Hockey The U13 Hockey Team were undefeated at the area tournament and finished runners up. Congratulations to all the team. Rebecca Chapman, Beth Shaw, Harriet Smith, Alysha Barnes, Megan Green, Chantel Yates, Sadie Soame and Saffron Moore. The U16 Hockey Team have their League Final on 9th March against Wymondham College. Good Luck Girls! Trampolining On Thurs 28th January, 37 Year 10 pupils went to the High Altitude trampoline park in Norwich as a reward for collecting over 220 COPE stamps in the Autumn term. Unfortunately, we were too busy bouncing to get any photos. Table tennis Well done to Connor Andrews, Reanna Cook, Ben Foster and Jack Beaumont from Year 9 and Matthew Burridge from Year 7 who qualified to represent Breckland at table tennis at the Winter School games at the UEA in March. Performing Arts Pineapple Dance Studios and Miss Saigon Theatre Trip 1st February 2016 On the 1st February, 51 students had the opportunity to take part in dance workshops at the famous Pineapple Studios in London. The students were put through their paces by two highly experienced performers from ‘Industry Artists’ who are West End Theatre and Commercial dance artists. Ivan De Freitas, a veteran West End performer put them through their paces in an authentic dance routine from the hit musical ‘Footloose’, whilst Anthony Trahearn taught a commercial dance routine. Ivan has starred in musicals such as ‘Ghost’, ‘Footloose’ and ‘Never Forget’ to name a few, whilst Anthony has an impressive career as a film and backing dancer for artists such as JLS, The Pussycat Dolls and The Saturdays. Wayland Academy students showed the professionals that they have the stamina and grit to match any seasoned performer. Both artists commented they were very impressed at the speed and attitude towards the workshops, outlining the difficulty of the material they were teaching. After these vibrant workshops the students went to the Prince Edward Theatre to watch ‘Miss Saigon’ the highly acclaimed and winner of a record-breaking nine awards including best West End show, best musical revival, best direction and best choreography. It was a fantastic and very enjoyable day. 10
Year 11 Musical Theatre Showcase The current Year 11 students performed their Musical Theatre Showcase to a live audience at Wayland Academy Norfolk. Wayland Academy Norfolk’s Musical Theatre Showcase MONDAY 25TH JANUARY 2016 The showcase is part of their very unique Musical Theatre course, training students to be able to perform in the three disciplines of Musical Theatre: acting, singing and dancing. The night was a performance as well as an assessment and all students demonstrated their ability to perform effectively in a variety of styles. The Musical Theatre course has a strong emphasis on technical training and performance technique. A note of thanks I just wanted to thank you all for making me feel so welcome at Wayland Academy during the rehearsals and Showcase on Monday. I really enjoyed myself and would like to add my congratulations to the whole cast and crew for putting together an awesome evening of entertainment. I, like Mr Coates, have performed all over the world in a huge variety of gigs, shows, festivals and carnivals, possibly the most well known (apart from Wayland Academy obviously) being the Closing Ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games in London, in a stadium full of 90,000 people and an estimated TV audience of 1.5 billion. Performing and playing music has taken me to some places that I never imagined I would ever find myself in and brought me into contact with some of the most amazing people around the Globe. It was fantastic to witness performers take those first steps to… who knows where? It was great to see the realisation dawning that all the hard work, practise, training, rehearsing, sweat, tears, blood, stress and heartache are repaid tenfold through the applause of an appreciative audience and the powerful sense of achievement that it generates. Truly well done to everyone, keep at it, build on what you achieved on Monday and I hope to work with you all again at some point in the future. Hej Jones Musical Director of Norwich Samba… and bass player Easter Workshops The West End comes to Wayland Academy Norfolk! During the second week of the Easter Holiday, five days of professional dance workshops will be held at Wayland Academy led by Industry Artists, professional performers from the West End and Commercial Dance Industry. This amazing experience will run from Monday 4th April to Friday 8th April, 10am to 4pm each day, accumulating in a short evening performance at the Academy on the Friday evening to showcase the work that has been taught.
