A Hidden Gem in the Heart of Thornton Village by Rajal Karavdra Photography by Neil Bird Many simply walk past the prominent red railings on Kipping Lane unware that it is a Residential Care Home to 16 elderly people and in June will actually be celebrating its 30th anniversary. From the outside it is rather deceptive but stepping inside gives way to a quaint, homely environment with the waft of baking from the kitchen and the sound of joy and laughter. It is far from the image I had in mind of a care home and certainly not one portrayed by the media. The beautiful, mature and enclosed garden viewed from an open conservatory is like entering a secret garden, who would have known of such possibility on Kipping Lane. With only 16 residents Rose Cottage is truly unique as most care homes tend to be on a larger scale and purpose built whereas Rose Cottage once a family home, then a doctor’s surgery has been lovingly adapted and is a family business. To add to the charm, the staff are all local - many who have worked at the home in excess of 15/20 years (this is unheard of in an industry of high turnover). Old house name engraving found on bricked up access to Rose Cottage on Fountain Street. worked at the home since it opened summed it up… ‘when we come to work we know of one another through connections in the village and the community, the support we give and receive is why we are able to give the excellent care that we provide. It is what forms our loyalty to our fellow folk.’ With an ageing population and many families having to care for their loved ones at home, Rose Cottage offers respite care allowing carers a break and a chance to recuperate. Additionally, it provides day care for working families who want peace of mind whilst at work that their relative is safe but also not isolated. So the next time you walk past the red railings...
