interview .......................................... mybrighton: Joss Peach Pianist, composer, producer Are you local? I’ve lived here 16 years. I was brought up in Kent. My father was a music therapist, and I grew up listening to boogie-woogie, skiffle and jazz. I’ve had various jolly adventures - travelling in India, starting a music course in Leeds, working as resident pianist on a cruise ship sailing the Alaskan coast, living and gigging in gorgeous Granada. Then I came to Brighton for love - that didn’t last, but my love of the city has; it’s home. What do you like about it? Its magnificent quirkiness, its closeness to nature, its fantastic festival and multitude of creative opportunities. I’m involved in the active Buddhist community here. Where do you live? I live with my splendid wife Josie and my marvellous daughter Poppy in Manor Farm (below the race course). Though we’re actually moving to East Chiltington in February… What!? We wouldn’t move too far from Brighton! We want to get closer to nature, and have a nearby secondary school. It’s only half an hour away on a good day, which is great because I do a lot of studio work here; I’m thrilled to be co-writing the music with the utterly brilliant Ellie Wyatt for a major new CBeebies animation series. I also compose new scores for live performance with old silent films (next local date is 13th May in the Fringe) and perform in modern jazz ensembles at places like the Verdict - my trio plays there on 23rd Feb. And of course I do my Rowlf busking act! Tell us about Rowlf. That costume has existed for years – it’s a very long story involving a Miss Piggy flying machine, a ramp into the Serpentine, and a great old friend of mine from Kent… Anyway, two years ago he was helping me fit big wheels on my piano after I’d decided to start doing a bit of busking in Brighton. He runs an amazing local prop shop called Plunge Productions. He suggested I wore the old Rowlf suit when I was playing, and it was an overnight success! Rowlf’s been in the Argus, the Brighton Calendar, and the BN1 board game. It must get hot in there. Absolutely roasting, especially in summer. But it’s well worth it. I can see through the mouth so I can people-watch whilst playing, and it’s wonderful seeing all the expressions. People often say ‘You’ve really brightened up my day!’ or ‘that’s why I love Brighton’. I’ve been offered sex, dog biscuits and even old trousers while playing (among other things) - all of which I’ve resisted! I regularly perform as Rowlf at weddings, it really warms the guests up and gets them smiling. What do you do for a night out? I do like to go Freeform Dancing at St Nick’s on a Wednesday night. You can dance how you want, as if no-one’s looking. It’s very liberating. What are your favourite places to eat and drink? Fatto a Mano for great value pizza and atmosphere, Terre à Terre is good for a treat, and Chilli Pickle do a great Monday lunch Thali deal. My darling wife is such an amazing cook, the food is always superb at home – we get a veggie box from Barcombe Nurseries and she’s always experimenting to get through all the different veg. Pubs-wise, I’m a big fan of The Dorset. They’re always friendly and give me free drinks when I busk there, because I attract so many punters. The roast at The Geese is a winner, and I like The Black Dove for their spectacular beers. Mind you, I’m happiest with a good pint of Harvey’s Best after a country walk. Or two.
