the best of Devon's eateries The Restaurant Inspector Visits: Jack in the Green Exeter Jack in the Green Jack in the Green menu sampled Starters Mushroom Risotto with Truffle Oil & Parmesan Lyme Bay Crab Cake Flaming Creme Brulée Mains Maple Glazed Creedy Carver Duck Breast Roast Breast of Pheasant and Confit leg with Whisky Cream Sauce Pudding Chocolate, Cherry, Kirsch Cheeseboard Drinks House Malbec Tarka Otter Lager Superb food at this Gastro Pub The Jack in the Green is situated just outside Exeter on the eastward end and is a wellestablished eaterie with a solid reputation.Interestingly, the proprietor Paul Parnell, bought the pub in 1992, with limited funds, and was told by many that it was a disaster waiting to happen, particularly as the bypass was pending, meaning the end to the high levels of traffic outside the front. So, here we are, about a quarter of a century later and it has, and continues to be, a great success story. Of course, to be successful year in and year out Pub with a cosy, intimate feel over that duration is more than just good luck, it’s a combination of providing fine food and excellent service which has won out for Paul and the team over the years. Arriving at the ʻJack’, you’re aware it’s a cosy place with a great pub feel. Whilst waiting for table, a pint of the excellent Tarka was taken, a fine beer for slaking your thirst. First course was Lyme Bay Crab Cake and also Mushroom Risotto with Truffle Oil and Parmesan. Both were extremely tasty and thoroughly enjoyed, as was the Maple Glazed Creedy Carver Duck Breast and the Roast Breast of Pheasant and Confit leg with Whisky Cream Sauce - great mains, delicately cooked, the meat being moist and tender. Top marks to the head chef (Matthew Mason) and team! I’m a bit of a sucker for a good pud, and their Choc, Cherry & Kirsch more than satisfied my pud urge - blooming lovely. Their cheeseboard showed no skimming on ingredients, all high quality, tasty cheeses and accompaniments. A thoroughly enjoyable evening I can thoroughly recommend the ʻJack’ heartily to you all! Editor Maple Glazed Creedy Carver Duck Breast Roast Breast of Pheasant and Confit leg with Whisky Cream Sauce Otter Brewery’s Tarka is my favourite lager these days, it’s a clean, refreshing beer that’s thirst quenching and not overly gassy, with a great taste - a real pity more pubs don’t drop the usual mass, corporation produced lagers and replace with this.
