21 Days of Prayer and Fasting
January 11 – 31, 2016

Opening Letter
“I call on you, O God, for you will answer me--give ear to me and hear my prayer.”
Psalm 17:6
Welcome to a twenty-one day journey of prayer and fasting for the Worthington Christian
School family. As we seek the Lord, we are asking His favor on our desire to move
Forward. Together. as a school community and in our individual lives and families. WCS
was built on the cornerstones of faith in Jesus Christ, prayer, and sacrifice for the next
generation. Our hope is that God, in His grace through our prayers, will continue that
vision for generations to come. Please join us and experience God through praying
individually, corporately, and even fasting as a community.
If you attended Forward. Together. A Time of Prayer, Worship and Thanksgiving, you
received a Prayer Calendar (also available to print from the school website). Please join
our WCS family in one voice of prayer each day.
Throughout the pages of this booklet, you will find twenty-one short devotions that
correspond with the Prayer Calendar. The daily devotion will also be emailed each
morning. As you spend time reflecting on the rich perspective, we hope you are encouraged
to a deeper understanding of God’s plan for us. Each entry was lovingly written by
our own Al Iten, a beloved and gifted WCHS teacher. Thank you, Mr. Iten, for sharing your
heart with us.
You are also invited to join in the privilege of praying with other parents in our buildings at
various times throughout the next twenty-one days. Please come and spend a few
moments lifting up our faculty, staff, students and schools. (See the schedule listed on the
back cover.)
Finally, we invite you to join with others in an element of fasting over the next twenty-one
days. Entering into a time of fasting draws our attention to God, and as our hearts and
minds are turned towards Him, we will inevitably know Him more deeply. Consider
using these twenty-one days to limit desserts, TV, unnecessary social media, or whatever
God lays on your heart. I wonder how God might use our refocused time and attention to
change us–and our school– as He meets us in answered prayer?
“Father, may you use all these things for Your honor and for Your glory. In the precious
name of Jesus, Amen.”
Because of Him,
Legacy - Lord, enable us to stand strong on our school’s founding values: faith in
Christ, prayer, and sacrifice for future generations of believers.
Legacy is not lost in a moment of time. It gradually, through an almost imperceptive
unraveling—like the moth at work in the back of the closet—is lost. And once
lost . . . To maintain a righteous legacy we must then, on a daily basis, plead with
the Spirit to open our eyes to our first step away from obedience. Paul encourages
us: “Put on the whole armor of God that you may be able to stand firm . . .” “Take up
the full armor of God . . . having done everything, to stand firm.” “Stand firm,
therefore, having girded your loins with truth . . .” We must have the faith to rely on
His strength, His truth. We must pray for His insight in every decision. We must be
willing to make the sacrifices in the present tense that were the foundation for the
beginning of our legacy. We must remember that the future begins today. And that
our legacy rests solely on our loyal commitment to Him this day.
Administration - Lord, keep our administrators grounded in Your truth, filled with Your
vision and wisdom, and make them bold for Christ, the foundation of WCS.
The strength that undergirds godly leadership is submission. Just as the pillars of
ancient Greece upheld—were placed under, in submission to—the glorious ceilings
of their temples, so we are called to be the pillars that provide the strength needed
by those in authority to be all that God intends for them to be. If you remove the
pillars, what happens to the ceiling? We must hold them up in prayer, build them up
through encouragement, love them through the difficult times of testing. As pillars
we must so impact their lives that what they do—and it is a difficult thing they do,
lead us—enables them to “do this with joy and not with grief, for this would be
unprofitable for you.” Yes, “unprofitable” for us. Pillars that stand alone without
something to support are called “ruins.”
Faculty & Staff - Father, thank you for these servants and help WCS to retain, recruit
and develop excellence in teaching, mentoring and leading students.
“For the Son of Man came not be ministered to, but to minister.”
“Let not many of you become teachers, knowing that as such we shall incur a stricter
judgment.”
That sounds like a good advertisement when hiring teachers, don’t you think. “We
are looking for people who will understand that they are the least important person
in the room while being held to the highest standard of accountability for what they
do before God.” Yes, that’s a calling impossible to achieve without the enabling
power of the Spirit. Teachers need prayer—lots of prayer. And yet, what a joy it is to
be His voice, His love, His grace in the hearts and minds of the church’s future—to
be Christ in the room. Pray for your children’s teachers (even the ones they don’t
have yet) that every child—regardless of their age and their needs--who enters their
rooms will be safe academically, emotionally, physically, spiritually. Each and every
day.
January 14
Current Students - Lord, help WCS to ensure our students are fully equipped to
spiritually and intellectually engage in the increasingly secular world.
Equipping students is a daunting task—the enemy’s tactics are many and varied.
And he doesn’t just use ideas; he also uses circumstances. What’s a teacher to do?
Where does one begin? With the truth, of course.
“Your Word is a lamp unto my feet”—a guide for the next step.
“Father, sanctify them through your truth; Thy Word is the truth.”—obedience to the
Word is transformational.
“Wield the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.”—the only weapon of
attack.
“Meditate on the Word, day and night; and you will be like a tree planted by the
rivers of water”—it builds steadfastness, fruitfulness into a life.
“All Scripture is God-breathed and profitable . . . that the man of God may be
adequate, equipped for every good work.”
All truth is God’s truth. Every science class is a Bible class. Every history class is
a Bible class. Every English class is a Bible class. The more the Christian student
knows, the more he or she can form relationships and the more they will then be
equipped to give an answer as to the hope that resides within them.
How do we equip students? By immersing them in God’s truth in every class they
take. “Let the Word of God dwell in you richly.”
January 15
Current Families - Lord, would you strengthen marriages, give wisdom in parenting,
provision in finances and health, and enable us to reflect Christ.
To understand the importance of the family, you just need to reflect on our
increasingly secular society’s insistence at redefining it. And, of course, to redefine
something is to completely change it into something else—something entirely
different. Worthington Christian Schools rest on the beauty and strength of the
family as defined by God Himself. Worthington Christian Schools will be no stronger
than the families they serve, who in turn serve the school. And all of the families in
and of themselves form a spiritual family—interconnected and interdependent. We
need a total commitment to each other, an unflinching loyalty to the cause of Christ,
and a total engagement in the solving of those inevitable problems that arise within
the school family and the individual families that make up that body. Our
compassion, our comfort, our energy, and even our resources must be lavished upon
our families in times of need. That will create and confirm the unity that glorifies
Him. No child comes to school and leaves at home the influences of his or her
family. And that should be a wonderfully uplifting thing—that should be our strength.
January 16
Alumni - God, we thank you and ask your favor to continue using the WCS graduates
to advance your kingdom around the world in missions, ministry and the
marketplace.
Every believer is in fulltime Christian service. Every calling that God gives a man or
woman is a sacred calling. We send our alumni out into the world as ambassadors
for Christ in whatever place their God-given gifts and talents are needed. There are
not doctors who happen to be Christians, but Christians who happen to be doctors.
There are not engineers who happen to be Christians, but Christians who happen to
be engineers. There are not scientists who happen to be Christians, but Christians
who happen to be scientists. There are not artists who happen to be Christians, but
Christians who happen to be artists. And on and on it goes.
God needs a witness in every “corner” of our culture. So He gifts His children in
myriad ways, and sends them out to use their gifts and talents for the betterment of
society, yes; but above all, for the outreach of the Kingdom.
January 17
Academic Culture - Lord, help WCS to prepare students to apply a biblical
framework so they can thoughtfully and effectively address important issues.
Christians are called to excellence in all things—all things. No one should
understand the tenets of evolution better than the Christian student. No one should
understand the philosophies and worldviews of the culture in which they live more
fully than the Christian student. No one should understand the economic models
debated in political circles better than the Christian student. And no one should be
better prepared to critique and confront the veracity of all the world’s ideas, claims,
and assumptions better than the student grounded in God’s answers to those ideas,
claims, and assumptions. And no one should be better at responding graciously,
compassionately and lovingly to the arguments the world “throws” his or her way.
“Speaking the truth in love”—the power of a “soft answer”—is the only effective
framework for the pursuit and development of academic excellence in the lives of
students. Other approaches may produce a modicum of success, but as someone
has said, “There is no substitute for excellence, not even success.”
January 18
Spiritual Culture - God, we humbly ask for your Holy Spirit to develop the mind of
Christ and clothe each student with the character of Christ.
A Teacher’s Prayer for His Students
Let this mind--this attitude--be in you which was also in Christ Jesus:
A willingness to pour yourself out for others--empty yourself as a sacrifice for the
needs of those around you. Deny yourself daily. Such a life will fill you and those you
serve with joy.
Be so controlled by the Spirit that you can’t walk by anyone with a need--emotional,
spiritual, even physical without responding. You can’t help yourself. Such a life
edifies--builds up--strengthens--those you help and fortifies your spiritual faith in His
desire--and ability--to use you for His glory.
Be committed to live such a life of obedient service for others no matter what--until
death. Such a life of loving obedience in all things fills you with a sense of His
presence--a sense of His faithful love toward you. “For me to live is Christ--and to
die, gain.”
Such a life of complete surrender to the Spirit lifts up the beauty of the Savior before
the eyes of men. And if He is lifted up . . .?
A Teacher’s Responsibility: to daily model such a life. Christianity, after all, is a
lifestyle.
January 19
Co-Curricular Culture - Father, help WCS to provide quality options for students to
excel outside of the classroom through athletics, music, art and special interest
clubs.
God has given us all things—within the boundaries of His truth—to enjoy. He has
given some of us physical strength, agility, and endurance that we might enjoy and
pursue athletic excellence. He has given some of us voices that can harmonize
beautifully with other voices. He has given some of us the ability to take a musical
instrument and create glorious beauty. He has given some of us the ability to
create beauty with paint and brushes. Some of us can exhibit wondrous beauty and
emotion through the gift of dance. Some of us have been given the gift of immersing
ourselves into someone else’s character and through drama to express laughter and
tears and truth.
None of these gifts is superior to the others. They are all gifts given to us for our
enjoyment—and in many cases, for a lifetime of enjoyment. There has long been
a debate over whether such activities, and the discipline of doing such things well,
produces character or just reveals a person’s character. The reason for the debate
is obvious—these activities do both. That’s why the Spirit encourages us to
remember that in everything we do, we can—and should—do all to the glory of God.
We should in all things make the invisible God visible.
Proven character cannot be fully developed in just the walls of a classroom. We
must also provide opportunities for students to use and enjoy the gifts God has
given them—for His glory. He greatly desires that we do so.
January 20
Security - Father, grant a hedge of protection around each WCS campus and facility
and on every person who steps upon our property.
As a child I often sang a chorus that went something like this, “Safe am I, safe am I,
in the hollow of His hand. No foe can harm me; no fear alarm me, for He keeps both
day and night. Safe am I, safe am I, in the hollow of His hand.” I confess, I still sing
it—well, joyful noise it.
He is our security. We need not fear what man can do to us. Nothing can separate
us from His love. The worst thing man can do to us is send us Home. He is our very
present help in times of trouble. What men mean for evil, He can turn into good—
even for those who do the evil. His sovereign will is always best—and can be
trusted fully.
“More secure is no one ever than the loved ones of the Savior.”
Partner with Parents and Churches - God, enable our relationships to be unified and
encouraging in Christ as we stand strong against the culture.
Christianity—and thus, every Christian ministry—is a group project. No one can do it
alone. And each and every one involved in a ministry is essential to it accomplishing
its purpose. We are one in Christ. That is a source of our strength. Sadly, one of the
devil’s favorite weapons is the stirring up of strife. The root—and “fertilizer”—of strife
is pride. And what is more arrogant and divisive than spiritual pride? God clearly
delineates His principle of relationships. “Let each esteem others better than
themselves.” We are so quick to judge, so quick to criticize, even so quick at times to
wield the sword of the Spirit on others when its primary purpose is to hack away at
my blindness to my faults and shortcomings in the call to Christ-likeness. The sword
of the Spirit is designed to send me to the throne of grace and mercy to find the help
that I need in my transformation.
“United we stand; divided we fall” may be a cliché. That doesn’t mean it isn’t true.
Financial Plan - God, grant WCS discernment for wise stewardship and financial
plans with no operating deficits.
Integrity. Discernment. Both are essential components of financial stewardship.
How honestly and openly we handle the resources God gives us are a tremendous
testimony to the world. And they are watching. Wisdom and patience are required
to wait on God for the promised supply of all our needs. We must be careful never
to confuse our wants with our needs, never substitute our plans for His plans, never
rush ahead or lag behind His leading. Difficult task. Prayers are desperately
needed.
Integrity + Discernment + Heavy Doses of Wisdom and Patience = Godly
Stewardship.
Future Facilities & Transition - Father, may Forward. Together. solve facility issues
and provide a smooth transition to a 2-campus setting.
Buildings. Although the body of Christ is people, not buildings, buildings dedicated
to the advancement of God’s kingdom can be used efficiently and effectively to
minister to God’s people—the living stones called to build God’s church. Rooms
pulsating with the work of discipleship—the church’s overarching purpose for
existence—“Go into all the world and make disciples”—are places where God is
found, where He, as promised, is in the midst. Children—God’s favorites—thrive in
rooms carefully planned to enhance learning—the process of discipleship. And, if
you build them, they will come. And when they come, godly, caring teachers can
build into their young lives—with the Spirit’s enabling power—the fear of God, which
is the
beginning of wisdom. A church erected with such lovingly discipled living stones
cannot help but change the world.
January 24
Spiritual Growth - Father, by the power of the Holy Spirit, grow every person in the
WCS community in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
When you have a student enrollment of over 900, probably the most important thing
to remember is that you then have over 900 different varieties of students. Each
one is different. God has gifted them uniquely, created them precisely as His love
and wisdom moved His heart. They each have a role to play in the furtherance of
His kingdom—a vitally necessary role. And God has sent each one of them to us
to assist Him in the molding of each one’s character into the image of Christ. None
of them are attending Worthington Christian by accident. God doesn’t do random.
Oh, I know, a great deal of “molding” will take place after they leave us, but we are
called to play our part in the image building now. For some, we will be sowers, for
some we will also pour on the water of growth, and in many of their lives, we will
even see the beginning of the harvest of Christ-likeness.
Our challenge then is to treat each one fairly—help them based on their needs.
Fairness is, after all, not treating everyone the same, but treating everyone
according to his or her needs. And we must accept them where they are—where
God has them now on their spiritual journey. To do otherwise, too often, creates a
stumbling block to their path toward maturity. We must not get in God’s way. And,
essentially, we must love them. Show them that they are loved and worthy to be
loved for they are His creation designed for His purpose. If we do those things, we
will be facilitators of growth—both now and for a lifetime.
be so, we will do such and such.” Plans saturated in such a humble mindset–as
these plans were for the expansion and growth of Worthington Christian’s
outreach--are God-honoring, God-trusting plans. They are not presumptuous but
resting in the prayer, “Thy will be done.” To make plans without that prayer would
indeed be presumptuous. To see a need and an opportunity for expanding the
outreach and impact of the kingdom and then, to not make plans trusting in His will,
that would be faithlessness.
“And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for He who comes to Him must
believe that He is, and that He is the rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”
As we diligently, by faith, seek His will, we move forward together.
Future Enrollment - Lord, we ask that you grow WCS to a 1,200 student capacity so
all who desire a Christ-centered education can come.
Three hundred more students! Three hundred more changed lives! Three hundred
more well-trained disciples! Three hundred more lights to shine in the darkness!
Three hundred more ambassadors for Christ’s kingdom! Three hundred more! Year
after year after year after year . . . until He comes. Children. Grandchildren.
Great-grandchildren. Great-great-grandchildren. Three hundred more, year after
year after year.
Think about it! Contemplate the impact for Christ!
Whew. Gives me . . . are there such things as spiritual “goose bumps”?
Future Revenues - God, be our Provision for increased teacher compensation,
professional development and expanded course offerings.
Paul in Galatians speaks of “reaping and sowing,” and he’s speaking in the context
of giving. In addition, He tells Timothy in one of his letters that those who teach
in the body are worthy of “double honor.” Again, he’s talking about giving—about
money. New facilities that open the door of opportunity for more students to attend
Worthington Christian also afford us a way to—long term—increase, deepen, the
honor due those who serve Him by teaching His children.
Those called to teach here are not seeking such honor. Look up the number of
years so many have spent dedicating their lives to the furtherance of this ministry of
discipleship. They have willingly chosen to honor God with lives of committed
sacrifice.
Hm. Maybe that’s another reason helping such disciples is called “double honor”?
It certainly honors Him.
Future Classrooms - Father, for your glory, develop gifts in our students through our
science labs, music spaces, art suites, athletic fields, and classroom technology.
Excellence in education—Worthington Christian Schools’ commitment—requires
“hands on,” experiential growth. Just as Christian maturity is measured by how
much of our head knowledge—our theology—becomes true for us experientially, so
“hands on” experiential learning opportunities take head knowledge and make it
“real”—understandable, undeniable in the classroom. Science labs, language labs,
dedicated music and art rooms and studio spaces, athletic fields, access to
technology and its uses for communication can take the theoretical into the
transformational. Can excellence be made more excellent? Without a doubt.
Community Impact - God, enable the light of Christ to shine brightly through WCS to
make a difference locally for your kingdom.
The Worthington Christian community is diverse and far reaching. We can—and
do—touch the lives of people in every neighborhood and in every church from which
we draw students. We can—and do—touch the lives of many ministries throughout
the Columbus area through our students’ outreach activities. We can—and do—
touch the lives of people throughout the state through the recognized achievements
of our students. To enrich the local communities in which we live—and beyond—is
an exciting opportunity. Whether we shine as a city on a hill, a streetlight on a
corner, or even a nightlight in a closet, the light shines. And the darker the culture
becomes the greater becomes the attractiveness of the light.
“Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify
your Father who is in Heaven.”
Worthington Christian Schools specialize in lamp lighting—and in training lamp
lighters.
January 30
Generous Hearts - God, please stir your WCS family to prayerfully and generously
give to the Forward. Together. campaign.
Generosity is a revealer of a man or woman’s heart—and it’s reciprocal. Those
whose hearts are filled with gratitude toward the generosity others have shown
them—in whatever form it’s given—cannot help but give generously in return or
generously “pass it on” to others. Such is the opportunity presented here in
Forward. Together. Generosity can be cheerfully displayed for those who have
given generously of themselves for others. It can even be “forwarded” to those in
the future that you will never know but who will be impacted by your generosity.
And those who give cheerfully to the furtherance of the kingdom are invariably given
by God—generously—a joy-filled heart.
Talk about riches!
January 31
WCS Community - Lord, would you give us your love, strength, perseverance, and
grace to trust You as we journey Forward. Together. as a body.
“Make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love,
united in spirit, intent on one purpose.” And what is that purpose? To fill the earth
with the knowledge and glory of the Lord “as the waters cover the sea”—to lift up
Christ the Savior so that He can draw men to Himself. And what are the blessings
lavished on a community of believers so focused, so intent, so united, on achieving
that purpose? They are an encouragement in Christ, the tender-persuasion of
mutual love, the fellowship, partnership, participation in, the power of the Holy Spirit,
and a yearning for the opportunity to meet the needs of others and a heart of
compassion to act on those yearnings to make them a reality. All of which are
evidence to a watching world that it is “God who is at work in you, both to will and to
work for His good pleasure.”
Amen. Let it be so.
