Welcome
MANY of us covet our old tackle, but modern
innovations can lead us to even greater enjoyment
of our sport. Improvements are subtle. We now
expect fly-lines with neat welded loops for smoother
connections as well as identification marks that reveal at a glance
casting weight, taper and density. Rods continue to develop
around "secret" combinations of high-tech resin and carbon-fibres,
becoming ever stronger and, as a consequence, lighter, while
reflecting trends in technique, such as long-leader nymphing and
the use of short (switch) double-handers for salmon and sea-trout.
Leak-proof waders have yet to be invented but sonic welding and
moving seams from high-wear areas appear to be leaps forward.
Affordable reels have never been better made. Many of us would
struggle to tell a cast reel from one that has been machined.
There remains much desirable country clothing, but the use of
advanced materials, borrowed from mountain and marine sports,
has introduced puffa-style tops, waterproof zips and tougher
luggage. Scandinavia exerts an influence over the look of our gear,
from bent-handle rods to brightly coloured boots and jackets.
The following pages introduce even more of this tempting
new tackle. Why not treat yourself ?
