PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Dear SCI Drayton Valley Chapter Members,
“Team Work”; it’s a term that is used a lot in our society.
You as a SCI member are part of a large team of people
worldwide who support SCI by joining and sponsoring
this organization. You do this as a whole to protect your
freedom to hunt. Our team is under serious attack by
the media, social media and those other teams who wish
to take away and change a part of your life and your
childrens’ lives. They wish to stop trophy hunting on all
levels. We have all seen the out cry about the death of
one lion in Africa. As I write this I’m sure all the facts
and details of what wrongs were really committed will
come to be known, but in the meantime we as hunters
need more than ever to work hard for our “team” and
fight back by promoting all the good SCI does; not only
in Drayton Valley but throughout the world. Countless
dollars are spent on conservation, humanitarian and
education projects, and right now SCI is in a large fight to
protect your future to hunt.
SCI needs numbers, please speak to your friends and
colleagues in the field. Tell them to join SCI today to
support the only hunting organization that truly fights for
your hunting rights.
This Chapter was built by a team...our volunteers, our
sponsors, our members, and our Board of Directors.
We should be proud of what we have built. By working
together and strengthening our numbers SCI will
continue to protect our freedom as outdoor enthusiasts
who hunt worldwide.
Hope to see you all at the
NASP PROVINCIALS
The SCI Drayton Valley Chapter Sponsored & Coordinated
the 2015 NASP Alberta Provincial Archery Tournament.
The 2015 NASP (National Archery in the Schools Program)
Provincial Tournament was the largest provincial tournament
to date and a huge success! Over 900 archers in Grades 4-12
from across Alberta competed at the Drayton Valley Omniplex
from April 23-25. Close to 400 local and area archers attended
the tournament to represent their schools and compete for top
prizes in individual and team categories. Archer’s scores were
calculated after shooting three rounds of five arrows at 10m and
three rounds of five arrows at 15m, with a practice round at each
distance. Not only did the tournament feature the nail-biting
archery competition, but spectators and competitors were also
able to participate in fishing, hunting, and archery games, facepainting,
and a tradeshow booth. Event organizers and supporters
from SCI Drayton Valley Chapter, Brazeau Bowbenders and
Alberta Hunter Education Instructor’s Association (AHEIA)
were extremely pleased with the great turn-out for the event
and the amazing support from local volunteers, coaches and
the community. The event was also made possible through the
generous support of the Drayton Valley Hospitality & Tourism
Authority. Local archers faired very well, with many top ten
placements in both individual and team categories.
NASP continues to grow exponentially in Drayton Valley and
Brazeau County because of support from local organizations like
the SCI Drayton Valley Chapter and the Brazeau Bowbenders.
SCI Drayton Valley Chapter has contributed more than $90,000
to NASP in the community of Drayton Valley and surrounding
area to date. Tournament organizers are hoping to host the
2016 NASP Provincial Tournament in Drayton Valley and will
have confirmation to start planning next year’s event within the
next few months.
“Rhythm of the Bush”
Laurel Barbieri Collage Giclee
SCI - Drayton Valley Chapter is once again pleased to present to our guests a non-typical
method of artistry by Laurel Barbieri. Her work captures nature and animals in a very raw
form. It connects the art viewer with the history of the animal dating back to the first record
of them carved into the walls of caves. To simulate this effect and history Laurel created
her own method and form of painting called relief sculpture. This layering of material and
paint create a life for the painting that simulates the walls of ancient caves. We are pleased
to present you with this beautiful collage collection entitled “Rhythm of the Bush“.
to hunt for a Grizzly Bear and Dall Sheep. Hunting these species
consists of a lot of glassing from high areas so some climbing
is in order; it pays to be in good shape for this hunt. Hunt is
1x1 guided with a Grizzly Bear & Dall Sheep Trophy fee included.
Hunt is to be taken in August 2016. Hunter is responsible for
through art donations for the Wyoming Wildlife Heritage Expo,
The Moose Foundation, The Elk Foundation, The Sheep Federation
and Safari Club International. We are thrilled to once again have
Brandon supporting our chapter this year.
He has created this piece especially for us, entitled "Snowed In", which
depicts a Canadian whitetail bedded in the snow with a backdrop of
wild roses behind him. After a cold day, there is just that moment
when the sun peeks through a cloud and warms up the cold setting.
Target, Bow & Arrow Combo Package
The SCI Drayton Valley Chapter has been instrumental in
introducing the NASP Program within our local schools. The
efforts have resulted in over 14 schools participating in the
program and a partnered initiative which brought the 2015
NASP Provincials to our community. NASP has become a
welcome addition to the lives of so many local youth and we are
dedicated and passionate about continuing efforts toward its
continued success. We are pleased to present this official NASP
FISHING DOCK
The Fishing Dock was extremely busy over the summer months with a number of
groups getting great enjoyment from their visits. Our Chapter extends a special thank
you to Shannon Davie for her dedication and many hours spent hosting our Chapter
visitors. Appreciation is also extended to Bill and Wyatt Davie for attending to the
grounds and keeping the area looking so beautiful for our guests. Without these
individuals contributions and passion for this chapter project we would not be able to
host so many visitors at the dock. Their gift of time is a blessing to so many.
HARDCOR FISH TALES
Another successful bid at a SCI auction in Drayton Valley
brought me the great fortune of meeting the Hillman family
and friends. The Hillmans have a fishing camp set up south
of Atlin, British Columbia, which is accessed by a half hour
helicopter ride. This trip was going to be one I will never
forget and recommend to anyone who enjoys angling for big
Salmon and seeing Grizzly bears. I was accompanied on this
particular trip by my friend Ryan.
The day had arrived at the end of June, Ryan and I were packed
up and on a plane headed for Whitehorse in the Yukon. Upon
arrival in Whitehorse we settled into our hotel and the hotel
bar for a couple of drinks before our fishing adventure was
to begin. Now on a side note, I'm a big fan of Gold Rush, low
and behold but who came into the bar that evening......Parker
Schnabel, one of the cast members from Gold Rush. I must
say now I'm not as big of a Parker fan as I was before. He
asked for a beer but last call had already passed so I said “Hey
Parker, I have an extra one if you want it.” He just scoffed at
me and left. What a pompous jerk. Anyway back to the fishing.
The next day brought our transportation from Whitehorse
to Atlin. Ryan and I were picked up by the Mayor of Atlin,
George, a witty older gentleman that sort of had that Colonel
Sanders look about him. As George was driving us he had
many stories of the town of Atlin as he had lived there most
of his life. The one story he told Ryan and I which I will never
forget is; "Boys, there are two girls for every guy in Atlin.....the
same two, but two never the less". Both Ryan and I had a huge
chuckle over that one and will never forget it.
Our first fishing day had now arrived. We were at the heli pad
where we met up with Mary and Elaine. These ladies were to
be our camp cooks for the week while we were in the camp.
We boarded the helicopter and flew south along the Atlin
Lake over a continental divide and arrived at the Hillman
camp. The camp was set up on the mountainside some 100
yards up from the Nakina River, which we would be fishing
during our stay. The accommodations were cabin style with
beds and a fireplace, what more could you ask for in such a
remote accessible camp.
Ryan and I were guided by Jordan, John and Brad during our
five days. We walked and waded into fishing holes like "Home
Pool, Rainbow Pool, Lees Run, The Gorge", etc. Ryan and I
fished a variety of different methods for our quarry, which was
the Chinook salmon. We used gear rods, Spey rods and also I
brought along my 8 weight fly rod. The gear is easy to fish; bait,
foam float, cast, repeat…pretty straight forward. The Chinook
were hitting this method repeatedly, and don't get me wrong
after a couple hour drought with no fish on the Spey or fly rod
I would chuck some gear just to get a couple landed.
While I did manage to catch and land a couple of Chinook
on my fly rod, the method in which I fished almost entirely
was the Spey or Skagit. While Spey and Skagit are similar for
casting techniques, Skagit does employ relatively short lines
and shooting heads. I had never tried this method of casting as
compared to the regular fly cast but for chucking big flies and
weight with minimal effort, this is the way to do it. I learned
three different techniques of casting the Spey rod, all of which
involve using the water as an anchor. The variety of casts I
learned and used were: the Double Spey, the Snap-t, and the
Snake Roll. All were useful in my new found method of casting
big flies and weight to willing salmon in the river.
Catching these monsters that average 16 to 30 pounds on a
14 foot Spey rod was right up my ally and as near to a fly rod
as you can get, you feel everything that fish is doing both in and
out of the water. Rolling up on these fishing holes you could
see the salmon stacked up waiting to move further up stream
to their spawning beds. We would wade into the water a bit
cast, drift, wait, repeat. An explosion of power would erupt
when these fish would lash out at our offerings. The sheer
thrill of having one of these big fish on was something I will
never forget.
While both Ryan and myself caught and released many fish
everyday, it was Ryan that caught the biggest fish of our trip,
sorry bud have to say it.......while using gear. Nevertheless it was
a 50 plus behemoth and he had a battle on his hands for sure.
After setting the hook on our last day on this huge salmon it
took off back to the ocean or downstream from where we
were. Brad and I had moved down to Home Pool to await
Ryan and John. They never arrived the 500 yards downstream
and managed to land this fish mid River between pools and
took some great photos of the last fish landed on our trip.
NORTHERN BC HELI FISHING ADVENTURES
Back at camp everyone was all smiles for Ryan and the
story of the one that didn’t get away..... Even Bub's (aka
Brad) had a grin from ear to ear! We gathered on our
last evening as always on the deck and shared stories of
our days that seemed to fly by. We all enjoyed another
world class meal cooked by Mary and Elaine and also
enjoyed a few last night cocktails.
I would like to add that as I enjoyed the hiking, fishing,
camp, and the company of the people, a total added
bonus was the Grizzly Bear encounters we had while
being up there. We seen many bears from single roaming
bears to a sow with three cubs. This added to a trip of a
lifetime and thanks to Brad, brought me the closest to a
Grizzly I think I ever want to be.
The team, or family, that Jordan and Katie Hillman have
assembled for their world class fishery is unequal to any other
trip I have experienced. I will return to fish these rivers again
in 2017. I urge anyone who wants to learn new techniques or
use the old ones for catching big Chinook salmon and seeing
bears up close to give Jordan and Katie Hillman a try with
Northern BC Heli Fishing Adventures. As said World Class
people and fishing! Thank you for a trip I will never forget!
Until next time....
Keep your hook wet!
BLUE BAGS FOR COLOMBIA
In February of this year our Chapter was thrilled to be involved in
the delivery of two Humanitarian Blue Bags destined to the city of
Caicedonia located in the province of Valle of Cauca in the northwest
area of Colombia. This delivery was able to assist two target groups
in the area; five (5) families suffering from internal displacement due to
violence, and an association for the blind.
For the families in need, they were provided with clothes, shoes,
grooming kits, packages of school supplies and a variety of toys. The
Blind Association was gifted with 14 folding graphite mobility canes,
4 Math Abacus’, 3 Braille Playing Cards, Braille tablets, dominoes, T-
Shirts, underwear, socks, grooming kits and vitamin supplements.
In addition our chapters support allowed for these individuals to be
trained in how to process and package fruits, resulting in the start up
of a small business. Part of the money collected as compensation for
the sale of these products is being destined to pay medical expenses
that the members of this association need to manage their medical
conditions.
Through the provision of these essential supplies and personnel
support in educating individuals on ways and means in how to be
productive members of their society they have achieved greater levels
of satisfaction. Our Chapter couldn’t be more pleased to be involved
with such a wonderful opportunity.
Grouse Kebabs
(Recipe and Image Source: http://www.outdoorcanada.ca/grouse-kebabs)
Cubes of ruffed grouse breast skewered along with grape tomatoes, mushrooms and onion make for wonderful kebabs. No ruffies? You can
also use other grouse, as well as duck, goose or wild turkey breast meat. (Serves: 4)
INGREDIENTS
• 4 ruffed grouse breasts (skinless, boneless)
• 3 sprigs fresh thyme
• 1/2 cup olive oil
• 1/2 cup white wine
• Salt & black pepper to taste
• 1 red onion, cut into ¾-inch cubes
• 16 grape tomatoes, whole
• 16 brown mushrooms, whole
• Canola oil
PREPARATION
- Cut grouse breasts into ¾-inch cubes and place in a zip-lock bag with thyme, olive oil, wine, salt and pepper. Marinate in
refrigerator for 30 minutes.
- Remove grouse from bag and thread onto skewers, alternating with onion cubes, tomatoes and mushrooms. Brush kebabs with
canola oil and grill until grouse is cooked through.
- Serve with fragrant basmati rice and carrot rounds.
- Tip: If you use wooden skewers, first soak them in water for 15 minutes to help prevent them from splintering or burning.
Whether you use stainless steel or wooden skewers, coat them in cooking oil before threading on the grouse and vegetables so
the food will easily slide off after grilling. Also coat the grill with cooking oil so the kebabs don’t stick.
- For the glass: For this tasty light meal, fill your glass with a full-bodied beer or a heavy Chardonnay
