Making The Anthropocene
&
with
Hermaphrodite Polar Bear, Gary Hume
2003
Flame retardants used on our sofas have been
building up in the tissues of polar bears,
causing severe hormonal disruptions, and
resulting in more and more being born with
genital deformities.
These deformities can then make it
impossible for them to reproduce.
This was the moment I first realised our impact.
It was my wake-up call.
It was my 'Wait, whhhaaaatttt? Something on my furniture is
doing that, thousands of miles away? Why didn't I know? why
don't we all know? And why don't we care?'.

Anthropocene
/ˈanθrəpəˌsiːn/
Anthropocene /ˈanθrəpəˌsiːn/
Geol.
The era of geological time during which
human activity is considered to be the
dominant influence on the environment,
climate, and ecology of the earth.
The Anthropocene is a proposed epoch
that begins when human activities started
to have a significant global impact on
Earth's geology and ecosystems.

Oxfordshire: Welcome to the
Anthropocene
- Why is it interesting?
- Current debate – is ‘a thing’? When did it begin?
- First species to cause such a shift to earth’s system and be aware of it
- brings responsibility & power… ‘Good Anthropocene’ & humanity as a
force for good?
- Is it a useful word?
- Does it help us understand the reach and extent of our impact?
- Will it make the mainstream?
Can it engage and create action, or is it too geeky/overwhelming?
