PE Department Update Wheelchair tennis A small group of students went to watch the best wheelchair tennis players in the world in the NEC Masters which took place at the Lee Valley Tennis Centre at the Olympic Park in London. While we were there, we briefly met Great Britain’s Gordon Reid, who we watched win his match. Gordon has been playing wheelchair tennis since 2005 after he contracted Transverse Myelitis in 2004. He is a great inspiration to all, young and old. Whilst at the Olympic Park we also had a look inside the Velodrome and the Aquatics Centre which were the centre of much excitement during the 2012 Olympics. A great trip was had by all. South Norfolk Area Netball Tournaments this term Wayland Academy hosted its annual U13s Area Netball Tournament on Thursday 25th February. It was a great turn out with nine teams entering. Wayland Academy played extremely well against some tough opposition. Their commitment to training each week has been evident with the developments they have made as individual players and as a team. Attleborough Academy and Thetford Grammar made it to the final, after 6 minutes they drew 2-2. Due to losing the light and time, the game has been rearranged. Watch this space… The U13s Wayland Academy Netball team are; Lily Scott, Megan Green, Hannah Diaz Ballester, Beth Shaw, Harriet Smith, Georgia Schofield , Rebecca Chapman and Phoebe Tortice. 8
Winter School Games On Tuesday 1st March the PE department took 21 Wayland Academy Norfolk students to the Winter School Games. The event was held at the UEA Sportspark, where Wayland Academy students represented Breckland at the indoor rowing and table tennis finals. The table tennis players consisted of Jack Beaumont 9M, Connor Andrews 9H, Ben Foster 9M, Reanna Cook 9S, and Matthew Burridge 7M. They teamed up with three other students from Thetford Academy to create Breckland A team and Breckland B Team. After letting their nerves get the better of them all students played some fantastic table tennis and managed to gain a few well deserved wins. The final results were Breckland A finishing in 6th place and Breckland B finishing in 8th place. The indoor rowing finals created an electric atmosphere. Students raced individually in their year groups with all spectators watching the races on the big screen. The Wayland Academy (Breckland) rowers were; Year 7: Joshua Peters, George Philips, Ellie Spaul, Sian Lount. Year 8: Wiktor Mejza, Jayden Whitehair, Megan Green, Wiktoria Jankowska, Jaden Whitehair. Year 9: Rodrigo Braz, Jakub Zalensy, Charlotte Ross, Kerris Walpole. Year 10: Jasmin Vincent, Sydney Reardon, Ryan Parodi, Mirosz Nierzwicki. All students worked extremely hard during their individual races and during the team relays they showed superb team work and determination throughout. Although Wayland Academy did not leave the finals with a medal, they did incredibly well to get to the finals and I left a very proud PE teacher. A huge well done to you all! Olivia Baker wins Gold in Judo British School Qualifiers! On Sunday 24th January I represented Wayland Academy at the Eastern Area British Schools Championships which took place at Thetford Leisure Centre. I have attended the Happidojo Judo Club in Marham for the last 4 years and I had to fight an opponent from the same club, as there were no other girls to fight that were in my age and weight group, which is U63kg, Year 10/11. The fight was the best of three rounds and because I won the first two fights I didn’t have to fight her for a third time. In the first fight my opponent tapped out when I got her in a headlock on the ground. The second fight lasted a bit longer; she threw me and I landed on my side but I managed to throw her and hold her down for the count. We both stood up and the referee put his hand above my head to show I was the winner. I won Gold and have now qualified for the British Schools competition in Sheffield on Saturday 2nd April. 9
