Anne Hope Bennett. Frank and Ross Gates. Stuart Low. Al Johnson and the New Haven Boulé. Bert and Carol
Sacco. Katherine Dana English. These individuals—living at different times, coming from different backgrounds,
having different priorities—shared a commitment to their community of Greater New Haven and the foresight
to know that they could advance their own visions of a better community by creating an endowed fund at
The Community Foundation.
The Alderman and Osterweis families—connected by marriage—have possessed this same commitment and
vision in abundance. For forty years, the generosity of this extended clan has served as a reminder of all that
philanthropy can mean to those who give and to the broader community. Their giving has served both to honor
their departed loved ones and to advance the causes they care about most.
The stories of these individuals and families are set forth in the pages that follow. Taken together, these stories are
about the give and take of community philanthropy; they are about how giving dollars and taking pride in oneʼs
community today translates to giving hope and taking responsibility for our communityʼs tomorrow. And these
stories are about how The Community Foundation, as the communityʼs charitable endowment, has worked with
these people to see that their community aspirations are realized and to grow the funds they have established.
The funds established by these individuals and families are just a few of the many at The Foundation, and the
causes they support only hint at the breadth of organizations receiving Foundation support. This annual report lists
these funds and grantees in full to illustrate both the powerful legacy of giving represented by our almost 700
separate funds and the ways in which those funds remain alive and vibrant today, taking action to enable local
non-profit organizations to meet this communityʼs toughest challenges and seize its most inspiring opportunities.
As The Foundation looks to the end of its eighth decade, we are looking forward. Our resolve is to find new ways
to be of service to donors, to partner with non-profits, to reach out and listen, and to mobilize the community to
focus on its needs and opportunities. As we do so, we are confident that the stories of commitment and foresight
that are this communityʼs proud philanthropic history will be expanded upon, so that in the coming decades our
successors will tell the stories of how this generation too believed in the communityʼs future and built the
communityʼs endowment as an expression of that belief.
