The renovation was completed in June 2008 and houses a dental clinic operated by Hill Health Corporation of New Haven. The clinic is named after Richard O. Belden, to honor the late Representative’s dedication and commitment to his Valley constituents. “The conversation to increase the dental clinic’s capacity actually began several years ago with Head Start moms, parents of children with mental retardation and people living with mental illness,” recalls Bob Kilpatrick, director of marketing and public relations for Hill Health Center. “Each was finding it difficult to locate private dental practices in the Valley that would accept Medicaid and HUSKY.” Now, the dental clinic’s ability to deliver services to Valley families of modest means has tripled; a sliding fee schedule has been implemented for those without dental insurance. A good thing for the children living in low-income households who are more likely to suffer tooth decay due to poor nutrition. Increasing dental and behavioral health services to Valley residents The renovation also expanded behavioral health service programs for children offered by the Lower Naugatuck Valley Parent Child Resource Center. “Having additional space at TEAM doubles the size of our intensive outpatient program,” says Michael Wynne, CEO of the Lower Naugatuck Valley Parent Child Resource Center. “It comes at a particularly important time as we have noticed an increase in the number of teens experiencing anxiety and depression over the past few years.” Funding for the expansion project was made possible by the Ross Fletcher and Frank Hegeman Gates Fund which was established in the 1950s by bequests of the two brothers from Derby. The Gates Society at The Foundationʼs affiliate—the Valley Community Foundation—is named to honor Frank & Ross Gates whose bequests have benefited the Valley community in profound ways, including providing core operational support for the Valley Community Foundation. The Gates Society recognizes those individuals who, like the Gates brothers, have included a charitable gift in their estate plans through the Valley Community Foundation.
In addition to the TEAM grant, the Gates Fund generated over $1.1 million in 2007 that supported a wide range of projects benefiting the Valley. Examples include a Youth Golf Program at the Boys & Girls Club, natural history presentations at the Ansonia Nature Center and the implementation of a comprehensive economic development strategy for the region.
