About the Author<br />

Cole Bunzel is a PhD candidate in the Department of Near Eastern Studies<br />

at Princeton University, where his research focuses on the history of the<br />

Wahhabi movement in Saudi Arabia. An expert on jihadi thought and ideology,<br />

he is the author of From Paper State to Caliphate: The Ideology of the Islamic<br />

State (Brookings Institution, March 2015). He has previously held government<br />

and think tank positions related to Syria and Iraq in Washington, DC,<br />

and has lived in Syria and Saudi Arabia. He holds an MA in international<br />

relations from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies<br />

and an AB in Near Eastern Studies from Princeton University.<br />
