vivabrighton Issue 36. Feb 2016 editorial ................................................................................... For over 250 years Brighton has been seen as something of a playground for visitors. For that we can blame, perhaps, Dr Richard Russell, who in the 1750s popularised the notion that seawater was good for you, with the result that High Society London came flocking to the coast. The first set of DFLs*, it seems, were wearing paramour wigs and gold pince-nez. It would be interesting to know what the indigenous population – mainly hard-working, illiterate fishing folk – made of the whole thing. A lot has changed since then, but I guess when, on a sunny Saturday, I see streams of unfamiliar-looking people sauntering down Queens Road, or ambling in the cycle lane near the pier, I’ll be feeling a similar sentiment. “You’re welcome to spend your money here, you strange-looking things… but please don’t leave any rubbish on the beach. And try not to get in the way too much.” Does that sound churlish? Am I being ungrateful? There’s an estimated annual tourist spend of about £408 million in the city, after all. And without tourists, Brighton’s leisure time infrastructure – the restaurants, the venues, the festivals – wouldn’t be nearly as sophisticated. How much better a cultural life do Brightonians have, I wonder, as a result of the fact that the city is such a big tourist destination? Food for thought, I guess, especially as this month’s theme is ‘Brighton at Play’.
