About Mercedes-Benz Club of NSW
Dear readers,
As custodians of the Mercedes-
Benz brand in NSW, our Club
is a not for profit organisation
run by enthusiasts for enthusiasts
of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, with
support from dealerships.
The Mercedes-Benz Club of NSW
was founded on January 29th 1972
at East Linfield by a group of nine
enthusiasts sharing a common
interest in this wonderful marque,
and was incorporated under the
NSW Associations Act in 1990.
The first Club event was a picnic
held on a Sunday, 6th February
1972. Our Club is a member of the
Mercedes-Benz Club Management,
established to promote and assist
Mercedes-Benz Clubs globally.
Today, our members and the
Club have grown to include
drive days, social events, tours,
technical workshops, cocktail
functions, dealer events and our
prestige annual Concours d’Elegance
in September.
Our Club members are owners and
admirers of all types of Mercedes-
Benz vehicles, from vintage models
circa 1915, through all the classic
vehicles in the 1940s, 50’s and 60’s
right up to today’s high performance
Mercedes-AMG cars.
As well as running our own NSW
based events, we are involved with
other Mercedes-Benz Clubs across
Australia, holding exciting interstate
tours and events for members.
The Mercedes-Benz Club National
Rally is held in a host capital city
every two years, where interstate
Club members gather for a week of
Mercedes-Benz social, car events,
tours and car displays. This year it
is our turn to host it in Sydney.
Details for our Mercedes-Benz
Clubs 2016 National Rally are on
our website, so please join us for this
great event.
Our website mbcnsw.org.au is
being redesigned to include Classic
and Modern Mercedes-Benz areas,
including Mercedes-AMG. It will
cater for current and new members’
interests, including new events such
as track days for modern vehicles.
We post to facebook.com/
Our Club is a fun, friendly,
knowledgeable and entertaining
place to enjoy together with your
modern or classic Mercedes-Benz.
The Presidents report
Hello from the new President to
our magnificent Mercedes-
Benz Club of NSW as elected at our
last meeting on January 20th. It has
been 14 years since l have written a
Presidents report, so I am delighted
to be the newly elected president
once more and I look forward to
doing a great job for the Club with
the new Executive committee. These
positions are held by:
Vice presidents:
Dennis Dinse & John Assarapin.
Secretary: Ken Pitman
Treasurer: George Timothy
Executive committee:
Mike Fleming, Vince Thompson and
Simon Strauss.
Vince Thompson, our outgoing
president, had the Club at heart
and has worked tirelessly on it for
many years, even hosting Executive
Committee meetings at his home!
Therefore, on behalf of the Club and
myself I would sincerely like to thank
you Vince for your efforts and we
look forward to working with you as
an Executive Committee member to
make the Club better this year.
Another part of the Club needing
attention is the Model Advisers, so l
am pleased to appoint John Linders
to manage this area. He will guide
the group, communicate with Club
Members and work with the events
and social committees.
Over recent years the Club has had
some difficult times which are now
starting to settle. We have different
personalities and no-one is perfect,
so please let us all embrace this and
work together to support our great
Car Club and make it better - as we
are the custodians of the Mercedes-
Benz brand.
Executive Committee
Congratulations to all the duly
elected members filling these
important positions and thank you,
to our club members, for voting
accordingly and to making it a big
night to remember at the Barnwell
Golf Club.
I would like to extend my sincere
thanks to the outgoing Executive
Committee for all their hard work in
keeping the Club in smooth running
order. I must make special mention
of Nick Harris the SGA events
director, who will continue to provide
excellent work on new functions for
2016.
Membership
My pet hate over recent years has
been the low Membership numbers,
so we must all help to improve them
and put the Club back where it was. I
am sure that we all know Mercedes-
Benz owners who are not Club
Members yet, so please join them up
and let us all make them welcome.
All of us need to chip in and take on
a job, however small it may be, this
will help our Club run much better,
without overworking the few who
do this now. Please trust me this is
a rewarding experience and l have
given the Club a lot over the years. In
return I have made many friends, with
a lot of camaraderie with Mercedes-
Benz owners and their cars, which
has been so special. The MBCNSW
is moving forward to aggressively
attract new members and thank Bill
The new Mercedes-AMG S 63 Cabriolet will be featured in the next issue of Star Torque.
4
Greenville for his sterling work over
the past years as Club membership
secretary.
With development plans in progress
for the website, membership will
become an automated online process
this year, with the ability to pay
quarterly by credit card or electronic
funds transfer.
We do need to revise the Club
membership fees however.
Membership dues have not increased
for over four years and during that
time printing costs have increased
considerably. Printing now accounts
for approximately 50% of a single
annual membership fee, for four
magazine issues. This topic will
be reviewed by the Executive and
discussed at the next general meeting
with members.
Website
The new MBCNSW website is
being upgraded. We are creating a
conceptual website first to engage
with dealers to include their
requirements. The modern side of the
new site needs input from digitally
savvy Mercedes-Benz owners with
new cars, and in particular AMG
owners, for suggesting content, ideas
and ways to manage social media
and modern car events. Please
contact A.King to discuss further at:
advertising@mbcnsw.org.au
Star Torque
Our Star Torque magazine is
attracting plenty of good comments
from our audience and advertisers
and we thank Mercedes-Benz
Sydney and Mercedes-Benz Peter
Warren for continuing their support
for the Club with their advertising.
However, Dennis and A.King are
very overstretched to produce this
magazine every quarter and this
cannot continue without help.
We need help from Club members
to step up and provide content for
the magazine. Stories from a while
back or recently will do about your
car/s, experiences (good or bad) with
pictures at decent resolution are
needed – see Star Torque Magazine
section in this issue for how to do
this.
We ask that if there are members
prepared to help produce the
magazine with the necessary
computer skills, please make contact
with Dennis.
National Rally 2016
The national Rally will be held, at
the time this Magazine goes to print,
with Simon Straus at the helm l am
sure it will be a super Rally, so special
thanks goes to Simon and his team.
During the Rally, a Presidents
meeting will be held, where l will
endeavour to cement inter-Club
relations, which have been poor in
recent years.
We do need more help from
members with this major event, so if
you can please volunteer to support
the Club and our visitors by helping
out in many interesting areas, please
contact our National Rally President
Simon Strauss or any of the National
Rally team beforehand.
Mercedes-Benz 300 SL W 198-1 & W 198-II
The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL “Gullwing” - often
referred to as a design icon – stands for elegance
and sportiness like no other car of its time. Even
today, it is considered one of the ultimate dream
cars.
The legendary Gullwing coupé was the first true
sports-car to be developed by Daimler-Benz after the
war. This development was initiated by Max Hoffman,
a US-American citizen of Austrian extraction, who had
been the official importer of Mercedes-Benz cars since
September 1952. For the board of directors of Daimler-
Benz, Hoffman’s plan to sell sports cars with the Mercedes
star on the bonnet was a welcome opportunity to open
the US market for Daimler-Benz and so they were easily
persuaded. In September 1953 the development of two
sports-car models was launched.
At the Geneva Motor Show in March 1957, Mercedes-
Benz presented the roadster version of the 300 SL, as
the successor of the Gullwing coupé. From the start,
Maximilian E. Hoffman had asked for this vehicle for the
US market, since he saw greater chances for an open car
there than for a coupé.
6
Mercedes-Benz 190 SL W 121
In a way that resembled the construction of the 300
SL model, which had been put together from existing
structural components, another sports-type car was
developed on the basis of the 180 model. In contrast to the
famous gull wing-door coupé, the roadster 190 SL was not
designed to be a true sports car, but an elegant and stylish
sporty two seat GT car.
The 190 SL came onto the market in 1955 and 25,881
of the vehicles were produced up to 1963, mostly in left
hand drive for the domestic European and all important
American export markets for Daimler-Benz.
Mercedes-Benz 350-560 SL R 107
In spring 1971, another production sports car was
presented with the Type 350 SL, replacing the 280 SL,
which had been built since January 1968.
Technically, this model was a brand new development
which had almost nothing in common with its predecessor.
However, the same basic components had already been
used in other Mercedes-Benz models: Front and rear wheel
suspension was basically the same as that of the “ Stroke
Eight” models and the V8-engine was a familiar feature
of the saloons, coupés and convertibles of the 280 SE 3.5
Type.
The production of the 300 SL up to the 560 SL ended in
August 1989, more than 18 years after the first 350 SL
was built.
The 107 SL series thus set a record for Mercedes-Benz
that is unlikely to be broken: no other Mercedes-Benz
model series was produced for such a long period. A total
of 237,287 of these cars came out of the Sindelfingen
plant, a figure that demonstrates just how popular the 107
series was.
Mercedes-Benz Pagoda SL W 113
In 1963, the W 113 Mercedes-Benz 230 SL appears with
new and unfamiliar proportions and lines, referred to as
the “Pagoda SL” on account of the characteristic shape
of its hardtop roof. The removable hard top not only
looked good, but its special shape and slightly lowered
middle section increased the stiffness of the roof and thus
enhanced safety. Mercedes-Benz introduced the vertical
main headlights with the 300 SL Roadster in 1957 already,
and continued to use them in later models as well. They
are a typical trademark at the front of the car.
The three SL models that made up the W 113 model
series were each available as a Roadster with folding soft
top, as a sports car with a removable Coupé roof, and in a
further variant that combined the removable Coupé roof
with a Roadster soft top. Production of the W 113 ended in
March 1971 with 48,912 units to its credit.
Mercedes-Benz SL 350 & 500 R 129
The world premiere of the new 129 series SL, in March
1989, was the main attraction at the Geneva Motor Show.
The response was immediately extremely positive – in fact
so positive that the planned annual production capacity of
20,000 units was soon oversubscribed. Anyone wanting to
own an R 129 had to accept a delivery period of several
years in that early phase.
7
8
The new types of 300 SL, 300 SL-24 and 500 SL showed
no common features with their preceding models, except
in their overall concept.
The newly designed electrohydraulic fabric top with
which the SL was equipped as standard offered a
particularly high level of operating convenience. Simply
by operating a switch, the soft top could be opened or
closed within 30 seconds. Perfect operation of the rollover
bar under the closed soft top was guaranteed.
Throughout the years the R 129 became available with
a variety of different engines. The top-of-the-range model
was the 600 SL/SL 600 with V12 engine (290 kW/394 hp,
from June 1993 onwards called the SL 600), which was
launched in October 1992.
Official AMG versions of the SL became available for the
first time and the most powerful engine based on the SL
600, came in the guise of the Mercedes-Benz SL 73 AMG,
rated at 386 kW (525 hp).
engine as the new flagship model.
The SL’s extensive range of standard equipment
included integral leather seats with a memory function
for the electrically adjustable seats and steering wheel,
which were also stored on the electronic ignition key, a
multi-function steering wheel, automatic air conditioning
and stereo car radio.
Mercedes-Benz extensively redesigned the R 230 series
in the spring of 2008. The new generation was introduced
at the International Motor Show in Geneva. The proven SL
350, SL 500 and SL 600 were supplemented with the SL
280 with a 3.0-litre V6 engine, giving the range two sixcylinder
models. The engine in the SL 350 was radically
redesigned. Both engines had the same foundation and
had the same engine model number, M272. The range
also included the very sporty models SL 63 AMG and SL
65 AMG.
The popular R 129 was also the first SL available in
numerous special series. In July 2001, the last of a total
of 204,940 examples of the R 129 model series rolled off
the production line.
Mercedes-Benz SL 350-500 R230
The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class R 230 was presented to the
press in the Deichtorhallen in Hamburg in July 2001. A
unique combination of state-of-the-art electronic chassis
systems guaranteed an exceptional driving experience
and outstanding driving safety. It set tones in sports cars
and automotive engineering.
The redesign of the vehicle’s front end was the most
striking: The new front brought the SL in line with the
brand’s current design and put the focus on the wider and
therefore more prominent radiator grille. A horizontal
louver optically elongated the radiator grille in the width,
emphasizing the power of the SL, giving it a new and yet
surprisingly familiar look.
To mark its 45th birthday in, June 2012, Mercedes-
Benz’s high-performance AMG brand produced the limited
edition SL 65 AMG “45th ANNIVERSARY”. Production of
this special anniversary model V12 roadster was limited
to just 45 vehicles. In 2017, the new SL is born...
At the time of its introduction, the SL 500 was available
with an output of 225 kW (306 hp). In the autumn of 2001,
the SL 55 AMG with a supercharged V8 and an output of
350 kW (476 hp) was added to the range. In 2002, the SL
350 followed with a 180 kW (245 hp) 3.7-litre V6 engine,
and in January 2003 Mercedes-Benz introduced the SL
600 with a 368 kW (500 hp) 5.5-litre V12 twin-turbo
Star Torque is running a series of stories on each marque of the SL. We need members with these vehicles
to write their story to us with high resolution pictures to do this. The W 113 Pagoda SL is next to feature.
ew appearance for an automotive icon: the
beginning of 2016 will see the start of customer
orders for the Mercedes-Benz SL, which will
be available from April 2016, with a host of
significantly enhanced technical and visual features.
More powerful engines, the automatic transmission,
9G-TRONIC, DYNAMIC SELECT with five transmission
modes and Active Body Control, with the curve tilting
function, all take the legend to a new dynamic level.
The high suitability for everyday use has been enhanced
with the vario-roof, which can now be operated at up to 40
km/h, and the automatic boot separator. The aluminium
body shell weighs around 110 kg less than if it had
been produced using steel technology. The aluminium
structure is not only lighter, but also superior in terms of
rigidity, safety and comfort.
A particularly eye-catching feature of the new SL is the
revised front end: the standard, unique diamond radiator
grille extends downwards. Two power domes accentuate
the long, drawn-out bonnet. Adding to the unmistakable
new appearance of the SL is the new standard-fit LED
Intelligent Light System with headlamp housing extending
far to the outside. The sporty silhouette is emphasised by
the enlarged cosmetic air outlets with wing-like chrome
inserts in the dynamic, broad vehicle wings and the
exterior mirrors positioned on the beltline.
The model range now comprises the SL 400 with V6
engine uprated to 270 kW (367 hp) and 500 Nm
(additional 25 kW/35 hp and also 20 Nm) as well as the
SL 500 with the powerful 335 kW (455 hp) V8 engine.
As standard the power transfer is handled by the new
9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission. With
DYNAMIC SELECT the vehicle characteristics can be
adjusted in seconds at the touch of a button, as the system
modifies the setup of the engine, transmission, suspension
and steering at the driver’s behest.
Additional variants include the two Mercedes-AMG
models in the guise of the SL 63 and SL 65, the latter with
a V12 biturbo engine.
Expressive and distinctive: the exterior design
The striking design emphasises the two highperformance
roadsters’ self-assured character. The
front section is totally new and markedly more expressive.
It is characterised by the newly designed twin-blade
radiator grille, which is now wider at the bottom.
The A-wing front apron, the large cooling air intakes
with flics as an additional means of guiding air flows and
the front splitter, emphasise the vehicle’s width. The
newly designed bonnet combines design and function in
the guise of classic power domes and the vents, which are
required for technical reasons.
The apron in a new diffusor look immediately catches
the eye at the rear. All-red tail lights underscore the
stylish character. The side skirts feature a new design
and incorporate different inserts according to the model
concerned - in silver chrome on the SL 63, while the SL
65 is set apart by applications in high-gloss chrome. The
Night package is optionally available for the first time.
The Carbon-Fibre package has been extended to include
inserts in the rear apron and in the side skirts.
Brilliant blue and designo selenite grey magno are
available to choose from by way of new colours, plus the
range of light-alloy wheels in the size 48.3 cm (19 inches)
has also been extended significantly.
New additions include a 10-spoke wheel and a 5-spoke
wheel, both with a high-sheen finish in high-gloss black.
The SL 63 leaves the factory with 10-spoke light-alloy
wheels, painted in titanium grey and with a high-sheen
finish, in size 9 J x 19 with 255/35 R 19 tyres at the front
and in size 10 J x 19 with 285/30 R 19 tyres at the rear.
The SL 65 has multi-spoke ceramic polished forged
wheels as standard. The front wheels are 9 J x 19 with
255/35 R 19 tyres, while the rear wheels in size 10 J x 20
have 285/30 R 20 tyres.
Class materials, comprehensive scope of
standard appointments: the interior
The lavishly appointed interior covers every wish: the
standard scope has sports seats in nappa leather with
optimised lateral support and model-specific upholstery
layout, multi-contour function and heated seats.
The driver has a good grip on the AMG SL at all times
with the 3-spoke Performance steering wheel in black
nappa leather featuring a flattened bottom rim and silvercoloured
aluminium shift paddles. Carbon-fibre trim
and an analog clock in IWC design highlight the highperformance
roadster’s special standing. Optional carbongrain
aluminium trim lends the open-top two-seaters an
even more personal touch.
12
Handling
Active Body Control (ABC) with curve tilting function
reduces body movements when moving off, braking
and cornering. At high speed the SL is automatically
lowered by 13 mm for better aerodynamics. The curve
tilting function applies a maximum of 2.65 degrees 15
to 180 km/h, noticeably reducing the effects of lateral
acceleration on the vehicle occupants.
AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving modes
The five different driving programmes “Comfort”, “Sport”,
“Sport Plus”, “Individual” and “RACE” provide the driver
with broad scope for influencing the characteristics of the
SL 63 and SL 65. Numerous parameters can be modified,
from throttle response to engine sound, enabling the
utmost in individualisation. In the “Comfort” programme
the driver experiences a gentle transmission characteristic
with comfortable and early gear changes.
Features and options for the SL
The PRE-SAFE® Brake detects not only slower-moving,
stopping or stationary vehicles but also pedestrians,
braking autonomously if the driver fails to react.
Active Brake Assist warns the driver of impending crash
situations, provides optimum support, with emergency
braking and will automatically apply the brakes if there is
no driver intervention. It autonomously brakes to reduce
the danger of rear-end collisions.
Active Blind Spot Assist warns the driver when changing
lanes.
Active Lane Keeping Assist detects unintentional lane
changes and pulsates the steering wheel then corrects by
one-sided brake action to guide the vehicle back in lane.
Distance Pilot DISTRONIC and Steering Pilot maintains a
safe distance from the vehicle in front and keeps the car in
the centre of the lane.
The optional Parking Pilot searches for a parking space
and easily parks the car with active steering intervention.
Another option which has been retained is the unique
MAGIC SKY CONTROL, where the panoramic vario-roof
automatically changes from dark to transparent or viceversa
within just a few seconds when closed.
The standard-fit LED Intelligent Light System
automatically adapts to all light and driving conditions.
Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus detects oncoming
vehicles and vehicles in front and adjusts the headlamps
independently to the new traffic conditions. A mechanism
in the headlamp masks a portion of the cone of LED light
to prevent other drivers from being dazzled on full beam.
Connectivity: Mercedes me
The new SL is intelligently networked and “always on”
with the standard-fit communications module (on-board
SIM card) to use the Mercedes me connect services.
With the Remote Online option, navigation destinations
can be sent to the vehicle from any computer or smartphone.
Remote and tracking services include Geofencing, Vehicle
Tracker, Parked Vehicle Locator, Remote Door Locking
and Unlocking and Remote Retrieval of Vehicle Status.
Smartphones are integrated into the vehicle via Apple®
CarPlay® and use voice-operated control for calls,
navigation, music, SMS and emails.
COMAND Online includes internet radio, Spotify and Live
Traffic Information with real-time traffic data for dynamic
route guidance and accurate arrival times.
The optional Harman Kardon® Logic 7® surround sound
system has a 10-channel DSP 600 Watt amplifier and 11
high-performance speakers including Frontbass.
The Mercedes-Benz SL is the top performer in a wide
variety of disciplines: an elegant roadster for relaxed,
comfortable cruising or a dynamic coupé for sporty trips
on winding roads.
T
he development of the
Mercedes-Benz G-Model
commenced in 1972, when
a cooperation agreement was signed
between Daimler-Benz and Steyr-
Daimler-Puch in Graz, Austria.
The decision to start series
production of the G-Class was taken
in 1975. At the same time it was
decided to construct a new plant in
Graz, where the vehicle has been
built, mainly by hand, throughout its
time in production.
There were four model series in
the G-Class. The 460 (from 1979
onwards), 461 (1991) and 463 (1989)
series were produced in Graz, while
the 462 series was assembled from
CKD kits in Thessalonica, Greece,
from 1991; these vehicles were
exclusively intended for the Military
and Police. A small number were
also assembled from CKD kits at the
Mercedes-Benz plant in Aksaray,
Turkey.
Contrary to a widespread view, the
G-Class was neither conceived as a
military vehicle, nor as a passenger
car: the designers initially had their
eyes on the civilian commercial
vehicle market.
There was a change of direction in
the concept phase, however, and the
vehicle was designed for operation
in extremely difficult terrain. The
vehicle’s backbone was a box frame
with enclosed side members and
cross-members, ensuring exceptional
flexural and torsional strength.
The frame carried
robust, rigid axles
with large coil springs
and a long spring travel
– an advantage in offroad
operations. With a
climbing ability of up to
80 per cent, a tilt angle
of up to 54 per cent, a
21 centimetre ground
clearance with angles of
approach and departure
of 36 and 27 degrees
respectively, the
G-Class impeccably mastered even
the most difficult off-road stretches.
At the same time the chassis ensured
safe and comfortable handling
characteristics on the road.
In terms of body design, the
designers and engineers opted in
favour of large surfaces, because
these were cheaper to produce –
particularly in view of the fact that
production was also planned for
countries of the Third World.
At the time, however, the design
came in for severe criticism
for its simplicity. This is seen
Debut: 1979 Mercedes-Benz 280 GE long wheelbase
differently today: precisely because
the appearance of the G-Class is
characterised by it’s great practicality
accompanied by a timeless design,
it has secured it’s place in the
car market as a straight-talking,
uncompromising classic.
15
1992 Mercedes-Benz 350 GD Turbodiesel, short wheel base wagon 1998 Mercedes-Benz G 500, 463 series
The chief designer of the G-Model
was Erich Ledwinka, who had
already gained a good reputation with
the extremely robust, four-wheeldrive
Haflinger all-terrain vehicle
from Austria.
Accordingly the new project was
initially named H2, which stood
for ‘Haflinger 2’. Since this name
was too closely associated with
Steyr-Daimler-Puch, the partners
subsequently changed it to the simple
but memorable ‘G’ for ‘Geländewagen’
(off-road vehicle). At the time nobody
could have predicted that this was
an almost clairvoyant decision with
respect to the current system of
Mercedes-Benz model designations
using just one letter.
The first model, which was
built of wood, was presented
to management in 1973. The first
prototype of metal construction,
powered by a 2.3-litre petrol engine,
was ready in September 1974.
One year later, two further
prototypes followed with short and
long wheelbases. In 1978 a first
prototype designed specifically for
the military, with a fabric roof, a
folding windscreen and removable
doors was presented.
At the time it was assumed that most
of the vehicles would be equipped
in this way, however, the majority
of customers opted for the closed
version, the station wagon.
From the outset, the vehicle could
be ordered with special requests, as
the Mercedes-Benz G had a very wide
range of applications. The designers
were therefore geared toward
providing individualised equipment.
Production of the current
G-Class in Graz commenced on
1 February 1979. Daimler-Benz
provided the entire drive train with
its engine, transmission, axles, and
steering, as well as the larger pressed
components. Stamped and smaller
pressed parts, as well as the transfer
case, were produced by Steyr-
Daimler-Puch.
The range of G-models initially
consisted of the 230 G (four-cylinder
petrol engine, 66 kW/90 hp or 75
kW/102 hp), the 240 GD (fourcylinder
diesel engine, 53 kW/72 hp)
and the 300 GD (five-cylinder diesel
engine, 59 kW/80 hp).
In early 1980 these were followed by
the 280 GE (six-cylinder petrol engine
with fuel injection, 110 kW/150 hp)
in the low-compression version. All
versions had a manual four-speed
transmission and reduction gearing.
The all-wheel drive with an
additional cross-country ratio was
able to be engaged and disengaged
on the move, as were the 100-percent-locking
differential locks on
both rigid axles. The sophisticated
suspension with trailing arms and
transverse links, coil springs and
shock absorbers made for excellent
handling both on and off the road.
Power steering was only available for
the 300 GD and 280 GE as standard.
Civilian customers were able to
order the G as a station wagon
with a short or long wheelbase, or as
a convertible with a short wheelbase.
There was a choice of just five paint
finishes: cream white, wheat yellow,
colorado beige, carmine red and
agave green.
For the Military there was also a
long-wheelbase convertible with two
or four doors. In November 1980, the
range was extended with a closed
box body and either a short or long
wheelbase.
The G-Model was not only popular
with the Military, but also as a
commercial vehicle, as a growing
number of private customers also
came to appreciate this robust offroader.
They expected more comfort
from such a car, however, and this
was provided with the first model
upgrade at the end of 1980.
16
G Classe production
2015 Mercedes-Benz G 500, 463 series
hardtop became available for the
A short-wheelbase convertible, to
make the vehicle more suitable in
winter. The 280 GE and 300 GD were
optionally available with a four-speed
automatic transmission.
Other options included an air
conditioning system, a Webasto
booster heater and Recaro sports seats
and the range of available colours was
expanded to include metallic paint
finishes.
Mercedes-Benz did not neglect
professional off-road drivers during
this model upgrade. They were now
able to specify a cable winch, rifle
racks, 30-litre auxiliary tanks in the
rear wings, a tropical roof for hot
climates, a wash-wipe system for
the rear door, bench seats positioned
lengthwise along the load area and
protective headlamp grilles.
It was possible to order a power takeoff
to drive external equipment, such
as a generator or hydraulic pump.
Another change from December
1981, saw all the closed variants
were equipped with a single rear
door, with twin doors available as an
optional extra. The exact opposite
had been the case hitherto, so the
order intake clearly reflected the
majority opinion and influenced the
specification.
By 1st August 1981, Daimler-Benz
AG was officially the manufacturer of
the G-Model, although it continued to
be commissioned from Steyr-Daimler-
Puch in Graz.
In 1982, the 230 GE replaced the 230
G. The new model had a fuel-injected
petrol engine (92 kW/125 hp) and for
a few markets the 230 G remained
available until 1986 before being
replaced by the 230 GE. The 280 GE
remained in the line-up, initially with
an engine output (114 kW/155 hp),
reduced to 110 kW (150 hp) to cater
for unleaded fuel.
Vehicles were upgraded with new
features, including a smaller, fourspoke
steering wheel, controls and
seats adopted from the Mercedes-
Benz saloons and wide-base tyres
on light-alloy wheels, which were
accommodated within widened wheel
arches.
The image of this robust Mercedes-
Benz off-roader was enhanced by
it’s sporting success. In 1982, for
instance, Jacky Ickx and Claude
Brasseur achieved second place in
the Paris – Dakar Rally in a 280 GE,
while Jean-Pierre Jaussaud took third
place in another 280 GE.
One year later Ickx and Brasseur
won the Rally, the body of their 280
GE having been optimised in the wind
tunnel and made lighter than the series
production version thanks to the use
of a number of aluminium parts. The
engine output was increased to 162
kW (220 hp). In subsequent years
the off-roader enjoyed a succession of
further sporting accolades.
In early 1987, the godfathers of
the G-model began to think about
designing a model series with a
higher specification, named the
463 model series. This move was
necessary, as the now very important
consumer market was demanding the
anti-lock braking system (ABS) and
airbags, which required an extensive
redesign.
Moreover, fewer civilian customers
were smitten by the rustic charm of
a simple hunting cabin on wheels,
therefore more comfort and luxury
was needed. In 1989, the tenth
production anniversary was marked
by a special edition of the 230 GE with
particularly luxurious appointments.
Around 75,000 G-models have been
produced to date.
Development of the model
continued unabated to the present
day. 31 years later, Mercedes-Benz
has equipped this classic off-roader
with the most advanced BlueTEC
technology. BlueTEC developed
by Mercedes-Benz is a technology
17
2016 Mercedes-AMG G65
310 kW AMG biturbo engine
for the reduction of emissions in
diesel vehicles, in particular for the
reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOX).
The BlueTEC version installed in
the G-Class operates with AdBlue®
an aqueous urea solution that is
injected into the exhaust gas stream.
This releases ammonium, which in
the SCR catalytic converter located
downstream, reduces up to 80
per cent of the nitrogen oxides to
harmless nitrogen and water.
As the G-Class is often used in
remote regions of the world,
the engineers designed a simplified
AdBlue refill opening integrated in
the outside tank recess. A full tank
lasts around 12,000 kilometres.
The V6 diesel engine of the G 350
2016 Mercedes-AMG G65
18
BlueTec achieves an output of 155
kW (210 hp) at 3400 rpm, and a
torque of 540 Nm in an engine speed
range from 1600 to 2400 rpm.
With similar output levels as its
predecessor – the G 350 CDI – this
model produces a significantly
lower amount of emissions, falling
below the Euro 5 standard. In
particular, the NOX emissions have
been reduced by around 50 per cent
compared with the former model.
The new 8-cylinder biturbo
powerplant in the G 500 is based
on the new generation of V8 engines
developed by Mercedes-AMG that
have already coaxed exceptional
levels of performance out of the
Mercedes-AMG GT and Mercedes-
AMG C 63. For use in the G-Class,
the V8 has been modified to deliver
310 kW (422 hp) with torque of 610
Nm.
All new Mercedes-Benz G-Class
models offer up to 16 percent more
power and up to 17 percent lower
fuel consumption.
BRABUS OWNERSHIP
S
o what is it like to own a BRABUS?
Truthfully, it is the biggest grin machine anyone
could want and I love it! The BRABUS K8 has the
same footprint as the SL55, with ‘only’ 50 hp more, but
it looks and feels entirely different. The ‘donor’ SL55 is
lowered by 15mm, given a tarmac-sniffing front spoiler,
full aero kit and 20 inch custom wheels with drag strip
tyres. With its highly modified engine, the K8 is an SL55
with an attitude problem.
One of the best features is the amazing sound it makes
when the right foot comes in to play, increasing
in tone and volume from a booming V8 rumble at low
speeds to a thundering roar as the engine is let loose. The
auto industry says that 50% of a car sale to a male is the
sound it makes and this one has it in spades. Only on
rare occasions is there music is in the cockpit, as having
the roof down and listening to the orchestra from the
tailpipes respond to throttle blips and spirited driving
moves is more fun– all within the speed limit of course.
On a recent run with the Ferrari Club it managed to drown
out Lamborghini Aventadors and several modern Ferraris
when going under a bridge.
Around town, the K8 is as docile as the donor car.
Being a fan of planting the pedal occasionally, this
means holding on for dear life (as some of my passengers
will attest), as the K8 turns in to the ultimate fun ride!
Overtaking at any speed is very fast, inspiring maniacal
laughter and although the base SL55 already provides
this, the K8 simply offers more for longer. There are
modifications to the supercharger drive with a custom
vibration damper, a new pulley for
improved belt-drive geometry, high
performance metal catalysts and
an auxiliary circulation pump with
opposing radiator. The BRABUS
supercharged K8 engine is increased
from a standard 476 hp (355 kW) to
550 hp (410 kW) at 6,200 rpm and
maximum torque is 780 Nm (580 lb/ft)
at 3,000 rpm.
The extra shove of the K8 compared
to the SL55 becomes obvious in
a straight-line fight from 60 kmh
upwards. At over two tons, all SL’s
(Sports Light?) have a tendency to turn
a fast corner into a nose first experience
of the electronic driver aids. However,
the BRABUS suspension modifications
and driving practice dramatically
increase cornering confidence with the
K8, as I found out on a track day at ‘the
Farm’ last year. As I am not a racing
driver the top performance range is
likely to remain unexplored and NO, I
have not had it over 200 mph - yet!
This is great and unique Mercedes
supercar to own. Firstly, BRABUS
in Melbourne say this is the only known
K8 SL in Australia, secondly: BRABUS
registration plates amazingly were
available and thirdly, as a supercar the
main parts and panels are all standard
from the R230 SL55. Therefore,
concerns about a side mirror costing
$3,000 (like Lamborghini), are way
less as a readily available Mercedes-
Benz part.
Servicing is done by Alan at
Quixspede in North Sydney. With
his trained Mercedes-Benz mechanics
and genuine diagnostic equipment,
there is nothing they cannot handle
on classic SL’s or modern performance
Mercedes-Benz vehicles.
High performance wheels and tyres
can be trying. The original BRABUS
20 inch Monoblock rims are machined
out of one piece of aircraft grade, G2
aluminium. Consequently, they are
soft and sadly the potholes in NSW have
dented them on several occasions. The
inset picture shows these wheels on
the car and this set has been repaired
for the last time, as their replacement
cost is nearly $10K per wheel! So this
K8 uses a set of forged CV8 Vossen
wheels, which are proving tougher.
The thin performance tyres allow
most road obstacles to be ‘felt’ (even
road paint) and become a possible
damage risk, so the driving style has
to be adapted to actively search for
potholes, stones and other obstacles.
Michelins on the front are great, but 20
x 11 rear tyres in Sydney are rare.
Would I change anything? Nah.
This is a genuine factory K8,
Nav, Climate control, Distronic Cruise
control, Electric heated memory
T
he first 2016 Mercedes AMG
GT3 to arrive in Australia
was unveiled at the Liqui-
Moly Bathurst 12 Hour.
Undertaking the honours were Jochen
Bitzer from Mercedes-AMG Customer
Sport and previous Liqui-Moly Bathurst
12 Hour winners Bernd Schneider and
Thomas Jaeger - both instrumental in
the development of the car.
Peter Hackett from the Mercedes-
Benz Driving Academy, unveiled the
GT3 this weekend, ahead of the car’s
track debut for the start of the 2016
GT Championship at the Clipsal 500 in
March. “To be able to launch this car at
the 12 hour is a fantastic opportunity.
We’re going to see a lot of interaction
with the GT3 and the Australian and
New Zealand public over the next five
to seven years.” said Hackett.
While fans may notice some
similarities between the GT3 and
previous iterations of the SLS, the GT3
is essentially a brand new car based on
the Mercedes-AMG GT.
Powerful acceleration is ensured
by the seasoned and now further
enhanced AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine
taken from the SLS AMG GT3. Userfriendly
technology, excellent
reliability, long maintenance intervals
and the high-revving naturally
aspirated engine with low running
costs made it the engine of choice for
the new AMG customer sports model.
The car has undergone extensive
testing: clocking up 35,000 test
kilometres, a 30 hour test and tackling
three test races at the Nürburgring.
In its first endurance at the Dubai 24
Hours in January, the AMG Team: Black
Falcon, demonstrated that the GT3 has
what it takes to be a serious contender
in the GT circuit, with a second place
finish after a tumultuous race.
Now that the car has proven
itself, the biggest challenge for
Mercedes-AMG is to keep up with
customer orders. “The demand is a
lot higher than expected so production
is running at maximum capacity and
we hope to deliver as many cars as
possible,” said Bitzer, the Head of
Mercedes-AMG Customer Sport.
Even at a standstill, the new
Mercedes-AMG GT3 is the embodiment
of undiluted power.
28
The matt paint in designo selenite
grey magno, covers the muscular
contours like a second skin.
The widened vehicle body, the large
air intakes, the diffuser and the huge
rear aerofoil all signalise a desire
to attack. Every modification to the
bodywork has been made for the
purpose of maximising power output
and aerodynamic performance.
The structure of the GT3 consists
of a very lightweight, yet extremely
rigid aluminium spaceframe, offering
outstanding protection for the driver.
The driver is further protected by the
resilient carbon-fibre seat pan and
an integral roll-over cage made from
high-tensile steel. In order to reduce
the vehicle’s weight further still, the
engine cover, doors, front wing, front
and rear aprons, sidewalls, side skirts,
diffuser, boot lid and rear aerofoil
are all made from a particularly
lightweight, yet high-strength carbonfibre.
Fans will see the AMG GT3 at
Mount Panorama when it is
eligible for the 12-Hour next year.
Back to the Future?
by A.King, & post on 300sl.org
photos Daimler AG
There is an uncanny
resemblance of the
Mercedes-AMG GT3 to the
original Mercedes-Benz 300
SL racer, and in particular the front
grille detail.
So how close are both these cars
in relation to their respective state
of the art in 1952 and now in 2016,
nearly 64 years apart?
Aside from the many mechanical
advances over this period,
aerodynamics was in it’s infancy in
the 1950’s compared to today, where
fins were still commonplace on many
American cars of the time!
Mercedes-Benz returned to
international motorsport
in 1952 with the 300 SL racing
sports car (model series W 194). A
lightweight space frame forms the
basis of this sports car over which a
light alloy body made of aluminium/
magnesium sheet metal elegantly
curves.
Because the space frame sits
comparatively high at the sides, it
was not possible to fit the W 194 with
conventional doors, which is how
the racing sports car comes to have
the distinctive, upwardly opening
gullwing doors. These became the
iconic feature for the production
model 300 SL sports car (W 198-I) in
1954.
The W 194 is powered by a 175 hp
(129 kW) M 194 six-cylinder in-line
engine with a displacement of 2996
cc.
The 300 SL made its racing debut in
May 1952 at the Mille Miglia, having
been unveiled for the first time in
March.
Some of the W 194’s greatest
successes in the 1952 racing season
were a threefold victory in the Prix
de Berne race, double victories in the
24 Hours of Le Mans and the third
Carrera Panamericana and victory in
the Nürburgring Anniversary Sports
Car Grand Prix.
New cars are constant objects
of study in the wind tunnel.
They are subjected to tests
in order to optimise them in
different ways – for example, to reduce
fuel consumption, but also to improve
wind noise or splash water flow.
Historical vehicles, on the other
hand, are seldom guests in the wind
tunnel, for their development has
long since finished and the values
measured in the wind tunnel are not
always available for them.
For historical interest, in January
2012 Mercedes-Benz Classic
examined two SL model series in the
Company’s own wind tunnel at its
Stuttgart-Untertürkheim plant using
modern-day measuring methods.
The first SL (W 194 series) from
1952 and the 1954 series-production
300 SL (W 198-I series) sports car.
The comparison vehicle, was a 1951
Mercedes-Benz 300 S (W 188 series),
a luxurious, sporty touring car which
lent some of its technology to the first
post-war Mercedes-Benz sports car.
The results: the 300 SL (W 194
series) racing car has a drag
coefficient Cd = 0.376
W 194 300 SL
W 198-1 300 SL
The first values measured for the 300
S reveal an average drag coefficient of
Cd = 0.468 at a blown wind speed of
130 km/h and Cd = 0.482 at 200 km/h.
By comparison: the 190 SL (W 121
series), which appeared in 1955 (four
years after the 300 S), achieves a drag
coefficient Cd of 0.461 with a hard top,
while the 1963 Mercedes-Benz 230 SL
(W 113 series), the famous “Pagoda”,
has a drag coefficient Cd of 0.515.
This shows the Mercedes-Benz 300 S
in a very good light indeed.
The 300 SL (W 914) is aerodynamically
around 20 per cent better than the 300
S and depending upon wind speed up
to 37 per cent better.
This result underscores the efforts
of the engineers and designers back
then to attain a low drag coefficient as
an important prerequisite for the SL’s
racing success.
30
W 194 300 SL & W 188 300 S
Wind tunnel measurements of the
series-production 300 SL (W 198-I
series) held a surprise. The Cd values
returned were 0.389 and 0.397, at
wind speeds of 130 km/h and 200
km/h.
The tests revealed that the two SL
models generate a particularly strong
lift at the front axle that increases at
higher speeds, which in turn makes
the cars susceptible to side winds.
Mercedes-Benz is famous for their
wind tunnel testing, and make
no exceptions today with their current
range of aerodynamic vehicles.
The Mercedes-Benz B-Class has a
drag coefficient of 0.26.
The Mercedes-Benz S-Class spent
time in the wind tunnel testing for
one reason: silence, plus a low drag
coefficient of 0.24.
The Mercedes-Benz C-Class sports
also has a drag coefficient of 0.24.
The Mercedes-Benz CLA sedan has a
Cd of just 0.23 and the Mercedes-Benz
CLA 180 delivers a Cd of just 0.22!

ATHRILLING Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour has ended
with McLaren drivers: Shane van Gisbergen, Alvaro
Parente and Jonathan Webb spectacularly taking
victory in another tense finish at Mount Panorama.
Kiwi superstar Shane van Gisbergen held out a fast-finishing
Katsumasa Chiyo in the Nissan GT-R to record the first win for
McLaren at Mount Panorama, after a day of high drama that
claimed several leading contenders early in the race.
The final winning margin was just 1.2 seconds after the
Japanese superstar stormed home in the closing laps, only to
fall just short of defending Nissan’s 2015 win.
The McLaren victory came despite 13 visits to pit lane, a
drive-through penalty and even a brief moment when the car
stopped on track exiting the final corner – Portuguese driver
Alvaro Parente forced to re-set the car on the track before
resuming.
The team’s chances took a blow when van Gisbergen was
issued a drive-through penalty for pit lane speeding when
he began his final stint, however well-timed Safety Cars and
savvy strategy from the TEKNO team returned the No. 59 car
to the front.
Van Gisbergen also recorded a new outright lap record of the
Bathurst circuit at 2m01.567s – the fastest ever recorded
in a race at the famous circuit.
Today’s result was the first notable success for the McLaren
brand at Mount Panorama since Neil Allen set a longstanding
Bathurst lap record (2m09.7) in a McLaren M10 F5000 openwheeler
46 years ago, one that would stand until the early
2000s.
Nissan drivers and defending winners Chiyo, Rick Kelly
and Florian Strauss finished second ahead of Bentley Team
M-Sport’s Matt Bell, Steven Kane and Guy Smith, who finished
third.
The Bentley team’s result was especially satisfying given
31
they were knocked out of a potential podium result in
the last corner of the 2015 race.
For the second year running, five brands finished
in the top five with the Phoenix Racing Audi R8
finishing fourth and the Erebus Motorsport SLS AMG
GT3 fifth in it’s Bathurst swansong.
A highly competitive race was contested over a racerecord
297 laps (1,845km) and featured a race-record
29 lead changes across its duration.
13 Safety Car interruptions for a total of 40 laps
broke up the race, however, lengthy periods of greenflag
running allowed for teams to experiment with
race strategy, setting up the thrilling finish between
the competing brands.
The race was in the balance through to the closing
stages, with a round of pit stops at the top of the final
hour setting up the closing sprint to the flag.
Mount Panorama claimed several leading contenders
early with Nick Percat (Lamborghini) and Mika
Salo (Ferrari) clashing on the opening lap at turn
two. The Lamborghini was out instantly while the
2014-winning Ferrari was later parked after 63 laps
with unrepairable damage.
20 cars finished the race with key contenders from
Jamec-Pem Racing and Objective Racing out of the
race early after striking dramas – the Jamec Audi with
a tyre failure and the Objective Racing McLaren after
contact with the wall at the dipper after just two hours.
dominant performance from the Grove Racing
A Porsche 997 GT3 Cup Car saw the Melbourne-
32
ased team win the Rydges Class B battle in dominant
fashion.
The Grove Porsche, shared by reigning LeMans winner
Earl Bamber, V8 ace Scott McLaughlin and car owner
Stephen Grove, started slowly but surged to the class
lead early in the morning and was never headed –
ultimately winning their class by a mammoth 15 laps.
Second in class was the Safe-T-Stop Porsche driven by
Richard Gartner, Aaron Zerefos and Indiran Padayachee.
All-Aussie team MARC Cars Australia completed a
1-2-3 sweep of the BM Pro Invitational class with Aaron
Seton – son of Glenn Seton – teaming with Jake Camilleri
and Morgan Haber to win the class by nine laps.
Tony Alford, Mark Griffith and Beric Lynton finished
second and Mick Benton, Hadrian Morall and Angus
Kennard third.
A record three-day crowd of 37,079 attended the 2016
event, up approximately 15% from last year.
In addition to the main race, the Ferrari Club turned
up on both Friday and Saturday for 30 minutes track
time at the end of practice. Spectators were treated to
many different models and their drivers enjoying this
opportunity.
A side trip to Sofala (the oldest mining town in
Australia) was great fun as a passenger in a Ferrari
California, as part of a cavalcade of supercars enjoying
the wonderful roads around the area. An AMG C63 and
S63 were part of this spirited driving group!
Be sure you make it next year, it will only get bigger
and better!
D G
In December, I went to Melbourne to inspect a vehicle
bought from Dutton Garage and happily visited their new
showroom on Madden Grove in Richmond, right next door
to Mercedes-Benz Toorak.
To say Dutton has a showroom is an understatement. It
is more like an ultimate gathering of classic, historic and
new supercars in a beautifully crafted motor enthusiast’s
environment, where no detail has been missed and upon
entry – is simply breathtaking!
Two heavy iron entry doors yawn open to a welcoming
hardwood fl oor with two Shelby Cobras facing each other.
Beyond them is a 1968 Ford GT40 in front of a full size
‘construction kit’ on the wall of an Aston Martin DBR1. The
foyer leads to the main rectangular showroom, where a line-up
of four Lamborghinis and two Ferrari F50s meet your gaze.
In front of these cars, Jeff Dutton’s period style offi ce gives
way to display cases filled with rare collectibles and curiosities
from the motoring world.
These in turn blend into a quality café together with the
actual wheel from Donald Campbell’s Bluebird, which ran at
644.5 kmh/(404 mph) on Lake Eyre, Australia in 1964. The
café looks across two rows of supercars that run the entire
length of the building, which is roughly 80 metres (270 feet)!
Customers absorb the ambience, while enjoying great food
and coffee and looking at this amazing sight of Lamborghini
Countachs, one of four Lamborghini Miuras (one belonging
34
y A.King & Duon
to 1960s model Twiggy), classic and modern Ferraris, an
800hp Gemballa Porsche, a silver Mercedes-AMG SLS
and a Concours, red, Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing
among others!
The main driveway ramp terminates in an annex level to
the main showroom. A changing selection of classic and
modern supercars park there – basking in front of a Martini
Porsche 917 – hanging on the wall!
The showroom widens to four rows of cars from Jaguar
XK120s, to a row of Porsche 911s, modern Ferraris, a
classic Daytona 365 GTB/4 Daytona racer and more!
THE BUSINESS
Dutton is a name synonymous with the Australian
transportation industry since 1911.
Back then Jeff Dutton’s grandfather, Albert, built horse-drawn
carriages, but it was in 1953/4 when the business became
Porsche’s authorised repair agents that the Dutton name became
a permanent fi xture in the enthusiast market and Jeff joined the
family business in 1965. “We did the Porsche work until 1970, but
my mechanical apprenticeship was served working on Ferraris
and Lancias, doing pre-delivery work for WH Lowe, who were the
importers at the time”, explained Jeff.
From 1970, Dutton was also the Citroen distributor before
the business was sold in 1989 and Jeff then set up on his own,
solidifying his reputation as an astute player in the classic and
race car marketplaces with distributorships for Lamborghini,
Lotus, Aston Martin, AC, TVR and Caterham.
Although traditionally known as a classic-era dealer, Dutton
Garage has now embraced the 1980s and early 1990s as key
sources of business. “It’s a generational thing. Guys in their 40s
today grew up idolising Lamborghinis, Porsches and Ferraris of
that era. They had the poster on the wall, they’ve had a good 10
years of business and now they are after realising their childhood.”
In 2012, Gavin Fernandez and George Nakas, acquired ‘Dutton
Sporting Cars’ and evolved the company into the diverse business
it is today. “The three-floor showroom holds 150 vehicles and we
sell up to 40 significant vehicles per month through the showroom,
where there is currently in excess of $30 million of stock on the
fl oor” explains Dutton.
Dutton is the largest Australian car wholesaler with more than
40 buyers nationwide, purchasing and exceeding 10,000 sold
vehicles last fi nancial year in both the retail and wholesale space
– with plans to grow that to 15,000 cars soon. The business is
managed and run by car experts and motoring enthusiasts rather
than salespeople, and with their immense buying power, any car
anywhere in the world can be bought and priced aggressively
for sale.
THE SHOWROOM
These dream cars, collected from all over the world, are
masterpieces available to both international buyers and
national car lovers. As masterpieces, they deserve a gallery
rather than a showroom, which is what they have.
The Dutton Garage showroom is set to become an iconic
Melbourne building. Designed by the world-renowned architect
Karl Fender, the 3,678 sq ft building holds the largest array of
rare and collectible cars in Australia. Just like the car stock, it
effortlessly combines the best of the old with the startling new
across four floors and here are some of the ways it achieves this:
The existing industrial roof and fl oor structures were exposed,
with all service runs celebrated, to create a robust backdrop
that contrasted with the luxury cars’ graceful profi les. A sense
of theatre was created by the integration of salvaged cast iron
fl uted columns from Melbourne’s Myer Emporium building and
the windows were salvaged from the Old Members Grandstand
of the MCG and incorporated in to the building.
36
RESTORATION & RACE
The Dutton Garage name has been synonymous with the
Australian racing community for over 60 years. With roots
in the Australian Grand Prix and classic car racing dating
back to the 1930s, Dutton Garage has carried on the traditions
with a fully equipped race workshop, the only one of its kind
in Australia, offering complete restoration and preparation of
modern and historic race cars.
Featuring complete in-house engine and gearbox rebuilding
facilities, the state of the art workshop manages all stages of the
preparation and restoration process in one place. Fabrication
services include MIG and TIG welding along with machine shop
facilities including lathes, milling machines and grinders.
The Dutton Garage workshop is headed by Ben Henson
who brings with him 25 years’ experience in various forms of
motorsport including modern GT, sports cars, F1 and many
historic categories from across Europe, USA and Australia. Ben’s
passion for race cars started as a young boy, when he began
racing cars at the tender age of eight.
Having a love of all things race cars, Ben began his mechanical
apprenticeship at 15 years of age. It was during these formative
years that a privateer, March F1 team, saw his talents and offered
him a position as a junior racing engineer. His new position
gave Ben the opportunity to travel the globe extensively with
the F1 team.
This led to Ben gaining an invaluable understanding of motor
racing, which has been the catalyst in his long and successful
career, as one of the most renowned historical racing car
specialist in the world.
Ben has race prepared winning cars in world famous events
as Goodwood, Laguna Seca, Spa and Le Mans. Ben also has a
passion for restoring historic race cars. He has completed over
twenty world-renowned restorations in his career.
North Head Club drive day
by D.Dinse
photos: M Hertz, D.Dinse
& heritage@nsw.gov.au
It was the last Day of January and
my first Club Drive Day of 2016.
Scott (Lofty) Robertson called
me earlier in the week to ask me
if I was going on the Bella Vista Drive
to North Head. As the weather had
been so unpredictable, I wasn’t sure,
as my W107 does not like to go out in
the rain.
I woke to a huge fog in my area,
which gives you a heads up that it
promised to be a great day as far as
the weather was concerned. So I
headed over to see Scott, meeting him
at 8.00am and decided to sit in the
passenger seat of his stunning 560
SEC 1987 W126.
As we both live on the South side,
we decided to skip the designated
starting point at Thornleigh, where
sixteen Club members had mustered.
Instead we headed over the Harbour
Bridge up Military Road and over Spit
Bridge, then across to Manly taking
the road up to North Head finding
eight members who had already
gathered at the Bella Vista Café.
On the road up, we passed a NSW
Police training facility and the
Quarantine Station, which was the
site for sufferers of Spanish Flu early
last century! An ideal destination for
ghost tours one evening for the Club
perhaps, according to the rumours…
The North Head reserve has a sizable
population of Bandicoots too, who are
not known for their road sense, so we
had to be alert for these small furry
critters around this part of the world.
A total of twenty six members
turned up with their Mercedes-Benz
for breakfast and socialising at the
café.
The Bella Vista café is situated just
outside the former North Head
Army Barracks, where visitors can
take tours around the Barracks and
through the many tunnels located
around the headland. Search: ‘north
head sanctuary’ for more information.
This is one of the many areas around
Sydney where surprisingly few
of the members had never been to.
North Head provides some of the best
views of Sydney harbour to be found
anywhere. From the horizon and
across the water to Watsons Bay and
on to the city, the views are nothing
short of stunning. The harbour is
populated with many weekend sailing
boats of various sizes, as well as the
odd ferry ploughing through the swell
between the heads as they slow for
the Manly pier.
After the recent Sydney storms
and the torrential rain we have been
having recently, Sunday turned out to
be a glorious day. Everyone enjoyed
this bright friendly location, the great
food and interesting conversation.
Well done to Mark Hertz for
organising this drive day (and the
weather) and we look forward to more
events he is organising for 2016.
Please support your Mercedes-Benz
Club by seeing you at the next event!
Robertson Club drive day
capacity. Were they wishing us a safe journey or were
they just celebrating that the Club finally packed up
their cars and were heading south?
Minor roadwork slowed the trip to the Sublime Point
lookout, where tourists gathered around the 22 cars,
with questions being fired off in all directions as to what
models, age and the driving style of each car.
While drizzling rain may have dampened
most people’s thoughts of an early rising
on Sunday 21st, not so for the thirty odd
people who braved the weather, for the run
to Robertson. We had a great and varied turnout of classic
and modern Club cars, many of them Mercedes-AMGs.
Driving away from the Kenthurst Gallery car park the bells
of the Orthodox Church next door were ringing to their full
Refreshed and watered, we headed south west to
join the mountain climb along Jamberoo Mountain
Road, turning off for another Tea break at Illawarra Fly
Treetop Walk.
Being Mercedes-Benz drivers we all decided against
the walk and drove instead, so we headed back onto
Jamberoo Mountain Road which was as damp as one
can imagine. Opening the windows felt as if the clouds
had come down to meet us. Driving lights went on for
the Mountain Climb and with one final wall of fog on
the road, we arrived bang outside the famous Robertson
Pie Shop.
Robertson is a large village in the Southern Highlands
in Wingecarribee Shire. The town is located on the
edge of the Illawarra escarpment, about 35 km from the
coast.
It is known for its high annual rainfall with fertile soil
and was previously covered by an extensive temperate
rainforest, most of which has been cleared for farming,
though remnants such as Robertson Nature Reserve
still exist today. The town is colloquially known as
“Robbo” by the 2,000 or so locals.
The town was once famous for cheese production and
the remnants of the industry are seen with one of the
old cheese factories remaining, now converted into a
commercial row of shops.
Robertson is now more widely known for potato
growing and is the home of the “Big Potato” and is also
where the charming 1995 movie “Babe” was filmed.
The town is named after former Premier of NSW Sir
John Robertson, whose 1861 Land Act cleared the way
for the establishment of the town, which was previously
called Yarrawa Bush.
At the Robertson Inn, we found the MG car club also
having lunch, so I am sure we made more noise
than they did. The staff at The Inn provided a wonderful
welcome and allowed us the opportunity to indulge
ourselves to our hearts content.
Return directions to Sydney followed lunch and as
drivers readied their cars, horns were tooting at this
writer, who stood in the doorway waving goodbye to all
and sundry, as I was staying that night at the Inn.
Club Christmas picnic 2015
by J.Assarapin
photos: Members
The Last event of our social
calendar is the Christmas
picnic.
Over the years picnics have
been held at different areas such as
Bobbin Head and The Royal National
Park Audley. This year it was held at
the Lane Cove National Park, at the
Casuarina Point, a venue members were
very happy with.
Lane Cove National Park is a beautiful
pocket of bushland that sits on either
side of the peaceful Lane Cove River
and it is home to many native trees
and birds. The location is within easy
reach for Sydneysiders, extending from
East Ryde to Pennant Hills and West
Chatswood.
After entering the park and paying the
nominal fee, we followed the winding
road to Casuarina Point.
This charming sheltered picnic area
is nestled against the riverbank and
has both picnic tables and barbeques,
making it a great place to while away
an afternoon with the family and fellow
Club members.
This lovely bushland setting is a great
spot for birdwatching along Lane Cove
River with Lorikeets and Kookaburras,
plus plenty of opportunities to see water
dragons.
Although this was a self-catering
event, some members had organised
themselves to share their food with
all. Eros and Maria Lazzarro brought
Antipasto platters, Anna Harris
organised the meats, while barbeque
master Jim Kofinas transported his
whole charcoal grille for the day.
We arrived around 10.00 am to find
Jim and his wife Kathy setting
up the barbeque, as well as Jenny and
Mike Fleming, who had arrived in their
yellow Mercedes-Benz 450 SLC.
Charlie Mansour greeted us from his
red 350 SL and helped set up our Club
flags to mark our area.
Ben de Boer appeared in his stunning
blue W111 coupe and Vince Thompson
in his E class Cabriolet.
A range of Club cars filled the parking
area. Mark Hertz had his 450 SLC,
Horst Shurger in his CLS 63 shooting
break and Rena and Nick Nickola in
their new CLK350. Bob Thomsen and
Eros Lazzarro had their W113 Pagodas
and Greg and Anette Vains brought
their 450 SLC.
Soon the barbeque was fired up with
Jim in charge. With help from Luke
and Anna they were soon serving an
amazing array of barbequed skewers
and Cypriot sausages. Champagne
corks popped and the MBCNSW
Christmas party was under way!
The ladies organised everything
beautifully, so our thanks to them
for providing us with delicious fruit,
desserts and coffee. Our members were
lively and fun but all too soon it was after
4.00 pm and we had to start packing up.
The annual Club picnic is a relaxing,
easy-going fun event, so if you can
attend in 2016 the same venue is
already booked... just bring a friend,
food and drink.
Editorial license & new members
Welcome once again to another issue of Star Torque (issue #243). By the
time you get to read this article you would have cast your eyes over a
number of first class stories about Mercedes-Benz, our Club and our members.
In the last magazine we covered the 60th anniversary of the Mercedes-Benz
190 SL, and Club stories were compiled by Simon Strauss. He contacted
various owners and got a little the history of their cars from them. Such details
as: where it was bought, how they found the car, what condition it was in, what
has since been done to it and what memorable events have happened with it,
etc. The theme here is not only about the car, it’s about the people who own
and drive these wonderful Mercedes-Benz vehicles.
I hope that you are all very proud of our Club magazine and the way that it has
evolved recently. The magazine is pulled together by a couple of enthusiastic
volunteers, who work tirelessly to get this to your mail box, four times a
year. Feedback has been excellent on Star Torque and the editorial team will
endeavour to keep the magazine going - but we need your help!
In order to continue the quality of our Star Torque magazine, we need Club
members to contribute and become part of the editorial team. At present we
are under-resourced and under enormous pressure each issue to find good
stories, content, high resolution images (that we are allowed to use) and laying
out the magazine for production. If you can spare a little time and have skills
to help us with writing, providing story content and magazine layout (using
InDesign), then please contact me.
The latest issue you will notice is perfect bound, meaning the pages are
glued into the cover, like regular magazines from a newsagent. We have
moved away from a saddle stitch magazine (staples in the fold) to move to a
higher volume production method and a better quality product for members in
anticipation of increasing membership numbers soon and I am sure you will
appreciate this new format.
We need to keep the Club and the magazine going by covering print costs and
Club expenses, which have all increased over several years. The executive
committee is discussing a proposed increase to membership fees, which have
not changed in four years. The figure being discussed is around $1 per month
added to the $7 per month members pay now. Any increase will not happen
until July 1, the start of the Club financial year. We hope members appreciate
the absolute necessity of any proposed increase to maintain Club operations,
as the National Rally costs will leave us with low cash reserves. Online
membership renewals with quarterly payments will be an option by then.
The Club needs volunteers to help it continue to operate. Management of
advertising, membership, tech days, events and coming up with good ideas
that will interest members is required, so we need Club members working
together as a team to make this happen. So please become involved with the
Club and be part of the MBCNSW team.
We promote our Club “For the benefit of its members” and your contributions
are needed and are welcome. As Executive Club member John Assarapin says:
“We are the Custodians of the Brand”, so let us all be involved and keep the
Club and the brand going.
My special thanks again go to A.King, Simon, Rena and Shane for their efforts
with this issue of Star Torque #243.
Conditional Registration scheme
As most members will be aware,
the MBCNSW runs a Conditional
Registration System with the Road &
Maritime Services (RMS).
The Historic Plate System introduced
by the RMS allows for conditional
registration of historic vehicles over
30 years old to be driven within car
Clubs across NSW.
When your RMS registration
form arrives, complete and send
with a SAE to: Mr Ben de Boer,
MBCNSW Registrar, 11 Empire Bay
Drive, Daley’s Point, 2257. Your
Membership details will be verified
as current and the form will be
signed, stamped and returned to you.
Other registrars are Greg
Drakopoulos 0407 626 64 and Grant
Karsten 0418 457 997, who can also
sign and stamp your declaration.
Registration
The RMS forms require
countersigning by the Mercedes-Benz
Club of NSW Inc. to verify current
membership and authenticity of
your vehicle. Completed forms with
the pink slip and payment for your
registration need to be made to RMS.
Compliance
The RMS requires a Certificate
of Approved Operations, issued at
registration to be carried at all times
in the vehicle. Document your Club
runs and events to prove legitimate
vehicle usage under this scheme.
Membership
Current membership is required to
comply with these RMS requirements.
If your membership lapses, the
conditional registration will be
rescinded and/or renewal refused.
Your vehicle will NOT be registered
for driving on public roads and your
insurances for Compulsory and/or
Third party and personal use in these
circumstances become VOID
Club Conditions
All historic plated cars
must aend at least three
events or meengs per
calendar year, including the
Concours d’Elegance.
The Mercedes-Benz Club
of NSW has over 120
vehicles registered, with too
few aending events.
This contravenes the scheme
as Historic plated cars must
be used and displayed. Your
historic plate registraon may
not be be renewed if this Club
requirement is not met.
