Tony Law Misunderstandings with myself This thing you do – read a lot, and let it percolate in your brain, and then let it come out on stage – thinking about historical job descriptions, it’s like a mixture of philosopher and court jester, isn’t it? Yeah, that’s perfect. This is what I love about doing interviews, that’ll be something I say to the next person. Today, I don’t know what will come of it, but I spent about two hours looking at films of 1950s train rides in New York. It’s really fascinating. You can’t really say ‘yes I’ve decided I’m going to write about 1950s American subway journeys’, but I’m guessing that will come out in something I don’t expect. Being really into history, does it ever happen that you want to talk about some period of history on stage, but can’t because you’d have to spend too long explaining the background details? Yeah, I used to think about stuff like that. Now I just think, ‘I’ll find a way’. I sometimes think, ‘well that’s probably the funny angle, to talk about it without anyone caring or knowing about it - that might be the joke there’. So yeah, all the time. Like I was thinking about Romania the other day. I want to do something about Romania. You know how they sound Slavic but it’s a Romance language. That was enough for me, there’s going to be a fun thing to do about teaching people how to mock, or how to do a Romanian accent, when speaking English. You could say Italian words in a Slavic accent. Something like that. There must be a lot of ideas like that that are buzzing round your head, waiting for you to think of some way to make it work as a routine? Yeah, exactly, but I won’t try and force it, because then nothing will come. I’ll just write it down and leave it. Then I’ll go back to it; my handwriting’s so appalling I won’t know what I meant. Then I’ll think the words meant something else, and something will come out of that. That happens quite a bit, where I’ve gone over some notes and I can’t understand what I’ve actually written, but I’ve taken a different word from it, and then I’ve ended up doing the routine completely… like it’ll dawn on me later on, ‘oh no, I didn’t mean that at all’. I had a thing I’d written down: ‘Magic dolphin’. I realised after I’d been doing it on stage 30 times - I’d tried to make a story about a magic dolphin, but really what I’d meant in the note was, is it still magic if I made a dolphin disappear, but it took a month? These misunderstandings with myself happen all the time. So hopefully I can get two bits out of each thing I write down from now on. SR Frillemorphesis, Feb 10, The Old Market, 8pm ....45....
