After a solid rookie campaign in 2011 with
the Vees that included playoff upsets of
the higher seeded Wellington Dukes and
Trenton Golden Hawks, Duchesne improved
during his sophomore season increasing his
regular season point total and becoming a
dependable top-four blueliner for the Ontario
Junior Hockey League squad. Despite the
incremental success, the youngster was
not able to crack the Steelheads lineup so
he opted for trying his hand at the USHL–a
feeder league for NCAA hockey and the top
junior loop south of the border. Once again,
Duchesne showed improvement posting a
solid plus/minus rating of +7 and tying for the
team lead for points by a defenseman. With
Northeastern University in Boston showing
interest, Duchesne’s OHL rights were traded
from Mississauga to his hometown Kingston
Frontenacs in August of 2014. After a heart
to heart with his parents, he decided to forgo
his NCAA eligibility, in return for a chance to
live at home and see how he measured up
in the best junior hockey league in the world.
He made the Frontenacs out of training
camp in 2014 and has been a valuable
member of their blueline ever since.
In 2012, one year after Duchesne was
chosen late in the OHL Priority draft, Ryan
Verbeek was a third round pick of the
Windsor Spitfires. He started with the team
as a rookie and made solid contributions
as an energy guy who wasn’t afraid to mix
it up in the corners, much like his uncle
Pat Verbeek who fulfilled a similar role in
the NHL and earned himself the moniker
“Little Ball of Hate” with the Devils, Whalers,
Rangers, Red Wings and Stars.
Just prior to arriving at training camp in
2013, the young Verbeek suffered an injury
that turned out to be a bulging disc in his
back. He missed 11 games and his season
debut was delayed until late October. By
December of 2013, Verbeek was unhappy
with his situation and with his playing time.
His agent asked for a trade. Four days later,
