Last week I had the pleasure of attending my first ever Steve Chase
Humanitarian Awards. Not only had the kind people at Desert Aids
Project invited me to the gala on Saturday, but I was most humbled to
be asked to attend the pre-Steve Chase VIP mixer that took place on
the rooftop of the Desert Regional Medical Center the night before.
By the way, for those not in the know (as many are not), I wasn’t until
I did proper research on Mr. Chase. Steve Chase was an Interior
Designer and a prominent Palm Springs Resident.
When he wasn’t designing the insides of some of the Desert’s most
majestic homes, Steve donated his time and money to the Palm
Springs Art Museum, The Living Desert, The McCallum Theatre, and
perhaps most notably - The Desert Aids Project. Mr. Chase helped
coordinate D.A.P.’s first fundraiser.
When Steve passed away due to AIDS-related complications back in 1994,
the first Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards took place here in Palm Springs.
Desert Aids Project is dedicated to helping people with AIDS and HIV
live longer stronger lives. The event has raised millions of dollars for
direct client services.
The 22nd Annual Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards held at the Palm
Springs Convention Center in the heart of this glorious city was a wellproduced
fusion of glitz, glamour, fashion and fundraising!
Some of the Desert’s finest walked along the ‘Pink Carpet’ to an
enormous reception area inside the foyer which was home to a huge
high-end silent auction.
Certainly one of the highlights from the evening for me was seeing
Barbara Keller’s impeccable acting talents up on the big screen. A true
pro if ever I saw one – The camera loves Barbara, and so do I!
But, (and I am sure even Barbara would agree) the biggest highlight

of the evening was when Annette Bloch took
to the stage to make an astounding announcement
that was far beyond anyone’s expectation.
Ms. Bloch, longtime philanthropist, made
a historic donation of $3 million to expand
medical facilities at D.A.P in Palm Springs to
not just care for HIV patients, but also anyone
who does not have health insurance.
Honoree Jim Casey told the audience, “I
tear up every time I think about this. I never
thought it could happen that we would be
living in an era where living with HIV and AIDS
is doable.”
The ‘Queen of Funk’, better known as
legendary music artist Chaka Khan was the
headliner of the night, rocking a top-notch
performance of some of her greatest hits to
the sold out audience. Awesome stuff!

A few months ago we talked and I was going to interview you but you were
about to go on a whirlwind of events that unfolded.
Lucie: Yes, it has been crazy. You look at your calendar months before and
you’re like “there is nothing going on” and then all of a sudden it’s like Walt
Disney just threw up on your calendar! (laughter) I am one of those people that
has to have a paper calendar. It’s just so much easier to look back in a hurry.
Like I can find out “when was the last time I had my hair cut?”
Levvy: I want to ask you about Latin Roots, because that seems so interesting.
How did that come about?
Lucie: It is interesting how that came about! I was doing a show at the 92nd
Street Y (YMCA) in New York which is famous for doing lyrics and lyricists shows.
They do something like 30 shows a year. A friend of mine was producing a show
on Ira Gershwin. Rex Reid was hosting it and we were producing a whole show
about the music Ira Gershwin wrote without George. We were in rehersals one
day when Debra and I started talking about phenominal arrangements. We were
working with Tedd Firth, a wonderful arranger. And my arranger Ron Abel is
incredible. And so many great arrangements have disappeared because people
die and then noone sings it that way. Debra said, “Speaking of that, where are
all your father’s arrangements from the Desi Arnaz Orchestra?” And I said,
“Oh, I had them for a long long time and I put them in some of my shows and
then at one point I gave them all to the Library of Congress.” And then she said
wouldn’t it be interesting to do an entire evening saluting the Latin music in this
country? And we did that. She said, you produce it, and cast it, and be in it, and
write it....and I said, Ohhhh! Okay! I said, how long do I have for that? And she
said 9 months. I produced a baby in 9 months so I am sure I can produce this
show.
Levvy: (laughter) Very well put!

Lucie: Well we did it. And it was called BABALU. Raul Esparza starred in it as
well as Valerie Pettiford and myself. My brother played the percussions. It was
phenomenal! We did 5 performances at the 92nd Street Y. We ended up taking
it to Miami, to the Adrienne Arsht Center for another week down there in July.
Then we came back and did it at the Library of Congress where they taped it for
prosperity’s sake.
Levvy: Isn’t that amazing?!
Lucie: Yeah. And during that time I was talking to my musical director, Ron Abel
and he and I had talked for maybe about a decade prior to this about putting
on another CD and tilting it towards a Latin sound as a ‘Thank You’--a tip of
the ‘straw hat’, if you will. And why not? Because I feel that is where I got my
musical knowledge...
Levvy: You are beautiful Lucie! I love you.
Lucie: Well, it is true! So at the same time....talk about being busy, at the same
time we were putting together a show we produced and recorded a CD called
Latin Roots. And the CD came out the exact week that the show came out in
New York.
Levvy: And where would you get that CD?
Lucie: Oh, online. You could get it at Itunes or anywhere you buy music. It has
all of the tunes from the show, plus we added in a few more to compliment
that. Songs like “Blame it on the Bossa Nova” and “Just to Be Near You”, and
wonderful songs like that. It was a great CD. And then we talked about moving
the BABALU show on and travelling with it. Everyone was asking about it, but
none of the people could go.
Levvy: Everybody has different lives in different directions, huh?
Lucie: Yes, everyone was involved all over in different directions and so I
thought, well, I’m going to do a hybrid of BABALU and my CD.
Levvy: There you go!
Lucie: So I am taking a lot of the songs that Raul did in the show and that Valerie
sang in the show and combining it with my songs. I added a ton more video,
so there are wonderful background visuals. And I love doing the show. I am
really proud of the way it is arched. Tommy Tune came in and directed the last
run through of it to make sure that it was perfected. And he added a couple of
songs, which was brilliant. I have known him for a long time. We have worked
together for years. I trusted him to come in and help me.
Levvy: So now I want to ask you, how “Pippin” came about?
Lucie: Well, I got a phone call one afternoon. The same day--not ten minutes
after I was asked to direct “Hazel” by Ron Abel, who wrote the music. The
phone rang and it was Barry Weissler asking me if I would like to do the first
national company of “Pippin” and play the grandmother part.
Levvy: Wow!
Lucie: and I knew exactly what that entailed! The trapeze act, the whole....I
wanted to say yes, but I went one more time to look at the show. I had to hang
upside down on a trapeez at 25 feet above the stage and just by your pelvic
bone! No chains, no mats! Nothing! And I said YES to both things, you know?
Because at this age if I don’t say yes to things, then when am I gonna?
Levvy: (laughing) Yes, and didn’t Broadway World have something to say about
that! [Lucie Arnaz wins Best Supporting Actress]
Lucie: Well, yes, it was nice. Very, very nice. So it ended up that while I was in
“Pippin”, I was asked to go to NY to do a month of the Broadway production
while the girl who originally did it on Broadway played it in Los Angeles. So I
went and it turns out that was the exact same time where we did the reading
for “Pippin”. Not only was I on Broadway every night doing that show, I was
directing the week-long staged reading of Hazel [a Broadway musical based on
the 1961-66 TV series Hazel] in the few hours that I had off.
Levvy: So tell me a little bit about the play Hazel. Because I always saw the
character Hazel as the parent/manager of the entire Baxter family.
Lucie: Yes, but in the play it starts out with her trying to get the job with the
Baxters. She didn’t already have it. So there is a concept....like, Is it going to
work? Am I going to get the job? And that is amazing because you always think
of Hazel as being a person who always does everything right. Well in this play it
all takes place before Hazel becomes a maid. She had worked for this family for
25 years and the children had grown up and they don’t need her anymore. And
she really walks into a hornets nest with this [Baxter] family. Because it was the
60’s. The mother wants to go back to work and the husband is a very staid sort
of conservative whose wife just needs to stay home. And the kid doesn’t get
enough attention from the dad. And Hazel has to save the mother’s ability to do
something extra outside the house. And fix the kids love for his parents and in
the meantime try to keep her job!
Levvy: A Supernanny!
Lucie: So, it is a really good play and the music is wonderful. And then they
came back to me and said we are going to do a three week workshop which is
full-on choreography, sets, but cheap! You know, $300,000--not millions. And
you do it in a rehearsal space and then they bring people in the hopes of raising
the money for the production. And we did it, and they got the production at the
Drury Lane Theatre in Chicago. I think they start the rehearsals Monday.
Levvy: I can see that going in to a film after the theatre for a while.
Lucie: Maybe. And now they have this wonderful choreographer director taking
it on. There is no way unless I directed a few things more would I want to
shoulder a 1.5 million dollar musical at this point.
Levvy: That’s a lot of pressure. But you could handle it, I’m sure!
Lucie: No, they are my friends. I would want them to be with somebody who
has been down the pike a few times! I get just as much of a thrill knowing we
did what we did with it. I was the teacher coach who got them ready for the
auditions. And they got the work. They got the job. And hopefully they are
going to go to Broadway.
Levvy: Doesn’t that make you feel great that you spurred someone?
Lucie: Great! And I was glad to be able to do that.
Levvy: You are so humble. Don’t you know those kids are going to look back
and say, “Lucie Arnaz spurred me on to Broadway.” You probably don’t grasp
that like a lot of people do. But you are amazing Lucie.
Another thing I want to talk about is ONE NIGHT ONLY. That is coming up. And
Michael Childers is such an amazing guy.
Lucie: Yes. He is a fire-cracker. He just burns at both ends! If there is anyone as
busy as me it is Michael Childers.
Levvy: You know, he was the photographer for my friend Randal Kleiser’s film,
Grease. Randal and I have been friends for about 30 years.
Lucie: I almost did that film!
Levvy: Did you really?
Lucie: Randal and I did an audition for Mike Eisner actually. It was for [Betty]
Rizzo, the Stockard Channing part. I was booked to do another show and Alan
Carr kept saying, “You have the part. You did a great audition. We want you. I’m
the producer. Randal is the director. You have the part.” But I said, you know
I am booked to do this part, Bye Bye Birdie in Milwaukee like a Summer Stock
show. If I am not going to do Bye Bye Birdie then I need to let them know by
a certain time. Otherwise I have to pay $5000 to get out of the contract. And
for me at 19--- whatever that was, that was a lot of money. They said, “no, no,
no, no, no, you have the part.” And I said, well can I just get a contract? I mean
is this done done? Signed sealed and delivered?.....”Well”, they said, “we are
still looking at the other people in the cast and trying to match them up.” So I
said, “So I don’t have it?” It went like that around and around until I had just
one more day and they wouldn’t put it on paper so I finally had to walk away.
Stockard also followed me into ‘They’re Playing Our Song’. She replaced me
after I did it on Broadway. She was the first replacement. So I didn’t do Grease
and she played Rizzo! (laughter) And we were friends before when we did
Vanities together.
Levvy: Also Michael raises hundreds of thousands of dollars per year. So you
are going to be here at the McCallum coming up. And you are directing-again!
Lucie: Well Michael saw the three week workshop of Hazel we did in New York
and immediately said, “Will you direct the show, ONE NIGHT ONLY this year?”
I live in Palm Springs. We moved here permanently almost four years ago
now. And I got to know Michael really well. And I have actually come to Palm
Springs five or six times to be in the show. He would fly me in from New York or
wherever I was. So I know the show and what he wants from it. Having done
the BABALU show and putting together 90 minutes of music and orchestrating
it and having done 28 years of my own club acts and my shows, you know that
putting together a concert show like that, there is a WAY. It is an art. You know,
not too many ballads, get some humor in with stories....Don’t bore the people!
So, I feel obligated to make sure it is not just a cookie cutter of every other year.
I’m trying to do something maybe a little different. I’m hoping to do one off
instead of two. And it is about “Sondheim in Love” this year.
Levvy: Many friends are going this year! And a lot of them are theatre actors!
Lucie: And you know, Sondheim is theatre. It’s not just concert pop music. It
will have to be done with a more theatrical look to it. It is shaping up to be
really amazing. A lot of people are coming down who have been in the show
before. Christine Andreas has said yes again this year, thank you! I like her. She
can sing practically anything in the show as can Liz Callaway. Others are Marilyn
Maye, Lee Roy Reams, and Jason Graae, Howard McGillin, Nancy Dussault,
Brent Barrett, David Engel, Hunter Ryan Herdlicka, Barb Jungr, Millicent Martin,
Karen Ziemba from Broadway, John Barrowman, Julia Murney, Terry Ralston,
and some newer younger people from Broadway, like James Snyder.
Levvy: Those are amazing. And the show always flows so smoothly. That’s what
I love about the show.
Lucie: Yes, I am hoping it will flow along even more smoothly this year. I am
going to do away with a few of the stop and starts. There is so little rehearsal
time. That is the hardest part about doing the show. You have to have it all in
your head. You have to be beyond prepared. And with everything you have to
know exactly what you want because there is only one tech meeting with the
guys two weeks before the show. What it is going to look like, what it’s going
to sound like....the lighting people, the sound people, where they are going
to stand, how many microphones....and then 15 minute chunks of time the
day before and the day of, we run the show once before and that’s it! And the
orchestra hears the music!
Levvy: Isn’t that crazy!?
Lucie: Yes. The people have to be really prepared. And you only want to hire
people who know how to prepare and won’t come in saying, “Well, I didn’t
really have time to prepare”....Oops! Goodbye! They have to come in like a pro
and all of these people are pros who have been in the business a long time. It’s
harder for me. And some folks say it can’t be done, but we’ll see.
Levvy: Well Lucie, I have really enjoyed visiting with you. You have always been
someone I really admire and it has been really awesome to speak with you.

For over 30 years, JFS of the Desert has provided services throughout
the Coachella Valley to those in need, regardless of religion,
age, income, ethnicity or life style. JFS services and programs are
made possible through the financial support of Jewish Federation

nearly 4,000 men, women and children served are from low-income

“Sondheim In Love” Tickets Now on Sale
Benefiting Jewish Family Service of the Desert
Tickets for the 9th annual Michael Childers’ production of One Night
Only are now on sale. One Night Only is one of the desert’s most
anticipated evenings and sells out quickly. The star-studded musical
production is set for 6:30 pm, Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at the
McCallum Theatre and benefits Jewish Family Service of the Desert
(JFS). This year’s production will be directed by the incomparable
Lucie Arnaz.

2016 COMMUNITY JUSTICE AWARD
The Bloom in the Desert Ministries Community Justice Award celebrates
persons engaged in varied social justice, peace, and human rights advocacy
work in the Coachella Valley who have not received significant
public recognition. The award supports the portion of Bloom’s mission
statement that says: “We agitate for God’s peace and justice in our
communities and around the world.” Honorees are selected from written
nominations submitted by Bloomers and friends.
Paul Zak is the recipient of the 2nd Annual Bloom in the Desert Ministries
Community Justice Award. He inspires many reasons to Celebrate the
Struggle for Equality. He will receive the award at Bloom’s 7th Annual
Spring Fling Cabaret and Silent Auction on March 4, 2016. The musical
evening benefit theme is “Freedom’s Song in Bloom” a Celebration of the
Struggle for Equality.
As volunteer outreach coordinator for Equality California, Desert Cities,
Paul organized local church and clergy support in the marriage equality
struggle. He wrote and shepherded marriage equality resolutions adopted
by the Palm Springs Human Rights Commission and city councils in Palm
Springs and Cathedral City.
Paul is studying now to be a trainer for California’s 2015 End of Life Options
Act, ensuring all people have access to the full range of choices in
their end of life care. Bloom was the first church in California to officially
and publicly endorse that legislation.
“Freedom’s Song in Bloom,” A Celebration of the Struggle for Equality, is
the show theme for the 7th Annual Spring Fling Cabaret & Silent Auction
benefiting Bloom in the Desert Ministries, Friday, March 4, 2015, 6pm to
9pm. The new show features Carnegie Hall-bound Cathedral City High
School Lion’s Pride Chamber Singers, teaming with locally esteemed
performers Keisha D, Jerome Elliott, and Charles Herrera. Creative direction
is by Charlie Creasy and Scott Davis. Coachella Valley social justice
activist Paul Zak will receive the second annual Bloom in the Desert Ministries
Community Justice Award. The Just Sax quartet will provide dinner
music.
“Freedom’s Song in Bloom” honors a variety of historic struggles for
equality and celebrates progress made toward a more inclusive society.

Bloom in the Desert Ministries is a United Church of Christ and Reconciling
Ministries congregation that celebrates diversity, friendship and
service. The fundraising ensures continuing ministries among houseless,
working poor, underprivileged school children, valley musicians, LGBT
activists, seniors, and peace and justice advocates.
Previously, Paul advocated for LGBT rights through activities at the
Desert Pride Center, and on the Board of the local chapter of the National
Association of Social Workers.
Paul summarizes his commitment to social justice saying: “I believe we
are called to serve humanity, advocate for ‘the least of these,’ and challenge
social and ecclesiastical institutions when they forget their mission
of service.”
Paul now works on LGBT justice issues through the Desert Stonewall
Democrats. He chairs their committee that vets local and state candidates
to encourage work for democratic/human values, advocating for
LGBT people, the poor, and the oppressed. Paul encouraged the group
to include a social action component in their monthly meetings.
Born in Philadelphia, Paul went to college in the Midwest and became
a conscientious objector in 1969. After college, Paul joined the Dominican
Order, serving as a priest for12 years. Paul left the priesthood upon
concluding he could not be true to himself as a gay man and a priest in
the institutional church. He worked as a social worker in San Francisco
serving people without resources, suffering from HIV, mental illness, and
addictions. Later he established his own psychotherapy practice, which
he continued in Palm Springs.
He met his husband, Robert, in 1984. They moved to Palm Springs in
2003, and were finally able to marry in 2008. Paul says: “I am honored to
receive Bloom’s Community Justice Award and will strive to live up to the
ideals and values the award represents.”
