Focus on Education Help encourage your child to do a little maths practice every day! Getting children excited about maths can be difficult. Getting children to do extra maths outside of the classroom can be an outright battle of wills for parents! But some children really do need that extra bit of help - or even an extra challenge - to push their maths skills onto the next level. Here are our top tips to get your children practising maths outside of the classroom: 1. Numbers are everywhere! For younger children, get them counting whenever you can, whether it’s the birds outside, or measuring out ingredients at home. 2. For older children, get them calculating whenever you can - get them to help figure out the ‘best buy’ in the supermarket. 3. Try online! Children who haven’t responded well to worksheets often respond positively to a website. Exam advice at NumberWorks’n’Words As we march towards the next public exams I am reminded of the difficulties many students face in tailoring an answer to the question given, often a consequence of revision focussed on memory rather than understanding. Then, when a few keywords are spotted in a question, they too readily blindly regurgitate what they have remembered regardless of whether it actually fits the question – too often it doesn’t.
