<strong>SCHOTT</strong> SOLUTIONS 1/16 FOCUS FOKUS HOT SPECTACLE Glowing hot, liquid and orange-red like fire – what looks like a lava lake in the midst of a bizarre landscape is actually a molten mixture of raw materials consisting of quartz sand, soda, lime and other admixtures. This is how homogeneous glass is produced in glass melting furnaces made of stone over several days at temperatures in excess of 1400 °C. The melting is followed by versatile shaping of the material: glass can be blown, cast, thrown, rolled, pressed or pulled. Our “hot” picture was taken of a melting tank for ultra-thin glass at the schott site in Grünenplan. < HEISSES SCHAUSPIEL Glühend heiß, flüssig und orangerot wie Feuer - was ausschaut wie ein Lavasee inmitten einer bizarren Landschaft, ist ein aufschmelzendes Rohstoffgemenge aus Quarzsand, Soda, Kalk und weiteren Beimengungen. In steinernen Glasschmelzöfen entsteht so über mehrere Tage bei Temperaturen von mehr als 1400 °C homogenes Glas. Dem Schmelzen schließt sich eine vielseitige Formgebung des Werkstoffs an: Glas kann geblasen, gegossen, geschleudert, gewalzt, gepresst oder gezogen werden.
