Dear Parents and Tenby Community,
We are pleased to announce the appointment of the new Head of Primary for the international
section. We welcome Ms. Lam Wee Sim as our new Head of Primary who will be joining us from
Tenby Schools Setia Eco Park where she is currently the Deputy Head of the international
Primary section. Wee Sim brings with her a wealth of experience as an excellent classroom
practictioner and leader. We also wish to announce that Ms. Samantha Leuty, Head of Early
Years at Meru Campus has been appointed Deputy Head of International Primary. Both appointments
will start from September 2016 and in the interim, I will take over the leadership of the
international primary section when Mr. David Key completes his contract at the end of this term.
Parents from the primary international section will receive a letter in the coming week to this
effect.
International Mother Tongue Day
This week Tenby International Primary School celebrated International Mother’s Tongue Day on
Monday 22nd February. Did you know that students from Tenby Schools Ipoh come from over 30
different nationalities and hence we have students with a wide range of mother tongues. We
would like to thank parents who took the time to come in to speak to their child’s class about their
mother tongue. The students learned that their mother tongue is not only important as a means
of communication but also as a means of preserving one’s culture and tradition. You will see
pictures of the Special Assembly and activities for this event later in this newsletter. Such activities
fit in very well with our primary IPC International Mindedness statement as well as in line with
our mission and core values which are International Mindedness, Lifelong Learning and Respect.
Continuing the Partnership with Queen’s University & Stranmillis University College,
Belfast
The Tenby Group of Schools has for many years made the commitment to invest in teacher
development. As such we have formed several key partnerships with universities to assist with
developing staff.
The universities that we have partnerships with are:
• Queen’s University, Belfast (who offer the Post Graduate Certificate in Education
international (PGCEi) for our secondary teachers)
• Stranmillis University College, Belfast (who offer the PGCEi for our primary teachers)
and;
• Columbia University, USA who post two senior teachers on their summer research
programme to work alongside our teachers annually.
In addition, we offer the Cambridge International Diploma for Teaching and Learning (CIDTL) as
a tool to support our teachers in developing better pedagogy in the classroom.
For the last few years, we have hosted teacher trainees from Stranmillis University College for
teaching practices. Only high performing teacher trainees are given this opportunity. In doing so,
our teachers and children benefit from working with up-to-date ideas from the university, developing
creativity and shared learning experiences.
This year we once again host four student teachers from Stranmillis University College, Belfast.
They arrived last weekend and will be with us for a 4 week placement and will work in TEYCI and
our primary international section.

PGCEi Visiting Lecturers
This week, Tenby group welcomed two lecturers who oversee the staff who are completing the PGCEi course. Dr.
Karen Kerr, Lecturer in Education from Queen’s University, Belfast and Dr. Sharon Jones, Lecturer in Education
from Stranmillis University College, Belfast. Dr. Karen Kerr spent 2 days with us this week observing and supporting
the teachers on this course. The visit reinforces Tenby’s commitment to improving teacher education and
professional development.
Tenby Sixth Form
On Wednesday UK and Australian Universities came to give further education counselling to the Sixth Form
students, the response was very good and we look forward to further sessions for our Sixth Formers.
In addition, the Tenby Sixth Form’s Annual Leadership Camp takes place this weekend in Cameron Highlands.
An Integrated Residential Trip
In line with our Vision of ‘A United World at Peace – Through Education’, Year 7 and Form 1 students visited
Penang this week for a joint school trip. We look forward to reading their account of the trip in the next Newsletter.
Literacy Week – Book Donation & Scholastic
Literacy week begins on Monday and there are activities planned throughout the week. Every morning between
09:30hrs to 11:30hrs there will be a Scholastic book sale in Block B, parents are invited to come for this book sale
as well.
If you have any unwanted books which you would be willing to donate to school, please pass them on to your
child’s class teacher. On Friday the Literacy Week will culminate with Character Costume Day where Primary
students may come dressed in their favourite book character.
Traffic Issues – Be Considerate Please
We have received a growing number of complaints from parents and the public about the traffic, particularly at
dismissal time. We urge our community to be considerate to one another and other road users by:
• Following traffic rules
• Giving way
• Not cutting the queue (others have been waiting patiently)
• Listening to the Guards
Alternatively, parents may park outside and walk into school or plan to arrive at school at the dismissal time, not
before.
We have written to the police department to ask for assistance during peak hours and have yet to receive a
response.
Car Stickers
Lastly, please ensure you have the current Tenby car stickers for 2016/2017. If you have not applied for the new
car stickers you may get a requisition form from the main office. Cars with the old car sticker will not be allowed to
enter the school beginning Tuesday 1st March. We thank you for your cooperation and support to ensure the
security of our students on Campus.
MoneyTree Academy – Financial Literacy Programs
Tenby Schools Ipoh is currently working with MoneyTree Academy to offer Financial Literacy classes as a CCA in
the near future. MoneyTree Academy is an educational service provider in its own right, and offers financial literacy
programs at three levels: Basic (ages 6-8 years), Junior (ages 9-12 years), and Apprentice (ages 13 and above).
The programs involve learning about money and finance through role-play and activities. In a world that is getting
smaller yet more economically complex, it is important for children and teenagers to learn how to manage their
money and become more financially savvy!
Beginning Monday, 29 February 2016 and over the next few months, MoneyTree Academy has kindly offered to
run free trial classes for all Tenby Ipoh students. Every class level will be given four one-hour sessions over the
course of four weeks – a one-hour class per week. Parents will be invited to the final session for a first-hand view
and/or participation.
Trial classes will begin with Sekolah Rendah Tenby – see schedule below – with the TIS primary classes, and then
the senior classes to follow.
News from Tenby Early Years Centre
The Parents Forum held on Tuesday 23 rd February helped develop a good partnership between
parents and school. The turn up was encouraging and enabled parents to meet, share ideas and
feedback to the school. Questions raised were answered by the School Leadership Team. For those
of you who did not attend, a summary of the questions raised and the school’s response will be emailed
to you.
Once again, we have our teacher trainees from Stranmillis University College, Belfast on four weeks
stint on school placement programme. They will be here from 22 nd February to 18 th March. Two of the
trainees, Kirsten and Grainne will be with us at TEYCI, in Nursery and Reception respectively while
Stewart and Alice are at the Main Campus at Meru Raya in Year 3 and Year 6. Our teachers and
students will benefit from working with up-to-date ideas from the university, developing creativity and
sharing learning experiences.
Teddy Bear Picnic
The Teddy Bear Picnic organised by the Nursery teachers was a huge success as parents came in
full force to give their support. It was a simple yet fun morning for all who attended. Mats were laid on
the field with baskets of snacks and drinks. It was a wonderful sight watching the parents and children
having fun together. They were really excited about returning for more events organised by the school
in future.

News from Early Years Meru Campus
We had our Teddy Bear Picnic last Thursday. More teddies and parents came to join us this year
which is fantastic, it is lovely to have parents in school with us. There was a lot of family time and
food sharing, and teddies.

On Monday we had Mother Tongue day. Nine lovely mums come in to speak to us in their
languages. We had some Japanese stories, Punjabi tales, Swedish rhymes, Philippino songs,
Italian fables and French poems and stories. A big thank you to Mrs Monteiro, Mrs Intengan
Mrs Tigges, Ms Preethi, Mrs Tang, Mrs Dahlqvist, Mrs Poulin, Mrs Ito, Mrs Dartiguenave.

As we are learning about “Changes”, this week the Reception Classes learnt about colour
changes. They mixed primary colours togther and watched the colours change
Isaac and Signature mixed blue and red to make purple.
Yin Xuan and Thureshan mixed yellow and blue to make green.
Zheng Yi and Adam said that mixing colours is like magic!

For Maths this week, the focus is on adding 1 or 2 more onto a given number.
Klara, Zheng Yi and Johan are making spots on the ladybugs to help with their addition.
Our Nursery class, Little Fish went on a bear hunt. They remembered how the story began and
ended, and they sequenced what happened in the middle. They had a lot of fun role playing the
story and used their bear cave for free play. When out in the playground they carried their bears
“over and under”, “high and low”, concentrating on balancing.
YEAR 4 LEARNING
ASSEMBLY
Last Friday, Year 4 had a Fabulous Friday as it was their Learning Assembly
themed “The Rainforests” based on the current IPC topic. It was indeed unique,
expressive, creative and communicative in the way the assembly panned out. It
engaged all students in critical and creative thinking and helped them understand
themselves and the world. All students were encouraged to participate in this
extravaganza.
The astounding
emcees,
Bavadarinee (4
Green), Christyn
(4 Blue) and Kael
(4 Yellow).

The first presentation was an
invigorating tribal dance
choreographed by Mrs. Florence
Wong. Students danced with great
enthusiasm to the rhythmic African
tribal beat.
“Around The World In 10 Minutes” was an incredible presentation by
the eloquent speakers of Year 4 where they took us on a magical
journey, unveiling some of the biggest and famous tropical rainforest
around the world.

The Year 4 students made a pledge
By working together, we can all take small steps that make
a huge impact in preserving our ecosystem. We have to be
the generation that makes a difference!
The talented Year 4 students also recited a poem titled “The
Rainforest” conducted by Christyn through the Choral Speaking
presentation trained by Ms Natasha Velkumar. A skillful and
captivating performance by the Year 4s.

Last but not least, we wrapped up our assembly with the finale dance!
PROUD TEACHERS OF
YEAR 4!

NEWS FROM INTERNATIONAL PRIMARY
Year 5 Mother Tongue Day
In conjunction with the Mother Tongue Day in Tenby International Primary, Year 5
were very fortunate to have Mrs. Renata Sommer, who kindly dropped by to have an
amazing time with the children and shared her mother tongue which is Portuguese.
She explained about the origins of the language and its influence all over the world.
Mrs. Sommer also taught the children a game and conducted a quiz at the end. The
lucky winners received books as prizes from Mrs. Sommer. The children enjoyed the
session and we would like to thank her very much for her
kind contribution.
The following day Mr. Ricky Parlanti dropped by and had a
session with the students from Year 5 Blue and Year 5
Green. He introduced his mother tongue which is Italian.
He explained about how the Italian language has spread
all over the world and has many interesting features and
usage.
Mr Parlanti’s session also ended with a quiz by the
students and we would like to thank him for his participation in our Mother Tongue Day.

Investigators (Scientific Enquiry: Materials and their properties)
IPC – Year 6 Blue
In our IPC topic of Investigators, we conducted many
experiments and tests as part of our “Forensic Training” to
become Tenby Junior Investigators!
At the completion of the training and as part of our assessment,
we were asked to investigate who was the culprit of the crime.
We had to utilise the investigative skills we developed through
our training, along with the clues found, to solve the crime.
The clues were:

A Styrofoam cup
The victim without shoes
A mysterious liquid found near the victim’s mouth and
throat
The victim had blistered lips
Head injury to the victim
A written note
As part of our training assessment, we conducted a colour chromatography test (to
check which pen was used to write the note), acidity test (to check the acidity of the
mysterious liquid), heat insulation test (to see which cup insulates heat the best) and
friction test (to check the slipperiness of the shoes found with each culprit).
After our investigations, we concluded that Ms White was the culprit. We had to
present our case and conclusion to the class. We all passed our training and were
awarded a certificate!
Graduates!

This was the first time we have celebrated International Mother Tongue day at this school. It was great to see
so many parents coming in to share their Mother tongues language with the students. Thank you very much for
giving up your time to help us.
We had a number of excellent learning activities throughout the day and the children gained a lot from it. The
assembly, which Mr. Lowery arranged, had a song in many languages beautifully arranged by Ms. Judy, our
music teacher. There was a presentation from United Nations about International Mother Tongue Day and a
wonderful video of our children welcoming each other in many different languages.

Tenby Today, the World Tomorrow
Tenby Higher Education Fair (UK and Australia)
Tenby Ipoh’s Sixth Formers attended another major event in their higher education calendar – the Higher Education
Fair staged by the UK and Australian universities. More than 21 universities were represented at the Fair held
on 24th February in the Tenby Schools Auditorium in Ipoh.
Here are some comments from the Sixth Formers who attended the 2-hour session :
“It was an enlightening experience for me. I am very interested in archaeology. My pathway to this ultimate destination
is of course the study of history at A-level, something I am very happy to do at Tenby Ipoh. I spoke to reps from
various universities in Australia. I may follow up my enquiries with the University of Tasmania which has a History
and Archaeology degree.” Emily (Cohort 13)
“My interest is in Psychology and Law. I have made enquiries with the following universities: the University of East
Anglia, Teeside University and BBP University. I discovered that a credit in Maths at IGCSE/SPM level is a requirement
for most universities if you want to do Law or Psychology. The minimum A-level entry requirement for East
Anglia is AAB, while Teeside accepts any three passes at A Level.” – Shuang Ling (Cohort 12)
“I had a long chat with the representatives from York St John University. I explored the possibility of doing medicine.
I learnt that the entry requirement is AAB for medicine with a score of 8.0 on the IELTS. Not easy, I thought. So, I
asked about the other option I had in mind – Sports Science and Physiotherapy. I was told that we need a minimum
of BBB for this option. Sports Science can be taken separately. Its weightage is stronger, hence we need an IELTS
score of 8.0 as well. Physiotherapy is a softer option where a lower IELTS score is accepted.“ – Wei Yang (Cohort
11)
“I spent some time discussing the medical degree course at the University of Adelaide. I was told they need three
As to admit a student to the course. I seem to like Adelaide because it is a smaller city than Melbourne and Sydney
and it seems culturally more pleasing for my tastes. I like challenges. So, when they told me that in addition to the
three As, I needed to cross two further hurdles, I was not daunted. Yes, I like the idea of the Aptitude Test and the
Interview. The AT has to be taken in KL and the interview is held in Singapore.” – Davasooria (Cohort 11)
“I explored two options with the University of Sheffield. One course was the Visual Animation degree. The minimum
qualification is three passes at A Level with a minimum of C for English and Maths at ICGSE /SPM level. I also liked
the hybrid course titled History, Society and Languages. This kind of hybrid course is increasingly popular in UK
universities and I am thinking seriously about this option.” – Derek (Cohort 12)
“The University of Tasmania seems to fascinate me. I have heard about the scenic beauty of the island of Tasmania
as well as about the lower cost of living there. The University offers an unlimited number of scholarships to the tune
of 25% off the tuition fees. My interest is in Medicine and Biomedical science. The entry requirement for medicine is
stiff – three As but entry to Biomedical Science can be secured with less than three As. The interesting point is that
students who excel at Biomedicine can obtain transfers to the medicine degree course after Year 1. ” – Shahmina
Gul (Cohort 11)

The following universities were among those which participated in the Higher Education Fair:
1 . Queensland University of Technology, Australia
2. Monash University, Australia
3. Deakin University, Australia
4. Adelaide University, Australia
5. MQ University
6. University of Melbourne, Australia
7. University of New South Wales, Australia
8. Teeside University,UK
9. University of Tasmania, Australia
10. University of the West of England,Bristol,UK
11.University of Sheffield,UK
12. University of Hallam,UK
13. York St.John University,UK
14. BPP University,UK
15. University of East Anglia,UK
The German School of Kuala Lumpur Futsal Tournament 2016
On Saturday 20th February, our Boy’s Football team ‘Tenby Titans’ went for a
futsal tournament hosted by the German School of Kuala Lumpur. It was a 5-a
side competition. Our school was represented by 2 teams; U15 and O15.
Mr. Ricky, Mr. Darren and Mr. Mior were our coaches for this tournament, they
gave us lots of tactics and solid formations that helped us give neat and powerful
counter attacks. Everyone did a very good job and I, as a captain, was very
proud of my team.
The O15 team this year is made up of younger and less experienced players
compared to our opponents and we were placed 5th out of 5 teams. Nevertheless
it was a great experience for our players and they learnt to be persistent
right to the end.
On the other hand, the U15 led by Zul Irwan played very well. They managed to be placed 4th out of 8 teams.
Although they missed a podium placing by just two points it was really good exposure for our younger players. By
the end of the day, it was a long and tiring day for everyone including the coaches.
I am proud to be the captain and excited about our wonderful team. I know our team members are on the verge of
great things with a great team spirit, guided by Mr. Ricky, Mr. Darren and Mr. Mior.
Netball MSSD & MSSPK
On Wednesday 17th February, Tenby Schools Ipoh participated in the annual Netball MSSD. The School sent out
the Tenby Titans U18 and U15 teams. The MSSD was held at SMK Seri Putera.
U15 Netball reflections by Nicole (Year 10 Yellow)
Everyone in the U15 team had an even chance of participating in the games. We played five games in total; we lost
two matches to SMK Jati. We lost to them in the second round of round robin and also in the finals. It was a very
close match with 4-5 in the first game and 4-6 in the second. We did a good job with our teamwork and really
brought it together as a team, especially taking into account that many members of the team were new to working
together.
Our team put in our best effort, we played by the rules and we kept our spirits high. We emerged second in this
competition and we were pretty proud of ourselves. We hope to become champions next time.
On the second day of MSSD at SMK Tambun, the competition consisted of all the winning teams and runners’ up
from the competition held on the previous day. It was based solely on knock out. We came up against one of the
strongest teams, SMJK Ave Maria Convent and it was a close match and we did not give up easily. Eventually, we
lost to them and we wished that we had the chance to play against other teams.
We gained invaluable experience during the competition and had the chance to bond with other teams. We were
lucky we got to play against so many good teams and learned so many new tactics and tricks. We hope to come out
victorious again next year, as a more experienced and stronger team.
U18 Netball reflections by Shing Yee (Year 10 Green)
The U18 team was victorious all the way and got through to the final. We were so excited. We were runners-up in
our zone and we went on to qualify for the district tournament that was held at SMK Tambun the next day. The
playing system for this was via knock-out unlike the zone tournament which was organised as a round robin. This
meant that once a team loses, they were out. We came up against one of the strongest teams in the knock-out who
went on to make the top three. It was great to have qualified for the knock-out round.
We gained a lot of experience and also enhanced our team spirit. We felt fortunate to be able to play against one of
the strongest teams.

Journalism Club
This week, the Secondary Journalism Club members enhanced their interviewing skills by each finding 5 students
to interview about their thoughts of Tenby Schools Ipoh and the School’s Vision. In previous weeks, the members
were taught about the type of questions to use when interviewing and the importance of their body language as an
interviewer. They practised with each other during these sessions so the objective of this activity was to provide
students with the opportunity to apply and practise these skills they have learnt with other students in the School.
