
host to mingle, but it allows guests to customize their meals as they
wish and gives the gathering a more casual vibe. Try themed stations,
such as a coffee or mimosa bar, parfait bar or bread bar, in addition to
more traditional dishes to let guests take the customization to the next
level.
Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program
Applications Now Available
State Senator Lisa M. Boscola today announced that applications for
the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program are now available online and at
her local offices. This year’s filing deadline is June 30.
“This is an excellent program for our seniors and I encourage
everyone to see if they are eligible for this program,” Boscola said. “The
rebate check goes a long way in providing assistance to those who
need it most.”
Applicants must apply yearly. The rebate amount is based on annual
income and paid property taxes for each calendar year. Individuals
eligible for the program include Pennsylvanians age 65 and older;
widows and widowers age 50 and older; and people with permanent
disabilities over the age of 18.
In 2008 Boscola voted for the law that more than doubled the income
limit for the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program from $15,000 to
$35,000. The measure also raised the maximum rebate for homeowners
and renters from $500 to $650. Applicants can exclude half of their
income earned from Social Security, Supplemental Security income, and
Railroad Retirement Tier 1 benefits when applying for a rebate.
Boscola has also introduced legislation that would freeze property
tax rates for seniors, and co-sponsored a bill that would totally shift the
school funding burden away from property taxes.
Property Tax/Rent Rebate forms are available on Boscola’s web site at
www.senatorboscola.com or at one of her local district offices at: One
East Broad Street, Suite 120 in Bethlehem (610) 868-8667, or 1701
Washington Blvd. in Easton (610) 250-5627, or the West Catasauqua
Prof. Office Bldg., 2123 N. 1st Ave., Suite A-4 in Whitehall (610)
266-2117. Assistance with filling out the Property Tax/Rent Rebate
applications is available through one of Senator Boscola’s offices. There
are also events held at local senior centers and libraries to assist those
wishing to complete a rebate form. Please contact our offices for more
HAPPY EASTER
Leck Veterinary 610-863-3111
ADOPT US: AMBER & MADRE
AMBER JOY is a joy to behold! This
gorgeous girl was surrendered when
her beloved mommy fell on hard times.
But rather than curl up and feel sorry
for herself, Amber Joy has spent her
time at the shelter meeting new people
and cats, and she is enjoying every
minute of it. Amber Joy’s outgoing
nature makes her the perfect addition
to any home with kids, cats or a
combination of both. Just one look into
those glowing green eyes and you’ll be
smitten. Amber Joy is just 3 years old, spayed, fully vaccinated,
microchipped and ready to fill your home with her very own brand
of joy. Come meet her today!
MADRE is a shrinking violet with a sad story to tell. Found as
a stray, shelter staff was hopeful when we discovered she had
a registered microchip. But that hope slowly faded away when
her owner never responded to repeated calls and messages. No
matter, we promised sweet Madre we would find her a truly loving
family who will keep her forever. Could that be you? Sweet but
shy, Madre seems to like other cats, but on her own terms. Madre
needs a family willing to give her the time and patience she needs
to come out of her shell and
be the loving companion we
know she can be. Madre is 4
years old, spayed, up to date
on vaccinations, microchipped
and ready for a second chance
home. Visit her at the shelter
today!
The AWSOM Animal Shelter is located at 3129 Godfrey Ridge
Drive, Stroudsburg, PA 18360. Adoptions hours are 11AM to 4PM,
7 days a week. Volunteer opportunities are always available. Stop
in or call 570-421-DOGS for more information.
The AWSOM Animal Wellness Center is open Monday thru
Friday for all your basic veterinary needs. Check out our low-cost
veterinary services, including spay and neutering, vaccinations,
dental care and more. Call 570-424-1060 for more information or
to make an appointment.
