We’ve had a record
response for this year’s
Nurse and Midwife of the
Year Awards with over
150 nominations.
Mandie Sunderland, NUH Chief Nurse
said: “This competition is a highlight of
the nursing and midwifery calendar and
a great way to remind ourselves and our
patients what a wonderful, dedicated
team we have.
“I’m particularly pleased that we have
been able to expand this year’s awards
to recognise the invaluable contributions
of our international staff, students and
Healthcare Assistants.”
There are seven categories in this year’s
awards, plus a special one-off award to
recognise 10 years of caring (in the year
we celebrate a decade of NUH):
• Adult Nurse of the Year
• Children’s Nurse of the Year
• Midwife of the Year
• Student Nurse or Midwife of the Year
• International Nurse or Midwife of the
Year
• Healthcare Assistant of the Year
• Nurse or Midwife Leader of the Year
• 10 Years of Caring – a special award
for an individual, chosen by the Chief
Nurse, to mark 10 years of dedication
and exceptional patient care
The awards are run in partnership with the
Nottingham Post and Nottingham express
Transit (NET), who will name a tram after
the overall winner.
Mike Sassi, Nottingham Post Editor, said:
“We love Nurse and Midwife of the Year.
It’s a tremendous event – and a fantastic
evening. The Post is very proud, on behalf
of our readers and their patients, to pay
tribute to NUH nurses and midwives. They
deserve our thanks. But they also deserve
the headline billing and very public pat
on the back that these awards rightly give
them.”
Jamie Swift, NET’s Head of Marketing,
said: “This award scheme is all about
recognising the commitment and
talent within Nottingham’s nursing and
midwifery community.
“Our links to NUH and, in particular QMC
with its dedicated tram stop are important.
We are happy to have forged such a
strong association with this initiative. The
city’s hospitals and their highly dedicated
nurses and midwives are a vital part of our
community.”
Judges met at the end of March to decide
the shortlisted candidates in each of the
categories voted for by the public and you
can see the full shortlist at www.nuh.nhs.uk
Voting closes on 29 April and winners are
announced on 19 May.
Here are a selection of nominees, and
what it meant to them.
Julie Potter-Tate, whose son is treated
by Rachel and her team, said: “She has
gone above and beyond and without
her I don’t know where I’d be.”
Rachel said: “You feel a bit humbled
really – it’s nice to have the boost and
get recognition for the good things
you do and the care you give.”
JOSH DOWNEY
Josh Downey, Midwife on Bonington
She said: “Josh has restored my faith
in hospitals and proves that there
are brilliant, caring and considerate
midwives around.”
Josh said: “It’s lovely to be nominated.
Pregnancy is fascinating and it’s nice
to care for women and their families. I
have great support from the team on
the ward. They are a great team.”
