Thank You
Portland Lodge No. 311 would like to thank everyone that had a part in
making our 2015 Toys for Tots Toy Drive Event on November 28 at the Blue
Valley Farm Show Complex such a great success! This year, we were able
to end the day's festivities by filling the back of a military vehicle with 17
overflowing boxes of new, unwrapped toys and bikes for children in need in
Northampton County. This annual event would not be possible without the help
of our small but mighty Slate Belt community.
This year, the afternoon kicked off with the arrival of Santa and his elf
by helicopter, courtesy of Mr. Carl Tolino. Soon after, the United States Marines
and their mascot Chesty were escorted to the grounds by the Plainfield and
Washington Township Volunteer Fire companies, the Slate Belt Regional Police
Department and Margaret the Pink Fire Truck with the Guardians of the
Pink Ribbon. Children in the crowd were all given flags donated by County
Councilman Matthew Dietz, before the Bangor School District Choir officially
opened the event with the National Anthem and a medley of Christmas carols.
Many local businesses and groups donated their time, products, and services to
make the day fun and festive. Bangor Daycare, The Slate Belt YMCA, Pen Argyl
High School Art Students, Ignite Fitness, Miss Rose's Preschool, Girl Scout Troop
#8420 and Washington Township Fire Company sponsored activity tables for
the children. Dave Sisson of Dice Productions provided Christmas music and
entertainment, and Kevin Ramaley & the Rockin' Photobooth made photos with
Santa possible. After each photo, each child was given a pack of cookies thanks
to a kind donation from Mondelez Global LLC. The Green Knight Wrestling Club
sponsored a contest for decorating ornaments, which were donated to a local
family along with a Christmas tree. Anna, Elsa, and Olaf from the movie Frozen
appeared, courtesy of Bangor Daycare and Leiser's Rentals, and the Star Wars
Characters of the Mandolorian Merc Costume Club. The DeVaLug Lego group
and Gospel Lionel Club each constructed a display, and The Allentown & Auburn
Railroad sponsored 4 passes for their holiday train. We deeply appreciate the
help of all of the vendors and groups that made the day so special.
This year, in order to help as many children possible, we extended a
challenge to participating local businesses. Each business was given donation
boxes, and the one that collected the most toys by the day of our event would
win free advertising. We would like to congratulate Bangor Daycare on winning
this contest, and thank Mike of the Blue Valley Times for sponsoring the Toys
for Tots Business Challenge.
Most importantly, we would like to say THANK YOU to the men and women
of the U.S. Marines, who are the inspiration for this event. Their dedication to
both protecting our country abroad, and keeping Christmas at home special for
children in need, prove that they are truly heroes of Christmas. Portland Lodge
No. 311 thanks them, along with all of the other volunteers and sponsors, and looks
forward to doing it once again next year.
