THE YEAR 1908 was particularly auspicious
for University College Dublin. In
the same year, the young university received
its royal charter and the UCD
Faculty of Commerce –asitwas then
known –came into existence.
That was the year UCD students, for the first
time, filed with eager anticipation through the
doors of the brand new Earlsfort Terrace building.
The move from Newman House on St
Stephen’s Green marked abold new direction for
UCD. The college started small, with just 10 students
recorded in the 1912-13 session, when
records began. But, for students on the new commerce
course, the sense of anticipation was coupled
with arecognition of ahistorical journey.
For the first time, the national university was
setting out to educate anew generation of business
leaders. From the outset, UCD captured an
