Emily Christen and Silver Bells
My name is Emily Christen
and I am 13 years old. I love
school, reading, and singing in
the choir…I also love to ride.
I started riding six years ago, when
we moved to Sisters, Oregon. The
first year with my trainer Karen
O’Neal, I leased a pony named Minnie.
Then we bought my very own
pony, a 12-year-old Welsh/Thoroughbred
mare named Mykelti.
She came straight from a pasture
in Montana and had a wild spirit.
I had lots of work to do to get her
ready to show. Plus, I was only
seven years old myself. For three
and a half years, I showed her successfully
through Level 1 Jumpers
and Novice Level Eventing.
Sadly, I outgrew Sydney. We sold
her to a family in California. That
was one of the hardest
things I had ever done,
but Karen promised
we would find a
great horse that
would match
my abilities
and
ambitions.
NASS NEWS Summer 2010
He came to O’Neal Farms
as a 5-year-old for training
from breeder Judy Elkins.
I had seen a lot of sale horses come
through O’Neal Farms but never
one like him. He was very green,
but I had told my parents I wanted a
horse that I could help train. Karen
thought he might just be the fellow.
He was bigger than Sydney, 16.1 hh
and still growing. He was dappled
grey with black points - stunning!
From the very beginning, he was
a standout. He had all the qualities
I was looking for in my next
horse. He was an incredible mover
for dressage and had tons of
potential for jumping. What impressed
us most was his kindness
and his calm, gentle ways.
His name was Osceola, aka, “Ozzie”,
a Shagya/Hanoverian cross! (Amara’s
O’Biwon/Danika [Hanoverian]).
We bonded right away, and my parents
and I thought this beautiful,
grey gelding was the horse for me.
Shortly after purchasing my new
horse, I renamed him Silver Bells.
For the next year and a half, we
worked hard with Karen and started
showing at the Beginner
Novice Level. Ozzie
was great, but I made
some mistakes along
the way. We went home
a little disappointed for
the first three shows.
We tried again and finished
the 2009 season
with a first place at Novice
Level at the Young Rider
Horse Benefit in Auburn, WA.
Emily Christen and Silver Bells (continued)
This was a huge accomplishment for
me and Ozzie. I was so proud of him.
For the next few months, Ozzie and
I took a long winter break. After
chatting with my friend, Audrey-
Goldsmith, of Sequel Farms, I told
her about the great horse I now
owned, a Part Shagya-Arabian.
Audrey had never heard of the
breed and was very interested
to learn more about Shagyas.
My mom asked her if she would
be willing to help me out during
our break from eventing.
Audrey suggested I concentrate
on dressage; it would strengthen
Ozzie’s core muscles and make him
stronger for jumping. Audrey even
suggested that
I register Ozzie
with his breed
association and
enter a few dressage
shows. I was
a little skeptical
because I loved
to jump and any
show without
jumping, well…
So, while my
mom got busy
sending in the
registration papers,
Ozzie and I got to work on
dressage. We took a dressage clinic
from Sue Sherry, sent in the entry
forms for the first dressage show of
the season, and packed our bags
for Devonwood, in Sherwood, OR.
It was decided that I should start
at Training Level, tests 3 and 4.
The usual rainy Oregon weather
didn’t disappoint and neither did
we. Ozzie and I came away with
three blue ribbons and awards!
Our highest score was a 68.4!
Audrey was very proud of me,
but mostly I was proud of Ozzie.
My goal for the rest of 2010 is to
qualify for the ODS Championships,
Northwest Regionals and compete
for a USDF All-Breeds Award. Next
year I hope to return to eventing at
Training Level with Karen O’Neal.
Ozzie is a star. Whether we are at
a show or a clinic, everyone wants
to know more about him. I smile
and proudly say, “He is a Shagya”.
Thanks again for this opportunity
to share with your readers about
Silver Bells and the Shagya breed.
On Mother’s Day, we put a saddle
on Klassic Roxanne (Bayram/Wes-
Kays Kold Kash by Khambridge ox),
aka “Roxy”, and lunged her in the
ring. I had put a saddle on her before,
but not tightened the girth.
We also lunged her several times
in the last year. This time, we put
an old endurance saddle on her.
It’s synthetic and doesn’t weigh
much. She bucked a little on the
lunge line but that was good.
Then we put on John, my 11-yearold
grandson. Rena led Roxie once
around the ring each direction.
Then we put Ellie on (10 years old)
and did once around each direction.
So far so good! Jack (Rena’s husband)
asked me, “when is Rena going
to ride?” and I said, “Next!” So,
Rena got on and I led Roxy, just
once around, since everything was
going so well. That was a good
first day!
Roxie is going to love trail riding.
We are still hoping she will grow a
little taller. Her dam is only 14.2, so
if she would just make 15 hands,
that would be great!
I’m hoping to introduce equipment to Royal Kapricia AF (Shagya Royal
AF/Kadence DWB), aka “Gracie”, in a few weeks. She will be three next
month and is all of 17 hh and 1,300 lbs - she is huge! Anyway, I’m not in
a big hurry to start any lunging as her knees are still open. So, the only
work we will be doing is bitting, etc.
Gracie is growing up to be quite a lady. She had blankets on over the
winter and never batted an eyelash. She knows to come to the back door
when we arrive to bring her and her pasture mate in for the night. Gracie
also loves to have the crown of her head scratched and nuzzles me
to cooperate! She has been doing her lessons on the cross ties and has
learned to step one foot at a time away from you. I’d give her all A’s on
those counts.
I hope to take Gracie to Devon in September to show in the breeding
division.
SILVER SPRING, MD
After training all winter with Gwyn and Lilly Davis, Shagya Skamp AF
(Janos/Samantha by *Amurath Samurai) arrived in Maryland on April 21.
I was glowing, of course! Since horses aren’t allowed in my condo, I am
boarding Skamp at a beautiful facility near BWI airport. There, we have
access to indoor and outdoor arenas, plus direct access to a state forest
full of trails. And lots of turnout!
In the two months since Skamp arrived, we have: established Skamp’s
place in the gelding herd (he isn’t afraid to kick back!), found a saddle
that fits, transitioned to Dr. Cook’s bitless bridle, mastered the wash rack,
Skamp and Jamie - together at last!
the cross ties & the clippers, achieved consistent ground-tying, had our
first dressage lesson (Kathy Nelson also happens to be a Hungarian Horse breeder - small world!) and survived
a 45-mile, 2-day training ride with my edurance buddies. (Skamp ate, drank and conquered all terrain like a
pro - calm, cool and collected. Noone would believe me that he was 4 years old and new to the sport!) I cannot
give enough kudos to Adele for the top-quality breeding and to Lilly for the world-class training!
The rest of the summer will be a mix of arena work and trail work. I also look forward to celebrating Skamp’s
fifth birthday later this month. I am confident we will be ready for our endurance debut - a25-miler in September.
I also hope to bring Skamp to a few local shows, just for fun. I can’t decide whether to keep Skamp’s mop
of a mane (endurance style) or trim it (hunter style). I’m also thick in the debate of “to shoe or not to shoe”.
In any case, every day training with Skamp is a joy. He is a fantastic ambassador for the Shagya breed.
We hope everyone had a good winter!!! The last snow disappeared
two days ago on our ranch, all summer birds are arrived, the horses
have short shiny hair again (when they don’t take a mud bath) and
now we are enjoying our Murad/Dahri foal and three little calves. This
is our first mix between Angus and Dexter cows and we are excited.
Our horse herd is still the same size and we still have three horses for
sale. The foal named RAA’s Dahmu (*Murad/*Dahri by D’Artagnan)
also will be for sale later this year.
Our horses are CEM free. Because of this, we cannot take U.S. mares
for breeding this year. We are sorry. Have a great spring and summer.
PHIL AND TERRY HEY | SIOUx CITY, IA
Spring has sprung here on the prairie, and the not a moment too soon.
We were so glad to see the snow melt - we had over 60” of it over the
course of the winter, but the melting snow did cause a few problems.
First, “Flow’”s stall flooded. (Florence: Baron AF/Flora AA by H. Bravo) It
took about three weeks to dry out. In the meantime, Flow had to bunk
with “Count”. (Cosmos Whitner: Shagya Sun/Ravenwood Cresent ox by
Saud El Ameer ox) Fortunately our stalls are large.
Then, we noticed our gravel driveway getting some pretty deep ruts.
Phil called a gravel company and ordered a load of crushed rock, leaving
specific instructions for the driver to dump it at the top of the driveway,
as it wasn’t nearly firm enough to support the load of a heavy dump
truck. The driver arrived and Phil was waiting for him. He rolled down his
window and said “do you think I can drive down there and turn around?”
Phil said, “No! You’ll get stuck. Go a few yards down and turn around, then come back and dump your load.”
“Kai”, “Count”, and “Flow”: three happy Shagyas!
Shagya Emir AF and Terry Hey
Well, guess what? The driver did that - turned around in
a neighbor’s firmer, dryer barnyard, then came back and
drove down our driveway anyway! The result was catastrophic.
. . it got thoroughly stuck and required some
heavy duty equipment to get it out.
In the process, our driveway was churned to the consistency
of a swamp. I am not exaggerating! I came home
from work that night to find poor Phil vainly struggling
to spread the crushed rock with his tractor, to no avail. I
backed up, parked on the side of the road, walked down
the drive way and sank to my knees. It was 18” deep, the
consistency of pudding. It took two dump truck loads
of rock the size of baseballs to fix it; one to create a base
and the other to create a surface to drive on.
But April was a lovely month, the grass is lush and long already and our tulips and daffodils have come and
gone, and how we are enjoying the lovely purple Dame’s Rocket and Flox and Siberian lily.
I am happy to say that Shagya Emir AF (Shagya Scherzo AF/Echo Daal by H. Bravo), aka “Kai”, and I are now
schooling First Level! We did our first schooling show May 8, near Des Moines, and I froze. It was around 40
degrees with grey skies and strong winds. I felt quite heroic braiding his mane with frozen fingers. It’s a good
thing I packed Kai’s stable blanket and fleece cooler; he needed them as he is all shed out.
PHIL AND TERRY HEY | SIOUx CITY, IA
We pulled off a decent ride in Training 2 and won that with a 62.5%. Test 4 wasn’t as successful. I failed to keep
him straight in the right canter circle and we blew a lead. However, the judge said we did a lovely well balanced
counter canter! Our next show is the Iowa Dressage Classic the third weekend in June18-19-20. I am
hoping that we will be able to enter First Level Test 1 by then.
We drove Flow in the cart for the first time this spring when my uncle paid us an unexpected visit and we treated
him to a ride. I told him we had a 1883 model of a Ferrari! That mare is certainly ‘all business” when it comes
to driving and really moves along. I think any 19th century farmer would have been proud to show her off.
When we drive her, motorists slow waaaayy down and grin as they get a good look at the pretty bay mare trotting
along. I have also been enjoying trail riding her. Phil is toying with the idea of hopping on this summer;
we’ll see!
Our farrier put special shoes on Count to help support his tendon, and it seems to have helped. He seems to
have settled in his role as herd leader and turn-out supervisor when the three Shagyas are turned out into our
big 35-acre pasture. Happy riding and schooling!
Spring is bringing busy times, though I will not have any foals this year.
It’s late April and still dealing with wet, WET, WET weather!!
*Thassia (Bahadur/Thirza by Sulayman), Samantha (*Amurath
Samurai/*Kornelia by Koheilan I) and Sophie AF (*Shandor/Samantha
by *Amurath Samurai) will be bred to KB Omega Fahim+++//. I have to
ship to myself with my own stallion since he is with the trainer that is
10 hours away and being in the middle of show season, he can’t come
home to do his job. (Editor’s Update: Elaine confirmed that *Thassia
and Samantha are in foal! Waiting a week more to see if Sohie AF is in
foal, too.)
Speaking of shipping, Meg is now “international”!!! He has three mares booked in Switzerland and a bank of
straws is being stored there for future European use.
Show season will begin in May. Joining the team is Shagya’s Serena AF. She will debut in June with training
and first level dressage and sport horse under saddle.
The youngsters, KB Sequoia Fahim, KB Sitka Fahim and KB Sawyer Fahim are all doing well. (See details in the
Sales section.) Sequoia is nearly 16 hands as a two year old. I guess I named her aptly!!
OLD LYME, CT
Unfortunately, I have no great news to share about my horses. They’ve been primarily “lawn ornaments” for
the past couple of years.
Shagya Sundance AF (*Shandor/*Aminah by Koheilan I), aka “Nandor”, doesn’t get worked enough, though
he is a good boy. We’ve been trying to find a job for my mare, Shagya’s SziSzi AF (*Shandor/*Shagya II-2 by
Shagya II). I have considered trying to place her as a possible broodmare (NASS approved, but not foaled successfully
yet). A friend who drives started to ground drive her last year, but hasn’t gotten very far although she
seems to like it (she’s quite smart). So, SziSzi has been Nandor’s constant companion.
In April, we sold our farm and have the two horses temporarily at a backyard rental with a caretaker. A safe
place...but nowhere to ride. We are looking for another home for us all.
I hope to have more pleasant news about my two before too long!
finished our first endurance ride
of the season (Cache Creek, West
up and down with good footing.
There was a scary river crossing
that had a steep bank down into
muddy water that she carefully
and bravely traversed. We went
barefoot without a problem. Her
his coffin joint last fall and has
been recovering since that time.
We just started back under saddle
and he is doing well. Here
he is enjoying his down time!
Follow Hope turned 8 this spring
and is still maturing. We cross train
with dressage and a little jumping.
She really likes to jump! Out on
She would make a great
We plan on doing one ride a
again this year. I showed my older Shagya mare,
Sapphire (*Oman/*Szikra by Saphiro) last year along
with a quarter horse mare. I did show my 6-yearold
*Shandor gelding, Shandor’s Surya, or Sunny
(*Shandor/Sapphire by *Oman) in the last show of
the season, but have concentrated on his training all
winter and spring.
Sunny and I did a 3-month caveletti clinic once a
week , which ended in March, working on Sunny’s
suspension and extension. He is really coming
along nicely as a dressage horse as we take weekly
dressage lessons.
My Janos mare, Carmen Daal, (Janos/Shandor’s Charisma
by *Shandor) is 5 years old and recently had
60 days training under saddle. She is a wonderful,
intense mare, but is too much horse for me as I turn
60 this year. So, she is for sale.
The winter looks like it is finally subsiding in Montana,
so I am looking forward to riding Sapphire and
Sunny on the trails as well as showing this year.
Wagons HO!!!!
Finally, after endless planning, we are moving to Tennessee.
Culleoka is a small town about 40 miles south of Nashville and
just west of Shelbyville. We were very fortunate that our farm
was not touched by the recent flooding in the Nashville area.
Thirteen horses will be making the move. The first seven will
leave around May 28. The remainding six will go on the flip-flop turn-around. A caravan indeed! Horse trailers,
U-haul trucks, a load of horse panels and gates etc. and of course our eight doggies.
I think this is going to be another chapter in the proverbial book when this move is over. I will have pictures
to share in the next newsletter. Hopefully, we should have things organized by mid-June. We will have our
website updated ASAP with new contact info etc. www.tanglewoodshagyafarms.com. Enjoy your summer.
MJL Shagala (*Shandor/MJL Jasmine), Nina AF (Janos/*Niobe by
Balaton) and Felicity(*Oman/May Folly ox by *Fol Yasmeen) have
settled into their new home very nicely. It has been a real pleasure
to look out of our windows into the pasture and see them
all grazing happily. We have plans to build a new barn before
this winter providing too many other projects do not take precedence.
It has been a lot of fun since I would rather shovel horse
manure and work in the garden than cook or clean house! Nothing
like manure management. Did I hear – going green?
This past May, Monique Vincent was in Atlanta and delighted once
again to have her company at the Two Bucks Bed & Breakfast. Monique offered to work Shagala and Nina
and show me a few pointers, which I enjoyed. If all goes well I have plans to start some endurance rides the
start of the 2011 season with Shagala providing I do what is needed for us to be ready. I am hoping Nina will
follow providing my young rider is also ready. It’s a slow start…but a start in the right direction for us.
No foals this year but plans for two next season are on the front burner… Life is good!
NEWCASTLE, WY
Thank you so much to Elaine and all the NASS folks that make the
NASS Performance Awards possible. We had some wild weather
all spring, with wind and snow squalls, sleet, hail, you name it. Last
Sunday we finally had the first in nice day in months but it was still
a little windy/stormy. I hopped on “Shanny” (Shannon AF: *Shandor/Lillian).
He was really fresh and I wound up back in the dirt!
I was hoping to start some eventing this season but wasn’t able to
get many lessons in due to weather. If I can do some financial juggling,
I’ll have my trainer, Craig Heckert, take Shannon to Powder
Basin in Gillette. It’s a two-day event that is only about six weeks
away and my ribs need to knit before I can get back on. I’m hoping
to do one later this summer or Windy Wyoming in Laramie in
September. Wish us luck. Thanks , I hope all the horses and Shagya
people are well have a good season.
Patty Betts
OLYMPIA, WA
This has been a busy spring. Besides
continuing ground training
for our 2- and 3- year old boys (Rising
Star and Rhuidean), we had
some equine guests arrive in April.
Bridget (Almos/Bravita AF by H.
Bravo) is a 10-year-old Shagya
mare owned by Cindy Smith who
lives in Saudi Arabia. Bridget
stayed a week before traveling to
Indiana to stay with Gwyn Davis
until Cindy returns to the
U.S. She is a tall, and gentle
mare who loves to be
groomed.
Our flashier guest is Almos
(*Shandor/*Arriva by
Bajar), Cindy’s 19-year-old
stallion. As I understand
it , Almos has made an
important contribution to
the Shagya gene pool. Almos
is here while Cindy locates
a longer term placement
for him.
Although he is a stallion,
Almos has been very easy.
He is basically quiet and gentle,
and likes people. Within a couple
of days he was nickering to us
when we brought his hay and is
easy to work around. He was on
the thin side when he arrived but
not too bad. He likes to walk a lot
so putting weight on will be a little
slower than I would like; but he has
a very good appetite. The vet gave
NASS NEWS Summer 2010
him a thorough inspection and all
is well. Adele Furby stopped by
shortly after Almos came to our
farm. She and Charlie were attending
a wedding in Seattle. She had
bred Almos and had stories to tell
about his birth and early days. She
also owns Rising Star’s sire, Starwalker
and had produced his dam
Ramona AF. So, the horses at my
farm definitely have connections
to her breeding program.
Almos - happy in his new foster home.
We had a good visit. She told me,
“Keep the stallion and the other
horses separate.” Good advice,
Adele. We have had to make some
adjustments such as keeping our
intact colt and mares out of adjacent
pastures. It has been interesting
to see what gets a stallion’s attention
and what doesn’t.
Dear friends and fellow
Shagya enthusiasts,
I need to find a home for my
stallion, Almos. He is an older
stallion by *Shandor out of
*Arriva by Bajar. He is currently
staying with Patty Betts in
Olympia, WA, but Patty does
not have the facilities to continue
caring for him.
Almos carries valuable
bloodlines and
produces classic
Shagya offspring. I
have not handled
him for a long
while, but I used to
hand breed him all
by myself and he
was great to work
with. Due to complications
at birth,
Almos is not trianed
for or suitable
for riding.
If you are interested in adopting
Almos please contact me.
I am in Saudi Arabia so e-mail
is the best way.
SISTERS, OR
I recently competed in two dressage shows at Devonwood Equestrian
Center with my horse Silver Bells. We competed in Training level tests
3 and 4 during the two days of each show. Out of the eight classes I
came away with six first places, one second and one third. My highest
score was a 71.6%! This was test 4. I am so proud of my boy!
I have qualified for regionals and the ODS championships in Training
level and I hope soon to move up to 1st level also and qualify there
as well.
LOUISVILLE, KY
Shagya’s Sarabande AF (*Shandor/
*Shagya II-2 by Saphir [Shagya II],
Balbona), aka “Sara”, has been such
a joy since Adele Furby sold her to
me in September of last year. She
spent her winter as “queen” of the
pasture and learning what life was
like as a working horse.
Sara learned to lunge first in a halter,
then surcingle, and finally fully
tacked. She was very accepting of
a snaffle and easy to work around
on the cross ties. Our trainer, who
specializes in classical dressage,
just loves Sara and intends to use
her in her video teaching series.
She thinks Sara is a rare combination
of brains and beauty. That’s a
Shagya!
In March, we took Sara to her first
show. She won both Sporthorse
In-hand and Shagya In-hand. She
had many admirers and we enjoyed
the opportunity to share the
breed. The judge even asked me if
I was looking to sell her!
NASS NEWS Summer 2010
She handled
her first show
beautifully,
curious and
watchful but
easy to handle.
A few weeks
later, my
trainer and I
backed Sara
for the first
time. At almost
16.1,
I was far
away from the ground! Sara
never worried us, though.
She was as calm as ever and our
trainer walked us around without
incident. She responded to simply
thigh pressure and halted at my inhale
-- such a smart girl!
Not two days after this milestone,
Sara became sick. The vet confirmed
strangles. Bless her heart,
Sara was an angel through the
Rebecca Blair and Shagya’s Sarabande AF
needles and pastes as her fifth
birthday came. Seven weeks of
stall rest have elapsed. She handled
her illness with grace and is
very happy to be able to stretch
her legs. This past week marks her
first back in work and she has been
a very happy girl. We look forward
to being mounted again soon and
more shows as the summer season
stretches before us.
Shagyas in the Show Ring
BY JOAN CLARK AND ELAINE KERRIGAN
The Pacific Coast Arabian Sport
Horse Classic at the Starr-Vaughn
Equestrian Center in Sloughhouse,
CA, near Sacramento, was held
June 4-6, 2010. This is one of our
favorite Arabian shows since it
includes In-Hand, Dressage and
Sport Horse Under Saddle classes
specifically for Shagyas. The show
management always does a fabulous
job. The beautiful facility is
very comfortable for horses and
riders.
We had a large contingent of
horses between the three owners.
Elaine Kerrigan took KB Omega
Fahim+++//, aka “Meg”, (ridden
by Chelsey Sibley) and Shagya’s
Serena AF, aka “Serena”, (ridden
by Elaine). Joan Clark showed KB
Shakami Fahim, aka “Shaka”. Chris
Bailey took KB Jull Fahim+/, aka
“Jull” (ridden by Chelsey Sibley)
and KB Kalilla Fahim, aka “Kali” (ridden
by Elaine). Serena and Shaka
were our two purebred Shagya-
Arabians. Meg is a purebred Arabian
stallion that is approved for
Shagya-Arabian breeding. Jull,
Kali and Shaka are half-Arabians
sired by Meg. Confusing, but that
sets the stage.
On Friday the fourth, Meg, Shaka
and Kali showed In-Hand. Meg
won two championships: open
division with Elaine and amateur
division with Joan. Shaka was
NASS NEWS Summer 2010
champion with Joan and Kali was
reserve champion with Elaine. Additionally,
Kali, Serena and Shaka
all showed in various Sport Horse
Under Saddle classes. In the Shagya
Under Saddle class, Shaka was
awarded first place and Serena
earned second place.
Saturday the fifth marked the first
dressage day. Meg won his FEI Intermediate
II test. Jull won her FEI
Prix St. Georges test. Shaka and
Serena showed in training level for
Shagyas, with the winning score
belonging to Shaka and second
place going to Serena. Serena also
showed in two first-level tests for
Shagyas and earned blue ribbons
for each. Shaka also showed two
training-level tests in the half-
Arabian division. She took second
and third place, respectively. Kali
took home the blue for training
level, test four and earned second
place in first level, test four.
Sunday the sixth was the last day
of the busy show. Meg won in his
first FEI Grand Prix test. Jull barely
missed a first place in her FEI
Intermediate I test. Shaka competed
in two half-Arabian training
level tests and earned second and
fourth place, respectively. Kali had
a repeat performance of Saturday:
first place in training level, test four
and second place in first level, test
four. Lucky Serena had the day off.
BY JOAN CLARK AND ELAINE KERRIGAN
It was sweltering hot for us north coast folks, but that didn’t
dampen our spirits. We always have a great time, the three
of us. We have a lot of fun laughing and joking around at the
shows. It’s a lot of hard work, but we all chip in and “get ‘er
done.” The camaraderie of our group is what makes showing
so rewarding! Our Shagyas have the natural physical talent that
everyone dreams of cultivating in their horses. These amazing
horses have the most wonderful gaits with elastic impulsion
and perfect tempo. The world of large and busy shows
is new to Shaka and Serena. Shaka is only 5 years old and Serena
has just started showing. They both proved what sensible
and steady dispositions the Shagya horses possess. The judges
were very impressed with our Shagyas, and so were we!
