Cheltenham during The Festival,
the coming months you’ll see
some great content and enjoy
some of the best sports writing
from Gloucestershire and beyond.
memory to share. We want the
All Gold to stand out from the
crowd and to be a platform for
news and debate about rugby
league, in this country and further
together at the last moment,
and enjoy a whole new and fresh
approach - online, up to date and
totally free of charge.
In this issue you’ll be able to find
out about the progress of the All
progresses.
The next edition of All Gold will
appear on Friday 25th March, in
A NEW
FUTURE FOR
PROFESSIONAL
RUGBY LEAGUE
FIRST TIME VISITORS TO THE PRINCE OF WALES
STADIUM WILL WONDER HOW THIS HAS HAPPENED.
PROFESSIONAL RUGBY LEAGUE, THE ONE TRUE
GLADIATOR SPORT, MILES AWAY FROM ITS SPIRITUAL
HOME, DEEP IN THE SOFT UNDERBELLY OF ENGLAND.
The beer tastes of apples and
the venue is so far south they’ve
stopped putting raw onion in
the sandwiches. You can barely
understand a word they say and
the pies have been replaced with
pasties. Then you discover that it’s
not even a normal club team, it’s
a university side populated with
students and a few seasoned pros
from the heartlands. How has this
come to pass? Has the RFL gone
mad?
Well, we hope not. The University
of Gloucestershire All Golds is a
unique proposition in professional
sport. It is the only professional
rugby league team, anywhere
in the world, to be owned by a
university.
There are several reasons for this.
Firstly, we want to prove the point
that the South West can produce
high quality rugby league players
and a team that can be respected
and feared at professional level.
Many of the players you’ll see
tonight have already come
through this pathway – playing for
the University team or the other
All Golds feeder sides. This is egg
chasing country, and whether it’s
union or league we know there is
great talent in our region.
Secondly, we want to create
a new sporting spectacle for
the people of Gloucestershire.
Cheltenham was indeed the
birthplace of international rugby
league (for more information
on this go to our website, www.
allgoldsrugby.com), but that was
back in 1908 and we believe that
rugby league could and should
be part of the sporting fabric of
our great county. Gloucestershire
won so much gold and silverware
at the 2012 Olympics that it could
have featured as a separate
country on the medals table – we
want to build on this success and
help the people of our county fall
in love with league just as they
have done with union and so
many other sports.
Thirdly, the University boasts
students with a huge range of
talents. From sports therapists
to journalists to coaches to TV
production experts to sports
analysts to marketers to event
managers, we have outstanding
young people who can make
great contributions to the All
Golds adventure and get great
experience while they do it.
Finally, we want to ensure that
rugby league develops as a grass
roots sport in our region as well
as at the professional level. We
are working hard to ensure that
schools and community clubs can
offer an excellent rugby league
experience to those young people
who are inspired by the efforts of
the All Golds on the pitch.
We hope you will join us on the
journey. Perhaps as a season
ticket holder or regular supporter,
perhaps as an occasional visitor
to The Festival town. Find us on
Twitter, like us on Facebook, enjoy
our highlights on Youtube. Come
and support us when you can.
Wherever you are, give us a shout
and #followthefern.
THE ALL
GOLDS STORY
SO FAR
WRITTEN BY GEORGE COWBURN
6
THE DATE - 3RD MARCH 2013,THE PLACE - THE PRINCE
OF WALES STADIUM CHELTENHAM WHERE A PIECE OF
RUGBY LEAGUE HISTORY IS MADE AS THE UNIVERSITY
OF GLOUCESTERSHIRE ALL GOLDS PLAY THEIR
FIRST EVER GAME AS A PROFESSIONAL CLUB IN THE
NORTHERN RAIL CUP AGAINST FELLOW NEWCOMERS
HEMEL STAGS.
The team that day was made up
largely of players from the All
Golds student team of 2012 who
were the champions of Great
Britain defeating giants of the
university game like Leeds Met
and Loughborough University
that season. Four of the 2016 All
Golds survive from that match -
Phil Cowburn,Richard Jones,Joe
McClean and James Walter.
It was a tough first season despite
cup wins against Gateshead
Thunder up in Tyneside and
community club Skirlaugh in
Hull. The Skirlaugh win brought
Super League club Salford
down to Cheltenham where we
had our largest ever crowd and
unfortunately our largest ever
defeat! It was to be June 30th
however before we got our first
league victory - away at Oxford
followed by another the week
after in Neath against South Wales
Scorpions. We finished bottom of
the league that season but much
improved performances and
results in the second half of the
league programme gave us hope
for a better second year. One
bright spot was Tyla Hepi (son of
coach Brad) being named Best
Young Player in Championship 1 at
the Rugby League’s end of season
awards ceremony.
Year 2 did bring about the hoped
for improvement. After Brad
Hepi,s early season departure
www.allgoldsrugby.com

Golds twice scored a record 66
points at home against Skirlaugh
and Coventry Bears which saw
the first try hat tricks for the All
Golds by Courtney Davies,Steve
Parry and Mark Bowen. Skipper
Parry led superbly from the
front - an ever present over 25
games (along with Phil Cowburn
and Callum Mulkeen) he swept
the board at the club’s end
appearance against Swinton,also
passing the 300 points mark for
the club.
In the post season European
Championships the club was
proud to have 7 players in 3 of
the country’s squads. Courtney
Davies,Jamie Murphy,Steve Parry
and Lewis Reece represented
champions Wales whilst Callum
the club made the headlines by
appointing Scotland Coach Steve
McCormack in his place. Amongst
our wins that season were
memorable ones at home against
league leaders York City Knights
and away at League 1 Grand Final
winners,promoted Hunslet. The
Hunslet win,arguably our best
to date,was masterminded by
Craig Cook,one of many excellent
performances by the veteran
hooker from Hull. On course for a
play off finish a really bad run of
injuries left us short of numbers
and finishing in 6th place in a 9
team league. A feather in our cap
was being named Championship
1 Club of the Year in the Rugby
League’s end of season awards.
of season awards ceremony.
During the season Phil Cowburn
became the first player to make
50 appearances for the All Golds
(totalling 63 by the end of the
season) and Matt Bradley joined
the “50 club” with a late season
Mulkeen and Graham O’Keeffe
played for Ireland and Joe
McClean did likewise for Scotland.
Not bad for a club only 3 seasons
old - the only professional club in
the world owned by a University.
7
For Year 3 former Super League
player Lee Greenwood was
appointed as Head Coach and
he continued our upward journey
guiding the All Golds to 9th place
in an enlarged, very competitive
Kingstone Press League 1 which
included 5 teams from the
previous seasons Championship.
This earned us the unofficial
title “Kings of the South” in the
League Express and Rugby
Leaguer paper. We did beat
one northern team,Newcastle
Thunder (formerly Gateshead)
and also gave champions Oldham
a fright,narrowly losing 33-30 at
their Whitebank Stadium. The All
KINGSTONE
PRESS LEAGUE 1
PREVIEW
WRITTEN BY PATRICK BAINES
IT’S STILL EARLY DAYS IN LEAGUE 1, WITH MOST SIDES
ONLY TWO GAMES INTO THEIR SEASON.
10
French side Toulouse have made
quite a start to their campaign
with two thrashings of Coventry
and Hemel propelling them to
the top of the table. Sterner
tests await the French side and it
will be fascinating to see if they
are able to translate their home
form on the road. We’ve seen
how Catalans Dragons struggle
on British soil, the big test for
Toulouse will be long away trips to
the established League 1 sides like
Keighley and Barrow.
Talking of Barrow and the
Cumbrian side will be confident
of pushing for a promotion place
having won their first two games.
An opening day defeat of North
Wales Crusaders was followed
last weekend by a stunning 40-6
hammering of Hunslet. Hunslet,
relegated from the Championship
last season, have made a poor
start to life in League 1 and
desperately need a win having
lost their first two.
Rochdale and Doncaster are the
other two sides with a perfect win
record, although York and London
Skolars could join them having
only played once. Rochdale have
signed a number of high profile
players in the off season and
look a team going places. Their
recent 58-16 win on Sunday at
Coventry followed an opening
day win against Hunslet and the
side from Greater Manchester
certainly look like being involved
in the business end of the season.
Doncaster followed up their
home win against the All Golds
with a hugely encouraging 44-28
win at Keighley. Not many sides
go to Cougar Park and come
away with a win so to get the
two points will give Doncaster a
much needed confidence boost
following a torrid season in the
Championship.
North Wales Crusaders put their
off field problems behind them
on Sunday with a massively
important win at Newcastle.
Having suffered financial troubles
the side from Wrexham lost
a number of their high profile
players to rival sides but were still
good enough to earn a crucial
two points away to Newcastle.
For Newcastle it was a huge blow,
especially after their Challenge
Cup defeat to Siddal.
Oxford have found things
tough with a first day defeat to
Newcastle followed by a 26-16
loss in the capital to the Skolars. A
dual registration partnership with
Castleford and Batley will help
add a bit of quality to their line up
but they face an uphill battle to
reach the top eight.
For those unaware of the League
1 structure - The 15 sides each
play each other once before the
division is split in two. The top
eight sides breakaway from the
bottom seven and play each other
once again to decide who gains
promotion. The bottom seven
participate in the consolation
shield with the winners gaining
a piece of silverware plus a
significant cash prize.
ALL GOLDS vs.
SCORPIONS
PREVIEW
WRITTEN BY PATRICK BAINES
THE ALL GOLDS HOST LOCAL RIVALS SOUTH WALES
SCORPIONS ON WEDNESDAY EVENING UNDER THE
FLOODLIGHTS AT THE PRINCE OF WALES STADIUM.
12
It will be a welcome return to
Cheltenham for the Golden Fern
who have played three successive
games on the road in 2016. A
comfortable victory at Coventry in
the iPro Sport Cup was followed
by an incredible, last gasp win
at North Wales Crusaders in
the Challenge Cup a week later.
Coming from 36-16 down with
only 20 minutes to play, Harry
Kidd’s try just ten seconds before
full time set up a fourth round
tie against Toulouse in the South
of France this Saturday. Next
up came the league opener – a
trip to Doncaster and for the
majority of the contest we were
a match for the side who were
relegated from the Championship
last season. With a quarter
of the game to go only eight
points separated the two sides
but a quartet of converted tries
late on gave the home side a
comfortable win. All Golds Head
Coach Lee Greenwood will be
looking to build on that showing
on Wednesday night. “Courtney
Davies and Lewis Reece both
came off against Doncaster and
couldn’t go back on, leaving us to
play 60 minutes with two fit subs.
Maybe that was a factor in our
collapse at the end of the game.
We were more than a match for
them for 70 minutes and the
scoreline in no way reflected
how well we competed,” said
Greenwood.
“There is no way we are taking
South Wales lightly. The games
against them last year were very
competitive and scrappy with
so many ex players on either
side. They will get stronger as
the season goes on. We will
worry about Saturday’s game at
Toulouse straight after the game
on Wednesday.”
“We want to perform well and get
our first League points of 2016 on
the board, simple as that. There is
no time to build up slowly with the
League structure as it is now, so a
win is vital for us.”
Welsh international stand off
Courtney Davies is expected to
be back in the starting line up
after his knock against Doncaster.
www.allgoldsrugby.com

Second rower Joe McClean,
an absentee for the Doncaster
game, will be back in the squad
after missing out with concussion
last time out. Irish international
Graham O’Keeffe is still a while
away from first team action as he
recovers from a broken arm.
It has been a tough start to 2016
for the Welsh side who have
lost all three of their competitive
games. A 44-6 defeat to London
Skolars in the iPro Sport Cup was
followed by a 37-20 loss against
amateur side Featherstone Lions
in the Challenge Cup a week later.
Their League 1 campaign got off
to a torrid start after Keighley
dished out a 60-4 hammering
in Caerphilly. The men from
the Principality will be boosted
by the recent signing of Welsh
International Christian Roets who
has signed from the North Wales
Crusaders. The 35 year old centre
has played in two World Cups and
will give much needed experience
to a young Scorpions squad.
The All Golds twice got the better
of the Scorpions last season,
scoring 36 points in both games.
The first of those came on day
one of the season with a 30 point
winning margin in Cheltenham.
The Scorpions fared slightly
better on their home turf, scoring
16 points, but went down by 20
points as the All Golds recorded a
second successive league double
over the Welsh side.
Golds for the 2016 season.
The opening speaker was
the General Manager of the
Greenway Hotel,Luc Morel.
Luc gave a very informative
address emphasising
the great importance of
team work in both the
business and sporting
worlds. A short interval for
further refreshments saw
proceedings resume with a
new addition to the agenda
namely an entertaining
and positive presentation
concerning new signings
and other news from club
President Lionel Hurst
and second year Sports’
Journalism student Patrick
Baines.
The moment then came for
one of world rugby’s most
talented players to speak,
former Wales dual code
international Iestyn Harris. The
audience was regaled with
wonderful tales full of humour
from Iestyn’s time in both
League and Union.
According to All Golds’
President Lionel Hurst: “ the
entire occasion was great
fun and very entertaining.
It is so important for the
club to continue to build its
commercial and community
partnerships. You know it has
been a success when all the
guests leave for their daily
commitments with smiles on
their faces! “
CHELTENHAM
FESTIVAL
PREVIEW
WRITTEN BY KIERAN O’SULLIVAN – FREELANCE RACING
BROADCASTER WITH LADBROKES AND AT THE RACES.
FOR MANY PEOPLE NEW YEAR’S EVE FALLS ON THE
LAST DAY IN DECEMBER BUT FOR FANATICS OF JUMPS
RACING YOU COULD BE FORGIVEN FOR THINKING IT TO
BE THE FRIDAY OF THE GOLD CUP IN MARCH.
16
Soon after, the annual festival
draws to a close and on New
Year’s Day (Saturday) we will
draw breath and begin the
hunt for next year’s winners…
there really is nothing quite
like it.
Willie Mullins brings a
colossal battalion and his
now customary opening day
short priced four-timer could
send bookmakers running
for the cover of Cleave Hill.
It is worth noting that only
one of his short ones was
turned over last year – Annie
Power’s final fence blunder
the only blot on an otherwise
astonishing copy book.
Min, Douvan (again), Annie
Power (again!) and Vroum
Vroum Mag could well
deliver at what would be an
even bigger collective price.
However, I have taken the
view that the key is siding
with those that represent
value and swerving those
that may win but are plenty
short enough to do so.
I have outlined a short priced
treble, an each way treble to
offer some fun and hopefully
profit.
From the shorties, I popped
in Vroum Vroum Mag to
succeed where Annie Power
came up short in the Mares
Hurdle on day one. She
could be quite special and
it’s worth noting that she had
most of these comfortably
held last time at Ascot where
she hacked up. The drying
ground would be a slight
concern but the fact that
she runs on the opening
day means she will probably
have the softest surface of
the week underfoot and
should get away with it.
The second leg of the banker
treble is Thistlecrack who
looks pretty bombproof
in the World Hurdle on
Thursday. He ticks every box
imaginable – economical
jumper, strong traveler, high
cruising speed for a stayer,
handles Cheltenham, handles
good ground, handles the
mud and has class to boot.
Finally, I’ll put in J P
McManus’s Nap of the
week – On The Fringe in the
Foxhunters. He hosed up
last year but was way below
par last time in treacherous
conditions at Leopardstown.
However, that was after
a long lay off and he is
reported to be back nearing
his best.
While they are relatively
short individually, the treble
will pay in the region of 14/1.
www.allgoldsrugby.com

The each way treble is a nice
opportunity to fish out some
value.
First up is Out Sam in the
Handicap Chase over 3m
plus on day one – he is
thrown in off 139 and was
reportedly earmarked
for better races until the
handicapper decided to
gift Warren Greatrex an
excessively lenient mark. He
still represents value at 7/1.
The second leg is Doctor
Harper for David Pipe in
the Kim Muir on Thursday
– the official handicapper,
Phil Smith, has as much as
admitted that he hasn’t been
able to get a grip on him and
the facile nature of his recent
victory marks him out as the
annual Pipe plot horse of the
festival.
The price has tightened up
in recent days but is still
holding at 6s.
Finally, a horse I have
followed throughout this
season for a trainer destined
to crack the big time Neil
Mulholland. The canny
Northern Irishman runs
Shantou Village in the Albert
Bartlett on Friday and seems
sure to feature and perhaps
upset hotpot Barter’s Hill.
Shantou Village bolted
up in a graded contest at
Cheltenham in November
over shorter on good ground
before chasing home the
breathtaking Yanworth in
Januuary on heavy ground…
his only defeat. Now he steps
up to 3 miles but he did
win his only point to point
start over the same trip so
should handle it. Barter’s Hill
is many people’s cert of the
week but I wasn’t impressed
when upped in trip last time
at Doncaster while there is
a nagging doubt about the
suitability of the Cheltenham
track – all his best form has
come on flat tracks. At the
prices and with the each
way option I’m very keen on
Shantou Village at 6/1.
So to recap. Two trebles;
one short:
Vroum Vroum Mag,
Thistlecrack and On The
Fringe.
The other each way at nice
prices:
Out Sam, Doctor Harper
and Shantou Village.
Throw in a sneaky six-timer
on the lot and it could be
quite a New Year’s Eve
indeed.
Good Luck!
GRAHAM
O’KEEFFE
WRITTEN BY PATRICK BAINES - PHOTOS BY LEWIS MITCHELL
www.allgoldsrugby.com

MID MARCH IN CHELTENHAM SEES THE REGENCY TOWN
SWAMPED WITH VISITORS FROM ALL CORNERS OF THE
GLOBE FOR THE FOUR DAY NATIONAL HUNT FESTIVAL.
One country with more than
its fair share of visitors is
Ireland. The Emerald Isle has
a reputation for equine talent
which isn’t lost on the huge
number of Irish folk who flock
over to see their favourite
horses run at Prestbury Park.
One Irishman hoping
to make an impact
on the town’s
rugby league
team is Graham
O’Keeffe, a
Wexford man
who signed with
the All Golds last
year from local
rivals Oxford.
The forward is
currently recovering
from a broken arm sustained
representing his country
in last Autumns European
Championships and is
hopeful of getting back
on the field of play sooner
rather than later.
O’Keeffe was bought up playing
the hugely physical sports of
hurling and Gaelic football,
games which he admits he
didn’t excel at. “I was no good at
them so I turned my attention
to rugby. I always enjoyed
watching rugby league from an
early age but never really had
a chance to play it. It is a bit
different now, there’s a big push
on the sport with regards to
promoting it domestically which
is great to see. It was when I
went to University I really got
involved.”
O’Keeffe joined the Golden
Fern halfway through the
2015 season, on loan from
Oxford. After a string of fine
performances he was rewarded
with an offer of a contract for
the new season. “It was an
easy decision for me to stay
on. This is a great club with
so many characters. From the
minute I arrived at the club I
felt welcome. Lee and the boys
have created a really positive
environment already. As a
squad we are all mates and I
think that helps us in the close
matches, everyone pulling
together for each other.”
A big forward with a turn
of pace, O’Keeffe is a great
option to have for All Golds
Head Coach Lee Greenwood
who praised the qualities of
the Irishman. “I’ve been really
pleased with Graham since he
joined us. He is still raw in some
areas but he has some qualities
you cannot coach – attitude,
toughness and aggression. He
is a good character within the
squad.”
With the introduction of
Toulouse the League 1 division
looks as competitive as ever
but O’Keeffe is optimistic his
team can gain a place inside
the top eight. “Making the
play-offs is the aim. Lee has
assembled a very strong squad
and everyone is starting to gel.
I think this season will be a very
exciting one.”
When I asked Graham his
career highlight the response
was unsurprising for such a
patriotic person. “Lining out
for Ireland against Scotland in
Dublin for my first International
Cap. Putting the green jersey
on is a huge honour for me,
especially on home soil.”
Having missed all of pre-season
and our two cup wins with a
broken arm O’Keeffe is raring
to get back on the pitch. “This
injury has probably been the
most frustrating of my career
so far, but it has made me a
lot hungrier to play. I’ve been
working hard on my fitness
so hopefully I will be up for
selection by the end of the
month.”
Lets hope the Irish eyes will be
smiling when he gets back to
full fitness.
BACKROOM
PROFILE
HOLLIE SIMS
WRITTEN BY PATRICK BAINES
THERE IS MORE TO A SPORTS TEAM THAN
THE PLAYERS OUT ON THE PITCH - OFF FIELD
STAFF PLAY A VITAL ROLE IN ENSURING THE
CLUB FUNCTIONS TO THE BEST OF ITS ABILITY.
www.allgoldsrugby.com

Now in her last year
at the University of
Gloucestershire, sports
therapy student Hollie
Sims has become an
integral member of the
All Golds medical team.
Hollie, from the small town of
Bovey Tracey in Devon, is a keen
rugby fan and says the chance
to work alongside the All Golds
was an opportunity too good
to turn down. “Undertaking
a placement with the All
Golds whilst studying for my
sports therapy degree at the
University of Gloucestershire
was undoubtedly the best
decision for me. The club train
and use the Oxstalls campus
as a hub, which reduces the
time I have to commit to travel,
allowing me to balance my
course commitments.” She
first got involved with the
club during her second year
at University, since then she
has not only provided medical
assistance to the first team but
also the BUCS side where she
has become a hugely popular
member of the set up.
“A match day is really hectic for
me. It begins very early where
I’ll be checking the huge list of
medical equipment we need to
take to the ground. I load that
in my car, or the team coach if
we’re playing away, then when
the players get to the ground
I’m straight into the changing
room where I’ll be working
on treatment and taping and
strapping the players before
kick-off. During the game I
assist the physiotherapist and
doctor with anything that may
arise during the game.”
“Throughout my time with the
All Golds I have met brilliant
staff throughout the set up.
When I leave they will be
invaluable relationships. As well
as current staff, players and
the community that surrounds
the club, past members of
the medical team in particular
have been a huge influence on
me as a developing medical
professional and shaping my
future plans.”
Working with the BUCS side
during winter and the first
team from spring through until
autumn has given Hollie all year
round experience that she has
used to help her studies. “What
I learn in lectures I’m able to put
into practice with the All Golds.
I get to work with some great
players, I’m really happy to be
associated with this club.”
“I’ve had so many great
moments with the All Golds.
Our recent win at North Wales
would definitely be up there.
We had a few injuries in the
second half so I was treating
them whilst we fought back in
the last quarter. I wasn’t really
able to watch the game then
all of a sudden Lionel (Hurst,
club president) jumped over
the barrier celebrating our last
minute try! He nearly knocked
me off my feet!”
So what does the future hold
for Hollie? “I’d like to continue
my studies in physiotherapy
definitely, but at this moment
in time I’m focused on getting
the best degree I can get
here at the University of
Gloucestershire and relishing
the time I have left with the All
Golds.”
CONFERENCE
LEAGUE SOUTH
UPDATE
WRITTEN BY CHRIS WILSON
THE 2016 CONFERENCE LEAGUE SOUTH SEASON KICKS
OFF THIS WEEKEND WITH A CLASH BETWEEN CHAMPIONS
NOTTINGHAM OUTLAWS AND TORFAEN TIGERS.
22
The All Golds start their debut
campaign after Easter but are
looking to arrange a friendly on
Good Friday to ensure the squad
is ready for action. Coach Alex
Davidson has worked the squad
hard during the winter and this
paid off in a tough friendly match
with Cardiff City.
A youthful side stood up
physically to a bigger Cardiff team
and scored five converted tries as
their pace out wide paid off.
The players put down a marker
for selection and, given there that
there are a number of experienced
players to come back into the
selection reckoning, things
look positive for a successful
campaign.
Since the end of last season, there
have been plenty of changes
in the CLS. The Gloucestershire
Warriors left to be replaced by
the All Golds and the London
Chargers have replaced the
Sheffield Hallam Eagles.
Oxford Cavaliers and Leicester
Storm then withdrew leaving
a seven-team league and the
organisers scratching their heads
having to find two extra fixtures
to ensure a 14-game schedule.
The season will be challenging for
the All Golds as there are quality
sides throughout.
The Welsh challenge will be
considerable with three sides
from the valleys, Torfaen Tigers
and Valley Cougars, appearing
alongside the West Wales Raiders.
The Cougars in particular will be
strong opponents having won the
title in 2014 and finished runners
up to the Nottingham Outlaws
last September.
The Outlaws and Coventry Bears
make up a strong contingent from
the Midlands while newcomers
London Chargers represent the
capital and will be a fine addition
to the league having won the
Harry Jepson Trophy – a national
knockout competition
for the best sides from
the Community
game – for the
past three
seasons.
Two of the All Golds’ first three
matches will be played at their
new home at Gordon League
RFC before they visit champions
Nottingham in what should be a
terrific contest.
There will be potential for a
Gloucestershire-London challenge
as the CLS side face the Chargers
at Gordon League on 2 July
before the All Golds’ Kingstone
Press League 1 fixture against the
London Skolars the following day
at the Prince of Wales Stadium.
The extra fixtures appear in the
final weeks of the campaign with
a second trip to the Cougars
and a home game against
Torfaen Tigers which rounds off
the league
campaign.
The top four
in the table
qualify for the
semi-finals and
the winners
will contest the
Grand Final on
Saturday 17
September.
WEST OF
ENGLAND
UPDATE
WRITTEN BY CHRIS WILSON
THERE ARE LESS THAN NINE WEEKS TO GO TO THE
START OF THE 2016 WEST OF ENGLAND LEAGUE AND
CLUBS ARE GEARING UP THEIR PREPARATIONS FOR THE
BIG KICK OFF ON SATURDAY 7 MAY.
Things have not gone smoothly
off the field with the controversial
acceptance of Southampton
Spitfires and Portsmouth
Seahawks leading to a proposal
for a ten team league to be
structured in two pools in order to
minimise travel as far as possible.
In addition, a Magic weekend of
local derbies is planned while the
whole thing is set in motion by the
West of England 9s in Swindon.
Champions Bath Romans will be
favourites to repeat their success
even though they have made a
number of off-field changes to
their coaching staff and have
a new venue at Corsham RFC.
The Romans have appointed
John Fatiaki as head coach with
Matthew Tatman working on the
squad’s strength and conditioning.
They will be assisted by Paul Riley
and Rob Cryer.
All have military experience and
will bring steel to a side that lost
just twice in 2015.
Having come close to a grand
final victory with a rebuilt squad
last season, the 2015 runners up
Bristol Sonics will be looking to go
one better this time out. Sonics
coach Dom Swann is looking
to build a strong squad for this
year’s campaign: “Last season
was about rebuilding as we had
a high turnover of players from
the previous year. But thanks to
everyone’s hard work we really
progressed as a squad so we’re
now looking to kick-on from last
year’s success.”
Cheltenham Phoenix were the
Cup runners-up and 9s winners
last summer and will hope to
have Zac France on the sidelines
assisting with the coaching duties
as he continues his remarkable
recovery from a bad neck injury
sustained in the Cup Final.
Somerset Vikings, who will be
starting their fourth season at
Old Morganians, just outside
Bridgwater, and will be looking
to maintain the momentum that
saw them reach the semi-finals in
2014. Swindon St George’s move
to Supermarine RFC has been a
success with the venue hosting
this year’s 9s tournament and
leading to a number of quality
recruits joining the club.
Rejoining the league will be
2014 champions Gloucestershire
Warriors and the 2012 title holders
Oxford Cavaliers. Both have had
spells in the Conference League
South and will relish the challenge
of a competitive competition to
recharge and rebuild their squads
as key pathway sides for their
respective professional sides,
Gloucestershire All Golds and
Oxford.
After playing friendlies against
Bridgend Blue Bulls and a Bristol
Sonics Development XIII, the
Forest Bulldogs make their
competitive bow this summer.
Playing principally out of Bream
RFC, they carry the torch for
Forest rugby into the 13-man
code. The club plans to use other
venues in the area to promote the
game
Fixtures have yet to be released
but already the anticipation is
building for an exciting summer.
UPDATE FROM
THE BIRTHPLACE
OF RUGBY
LEAGUE
24
IT IS WONDERFUL TO HAVE THE GREATEST GAME
BACK AND ON OUR TV SCREENS. THE RETURN OF
THE NRL HAS BEEN ESPECIALLY WELCOME WITH
SOME SUPERB MATCHES. IS THERE ANOTHER TEAM
SPORT THAT IS ABLE TO DELIVER SUCH MAGNIFICENT
ACTION AND ON A REGULAR AND CONSTANT BASIS?
THE ANSWER OF COURSE IS NO...
The European season opened
with the World Club Series
and valiant efforts by St
Helens,Wigan and Leeds
against Sydney Roosters,
Brisbane Broncos and
North Queensland
Cowboys respectively
were not enough to repel
the Australian victors.
Nonetheless it was
a tremendous
experience
to simply
enjoy the
consummate artistry of one
of the sporting world’s true
greats, Johnathan Thurston.
What an ambassador
for the 13 man code
and how delightful
to see him personally
hand his kicking tee
to a lucky child in
the Headingley
Rugby
League
continues to develop
throughout the nations of the
that its best and principal
vehicle for expansion is the 9s
Again the Auckland 9s proved
to be a huge success both on
and off the field of play.
With the Rugby World Cup
how Serbia for example is
its endeavours to qualify with
a worthwhile recent tour to
rivals. It will no doubt be the
start of another memorable
sporting tradition. With
the international theme in
mind fans will want to look
out for the array of national
representatives who may be
wearing the Golden Fern from
Wales, Ireland, Scotland and
Jamaica.
SKY TRY
PROGRAMME
KICKS OFF IN
GLOUCESTERSHIRE
26
AFTER A WINTER OF PLANNING AND
PREPARATION, THE ALL GOLDS IN THE COMMUNITY
HAVE BEGUN COACHING IN SCHOOLS AS PART OF
THE RFL’S SKY TRY RUGBY LEAGUE PROGRAMME
WITH RECORD INTEREST AMONGST SCHOOLS.
Sky Try is the biggest ever
programme of Rugby League
in schools and is helping more
children and young people have
fun, get active, grow in confidence
and enjoy Rugby League. The All
Golds in the Community project is
in its’ second year of funding for
the programme and will be aiming
to make the schools Rugby
League programme bigger than
ever before, breaking ground in
new areas and looking to develop
a sustainable Rugby League
community game in the area.
The programme’s community
coaches are currently in the
middle of their first block of
activity, delivering in 11 Gloucester
Primary schools from across
the city, and will be running
the festival for this school on
18 April. After this the focus
switches to secondary schools
delivery, with the annual 1908
Cup and Golden Fern cups
taking place on 20 May, before
Cheltenham primary schools
get their chance to sample the
program from June onwards.
The project will be breaking new
ground with a planned central
venue coaching programme in
the forest of dean and additional
coaching into 3 Cheltenham
primary schools, around the
University’s Park Campus, with
the aim of creating a brand new
community club for the summer
period. This community club will
mirror the successful club that
ran in Gloucester last yearand it’s
anticipated that supporters will
see the two clubs, aimed at 8-11
year olds, competing on the pitch
as part of match day later in the
year.
The RFL’s Sky Try programme will
continue for another 5 years and
the All Golds will hope to continue
delivering this programme in
order to achieve the stated aim of
“Establishing Rugby League
as a sustainable, well
resourced and viable sport
within Gloucestershire and
the wider region”
ALL GOLDS LAUNCH TALENT PATHWAY WITH
PLAYER DEVELOPMENT DAYS
The south west’s only
professional rugby league
club, the University of
Gloucestershire All Golds,
have announced that they
will be overseeing a brand
new pathway for talented
young players. It’s hoped that
it will become a foundation
for the growth of the sport in
the region. This development
follows on from two years of
successful schools development
work, run as part of the Sky
Sports funded “Sky Try” project.
It will link into the RFL’s player
development programme
known as “Embed the Pathway”
which aims to provide access
for all players from schools
and community rugby league
through to the full England
team. The programme is part
of a four year strategy for the
club to develop a performance
programme underpinned by an
Academy competing against
the likes of Super League giants
Wigan Warriors, St Helens and
Leeds Rhinos. Talent Pathway
Manager Dan Garbutt was
keen to stress the importance
of developing this pathway in a
measured and gradual way.
Further details of the player
development days can be
found below or by visiting
www.allgoldsrugby.com and
any players wishing to be
involved should contact Dan
Garbutt at dgarbutt@glos.ac.uk
