Flapjack Fundraiser 

Weona Park Pool Pals will hold a Flapjack fund raiser Saturday,

dollars buys flapjacks, sausage, coffee/ tea and juice with A percent 

of the proceeds benefits the Pool Pals, a group dedicated to having

Bangor's 140th Anniversary 

Saturday, July 18th, beginning at 11:00 AM, at House of Sabatini, 

34 Market Street. Owner Bernadette Sabatini will showcase her 

custom upholstery and framing skills. The tour will continue across 

Market Street to the Bangor Jacksonian Club and then around the 

corner on North Main to the old train station. Local historian Donald 

Jones will speak about the buildings' history. For more information,

Retirement of the Colors Ceremony to be held on Tuesday, July 28th 

at 1:00 PM at the post home in Johnsonville, PA. This is a dignified 

tribute to the US flag and it's symbolism. The worn, faded and torn 

flags must be honorably retired from service by burning to encourage 

proper respect for their disposal. Bring your disposal flags with you.

Tasty Tuesdays is back at Trinity Lutheran Church 

Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, located at Broadway and 4th 

Streets in Bangor, will once again offer the free bag lunch program 

to children and families in the Bangor community this summer. Tasty 

Tuesdays will begin on Tuesday, June 16 and will continue thru 

August 11th. Every Tuesday the bag lunch will be available and will 

contain a sandwich, fresh fruit, chips, a healthy snack bar and a drink. 

The lunches will be available for pick up at the church between 11:00 

AM-1:00 PM. If you would like to register but are unable to come at 

that time, please let the church office know and accommodations can 

be made. Please call the church office to register for the Tasty Tuesdays 

program at 610-588-2023. It is never too late to register! 

Pen Argyl Salvation Army Events

122nd "Big Time" With Celebration Queen Francesca Catino 

Francesca Catino, daughter of Daniel and Michelle 

Goffredo Catino, is the Celebration Queen of the 

122nd Mt. Carmel annual "Big Time" celebration. 

Francesca is a 2015 graduate of Pius X High 

School and will attend Moravian College. The 

2014 Celebration Queen, Gianna Rose Goffredo, 

cousin to Queen Francesca, will do the crowning. 

The crowning ceremonies will take place at the 

Mt. Carmel Church Plaza on Saturday, July 25th 

at 6:30 PM followed by a parade down Garibaldi Avenue led by the 

Italian-American Band. Mr. Joseph E. Diorio, Pius X alumni and lifelong 

parishioner of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church is Master of Ceremonies. 

On Sunday, July 26th at 2:00 PM at the church plaza, Queen 

Francesca will crown the statue of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel followed by 

the procession down Garibaldi Avenue and back to church. 

The girls in Queen Francesca's court are: Christina Bubba, daughter 

of Gennarino & Laura Bubba; Caitlyn Carmella, daughter of Thomas & 

Denise Carmella; Laura Christman, daughter of John & Cynthia Christman;

BAHS Alumni Association Presents 

2014 Sixth Grade All-Around Awards 

In an effort to recognize talented and high-achieving elementary students, 

in 2013 the BAHS Alumni Association added two new awards to be given 

annually. The awards are presented at the end of the school year at the 

Sixth Grade Moving Up Ceremony, which took place on June 12, 2015. 

The Sixth Grade All-Around Awards are chosen by the DeFranco faculty 

and given to one boy and one girl at DeFranco Elementary School 

who have averaged 90 or better in all of their core subjects. These 

students are singled out because of their academics, school citizenship, 

participation in school and community activities, and 

leadership in all they do. 

This year's awards were presented to Angel Torres, 

son of Pedro and Sara Torres, and Lauren Harrison, 

daughter of Chip and Michelle Harrison.

"Pies in the Park" Fundraiser 

On Sunday, July 26th, members of the Blue Mountain Community 

Library Board of Directors will be holding a “Pies in the Park” Fundraiser 

at the “Inch and the Echoes” concert in Weona Park, Route 512, Pen 

Argyl. The concert is part of the Summer Sounds Free Concert Series 

held at Weona Park on alternate Sundays at 6:00 PM. Homemade 

Pie, Ice Cream and Coffee will be available to purchase to benefit the 

library. Food and drinks, sponsored by the Lookout Fire Co., will also be 

available. Please come out and enjoy a wonderful night in the park and

Monroe County Historical Association Receives Grant 

The Monroe County Historical Association is pleased to announce that the 

organization has received a $4,000 Cultural and Historical grant from the 

Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The one-year grant program distributed 

funds designated by the state Legislature to support the preservation 

of Pennsylvania’s history. The Cultural and Historical Support Grant 

Program, run by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, 

awarded nearly $2 million in grants to qualified museums and official 

county historical societies. Founded in 1921, the Monroe County 

Historical Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting, 

protecting, and preserving the rich history of Monroe County, PA. The 

headquarters of the organization is the historic 1795 Stroud Mansion 

which houses a local history museum and genealogical research library.

Thank You-Bangor Elks Memorial Golf Tournament 

The Bangor Elks Lodge #1106 held its 15th annual Memorial Golf 

Tournament on June 29th at Whitetail Golf Course. First Flight winners 

were Mike Hopstetter, John Dewitsky, Al Schafer, and Gerald Zeeman. 

Second Flight winners were Mark Kukla, Mike Kukla, Todd Oessenick, 

and Chuck Schubert. Third Flight winners were Vic Zeeman, Neil Bilger, 

Mike Steigerwalt, and Chauncey Mullikin.The Lodge would like to extend 

a sincere thank you to our 66 hole sponsors, 34-foursomes,, and the 

many individuals and businesses who donated prizes. A special thank 

you to Dotta Auto Sales for their hole-in-one sponsorship of a 2015 

Jeep Renegade. Also, a thank you to the ten member golf committee for

St. Rocco's Church Festival 

Each year hundreds of area residents make their way to the small 

village of Martins Creek to celebrate their patron’s feast – St. Rocco. 

The festival brings out the essence of ethnic diversity. Part of America’s 

beauty is its diversity. During the Festival we will feature music, 

dancing, traditional foods and a view of Italian heritage. St.Rocco was 

a 14th century saint born in Northern Italy, known for his miraculous 

powers to heal the victims of the plague in Italy and France. Stands will 

be open 6:00 PM to 10:30 PM Thursday, August 13th, Friday, August 

14th and Saturday, August 15th. Entertainment will be provided each 

night from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM by Lo and Behold on Thursday, August 

13th, The Headliners on Friday, August 14th and Inch and the Echoes on 

Saturday, August 15th. Food featured includes the famous Crispelli, the 

Porketta Sandwich, and also sausage & peppers, hamburgers, hot dogs 

and pierogies, and chicken fingers and on Friday night Clams. Come for 

fun and fellowship. Free parking and Amusements by Metz featuring 

Ride Bands for each night. The Mass schedule for that weekend is: 

Saturday, August 15 at 4:30 PM. Sunday Masses are: 7:30 AM, 9:00 

AM and at the 11:00 AM Mass will be held outdoors during which 

there will be an anointing service. Mass will be followed by St. Rocco's 

Procession back to the church. We are located 6 miles north of Easton, 

off of Route 611 in Martins Creek. 

Slate Belt Heritage Center to Preview it's latest book 

After two years of research, the Slate Belt 

Heritage Center will be publishing its latest 

book, African-Americans of the Pennsylvania 

Slate Belt. Author Jenny Dubin Rhodin will 

present her findings on Thursday, August 

13th at 7:00 PM. Ms. Rhodin will document 

what drew African-American's to make their homes in the Slate Belt and 

showcase the lives of the Smith-Boddie, Depp, Bloodworth, Purdue, Flood 

and other families. Publication is slated for this fall. Ms. Rhodin is 24 

years old and a 2009 graduate of Easton High School She is also a 2013

A Family Luau was held on Friday July 10th at Bangor Memorial 

Park Pool hosted by the Bangor Park Board. The weather was 

perfect with over 200 people attending. There were contests 

including a coconut roll, a hula hoop contest, carpet squares, 

sponge bucket relay, prizes, and refreshments were available for 

purchase. A DJ and train rides added to the fun. Proceeds from 

events sponsored by the Bangor Park Board are used to provide 

Free Movie Nights, as well as other events and improvements at 

the park. Anyone interested in volunteering for the Park Board 

or helping with any of the events can contact Debbie Smith at

Liberty Fire Co. Annual Carnival 

The Liberty Fire Company carnival was held on July 9th, 10th, 11th. This annual carnival is one 

that everyone looks forward to. It's a Slate Belt tradition, people come for delicious food and to 

gather with friends and family. Delicious sausage sandwiches, burgers, shrimp and of course 

clams! Ice cream, funnel cakes a bouncy house for the kids and fire trucks and live bands.

Business Spotlight: Roseto Bakery

There’s a little bakery 

that has been part of the 

small town of Roseto, 

Pennsylvania since 1930. 

Currently owned by 

Maria and Antoine Saba 

who bought the bakery 

in 2012. Prior to that 

they owned a restaurant 

for 20 years. Maria’s 

father grew up in this 

neighborhood (4 houses 

down from the bakery) and she has relatives and many ties to the community. When they heard 

the bakery was for sale they decided to by it and as the saying goes the rest is history. 

Upon purchasing the bakery the first change that was made was relocating the retail 

store upstairs ( in the 1980’s it housed a blouse mill) having the store upstairs allows 

them to offer a larger variety of items as well as as a side entrance with a parking 

lot located across the street. Maria says “what we have in Roseto is unique. We bake 

fresh bread, tomato pie and stuffed breads, from scratch, every morning. Nothing is

ever frozen or day old. When you buy bread at our bakery you know it was made that 

morning. This is why we are a made to order bakery, which means we bake according to our orders. We do make extra items daily, however, 

to get what you want you need to order at least a day in advance (at least 2 weeks in advance for Christmas). When we are closed our 

answering machine is always on to accept orders. We also offer French and Vienna bread, sliced Italian bread (round or square), and steak 

and hamburger rolls in different sizes. Tomato pie is made in a few other places in the Lehigh Valley and surrounding areas, however they 

all taste different. Tomato pie is available as a whole or half pie. We feature a vareity 

of our own stuffed breads: potato, egg and onion, sausage and pepper, pepperoni 

and cheese, meatball, sauce and cheese, anchovy and onion, spinach and mozzarella 

cheese, spinach and feta cheese and broccoli and cheese and our newest item 

chocolate bread which is a great as a dessert bread. Also available crackling bread, 

oil pretzels and four varieties of biscotti: chocolate chip, cranberry, almond and their 

specialty almond stuffed with orange marmalade.” 

You will also find a variety of cupcakes available on the weekends and the flavors 

change weekly. Flavors include: chocolate with peanut butter, cannoli cupcake, oreo 

cupcake, chocolate with cream cheese icing, yellow stuffed with homemade lemon 

curd, yellow stuffed with blueberry, peanut butter and jelly, and chocolate with buttercream icing just to name a few of the scrumptious 

cupcakes to tempt your taste buds. A variety of danishes are also available on the weekend as well as sticky buns which are only available 

on Sundays. All are made from scratch with only the freshest ingredients. 

Specialty items available for the holidays include: pumpkin whoopie pies in October, Christmas cookie trays in December, and Gavazoons for Lent 

and Easter Bread during the Easter season. Some of the other items that you will find at the bakery on a daily basis are chocolate covered graham 

crackers, chocolate covered pretzels, chocolate covered oreos and the newest addition cookies and brownies in a jar, just add the wet ingredients. 

If you have never been to the Roseto Bakery it’s definitely worth the trip. Visit their website 

which details the history, menu, and information on heating and 

storing items at the bakery. T shirts, reusable shopping bags and 

baseball hats are all sold at the bakery.

Everyone knows of the fine athletic teams 

and players Roseto produced. It would be a 

great oversight if we omitted from the history 

of Roseto the mention of the once renowned 

Roseto Coronet Band. The band was 

Joe DeFranco organized in 1895 in the home of Giusseppe 

Policelli. One of the original members was 

related to my Grandmom Teodora, his name was Domenico Del Grosso. 

Grandmom would tell me how most of the Delgrosso’s in Roseto 

Valfortore, Italy were blacksmiths and musicans, they learned to keep 

the beat with sound of the hammering steel; “pinga pinga ping.” 

Professor Philip (Turlone) Carrescia was the first conductor. The band 

won acclaim not only in the Slate Belt but also in large cities as well. 

Maestros Michelangelo Donatelli, Nichola D Italia and Arturo Ungaro 

conducted the band for many years. The Jubilee Band was directed by 

Al Nittle and later Louis Angelini was the director. I remember as a child 

sitting on the curb during the "Big Time" and waiting for the band to 

go by. The band was another way the Rosetans showcased their town 

heritage, it was part of our Italian culture. Like everything the people 

of Roseto did was done with integrity. Some members I recall were 

Joe Ledonne-Tuba , Al Ronca- Frenchhorn, Ziggy, Anthony Ruggiero, 

Fred Vario- Trumpet, Lefty DeFrank, Dave Mollo and Teddy De Milio- 

Percussion. It was hard for any one in Roseto to not have someone who 

was in the band, my brother Phil played in it also. Now it there is a band 

that plays at the fest, but it is not the same as your own towns band 

with their familiar faces and the sound was incredible; we never realized 

how good they were until it was too late.

Every Hero Has A Story 2015 Summer Reading Program 

The Bangor Public Library presents “Every Hero Has a Story” as this year’s 

summer reading program. Starting on Monday, July 6th and meeting at 

the Bangor Park pavilion, activities will include games, crafts and more.

Are Chlorinated 

Pools Safe?

I loved the smell of chlorine because it reminded me of 

warm weather and fun childhood memories. Now all I think about when I 

smell it is toxins. Chlorine sanitizes, oxidizes (controls organic debris from 

perspiration and body oils), and keeps algae away. Chlorine absorbs into 

your skin. Too much exposure to chlorine has been linked to major health 

problems including reproductive disorders and even birth defects. It can 

cause your skin and hair to dry out and over time too much exposure can 

cause wrinkles. It has a strong odor, reddens eyes, causes allergic reactions 

to some, and is a carcinogen. Indoor swimming pools cause a greater health 

risk because the toxic gases it releases and we breathe in can cause severe 

damage to the lining of the lungs which could lead to respiratory problems 

or asthma. Always swim outdoors when possible. Chlorine also causes 

hormone disruption, respiratory disorders and imbalances gut flora. Wait! 

Don’t close up your pool yet! There are many things you can do to avoid the 

side effects of swimming in a chlorinated pool. If you own your own pool 

there are many chlorine alternatives on the market but research them as 

well as they can just contain other toxic replacments. There are also special 

filtrations systems as well. For those of us that unfortunately don’t own 

our own pool and can’t avoid chlorine there are ways you lessen exposure. 

Chlorine affects us all differently. Some none at all. My son goes nuts after 

swimming in a pool that is heavily chlorinated. His body can’t detox well 

so it affects his behavior and even makes him sick if he ingests pool water. 

Here are some ways to minimize chlorine exposure and side effects: 

• Shower before entering the pool to wash off any body products as the 

mixture of these products and chlorine can make a pool an even more toxic 

soup to swim in. It also may actually help to protect against absorbing nasty 

pool chemicals. Some experts claim that our skin and hair are like a sponge, 

so saturating with clean water will prevent your body from absorbing the 

chlorine. If you are going to use sunscreen use a non-toxic one. 

• Apply a layer of coconut oil. This will create a barrier on the skin to help 

minimize chlorine absorption. As an added bonus coconut oil acts as a safe 

and natural sunscreen offering mild protection. 

• Make a vitamin C spray. Mix One teaspoon of vitamin C powder in 2 cups 

of filtered water and spray hair and skin after leaving the pool. Rinse off with 

clean water. The chemical structure of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) neutralizes 

chlorine and chloramine. 

• Take an epsom salt bath soon after swimming. Epsom salt baths detox 

the body and can help eliminate toxins. It can be difficult to get to the 

Epsom salt bath right away, so you can make your own Epsom salt oil by 

dissolving 1 tsp. Epsom salts with 1 tsp. warm water and add coconut oil. 

Another fast and easy alternative is dissolving equal parts of Epsom salts 

and warm water, then put into a spray bottle. You can spray a person’s chest 

or back after swimming and let dry.

Makes 25 servings 

• 2 Eggs 

• 1 teaspoon Salt 

• 1 cup Milk 

• 10 tbsp. Bacon Fat, melted 

• 1/2 cup Water 

• 5 cups Whole Wheat Flour 

Prep: 20 minutes Cook: 40 minutes Ready In: 1 hour 

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F 

(175 degrees C). Lightly grease a 

cookie sheet. 

2. Beat eggs in a large bowl. Stir in 

milk, water, salt, and bacon fat until 

well blended. Gradually stir in flour to 

make a stiff dough. Pinch off pieces 

of the dough and roll into 2 inch balls. 

Place on prepared baking sheet. 

3. Bake in preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes. Cool on racks. 

Store in a covered container in the refrigerator.

Safe Haven Dog Adoption Day At Tractor Supply 

Safe Haven Pet Rescue will hold an adoption day from 11:00 AM to 3:00 

PM on Sunday, July 19th, at Tractor Supply, Rt. 940, Mt Pocono. Safe 

Haven will have many young dogs available for you to meet and get to 

know. Safe Haven requires a pre-adoption application with references 

and a home visit prior to adoption. Safe Haven Rescue needs volunteers 

to help with adoption days, fundraising, transporting dogs to vets and 

groomers and fostering homeless dogs until they find their forever

experience to be able to watch the Women's 

World Cup along with a crowd of cheering 

fans chanting USA! USA! and wearing red, 

white and blue to show their support for the 

Women's USA National team at the SoccerFest 

and Viewing Party held at SteelStacks in 

Bethlehem, PA on July 2nd. They played with 

such determination, speed, and power to beat 

Germany 2-0 and advance to the Finals.

Harvat To Represent The Northeast in All American 

Softball Tournament Submitted by Renate Harvat 

Sarah Harvat, of Bangor has been chosen to 

represent The Northeast in the All American 

Softball Tournament. The All American Games 

will begin on Monday July 13th-Thursday July 

16th in Kissimmee, Florida at Disney’s Wide 

World of Sports. Sarah was selected after 

trying out at Veterans Park in Quakertown 

on May 8th. The tryout was one of 22 held 

throughout the country.The country was 

divided into eight regions, Atlantic, Central, 

Far West, Great Lakes, Midwest, Northeast, 

Northwest, and Southeast. The top 15 players 

in each age group (10U, 11U, 12U, 13U, and 14U) were selected to 

represent their respective region in the All American Games. 

Players selected were scored on both their 

primary and secondary position along with 

other drills that tested speed, agility and overall 

athleticism. Players were also evaluated by 

the National Scouting Report, (NSR,) a highly 

revered high school and college recruiting 

organization that has conducted evaluations 

and showcased events for over 30 years. Team 

members were chosen by NSR, Players from the 

National Pro Fastpitch team The Florida Pride, 

and a USA Elite Select committee. All American 

teams were announced via an online selection 

show broadcasted on www.usssalive.com.

Sarah, a catcher for the 12U NW Explosion based in Bethlehem has 

helped the team achieve an overall record of 14 wins and 5 losses so 

far this season including three first place tournament championships on 

October 4th-5th, May 16th-17th and June 13th-14th, 2015.

Rescheduled Movie Night Set For This Friday 

Free movie night planned for inaugural event 

Easton, PA – The Friends of the Karl Stirner Arts Trail will be hosting their 

first public event along the trail. “Movies Along The Trail” will be held on 

Friday, July 17th. This event was previously scheduled for Saturday, 

June 27th, but was postponed due to weather. 

The event is free and will open to the public at 8:00 PM; the movie 

will begin at dusk. The movie screen will be located near the dog park 

along the trail, approximately 0.75 miles from either of the two main 

entrances. Entrances are located along North 13th Street, adjacent to 

the Simon Silk Mill, and also along Bushkill Drive, at the “blue bridge.” 

The Friends of the Karl Stirner Arts Trail, in conjunction with the City 

of Easton, will be showing “St. Vincent,” starring Bill Murray and rated 

PG-13. Seating will be available along the grassy hill adjacent to the 

trail. In addition to the movie showing, the Easton FOP Lodge #17 will 

be providing popcorn. Movie goers are encouraged to bring their own 

chairs or blankets, bug spray and flashlights. 

Movie goers from the surrounding neighborhoods are encouraged 

to walk, however parking for the event is available at the following 

locations: 13th Street Trail Lot, the Bushkill Drive Trail Lot adjacent to 

500 Bushkill Drive, the Hummel Lumber Lot along Bushkill Drive, and 

the PA Water Rescue Lot directly across the street from the Trail Lot 

along 13th Street.
