Tertiary Contribution Significant to the Sport & Recreation Sector in Auckland
14
There are many factors behind
Auckland being a thriving region
for sport and recreation, some of
which are geographic or national,
however one often overlooked
contribution to sport and
recreation in Auckland is its tertiary
institutions.
A recent study undertaken by
the Tertiary Advisory Group (TAG)
to Aktive has calculated the
tertiary sector’s value to sport and
recreation in Auckland. This covers
everything from contribution in
terms of numbers of sport and
recreation staff and students, to
facilities, to research.
The financial picture revealed a
substantial contribution across the
five Tertiary Institutions, with annual
institutional turnover totalling 1.4
billion dollars. Sport and recreation/
physical education department
turnover totalled approximately
18.3 million, and net facility
asset totalled 105 million dollars
(including 4.2 million annual facility
turnover).
Insights revealed a large student
population (115,000) across the five
institutions in Auckland. Of this,
2,300 students are studying sport
and recreation/physical education
across 37 different undergraduate
and postgraduate qualifications. A
total of 11,000 staff are employed
across the five institutions with
approximately 176 dedicated
to sport and recreation/physical
education activity. Approximately
600 students are in sport and
recreation/PE related placements
within the Auckland sector, and a
total of 350 external relationships
with sport and recreation/physical
education related organisations.
Of these, approximately 68 are
international.
According to Sarah Sandley,
CEO Aktive, “the numbers are
staggering in terms of what the
tertiary sector is contributing to
sport and recreation in Auckland.
For sports sector practitioners
and leaders, it provides an entry
point to see the possibilities of
collaborating with the tertiary
sector to further enhance a thriving
sport and recreation sector in
Auckland and create the world’s
most active city”.
The numbers are perhaps even
more impressive in terms of
research activity. Auckland hosts
approximately 200 projects per
annum, producing an estimated
700 publications on sport and
