BEGINNER GUITAR LESSONS Musicians aren’t made over night. It takes practice and a good beginning foundation. Our guitar lessons are geared toward the beginning guitarist, however it is great for anyone to work on those basic skills to enhance their performance. Must bring your own guitar. Make your own laundry products, dishwasher detergent and other household products for pennies to use. We will make from easily available ingredients. Save money and avoid toxic chemicals. Recipes, techniques and some products will be taken home. Register By January 28 Thursday 6:30 – 8:30pm February 4 161110-01 Ages 18+ $25 Plains District Community Center INTRODUCTION TO CONVERSATIONAL SPANISH This is an introductory Spanish course for English speaking students with little or no Spanish background. The emphasis in this course will be on communication and will be taught using a variety of interactive methods. Even though proper pronunciation, grammar usage and vocabulary are very important to excel in speaking, writing and listening is a very important part in the learning process as well. Regular attendance, participation in classroom activities and conversation exercises and weekly independent study to reinforce topics discussed in class are keys to success. This is a 10 week session held on Saturdays. Register By January 26 Saturdays 10am – 12pm February 6 – April 9 161106-01 Ages All $100 Rockingham County Administration Center HEARTSAVER CPR & AED Heartsaver CPR and AED is a classroom and video based instructorled course. This course teaches adult CPR and AED use. All materials are included. You will receive a certification card from the American Heart Association upon completion. Register By February 5 Saturday 8:30 – 11:30am February 20 161135-01 Ages 15+ $50 Plains District Community Center MOTHER-DAUGHTER TEEN DATING SAFETY Today, juveniles are beginning to date as early as their tween years. By the time they reach high school, 1 in 3 teens know a friend or peer who has been physically hurt by a partner. Abuse can be physical, verbal, emotional, or sexual. Bring your daughter to discuss safety with an instructor from the County Sheriff’s Department. Register By February 9 Wednesday 6 – 7pm February 17 181107-01 Ages 11+ FREE Rockingham County Administration Center INTRODUCTION TO NATURAL REMEDIES Come learn which plants have been traditionally used for specific health issues. You will also have the opportunity to make an herbal remedy of your choice. After lunch, learn how to make a lotion bar and a hydrosol/spritzer. At the end of the day, you will have a tincture, a lotion bar and a hydrosol or spritzer to take home. Most importantly, you will have the knowledge to make all of the above for yourself, your family and for gifts! Additional supplies, materials, books may be bought at workshop. Lunch will not be provided, please pack a lunch. Register By February 26 Saturday 10am – 4pm March 5 160411-01 Ages 17+ $62 Grottoes Town Hall Community Room JUMP START THE VEGGIE GARDEN The class will focus on getting vegetable production early in the season. Topics covered will include cold frames, lasagna gardens and square foot gardens. We will also discuss transitioning from early crops into the warm season production of vegetables. Come find out how to grow your own food year-round! GANG AWARENESS SAFETY This program informs parents, teachers, community organizations and other adult groups on what to look for in our children that may indicate their inclination to gang membership. Sheriff’s Department instructors define what gangs are and how they can attract our children. Register By April 12 Wednesday 6 – 7pm April 20 181137-01 Ages 11+ FREE Rockingham County Administration Center HEALING HERBS, WEEDS & WILDFLOWERS Want to try your hand at making natural remedies for what ails you? This workshop starts with an informative talk about native plants and their historical uses for health issues of today. Then, we will visit the herb beds, the fields and the woods to gather some of the plants we have discussed. Back at the studio, while the herbs are drying, you will learn how to make an herbal tincture or poultice, then put that knowledge to work creating your own powerful herbal remedy. A fun and rewarding day! Additional supplies, materials, books may be bought at workshop. We will be meeting in the Grottoes Town Hall parking lot as we will be driving a few minutes away to the woodlands. Carpooling will also be available once everyone arrives. Register By April 18 Saturday 9am – 12:30pm April 23 160411-02 Ages 17+ $48 Grottoes Town Hall parking lot SIMPLE HERBAL REMEDIES Your backyard, the local creek bank and even your spice rack can yield material for making simple effective remedies for aches, pains, fevers and other ailments. Learn to make a simple tincture, salve and balm. We will cover the basics and enough to experiment on your own. Make a salve and lip balm. Register By June 2 Thursday 6:30 – 8:30pm June 9 281125-01 Ages 16+ $25 Plains District Community Center ME & YOU FONDUE Fondue is back big time! Roll up your sleeves and get ready to explore this versatile cooking technique. You will learn how to make and sample two different fondues, from a classic cheese based fondue, to a luscious and sweet chocolate fondue. First we will learn how to prepare a Pear and Brie Cheese Fondue. Those with a sweet tooth won't be left out either; an over-the-top chocolate fondue will end this memorable class of indulgent treats. No matter how busy you are, you can bake delicious homemade breads. Basics for beginners include a sourdough that works well for everyone and takes 5 minutes a day, a potato refrigerator dough that is easy and versatile, plus tips, tricks and foolproof recipes. We will eat what we make!
