<strong>Self</strong> Inquiry: Its Meaning and Direction 121<br />

1. Set <strong>the</strong> house in order (as described).<br />

2. Learn <strong>to</strong> conserve <strong>the</strong> vital energies. Find determination and desire for direction with <strong>the</strong><br />

success <strong>of</strong> conserving <strong>the</strong> energies.<br />

3. Direct <strong>the</strong> energies pr<strong>of</strong>itably (see sections on meditation, Jacob’s Ladder, and betweenness).<br />

THE LIFE [<strong>the</strong> Sanghat]:<br />

1. Value bro<strong>the</strong>rhood and cooperation. Bro<strong>the</strong>rhood involves spiritual, mental, and physical<br />

help, in that order.<br />

2. Utilize and understand <strong>the</strong> Law <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ladder. <strong>The</strong> Sanghat is <strong>the</strong> matrix in which <strong>the</strong> Law<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ladder bears fruit.<br />

3. Become a vec<strong>to</strong>r. You must become a vec<strong>to</strong>r before you become <strong>the</strong> truth.<br />

THE TRUTH [<strong>the</strong> Buddha]:<br />

1. Speak and act <strong>the</strong> truth in all things relative (physical or vocal truth).<br />

2. Do not rationalize (mental truth).<br />

3. Become <strong>the</strong> truth (Absolute Truth).<br />

All <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> above aspects <strong>of</strong> work must be done simultaneously. One should not concentrate on<br />

personal affairs exclusively and forget <strong>the</strong> bro<strong>the</strong>rhood or <strong>the</strong> practice <strong>of</strong> truth.<br />

One must remove <strong>the</strong> urgency <strong>of</strong> habits. Habits are not sins, but can sap one’s energy and<br />

even cause trouble or death. One should not allow slavery <strong>to</strong> any habit or appetite. <strong>The</strong>se include a<br />

wide range <strong>of</strong> distractions and obsessions which may not be negative except in relation <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> path.<br />

With this energy and desire thus salvaged, add <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> intensity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> vec<strong>to</strong>r, harmonizing <strong>the</strong><br />

body, and raising somatic energy <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> head. With this mental energy one will <strong>the</strong>n engage in<br />

philosophical research by investigating <strong>the</strong> systems taught in <strong>the</strong> different schools <strong>of</strong> spiritual and<br />

psychological work. We also meditate upon our reactions, learn discrimination, and learn <strong>to</strong> react<br />

with discrimination. Finally, when <strong>the</strong> observation <strong>of</strong> reactions becomes intense enough<strong>the</strong> mind<br />

will s<strong>to</strong>p.<br />

<strong>The</strong> group or sanghat serves <strong>to</strong> sustain and remind <strong>the</strong> members, thus keeping <strong>the</strong>m on <strong>the</strong><br />

path and stimulating <strong>the</strong>ir progress. <strong>The</strong> Law <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ladder is used. One does not advance without<br />

helping and being helped. <strong>The</strong> Law <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ladder is <strong>the</strong> formula by which <strong>the</strong> group is able <strong>to</strong> find for<br />

all someone <strong>to</strong> help and someone who can use help.<br />

One must become a vec<strong>to</strong>r, and <strong>to</strong> fully implement <strong>the</strong> Law <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Vec<strong>to</strong>r, one usually needs<br />

someone <strong>to</strong> moni<strong>to</strong>r progress and function as a catalyst at <strong>the</strong> proper moment. <strong>The</strong> full understanding<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Law <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Vec<strong>to</strong>r involves <strong>the</strong> knowledge <strong>of</strong> reversing it. As it is now, it is aimed at <strong>the</strong><br />

relative world scene.<br />

In order <strong>to</strong> insure individual and group success, we must once again realize <strong>the</strong> significance <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> term: commitment. As in all things, <strong>the</strong> commitment should be three fold: body, mind, and<br />

essence. One cannot commit one’s essence, as it is already committed. We are essentially one as far<br />

as <strong>the</strong> Absolute is concerned. However, <strong>the</strong>re is a paradox in this, which first requires <strong>the</strong> semblance<br />

<strong>of</strong> individual effort from within <strong>the</strong> illusion in order for this realization <strong>of</strong> noindividuality and noeffort<br />

<strong>to</strong> occur.<br />

<strong>The</strong> ThreeFold <strong>Path</strong> can be summed up like this: <strong>to</strong> act and relate truthfully in all ways, and<br />

promote parallel effort in working with o<strong>the</strong>rs is <strong>the</strong> Life; <strong>to</strong> thoroughly know <strong>the</strong> truth about oneself<br />

and <strong>the</strong> world through mental purification is <strong>the</strong> Way; and <strong>to</strong> eliminate <strong>the</strong> false egoself, <strong>to</strong> see <strong>the</strong>
