G R A N T T R A I N S T U T O R S T O I M P R O V E S H O C K I N G LY L OW L I T E R A C Y L E V E L S According to Literacy Volunteers of Greater New Haven, more than 270,000 adults in New Haven County are at the two lowest levels of literacy. “Low literacy adults struggle each day with ordinary tasks that you and I might take for granted,” says Doss Venema, the agency’s executive director. Simple tasks like reading a prescription label or paying bills. In addition, adults with low literacy skills make up much of our nation’s prison population. In 2007, The Foundation directed unrestricted dollars to help expand the tutoring-training program at Literacy Volunteers to address this important issue. Support for the grant was provided by the more than 90 unrestricted funds at The Foundation—including the Sacco Family Fund, set up by Carol and Humbert Sacco Jr. more than a decade ago. Literacy Volunteers also benefited from a $3,000 grant from The Foundation’s Community Fund for Women & Girls last year. The Fund was established in 1995 by a woman and has been built by hundreds of gifts since then to its current value of more than $1 million. As part of its activities to Making sure their neighbors can read and write support services for women and girls, it addresses issues of economic security, health, violence, political participation—and education. The Women & Girls’ grant supported The Next Step program helping Latina participants move to a higher level of literacy so that they can give back more as parents, employees and members of their community. The program has three distinct components: group literacy training, family literacy instruction and lifeskills. Among the activities attended by participants were family game nights and informational sessions such as how to navigate the library, how to take charge of household finances, and how to become computer savvy. Through an Unrestricted fund, you can address ever-changing community needs and opportunities—including future issues that often cannot be anticipated at the time your gift is made. Your flexible gift will always be relevant because it is distributed to the community by The Foundation Board after careful evaluation of all aspects of community well-being.
