hiking on the first day of 2016! Join center educator Rick<br />

Wiltraut for two interpretive hikes at Jacobsburg.<br />

We will explore the old growth forest of Henrys Woods. <strong>The</strong><br />

hikes will leave at 10:00 AM <strong>and</strong> 1:00 PM from the Visitor<br />

Center at 400 Belfast Road. Each hike will be two miles long<br />

over moderate terrain. <strong>The</strong> trail is not suitable for strollers.<br />

Bring comfortable hiking shoes, a water bottle, <strong>and</strong> wear<br />

layers. Registration is required; please specify whether you<br />

would like to join us for the morning or afternoon hike.<br />

THE NEW YEAR'S DAY TRADITION<br />

OF PORK AND SAUERKRAUT<br />

This tradition of eating pork <strong>and</strong> sauerkraut on New Year's day is<br />

both German <strong>and</strong> Pennsylvania Dutch. <strong>The</strong> story goes like this: A<br />

Pennsylvania Dutch tradition says that it's good luck to eat pork for the<br />

new year because pigs forage forward for their food & don't look back.<br />

Historical Presentation<br />

<strong>The</strong> Slate <strong>Belt</strong> Heritage Center will hold their monthly historic presentation on<br />

Emrick Reaches Out to Local Veterans<br />

NAZARETH – State Rep. Joe Emrick (R-Nazareth) is offering the men <strong>and</strong><br />

women of the 137th Legislative District who serve <strong>and</strong> have served our country an<br />

opportunity to get assistance with individual issues through his district office.<br />

“Approximately 20,000 veterans live in Northampton County,” Emrick said. “What<br />

we’re providing each month is a chance to get answers to questions they may<br />

have, as well as check out programs for which they may be eligible.”<br />

Gina Svoboda from the Pennsylvania American Legion is available the first<br />

Monday of every month, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in Emrick’s Nazareth district<br />

office, located at 134 South Main Street. Appointments may be set up by calling<br />

(570) 897-0401 or (610) 746-5090.<br />

Emrick would also like to remind Forks Township residents of the chance they<br />

have to discuss state government issues.<br />

“A member of my staff will be at the Forks Township Community Center, 500<br />

noon <strong>and</strong> 1-5 p.m.,” added Emrick. “Feel free to stop by <strong>and</strong> have your legislative<br />

Portl<strong>and</strong> Lodge No. 311 would like to thank everyone that had a part in<br />

making our <strong>2015</strong> Toys for Tots Toy Drive Event on November 28 at the Blue<br />

Valley Farm Show Complex such a great success! This year, we were able<br />

to end the day's festivities by filling the back of a military vehicle with 17<br />

overflowing boxes of new, unwrapped toys <strong>and</strong> bikes for children in need in<br />

Northampton County. This annual event would not be possible without the help<br />

of our small but mighty Slate <strong>Belt</strong> community.<br />

This year, the afternoon kicked off with the arrival of Santa <strong>and</strong> his elf<br />

by helicopter, courtesy of Mr. Carl Tolino. Soon after, the United States Marines<br />

<strong>and</strong> their mascot Chesty were escorted to the grounds by the Plainfield <strong>and</strong><br />

Washington Township Volunteer Fire companies, the Slate <strong>Belt</strong> Regional Police<br />

Department <strong>and</strong> Margaret the Pink Fire Truck with the Guardians of the<br />

Pink Ribbon. Children in the crowd were all given flags donated by County<br />

Councilman Matthew Dietz, before the Bangor School District Choir officially<br />

opened the event with the National Anthem <strong>and</strong> a medley of Christmas carols.<br />

Many local businesses <strong>and</strong> groups donated their time, products, <strong>and</strong> services to<br />

make the day fun <strong>and</strong> festive. Bangor Daycare, <strong>The</strong> Slate <strong>Belt</strong> YMCA, Pen Argyl<br />

High School Art Students, Ignite Fitness, Miss Rose's Preschool, Girl Scout Troop<br />

#8420 <strong>and</strong> Washington Township Fire Company sponsored activity tables for<br />

the children. Dave Sisson of Dice Productions provided Christmas music <strong>and</strong><br />

entertainment, <strong>and</strong> Kevin Ramaley & the Rockin' Photobooth made photos with<br />

Santa possible. After each photo, each child was given a pack of cookies thanks<br />

to a kind donation from Mondelez Global LLC. <strong>The</strong> Green Knight Wrestling Club<br />

sponsored a contest for decorating ornaments, which were donated to a local<br />

family along with a Christmas tree. Anna, Elsa, <strong>and</strong> Olaf from the movie Frozen<br />

appeared, courtesy of Bangor Daycare <strong>and</strong> Leiser's Rentals, <strong>and</strong> the Star Wars<br />

Characters of the M<strong>and</strong>olorian Merc Costume Club. <strong>The</strong> DeVaLug Lego group<br />

<strong>and</strong> Gospel Lionel Club each constructed a display,<strong>and</strong> <strong>The</strong> Allentown & Auburn<br />

Railroad sponsored 4 passes for their holiday train. We deeply appreciate the<br />

help of all of the vendors <strong>and</strong> groups that made the day so special.<br />

This year, in order to help as many children possible, we extended a<br />

challenge to participating local businesses. Each business was given donation<br />

boxes, <strong>and</strong> the one that collected the most toys by the day of our event would<br />

win free advertising. We would like to congratulate Bangor Daycare on winning<br />

this contest, <strong>and</strong> thank Mike of the Blue Valley Times for sponsoring the Toys<br />

for Tots Business Challenge.<br />

Most importantly, we would like to say THANK YOU to the men <strong>and</strong> women<br />

of the U.S. Marines, who are the inspiration for this event. <strong>The</strong>ir dedication to<br />

both protecting our country abroad, <strong>and</strong> keeping Christmas at home special for<br />

children in need, prove that they are truly heroes of Christmas. Portl<strong>and</strong> Lodge<br />

No. 311 thanks them, along with all of the other volunteers <strong>and</strong> sponsors, <strong>and</strong> looks<br />

forward to doing it once again next year.<br />

District 10 Chorus accepts Bangor Students<br />

Eight Bangor Area High School students were accepted into the Pennsylvania<br />

Music Educators Association District 10 Chorus.<br />

Selected students are Maya Ramautar, Elisha Hoyte, Lauren Steinert, Kevin<br />

Rutzler, Allison Strunk, Kristofer Swanson, Amber Ward, <strong>and</strong> Jaden Boyd. <strong>The</strong>y<br />

were among over 700 students who auditioned from schools in the counties of<br />

Berks, Carbon, Lehigh, Monroe, Northampton, Pike, <strong>and</strong> Schuylkill. Of that, 200<br />

were selected to create the District 10 Chorus.<br />

<strong>The</strong> students will be traveling to Delaware Valley High School, in Milford, to<br />

participate in the festival Feb. 4 through Feb. 6. While there, they will work under<br />

the direction of Dr. Raymond Wise of Indiana University to present two concerts<br />

to the public. <strong>The</strong> students will also be audition for the Region V Chorus. Onehalf<br />

of the District 10 participants will move onto the Region V level.<br />

As each year comes to an end, I am reminded<br />

of the time I asked Gr<strong>and</strong>mom what she <strong>and</strong><br />

Gr<strong>and</strong>pop did for New Year’s Eve back in the day.<br />

She said Roseto was famous for their “Spaghetti<br />

Tradition at Midnight.” Ladies <strong>and</strong> gentlemen<br />

would all go to their social club in the early<br />

evening on New Year’s Eve. <strong>The</strong>y would play cards, drink <strong>and</strong> have their<br />

Antipasto. Everyone took pleasure in the olives, roasted peppers, all the good<br />

homemade Capicola, Prosciutto, fresh Mozzarella, aged Casa Cavola cheese<br />

<strong>and</strong> of course, as always, good bread along with the home made wine.<br />

Around 10 pm the ladies would leave <strong>and</strong> go home to make their<br />

homemade spaghetti for the rest of the evening’s festivities. <strong>The</strong> men<br />

remained at the club to warm the Sunday gravy (gravy because the red sauce<br />

contained meatballs, sausage, pork ribs, beef braciole). <strong>The</strong>n they got the large<br />

pots of boiling water ready for the ladies who would return around 11:30 pm<br />

with their homemade Spaghetti. <strong>The</strong>ir expression was, “throw the spaghetti”<br />

which meant to put it in the boiling water. This was done at four minutes<br />

before midnight because homemade pasta does not take long to cook.<br />

<strong>The</strong> count down began; 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 SPAGHETTI! <strong>The</strong> spaghetti<br />

was drained at the stroke of midnight <strong>and</strong> everyone would start their New Year<br />

with a bowl of spaghetti. This tradition was supposed to bring them luck in the<br />

New Year. You are always lucky when you can have homemade spaghetti!<br />

We wish all our readers a “Buon Capo Anno” (Happy New Year). Thank you<br />

for all your wonderful comments on my memoirs, when I was Growing Up in<br />

the Butcher Shop.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Blue Valley Diner held a Christmas party <strong>and</strong> Customer Appreciation dinner<br />

on Sunday, Decemeber 20th for their customers. Customers were invited for a<br />

special dinner at the diner. Mohammed Abada said this is just a small token of<br />

appreciation, a way of saying thank you to all of our loyal customers for their<br />

continued loyalty <strong>and</strong> support. Over 200 people attended the dinner.<br />

Thaw roast completely <strong>and</strong> remove plastic packaging.<br />

Heat oven to 350 F.<br />

Prepare rub by combining salt, pepper, garlic, herbs <strong>and</strong> 1/2 cup of olive oil.<br />

Mix 2 tablespoons of rub with remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil <strong>and</strong> toss with<br />

potatoes <strong>and</strong> onions.<br />

Liberally rub all sides of roast with remaining rub, including in between bones.<br />

Put any excess rub on top.<br />

Place roast on foil lined sheet pan <strong>and</strong> spread potatoes <strong>and</strong> onions around sides<br />

of roast. Cook on center rack of oven for approximately 2 hours <strong>and</strong> 20<br />

minutes to 2 hours <strong>and</strong> 35 minutes for a 9-pound roast, or until internal<br />

temperature reaches 145 F in the middle.<br />

Let rest for 10-15 minutes before cutting away string <strong>and</strong> slicing between<br />

bones for 16 even portions. Serve with roasted red potatoes <strong>and</strong> pearl onions<br />

in natural au jus.<br />

<strong>The</strong> end of the year brings much happiness, nostalgia,<br />

<strong>and</strong> stress. We have overindulged on good food from<br />

Thanksgiving, Christmas <strong>and</strong> New Years Eve celebrations.<br />

We begin the year feeling tired, overweight <strong>and</strong> just “blah.”<br />

Because of this, it is common for people to make new year’s resolutions<br />

<strong>and</strong> most of them involve weight loss, exercise, dietary changes or all<br />

three. Although, I believe this to be great, I also think that detoxing the<br />

body before is even better. What better time to detox the body than right<br />

after the holidays <strong>and</strong> at the beginning of another year. Detoxing doesn’t<br />

have to be complicated. One can detox using simple methods. One way<br />

is to go on a raw detox diet for about a week. If you can do longer than<br />

go for it. If you can’t, even a day or two is better than none. This diet<br />

consists of consuming raw <strong>and</strong> organic fruits, vegetables, <strong>and</strong> lots of pure<br />

filtered water. Your colon will thank you <strong>and</strong> so will your body. Although<br />

you will feel hungry frequently you can eat any fruit or vegetable when<br />

this happens. Make smoothies, juices, or salads. Avoid over consumption<br />

of high sugar fruits. Avoid dairy, meat, processed foods, grains, sugar,<br />

alcohol, <strong>and</strong> caffeine during your detox. Add healthy fats like olive, coconut,<br />

<strong>and</strong> avocado oil. Use apple cider vinegar in your salads <strong>and</strong> water. Raw<br />

apple cider vinegar aids in digestion <strong>and</strong> cleaning of the intestines. Drink<br />

it first thing in the mornings <strong>and</strong> evenings before bed with lots of water<br />

throughout the day. Magnesium sulfate or epsom salt baths also aid in<br />

detoxing the body. <strong>The</strong> skin is the body’s largest organ, <strong>and</strong> has the ability<br />

to absorb, filter toxins, <strong>and</strong> deliver nutrients to the body. Most people are<br />

deficient in magnesium <strong>and</strong> this is the best way to get it. Add one to two<br />

cups of epsom salts to a warm bath <strong>and</strong> soak for at least 20 minutes. You<br />

end up feeling very relaxed <strong>and</strong> ready for bed. I always add epsom salts<br />

to my kid’s baths as well. <strong>The</strong>re are many other ways to detox like colon<br />

cleanses with enemas or herbal supplements. It is<br />

best to research the best method for you or consult<br />

with your physician. Simple things like sweating<br />

or drinking lemon water aids detoxing so there is<br />

no excuse. Just make a conscious effort. Wishing<br />

3 STEPS TO KICK OFF A YEAR OF GOOD HEALTH<br />

(Family Features) A fresh beginning with a new year is the perfect time for a health assessment<br />

to ensure you are ready to take on a full <strong>and</strong> active year ahead. Even if you're feeling great, it's<br />

a smart practice to take time to identify potential problems before they become more serious<br />

health concerns.<br />

Early detection of ailments, such as cardiovascular disease, can significantly impact an<br />

individual's ability to cope with the disease, allowing you to make adjustments such as changes<br />

in diet <strong>and</strong> lifestyle, or when necessary, drug therapies <strong>and</strong> other medical treatments. Delaying<br />

detection of this serious disease until its more advanced stages can have dire consequences.<br />

With these three steps, you can get a better picture of your cardiovascular health <strong>and</strong> identify<br />

silent, hidden risk factors (like plaque in your arteries) that you may not even know are there.<br />

1. Get your blood pressure checked. Blood pressure measures how much force a person's blood<br />

is putting on the artery walls as the heart pumps. High blood pressure, or hypertension, occurs<br />

when your heart has to work extra hard to pump blood throughout the body. High blood pressure<br />

often happens when arteries lose their elasticity through hardening caused by cholesterol,<br />

plaque or scarring. Many people do not experience symptoms of high blood pressure, so it's<br />

important to have your blood pressure checked periodically. Screening for high blood pressure<br />

involves placing a pressure cuff around your upper arm to monitor both diastolic <strong>and</strong> systolic<br />

blood pressure. A normal systolic reading is between 90 <strong>and</strong> 119, <strong>and</strong> a normal diastolic reading<br />

is 60-79.<br />

2. Get your cholesterol checked. A simple finger-stick screening measures total cholesterol<br />

as well as three different kinds of lipids in your blood (HDL, LDL <strong>and</strong> triglycerides), which are<br />

important in determining your heart health. Low-density lipoprotein, or LDL, is known as the<br />

"bad" cholesterol <strong>and</strong> can build up in the walls of the arteries that feed the heart <strong>and</strong> brain.<br />

Along with other substances, it can form plaque - a thick, hard deposit that can clog those<br />

arteries. High-density lipoprotein, or HDL, is known as "good" cholesterol because it carries LDL<br />

away from the arteries <strong>and</strong> back to the liver, where it's passed from the body. A high HDL level<br />

helps prevent heart disease, while a low HDL level increases the risk of heart attack <strong>and</strong> stroke.<br />

Triglycerides are the most common type of fat. Like cholesterol, they circulate in blood but are<br />

stored in the body for extra energy. A high triglyceride level combined with a low HDL or high<br />

LDL can speed up the process of plaque formation in the arteries.<br />

3. Learn about other risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Many people in the early stages of<br />

cardiovascular disease are asymptomatic, meaning they have no symptoms to indicate their<br />

health is at risk. Some common risk factors include age (55 <strong>and</strong> older), family history, tobacco<br />

use <strong>and</strong> high blood-pressure, other factors, such as high cholesterol, aren't as easily observed.<br />

Preventive health screenings, such as those provided by Life Line Screening, can give you a<br />

fuller picture of how risk factors may be stacking up. <strong>The</strong> screenings are designed by doctors<br />

<strong>and</strong> administered by trained professionals to help detect hidden health issues. Within a couple<br />

of weeks, you can receive easy-to-underst<strong>and</strong> test results to share with your doctor so you can<br />

work together to prevent serious problems before they start.<br />

Shelter Dog<br />

are full of lovable dogs of all breeds,<br />

sizes <strong>and</strong> ages deserving of a good<br />

home <strong>and</strong> ready to become your next<br />

four-legged family member. In fact,<br />

according to the American Society for<br />

the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals,<br />

nearly 2 million dogs are adopted into<br />

new families each year.<br />

However, choosing the right dog is<br />

just the beginning. <strong>The</strong> first weeks<br />

after bringing home an adopted pet<br />

are critical. It’s a time to get to know<br />

one another <strong>and</strong> build a lifelong<br />

connection. Here are some steps to<br />

help ease the transition:<br />

Create a pet-friendly environment. Keep items that are unsafe, such as<br />

chemicals <strong>and</strong> certain house plants, out of reach. Cords <strong>and</strong> objects that invite<br />

chewing also should be tucked away. If certain areas will be off limits, use baby<br />

gates to block them.<br />

Expect accidents. While house training a puppy is to be expected, you may find<br />

that an older dog needs help in this area as well. <strong>The</strong> stress of transitioning into<br />

a new household can lead to accidents, so keep this in mind <strong>and</strong> be sure to<br />

provide your new pet with lots of potty breaks, patience <strong>and</strong> instruction.<br />

Start with smart nutrition. Providing your new dog with a high-quality diet<br />

from the beginning can contribute to a lifetime of whole body health. Chose a<br />

Snowshoes <strong>and</strong> Hiking Poles Available<br />

Monday thru Friday, 8:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m., Jacobsburg Visitor Center, 400 Belfast<br />

Road, Nazareth. Borrow snowshoe equipment to use on Jacobsburg’s trails this<br />

winter! Snowshoes are available for folks of any age or shoe size, including small<br />

children. Snowshoes will not be made available during times of insufficient snow<br />

cover, usually at least five inches of snow is required. To borrow equipment you<br />

must provide a driver’s license or other form of state issued identification. For more<br />

First Day Hikes<br />

Friday, January 1, 10:00 a.m. <strong>and</strong> 1:00 p.m., Get out <strong>and</strong> get hiking on the first day<br />

of 2016! Join center educator Rick Wiltraut for two interpretive hikes at Jacobsburg.<br />

We will explore the old growth forest of Henrys Woods. <strong>The</strong> hikes will leave at<br />

10:00 AM <strong>and</strong> 1:00 PM from the Visitor Center at 400 Belfast Road. Each hike will<br />

be two miles long over moderate terrain. <strong>The</strong> trail is not suitable for strollers. Bring<br />

comfortable hiking shoes, a water bottle, <strong>and</strong> wear layers. Registration is required;<br />

please specify whether you would like to join us for the morning or afternoon hike.<br />

Winter Plants Snowshoe Walk<br />

Thursday, January 7, 1:00-2:30 p.m., Join educator Lauren Forster for a winter<br />

Family Night: Fish Printing<br />

Friday January 8, 6:30-7:30 p.m., Learn the Japanese art of Gyotaku or fish<br />

printing. We’ll use paint <strong>and</strong> model fish to make prints of various Pennsylvania<br />

species. We will also study their anatomy <strong>and</strong> habitat needs to create accurate<br />

paintings of fish in the wild. Paper will be provided, but you are welcome to bring<br />

a b<strong>and</strong>ana or t-shirt to print on. It is recommended that you wear old clothes or a<br />

smock. Registration is required.<br />

Winter Bird Count<br />

Saturday, January 16, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Join us as we spend the day birding at<br />

Jacobsburg <strong>and</strong> other places in the Bushkill Creek Watershed. We’ll count birds <strong>and</strong><br />

look for oddball species that may have w<strong>and</strong>ered into the area. Participants should<br />

dress for the weather <strong>and</strong> bring binoculars <strong>and</strong> a lunch. Registration is required.<br />

History of Snowshoeing<br />

Eagle Watching along the Delaware<br />

Saturday, January 30, 8:00 AM- 5:00 PM. <strong>The</strong> upper Delaware River is one<br />

of the best places in the east to observe wintering Bald Eagles. Join us for this<br />

trip as we venture up along the river in the scenic Delaware Water Gap National<br />

Recreation Area from Arrow Isl<strong>and</strong> to Milford in search of these magnificent<br />

birds. Golden Eagles have also been observed on these trips in the past. This is<br />

a great opportunity for photographers. Please dress for the weather <strong>and</strong> bring<br />

binoculars <strong>and</strong> a lunch. <strong>The</strong>re will be a stop for snacks <strong>and</strong> hot beverages along<br />

the way. Registration is required. Limited van transportation is available for first<br />

time participants.<br />

New Year's Traditions<br />

<strong>The</strong>re are many New Year's traditions we observe to ring in the new year. Many<br />

of these traditions in various cultures involve food. One common food eaten is<br />

black eyed peas. Some say they resemble coins <strong>and</strong> are thought to bring good<br />

luck to those who eat them. Pork is another food that is said to bring good luck.<br />

Pigs move forward while rooting for food. In many cultures it is custom to eat<br />

pork on New Year's <strong>and</strong> believed your life will move forward if you eat pork.<br />

One Russian New Year’s tradition is to write a wish for the upcoming year on a<br />

piece of paper, then burn the paper <strong>and</strong> place the ashes in a glass of champagne,<br />

which needs to be consumed before the New Year for the wish to come true.<br />

In Spain eating 12 grapes as the clock strikes midnight is said to bring good<br />

fortune for all 12 months of the upcoming year. According to tradition, whoever<br />

eats 12 grapes as the clock chimes (one for each of the twelve chimes) will have<br />

good luck <strong>and</strong> a prosperous year.<br />

In Peru one of the most interesting New Year's traditions is the custom of telling<br />

the next year’s fortunes with the use of potatoes. Three potatoes are placed<br />

under a chair or sofa, one peeled, one half peeled <strong>and</strong> one unpeeled. At exactly<br />

midnight, one potato is chosen at r<strong>and</strong>om, <strong>and</strong> is said to predict the incoming<br />

year’s finances. <strong>The</strong> peeled potato signifies no money, the half-peeled potato a<br />

regular year <strong>and</strong> the unpeeled potato a great financial bounty in the year ahead.<br />

In Irel<strong>and</strong> New Year's Day, known as the "Day of the Buttered Bread" in Gaelic,<br />

is traditionally marked by banging loaves of bread on doors <strong>and</strong> walls to chase<br />

the bad luck out of a house <strong>and</strong> to invite good spirits in.<br />

In Chile putting money in the bottom of your shoe is said to bring prosperity for<br />

the new year.<br />

In Greece, the custom of eating Vasilópita, a cake that contains a coin or other<br />

small object. It is said that whoever gets the slice of cake with the coin or object<br />

will have good luck in the new year.<br />

Whatever festive traditions you observe to ring in the new year may it be a<br />

happy one filled with family, friends, <strong>and</strong> food.<br />

Tips to Save Money at the Pump<br />

(Family Features) As gas prices continue to drop, motorists should take<br />

advantage of their savings at the pump <strong>and</strong> invest it back into their vehicles. By<br />

spending a little now to increase fuel efficiency, drivers can multiply fuel savings<br />

<strong>and</strong> save more money at the pump, according to the Car Care Council.<br />

Here are a few simple steps for motorists to be car care aware to improve fuel<br />

efficiency <strong>and</strong> save money in the long run:<br />

• Engine performance: Keep your car properly tuned to improve gas mileage by<br />

an average of four percent.<br />

• Tire pressure: Keep tires properly inflated <strong>and</strong> improve gas mileage by up to<br />

3.3 percent.<br />

• Motor oil: Improve gas mileage by 1 to 2 percent by using the grade of motor<br />

oil recommended by the manufacturer.<br />

• Air filters: Replacing clogged air filters on older vehicles can improve fuel<br />

economy <strong>and</strong> will improve performance <strong>and</strong> acceleration on all vehicles.<br />

• Gas cap: Damaged, loose or missing gas caps allow gas to vaporize into the<br />

air.<br />

is to break down. Ensuring<br />

your vehicle is winterready<br />

now is a sensible<br />

approach to avoid the<br />

inconvenience of being<br />

str<strong>and</strong>ed out in the cold.<br />

"An investment of an hour or two to have your vehicle checked is all it takes<br />

to have peace of mind <strong>and</strong> help avoid the cost <strong>and</strong> hassle of car trouble during<br />

severe weather," said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council.<br />

<strong>The</strong> experts at the Car Care Council recommend the following steps to<br />

winterize your vehicle:<br />

* For good visibility, make sure that exterior <strong>and</strong> interior lights work <strong>and</strong><br />

headlights are properly aimed. Also check to see that heaters, defrosters, lights<br />

<strong>and</strong> wipers work properly. Consider winter wiper blades <strong>and</strong> use cold weather<br />

washer fluid.<br />

* Very cold temperatures reduce a vehicle's battery power so it's important to<br />

keep the connections clean, tight <strong>and</strong> corrosion-free. Batteries don't always give<br />

warning signs before they fail completely, so if your vehicle's battery is more<br />

than three years old, it's wise to replace it.<br />

* Have the brakes inspected <strong>and</strong> check the tire tread depth <strong>and</strong> tire pressure. If<br />

snow <strong>and</strong> ice are a problem in your area, consider special tires designed to grip<br />

slick roads. During winter, tire pressure should be checked weekly.<br />

* Winter magnifies existing problems such as pings, hard starts, sluggish<br />

performance or rough idling, so have the problems fixed before the<br />

temperatures drop.<br />

* Clean, flush <strong>and</strong> put new antifreeze in the cooling system as needed <strong>and</strong><br />

have the exhaust system checked for carbon monoxide leaks, which can be<br />

especially dangerous during cold weather driving when windows are closed.<br />

* Be diligent about changing the oil <strong>and</strong> filter at recommended intervals.<br />

Consider changing to "winter weight" oil if you live in a cold climate. Check the<br />

fuel, air <strong>and</strong> transmission filters at the same time.<br />

* Keep the gas tank at least half full at all times to decrease the chances of<br />

moisture forming in the gas lines <strong>and</strong> possibly freezing.<br />

* Check the tire pressure of the spare in the trunk <strong>and</strong> stock an emergency kit<br />

with an ice scraper <strong>and</strong> snowbrush, jumper cables, flashlight, blanket, extra<br />

clothes, bottled water, dry food snacks <strong>and</strong> medication.<br />

* Store important telephone numbers in your cell phone or glove box in case<br />

of a breakdown or travel emergency. Also keep a car care resource, such as<br />

the Car Care Council's 80-page Car Care Guide, in the glove box as a h<strong>and</strong>y<br />

reference tool.<br />
