lights go out, someone screams and there's a victim of foul play. It's a fun-filled
evening where everyone has a part to play in solving the whodoneit! Can you
discover the killer before s/he strikes again?
Back to Before Fundraiser Pancake Breakfast
to support BAHS production of Ragtime
- By: Jennifer Newland and Sue Bina
On Saturday, February 20th from 8am to 11am, the Bangor High School
Drama Department will be hosting the third annual pancake breakfast with the
cast of “Ragtime: School Edition.” Come have a family friendly breakfast with
us! Ragtime may have a serious undertone during the production on stage,
however, the breakfast will be kid friendly with lots of fun!
Ragtime is a powerful portrait of life in turn-of-the-century America, but a
relevant tale for today. Written by the award-winning composer/lyricist team of
Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens (Once On This Island, Seussical, Lucky Stiff),
noted playwright Terrence McNally, (Kiss of the Spider Woman, Master Class),
and based on E.L. Doctorow’s distinguished novel, the musical intertwines
the stories of three extraordinary families, as they confront history’s timeless
contradictions of wealth and poverty, freedom and prejudice, hope and despair,
and what it means to live in America.
Ragtime deals with serious issues, but we promise to make the pancake
breakfast a fun, family oriented event. Patrons can expect the five-star service
from the cast. There will be photo booth opportunities, games and activities for
children of all ages, and musical performances by the cast of Ragtime.
The breakfast will raise funds for the high school musical production of
Ragtime. Performance dates are: March 4, 5 & 6, 2016. Tickets for the musical
will be available for purchase at the pancake breakfast or you can call 610-599-
7011 x1001 for further information regarding tickets for the musical.
Tickets for the “Back to Before” pancake breakfast can be purchased ahead
of time by calling Sue Bina at 610-588-3041. Hope to see you come join in the
fun we will have at the breakfast with the cast of Ragtime! You can also follow
the event on Facebook at www.facebook.com/events/986480771425830/.
SLATE BELT SISTERS
DANCE AT IRISH WORLD
CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Gallagher School of Irish Dancing counts
some world-class talent among its ranks.
Two sisters who reside in Upper Mt. Bethel
Township, Therese McCoy, age 15, and
Annemarie McCoy, age 13, will be heading to
Glasgow, Scotland for the Irish Dancing World
Championships held from March 20 - 27.
Therese & Annemarie, both graduates of
Immaculate Conception School in Pen Argyl,
have been Irish dancing for 7 years. They dance
at the Gallagher School of Irish Dance in East
Stroudsburg under the instruction of Fedelmia
Gallagher and Conleth Mullan.
Therese qualified to dance at Worlds after
placing 5th at the National Championships in Rhode Island in July. Annemarie
qualified for Worlds after placing 7th at the Regional Competition in Philadelphia
in November. Both girls practice 6 days/week to maintain their stamina in order
to prepare for this demanding international Irish dance contest that combines
athleticism and artistry.
Each sister will be competing in their respective age group and in each of
those contests there will be about 200 dancers from around the world. For the
competition, the dancers must dance one light shoe and one hard shoe dance.
The top 50 in each age group will go on to the finals.
“It’s like our Olympics,” said Fedelmia Gallagher, Gallagher School owner and
teacher.
It takes a lot of dedication, self-motivation and sacrifice to reach this elite
level of dancing. It is a dream that both girls have been working very hard to
achieve. Therese attended the World Championships last March in Montreal
and this is Annemarie's first time qualifying.
Mrs. Gallagher agreed that it takes a special commitment to reach World
Qualifying skill level.
Competitions like the World Championships illustrate how far in popularity
Irish dancing has come in the last couple of decades. It’s exciting to watch
the dancing. It’s upbeat and a lot of fun. The girls are preserving Irish culture
through music and dance.
“It’s not just dancing anymore,” said Mrs. Gallagher, a native of Northern
Ireland. “It’s really become a sport, which is great. The friendships these girls
form, it’s with girls from all over the world. It’s a lovely activity for children.”
The Gallagher School of Irish dance is currently in the process of raising money
to be able to send Therese and Annemarie, along with their teachers, to this
prestigious event.
Anyone wishing to support our local talent or for further information about
Irish dance classes, please contact Fedelmia Gallagher at 570-977-4035 or
Give the Gift of Life this Valentine’s Day by
Registering to be an Organ Donor
by Candy Martin
February 14th is Valentine’s Day, the day to
celebrate love with chocolates and flowers. It is
also National Organ Donor Day, a day to celebrate
the gift of life. Those who have received a gift
from an organ donor celebrate this day with great
emotion.
Lisa Rigione and her family became involved
with the “Gift of Life Organ Donor Program” one
year ago. Lisa’s son, Mike Debiase was an organ
donor, giving the gift of life, on National Organ
Donor Day, February 14, 2015. His organs were
donated and saved the lives of six individuals.
Saving their families from suffering the heartache
and grief that Lisa and her family have been
dealing with since losing her 23 year old son
unexpectedly.
This is Mike’s story and his mother Lisa wants
Mike with his son Benny.
to share it in hopes of bringing awareness to the importance of organ donation.
Lisa, who was in the hospital, received a call from her husband John checking
on her and had mentioned that Mike, who had been sleeping on the couch,
was snoring unusually loud. Lisa casually said to wake him. John tried but
Mike didn’t wake up, he didn’t even move. John, being a paramedic, knew
immediately something was wrong and called an ambulance. Mike was rushed
to St Luke’s Anderson campus. Lisa met her husband and son when they arrived
at the hospital.
After a cat scan and extensive tests it was determined that Mike had a “brain
bleed” and was transferred to St. Luke’s in Bethlehem. Two days later Mike’s
doctor, informed Lisa and John that there was no sign of brain activity. Faced
with the grim news and making difficult decisions Lisa and John had asked
about organ donation and were informed that Mike was an organ donor. Lisa
recalled Mike saying that he checked the box to be an organ donor when he got
his driver’s license. Mike wanted his organs to be donated and Lisa and John
wanted to honor his wishes.
Mike Debiase passed away on February 12th, 2015. One week before his 24th
birthday.
The Gift of Life Program representative immediately stepped in once the
decision was made and was with Mike and his family from that moment
forward until the very end. Mike’s heart, liver, lungs, and kidneys were donated
to six individuals to give them the gift of life.
Mike, was Lisa’s oldest son. She called him “Sunshine” they shared a special
bond and had a connection with the sun and sunflowers. Mike was genuine,
he had a big heart, and he loved his family. His son Benny, his wife Sara, his
mother Lisa, little brother Connor, his step dad John and his friends were the
most important people in Mike’s life.
Mike attended FIT, Fashion Institute of Technology
in New York City for Jewelry Design. When his
grandmother passed away Mike had told his mom
that he wanted to be cremated and his ashes made
into a diamond.
Lisa, is currently in the process of having a ring
made in honor of her son’s memory by Infinity
Diamond. The process is quite unique and is made especially for you from your
loved one.
Lisa’s ring will be yellow and amber in color. Some of Mike’s family and friends
are also having diamonds made. For information on Infinity Diamond visit their
website http://www.infinitydiamond.com/.
Since Mike’s passing Lisa has become involved with the Gift of Life Donor
Program. Volunteering her time and getting involved to help bring awareness to
organ donation.
Recipients are told very little about the donors, although most are extremely
curious to know more about the amazing person who chose to save their live.
The donor program encourages
but does not require the donor’s
family to write to the transplant
recipient. Lisa has learned
through the Gift of Life Donor
Program that a man in his
thirties received Mike’s heart, a
man in his forties received his
February 11, 2016
liver, the recipient of Mike’s right kidney is a man in his forties and his left
kidney is a man in his fifties. The recipient of his right lung is a man in his
seventies, and his left lung recipient is a man in his sixties.
Lisa said” It's never too late to turn your life around & become a “Hero" Mike
is my Hero, My son, my Sunshine. He choose to become an organ donor, now
he lives on in 6 others, there is no greater gift . Everyone can be a hero, Be Like
MIKE.”
Since Mike’s passing at least two dozen family members and friends have
registered to become organ donors.
“I would like to acknowledge and thank all the nurses at St. Luke’s who took
care of Mike as well as the needs of myself and my family, nurses Sheila, Anne,
Erin, Jenn, Karen, Kelly and Dr Lischner and the head of The Gift of Life Team
Timothy Snyder. The kindness and compassion shown to us during the most
difficult time of our lives will never be forgotten.” said Lisa
There are many myths and misconceptions about organ donation. Every
organized religion believes in organ donation. Here are a few facts about organ
and tissue donation.
On average, a single organ and tissue donor can save or enhance the lives of
50+ people.
More than 121,000 people are currently waiting for an organ transplant in
the United States. Almost 2,000 of them are 18 years old or younger. Nearly
6,000 people await transplants in the Gift of Life Donor Program service region (
eastern Pennsylvania, Southern New Jersey and Delaware)
More than 80 organ transplants take place in the United States every day.
More than 30,000 patients began new lives in 2015 thanks to organ
transplants.
More than 47,000 patients had their sight restored last year through cornea
transplants.
An average of 22 patients die every day because there are not enough organs
donated.
Every 10 minutes a person is added to the nation’s organ transplant waiting
list.
More than 1 million tissue transplants are done each year and the need for
tissue has been rising.
The best way to indicate your decision to become a donor is by adding the
organ donor designation to your drivers license or state I.D. card and then tell
your family of your decision.
One Donor Can:
Donate kidneys to free two people from dialysis treatments needed to sustain
life.
Save the lives of patients awaiting heart, liver, lung or pancreas transplants.
Give sight to two people through the donation of corneas.
Donate bone to repair injured joints or to help save a limb
threatened by cancer.
Help burn victims heal more quickly through donation of
skin.
Save eight lives. In 30 seconds.
Become a registered organ and tissue donor today.
This Valentine’s Day think about making the decision to
become an organ donor. Organ donation is a gift of love.
Mike with his buddy,
little brother Connor.
Mike when he was younger with his
mother, Lisa and Step father John Rigione.
3/4 cup of granulated sugar
1 tbsp all-purpose flour
2 (8 oz) packages of cream cheese, at room temperature
1 tsp lemon zest
2 large eggs
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
1/4 cup sour cream
To Garnish: Fresh mint leaves and fresh raspberries
DIRECTIONS:
For the crust: Preheat the oven to 325º F. In a mixing bowl, stir together
the chocolate graham cracker crumbs and sugar with a fork and, then pour in
the melted butter and stir until everything is evenly moistened. Add a heaped
tablespoonful of the crust mix to 15 paper lined muffin cups. Press the crust
For the raspberry swirl: Add the raspberries and 2 Tbsp of the granulated
sugar to a food processor and pulse until they are well pureed, about 30
Mix in the eggs one at a time. Add the vanilla extract and sour cream until
everything is just combined.
Divide the mixture evenly among the muffin cups over the crust layer. You
will add about 1/3 cup to each muffin cups and they will be nearly full. Jiggle
the pan to level the cheesecake filling and then put about 5 small circles of the
raspberry sauce on the top of each mini cheesecake. Using a toothpick, swirl
the raspberry filling into the cheesecake mixture to create a pretty marbled
design. Bake 20-25 minutes.
CHOLESTEROL AND STATINS
By Jackie Talero-Rueda, The Crunchy Mom
February is heart health month and you might be seeing TV shows and
news segments talking about ways to care for your heart. Lowering
M m
cholesterol is probably one of the suggestions. According to WebMD,
the average American has cholesterol levels that are ‘borderline high,’
and 1 in 6 has a high level. When you have more than your body needs,
cholesterol can cause plaque to build up in your arteries. This thick, hard plaque can clog
your arteries like a blocked pipe. Reduced blood flow can lead to a stroke or heart attack.
So yes lowering high cholesterol levels is pretty important but the most important thing
to consider is the ratio of LDL to HDL cholesterol which should be around 2:1. LDL or
Low-density lipoprotein can at times be elevated and not cholesterol. LDL is the carrier
protein of cholesterol but sometimes referred to bad cholesterol. LDL isn’t technically
bad. The problem happens when LDL becomes oxidized or damaged and turns on the
immune system, inflammation happens, and it narrows the arteries. We can keep LDL
from oxidizing by eating good fats and cutting back on carbohydrates. When people have
high cholesterol they immediately stop eating fatty foods or foods with high cholesterol
like eggs. Fatty foods don’t normally cause your cholesterol to rise, elevated insulin levels
or a decrease in your insulin receptor sensitivity cause this to happen. Most Americans
with high cholesterol levels get a prescription for a statin drug. Statins are HMG-CoA
reductase inhibitors. So they act by blocking the enzyme in your liver that is responsible for
making cholesterol. Statin drugs can cause adverse effects like muscle problems, tendon
problems, memory loss, cognitive problems, and an increase in insulin resistance. There is
evidence that taking statins may even increase your risk for Lou Gehrig's disease, diabetes,
and even cancer. There are hundreds of studies proving their adverse effects. Statin drugs
have been associated with 71% increase in becoming diabetic because of their effect
on insulin resistance. Increased insulin resistance contributes to chronic inflammation in
your body, and inflammation is the hallmark of most diseases. In fact, increased insulin
resistance can lead to heart disease, which, ironically, is the primary reason for taking a
cholesterol-reducing drug in the first place! (mercola.com). Statins also increase your
diabetes risk by raising your blood sugar. If you do take statins be sure to supplement
CoQ10 (200-300 mg daily) since statins deplete CoQ10 in your body. As your body gets
more and more depleted of CoQ10, you may suffer from fatigue, muscle weakness and
soreness, and eventually heart failure. The best form of CoQ10 to take is ubiquinol since
its the bioavailable form of CoQ10. Many people over age 40 cannot convert CoQ10 into
the active or bioavailable form, ubiquinol. It is important to know
the risks involved in taking statins to lower cholesterol. There
are ways it can be lowered naturally. Aerobic exercise, diet high
in good fats and low in carbs. Taking a quality fish oil (1000-
2000 mg daily) or Krill oil (500 mg daily) and Niacin/vitamin B3
(1,500 mg daily) can help lower cholesterol and maintain healthy
levels. Garlic and onions also help reduce cholesterol. You can
also take a garlic supplement (500 mg daily). Don’t forget stress
also increases cholesterol so living a stress free life is also very
important.
February is National Children's Dental Health Month.
Since the opening of the dental practice. 27 years ago, Dr. Gary Williams DMD-
Family Dental Care, in Pen
to educating children
about dental health care.
Every February they invite
groups of children to the
dental office to teach them
about healthy dental care.
Free Yourself from the Flu
Preventive steps to protect your home and business
(Family Features) With flu season approaching, parents may be
bracing for an outbreak at their children's schools, but adults are
also highly susceptible at work and in other public places. Now is
the time for families and businesses to take steps to prevent and
protect against the flu.
With workers missing as much as a week after falling ill with
the flu, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
attributes as much as $7 billion in losses for U.S. businesses
each year as a result of workers' sick days and lost productivity.
Combine that with lost wages, missed school and sporting events, and the overall hit to
your personal health, and the toll is higher yet.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates between 3,000 and 49,000
deaths and more than 200,000 hospitalizations each year depending upon the severity
of the flu season. People at high risk for developing flu-related complications include
children under 5, adults 65 or older, pregnant women, residents of nursing homes and
other long-term care centers, and people who have medical conditions such as asthma,
chronic lung disease, heart disease and blood disorders.
"Influenza is a serious viral infection, and the toll on public health each year related
to influenza is significant," said Dr. John Hanlin, vice president of public health and food
safety at Ecolab. "Fortunately, there are a number of important measures that you, your
family and your business colleagues can take to reduce the risk of influenza."
Getting a flu vaccine and taking anti-viral medications as prescribed if you do contract
the flu are two ways the CDC advocates stopping the spread of flu germs. Another vital
factor in protecting yourself from the flu is preventing its spread.
The flu is a respiratory infection accompanied by fever and often respiratory
complications that is transmitted from person to person, either through personal contact,
or through contact with a contaminated surface. Individuals who have contracted the
virus are contagious at least one day prior to displaying symptoms, and up to seven days
after they first appear.
In addition, the flu virus can survive up to 48 hours on stainless steel and plastic
surfaces, and up to 12 hours on cloth, paper and tissues. Properly cleaning and
disinfecting can minimize the chances of individuals contracting the virus from a
contaminated surface.
Prevent contamination
To properly clean, disinfet and protect your environment, know that you should:
* Clean any visible soil from surfaces before disinfecting. When cleaning and disinfecting,
work from top to bottom and from cleaner to more heavily soiled surfaces.
* Thoroughly wet the surface with a U.S. EPA registered disinfectant and follow label
instructions. Choose disinfectants effective against the flu virus, such as Ecolab's line of
disinfectant products, which are available for institutional and industrial use.
* Disinfect frequently touched hard surfaces often, including tables, chairs, light switches,
door handles and restroom facilities.
* Give special attention to frequently touched surfaces in food preparation areas, as well
as the restroom, including light and air control switches, faucets, toilet flush levers, door
What is LOVE?
by Lisa Villano
#BeautyComesFromWithin
"Love, the Caressing of My Heart, the Warmth of a Summer Breeze, the
Embrace of the One I Love…."
We Can Describe Love in So Many Ways, Yet and Still, Can We Truly Place a
Finger on What Makes it So Grand?
Love is Discrete, Yet Immensely Powerful. It’s The Thumping of Our Hearts
from Our First Kiss, The Beauty that Cascades from a Baby’s Face, the Bond
Between a Mother and Child.
Love is Vast, It’s Free, It's True…. It Gives Life Purpose, and Your Desires
Meaning. It’s The Moment of Conception, the Freeness Felt when You are
Honest with Yourself, a Thriving Force... Gently Guiding You; it’s Found in “I
Dos”.
Love is also patient, It is kind. It does not Envy, it does not Boast, it is not
Proud. It does not Dishonor others, Nor is it Self-Seeking. It is Not easily
Angered, it Does Not keep Records of Wrongs…. and Love does not Delight in
evil but Rejoices with the Truth. Love Always Protects, Always Trusts, Always
Hopes, and Always Perseveres.
It Lives Within Us, It Draws Us Near, and Keeps Us Safe in its Embrace.
knobs and handrails.
* Avoid touching public items that sustain heavy use, such as elevator buttons and push
plates on doors, with your hands.
Proper hand hygiene
Hand-washing is also essential to preventing an influenza contamination. Proper handwashing
helps remove most bacteria, viruses and other pathogens, so they can't be
spread to others. The CDC recommends these steps:
* Wet hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap and apply soap.
* Rub hands together to lather the soap. Clean the backs of hands, between fingers and
under nails.
* Scrub for at least 20 seconds.
* Rinse well under clean, running water.
* Dry with a clean towel or air dry.
* Before using hand sanitizer, remove any dirt from hands with soap and water. Apply
product to palm and rub hands together until it disappears (15-20 seconds).
Education is the first step in promoting effective hand hygiene. But the real challenge is
motivating others to wash frequently and follow protocols day in and day out.
* Use soaps that are gentle on hands. Formulations that irritate skin may dissuade even
the most dedicated hand-washer.
* Be a role model and wash your hands following the same high standard you set for your
family and coworkers.
FURRY FRIENDS
Season of Love Courtesy of Leck Veterinary Hospital
Winter is in full swing, so it’s always nice to warm things up with tokens of love
and appreciation when Valentine’s Day comes around. The traditional chocolate
and flowers are my favorite! But it’s also a good time for a reminder to put those
goodies safely out of reach of both dogs and cats.
The fat and sugar in chocolate can cause an upset stomach and this is what
happens in most chocolate ingestion cases. However, chocolate can also be
directly toxic because of a compound called theobromine. The more chocolate
liquor there is in a product, the more theobromine there is. This makes baking
chocolate the worst for pets, followed by semi-sweet and dark chocolate, then
milk chocolate and chocolate flavored cakes and cookies. Signs of theobromine
intoxication are vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity, tremors, seizures, racing heart,
rhythm progressing to abnormal rhythms, and death in severe cases.
If the chocolate was eaten recently, it may be possible to induce vomiting;
otherwise, hospitalization and support are needed until the chocolate has worked
it’s way out of the system. A call to the Pet Poison Helpline, ASPCA Poison
Control, or to your veterinarian can help calculate the risk, and go over the
treatment options should you discover an empty box of chocolates at Fido’s feet.
One of the most significant dangers to our feline friends comes in the form of
true lily. Plant species from the Lilium (Easter Lily) and the Hemerocallis (Daylily)
families will cause kidney failure and death in cats if ANY part of the plant is
eaten. If a cat eats the equivalent of less than one leaf, it can become severely
ill. They may vomit initially, then appear to be okay, but if treatment is delayed
more than 18 hours, their kidneys will fail and they may die. Do not mess around
with cats and lilies; make sure if you have these plants anywhere in or around
your premises, your cat cannot access them. Should you suspect your cat has
snacked on one, a visit to your veterinarian for blood monitoring and supportive
care, is in order.
As little as 6 ounces of milk chocolate is enough to cause a moderate to severe
reaction in a twenty pound dog. So remember, to share the love, but hide the
chocolate and flowers!
Happy Valentine’s Day!
Leap Year Special
I urge any single men to read this message to ensure
the protection of their bachelorhood during a time when
such noble status might be under attack!
Ladies, if you want to add to your current wardrobe,
hunt down a commitment-phobic male and cash in on
the Leap Year commiseration prizes!
(Writers note: Most of the legends mentioned herein originated in times when
cultural rules regarding equality for women were different to our times. No
offense is intended to anyone in the presentation of this article.)
Monday, February 29th, 2016 is a rare day. The year in which such a day falls
is known as a Leap Year and happens every four years with a few exceptions.
(To determine if your year is a leap year, calculate if the number of your year
will evenly divide by four. If it does divide by four, it might be a Leap Year.) The
traditions around the added Leap Year Day, February 29th, are a lot of fun and I
wanted to present them to the readers of The Belt of The Belt and Beyond.
History attributes the additional day on a Leap Year to Roman Emperor Julius
Caesar, who wanted to keep the months approximately coinciding with the
seasons. Apparently, the calendar was such a mess before the introduction of
Leap Year Day that in the year directly before the first Leap Year three months
were added to account for the confusion in the calendar at that time. Imagine
2016 having three extra months! The addition of one day isn't a perfect fix to a
broken calendar, but it does go a long way to keeping months and seasons in
alignment.
Now that the need for a Leap Year has been presented, we get to what I
consider to be the fun stuff!
The well known tradition around February 29th is that ladies are allowed,
even encouraged, to propose to their men. In 1288, an unwed Scottish Queen
Margaret enacted a law allowing women to propose on February 29th with the
caveat that women intending to propose had to wear a red petticoat to warn
her love of her intentions. Another legend tells of St. Brigid of Kildare, Ireland,
petitioning St. Patrick (the patron saint of Ireland) to allow women the right to
propose marriage. St. Brigid had been receiving complaints from women that
their men were too socially inept or too scared to propose to them and that the
women felt that time was ticking by. Immediately upon St. Patrick agreeing to
allow women to propose on a Leap Year day, St. Brigid went down on one knee
and proposed to St. Patrick! The Saint kissed Brigid on the cheek and refused
her proposal, giving Brigid a silk gown to ease the pain of the refusal. There
might be multiple possible origins of the tradition, but all stories stress the
dedication of the day to female marriage proposals.
In parts of Europe, there is a tradition amongst people of noble birth that a
man refusing a Leap Year proposal must give the lady twelve pairs of gloves so
that she can cover up her lack of an engagement ring and any embarrassment
that a refusal might bring.
Getting married in a Leap Year is either good or bad luck depending on your
nation of origin; for example, if you are from Finland a Leap Year wedding is
good luck, if you are from Greece a Leap Year wedding is bad luck.
I finish with a list of the expectations of single men on Monday, February 29th,
2016 regarding possible marriage proposals and the possible beginnings of a
Leap Year joke:
A lady intending to propose to her man must wear a red petticoat so that
the man has a chance to run off before she can propose. So, look out for red
petticoats on the day men folk!
If you are intending to refuse a proposal, you might offer the reason as bad
luck if you are from the right country. Beware, the lady might offer the reason
of good luck if you are from another place. Men, have either silk gowns, skirts,
twelve pairs of gloves, or all of the afore mentioned ready as to not offer such
gifts would be the height of boorishness!
The following sight might not be so far-fetched:
A Scotsman (a man from Scotland), a European Toff (a person of noble
heritage, a man in this case), and an Irishman (a man from Ireland) hurry into a
bar. Each man places a sack full of bundled pairs of gloves and paper wrapped
silk skirts on the bar, orders a large glass of something strong and moves to
huddle in a dark corner...
Good hunting ladies!
Lee O'Donovan
P.S. As a happily married man, I would urge all you nervous men folk to consider
the lovely mysterious creature before you and all the fun that marriage can
bring you!
RAGTIME SPOTLIGHT
In this week's Ragtime Spotlight, we get to know BAHS's
Pit Orchestra Director, Mr. Eric Hahn.
(SW) How long have you been conducting?
(EH) I began my teaching/conducting career in 2010 at Bald
Eagle Area High School. I have been working in Bangor for
six years. However, according to my family and friends, I
have been conducting since I was old enough to stand. I
have heard stories and seen photos of myself at West Park
Mr. Eric Hahn
in Allentown conducting along with the Allentown Band from the audience.
(SW) What do you find to be the most challenging part of putting your
pit orchestra together?
(EH) The most challenging part is always making sure the sound our audience
hears is the best representation of what we can do. We need to make sure our
sound is balanced as it exits the pit, and that it balances with the volume of the
cast. The sound inside the pit is always vastly different from the sound out in
the seats.
(SW) How have your rehearsals been going?
(EH) Rehearsals have been absolutely fantastic since day one. The students
have consistently come prepared and work quickly to make everything sound
great. We have even had the honor of playing along with members of the cast
on two occasions already. Typically this does not happen until much later in the
rehearsal process.
(SW) Which piece of music from Ragtime has been the most
challenging?
(EH) The most challenging piece of music from Ragtime from the conductor's
stand point would be either the sequence from Lawrence, Mass. or the Justice
segment near the end of Act I. There are some odd and changing meters in
these sections. From the point of view of the players, The Gettin' Ready Rag and
Buffalo Nickel Photoplay, Inc. are the most technically challenging. Much of the
difficult piano work has been handled very well by our local expert, Todd Deen.
(SW) Which piece has been your favorite?
(EH) My favorite piece from the show is The Wheels of a Dream.
(SW) Which show has been your favorite to conduct?
(EH) Ragtime!
(SW) What are you most looking forward to in reference to this year's
production of Ragtime?
(EH) This show deals with some of the most prevalent and divisive topics that
plague our society today. The story shows us the evils of social injustice and
racial inequality in a way that makes us look inward to see how our thoughts,
words, and deeds either parallel or diverge from those of the characters on
stage. After seeing this show for the first time more than 15 years ago, I found
myself taking a much harder look at my own philosophies and the way I treated
others, and I hope others will do the same. What I am most looking forward to is
how the students, parents, and community members who work on this show or
see it performed will grow because of having heard the story.
Sonia in My Eyes
I see her shape approaching as if through a misty dream,
Light begins to brighten on the contour she retains.
Ample length of flowing hair to frame a pleasant face,
Curvature of shoulder falling toward the slight of wrist.
Horizontal line of blouse and stitch of skirt on silhouette,
Fascinating to behold yet having vastly more contained.
Wisdom shapes the way she views this complicated world,
It forms a stable shelter for unbendable decisions.
Conscious effort to create environments of challenge,
Items she foregoes to improve the growth of her children.
Integrity of sound defense for friends who are away,
Sincere tears of sadness with acquaintances who grieve.
Appreciation in a card or thank you with a cheerful word,
Knowing when to answer yes or rather fitting to decline.
The sacrifice of Greece for the stark unrest of India,
One simple cup of water for the least of all of these.
Honest words of spoken truth with tenderness of heart,
Silent on her knees to hear that still and quiet whisper.
Abundant love she has within and freely gives away,
Those acts of gentle grace make her altogether lovely.

Tips to Help You
Weather the
Snowy Winter
(Family Features) When snow
is in the forecast, a fully stocked
shed and plan of attack can
help you weather the storm.
Regardless of the predicted
snowfall totals, it’s best to have
the appropriate tools on hand for
your home, your car and yourself.
The driveway
To clear snow from large, flat
areas, a snow blower is the best
tool. The innovative Snow Joe iON Hybrid Snow Blower eliminates the need to
run out for gas during a storm and operates on both battery and corded electric
power, giving you extended clearing time. Begin by using the rechargeable
battery to clear the areas furthest away from your home and utilize the corded
electrical power for extended use as you get closer to your house. Clear a path
as it snows, if possible, to avoid a bigger end job. Once all of the snow has been
removed, cover any slippery patches with salt or sand.
Sidewalks and pathways
Clearing sidewalks and pathways is not only courteous to your neighbors, but
in many areas it’s the law. For lighter snow, putting down ice melt a few hours
before a storm can melt snow up to 2 inches deep and keep ice from forming.
For larger storms, it’s advised to remove smaller amounts of snow several times
instead of waiting until the snow stops falling. This results in less strenuous
activity and also allows the sun to warm up the pavement, preventing ice from
forming.
The car
It’s important to keep your car stocked up for an emergency, just as you would
your home. Fill your trunk with a small survival kit, including a blanket, water,
flashlight and extra batteries. Another important tool to keep in your car in the
winter is an ice scraper. The Snow Joe illum-n-Broom is equipped with an ice
scraper and snow broom to push snow off the car without scratching the paint.
The all-in-one unit also features a flashlight and emergency blinker, so you can
address hazards and drive safely.
Yourself
While removing snow may make you work up a sweat, it’s still important to
dress warmly and keep your body covered, especially parts of the body that are
vulnerable to frostbite, such as your fingers, toes and face. Make sure that you
are equipped with a warm jacket, thick gloves and socks, and a hat that covers
your ears. Dress in layers so that you can take off pieces of clothing as your
body warms up.
