WELCOME
TO THE
ALL GOLD
ALL OF US UNDERSTAND THE ADDICTIVE NATURE OF
SPORT. WHEN YOU SUPPORT A TEAM, YOU LIVE AND
BREATHE THEIR SUCCESS AND FAILURE.
4
A victory can keep you in positive
spirits for several days, the gloom
of defeat can last much longer.
The trick, of course, is to keep
it all in perspective. We’ve been
working hard on that in the past
week since the drama of our last
minute defeat to Coventry Bears,
who were victorious over the
All Golds for the first time in our
short competitive history.
The view from a distance is of
course that the match was a great
victory for rugby league. We were
delighted to welcome our new
friends from the Army for the
curtain raiser, and then even more
pleased to discover that many
new visitors had come along to
the Prince of Wales for the first
time to sample Kingstone Press
League 1 action. We can’t imagine
that they were disappointed for a
minute – the match swung both
ways and remained in the balance
until the very end, with a clinical
drop kick finally securing the
victory for Coventry. So those of
you from Swindon, the Forest of
Dean, Cam and even London who
came for the first time, we hope
you will soon return and enjoy
some more classic sporting action
– only next time we hope that the
home side will emerge with the
points
they
need to
ascend
the table.
We’ve had more plaudits for
this excellent magazine, and
we hope you enjoy this edition
of All Gold too. While most of
our contributors have a direct
connection with the All Golds
team itself, we welcome articles
and features on rugby league
from anyone with expertise, a
specialism or memories that
they would like to share. We
also welcome features on more
general sporting issues or
controversies, so please send
your contributions to the Editor at
allgolds@glos.ac.uk.
Our opponents in the iPro Sport
Cup Quarter Final are of course
the mightly Newcastle Thunder.
We hope our visitors enjoy both
the All Gold and the match at the
Prince of Wales. We look forward
to welcoming the same side
back for our next home
league match on Sunday
April 24th
Thanks to everyone who
has contributed to this issue
of the All Gold, particularly
George Cowburn, Lewis
Mitchell, Patrick Baines, Chris
Wilson, Lionel Hurst and of
course Craig Paul Design.
We hope you enjoy it!
THE ALL
GOLD WORLD
OF SPORT
LAST WEEK WAS A VERY SAD ONE FOR SPORT WITH
THE PASSING OF THE GREAT JOHAN CRUYFF.
With his creativity, enthusiasm and
occasional disdain for authority,
Cruyff was an inspiration for those
looking to develop their sport in new
ways, putting the player – or child
– at the centre of the experience
and prioritizing fun, skill acquisition
and innovation over rigid systems,
authoritarian coaching and a win at
all costs mentality.
Johan may never have experienced
rugby league, but in honour of the
great man we have assembled some
of his finest quotes. We think that
rugby league may have something
to learn from him, but we’ll leave you
to be the judge:
Someone who has juggled the ball
in the air during a game, after which
four defenders of the opponent
get the time to run back, that’s the
player people think is great. I say he
has to go to a circus.
Why couldn’t you beat a richer
club? I’ve never seen a bag of
money score a goal.
I always threw the ball in, because
then if I got the ball back, I was the
only player unmarked.
Players that aren’t true leaders but
try to be, always bash other players
after a mistake. True leaders on the
pitch already assume others will
make mistakes.
What is speed? The sports press
often confuses speed with insight.
See, if I start running slightly earlier
than someone else, I seem faster.
There’s only one moment in which
you can arrive in time. If you’re not
there, you’re either too early or too
late.
Before I make a mistake, I don’t
make that mistake.
When you play a match, it is
statistically proven that players
actually have the ball three
minutes on average … So, the most
important thing is: what do you do
during those 87 minutes when you
do not have the ball. That is what
determines whether you’re a good
player or not.
After you’ve won something,
you’re no longer 100 percent,
but 90 percent. It’s like a bottle
of carbonated water where the
cap is removed for a short while.
Afterwards there’s a little less gas
inside.
I’m not religious. In Spain all 22
players make the sign of the cross
before they enter the pitch. If it
works all matches must therefore
end in a draw.
We must make sure their worst
players get the ball the most. You’ll
get it back in no time. If you have
the ball you must make the field
as big as possible, and if you don’t
have the ball you must make it as
small as possible.
Every professional golfer has a
seperate coach for his drives, for
approaches, for putting. In football
we have one coach for 15 players.
This is absurd.
Surviving the first round is never
my aim. Ideally, I’d be in one group
with Brazil, Argentina and Germany.
Then I’d have lost two rivals after
the first round. That’s how I think.
Idealisitic.
Quality without results is pointless.
Results without quality is boring.
There are very few players who
know what to do when they’re not
marked. So sometimes you tell a
player: that attacker is very good,
but don’t mark him.
I find it terrible when talents are
rejected based on computer stats.
Based on the criteria at Ajax now
I would have been rejected. When
I was 15, I couldn’t kick a ball 15
meters with my left and maybe
20 with my right. My qualities
technique and vision, are not
detectable by a computer.
If I wanted you to understand it, I
would have explained it better.
With particular thanks to
Daryl Grove of Paste Magazine
www.pastemagazine.com
who first assembled these
quotations in 2014.
RUGBY
LEAGUE
ON THE TOON
WRITTEN BY GEORGE COWBURN
UNTIL RECENTLY THE TYNESIDE CITY OF NEWCASTLE
WAS NOT SYNONYMOUS WITH RUGBY LEAGUE BUT THIS IS
CHANGING WITH THE MOVE OF GATESHEAD THUNDER TO
KINGSTON PARK AND THE CHANGE OF NAME.
6
The huge success of last season’s
Magic Weekend in Newcastle (to
be repeated again this season) also
increased the profile of the game in
the city.
So you may be surprised to know that
in the early days of the game, two test
matches were played against Australia
at the famous St James’ Park ground
in Newcastle. On 23rd January, 1909
Great Britain defeated Australia 15-5
before a crowd of 22,000. Tries by
Wigan’s Johnny Thomas, Oldham’s
George Tyson and one of the earliest
RL superstars Salford’s James
“Jumbo” Lomas plus three Lomas
goals gave Great Britain the victory.
(In an effort to expand the game
the other two tests were played in
London and Birmingham).
Despite the in-goals being described
as “dangerously narrow”, a further
test was played on 8th November,
1911 although the crowd only totalled
6,500 on that occasion. Australia won
their first ever victory over the host by
19-10, two Johnny Thomas goals and
two tries by Jim Davies (Huddersfield)
completing Great Britain’s tally. It
was an inauspicious way for the
great Harold Wagstaff to make his
international debut.
In the 1929/30 season, Australia
returned to St James’ Park where
they defeated a Northern Rugby
League side 32-22 in front of 9,690
spectators.
Rugby League continued to be
staged in the north east in the 1930s
and a non-test England-Australia
clash was arranged for Redheugh
Park, Gateshead football club’s home
ground in the Teams area of the
town. A healthy crowd of 15,576 saw
the final game of the Australian tour
settled by a 77th minute try from
Leigh centre Frederick “Fred” Harris.
There was also a Newcastle club in
the league for two seasons - 1936/7
and 1937/8. Admitted to the Rugby
League on 13th May, 1936, their first
match at the 6,000 capacity Brough
Park stadium was attended by the
Lord Mayor and other dignitaries
but resulted in a 33-12 defeat by
Huddersfield. Winning just five and
drawing one of their 38 games,
Newcastle finished next to bottom of
the league.
A move to the White City stadium in
Gateshead brought no more success
- again Newcastle finished second
bottom winning only two and drawing
four of their 36 games. The White
City was a grand 24,000 capacity
stadium built on a 12-acre site near
Scotswood Bridge, principally to host
greyhound racing. The club played
its first game on 28th August, 1937
but left the league at the end of that
second season after their application
for re-election was rejected at the
1939 Rugby League AGM with the
club owing £1,200 to the game’s
authorities.
Over half a century passed until the
game returned to the north east and
Gateshead when the International
Stadium hosted the pre-season
Charity Shield games between
Wigan and Hull (22-8 in 1991) and
Wigan and St Helens (0-17 in 1992).
The Australian tourists beat Great
Britain Under 21’s 54-10 in 1994
before the stadium hosted its first full
international between England and
France in February 1995.
Hopes were high that Newcastle
United would pursue an interest in
applying for entry to the rugby league
but this never materialised and the
last rugby league game prior to the
Thunder’s arrival was Australia’s 66-8
trouncing of Fiji in the 2000 Rugby
League World Cup.
Happily, Rugby League is back in
the city, hopefully for many years to
come.
THUNDER
IN THE
NORTH EAST
WRITTEN BY CHRIS WILSON
NEWCASTLE THUNDER’S STORY REFLECTS THE TURBULENT
TIMES RUGBY LEAGUE HAS GONE THROUGH OVER THE PAST
20 YEARS OR SO.
Both beneficiary and victim of the
Super League vision of big city
franchises which would involve
mergers among the smaller clubs on
the fringes of the heartland of the
North, the Thunder were both an
expansion franchise and a club in an
outpost of the game.
In 1998, Gateshead was officially
granted a franchise in the Super
League ahead of bids from Swansea
and Cardiff. The club was named
Gateshead Thunder following a public
contest, with Shaun McRae, who had
won the inaugural Super League title
with St Helens, as head coach.
McRae assembled a squad largely
comprised of experienced Australian
players that gelled only after a slow
start. The most high profile of them
was former Brisbane
Broncos, Queensland
and
Australia
hooker
Kerrod
Walters
who was
named
the club
captain.
Aboriginal
winger, Matt Daylight, was
signed from the Adelaide Rams and
became the joint leading try scorer in
Super League IV with 25 touchdowns
in 30 appearances and winger Ian
‘Chook’ Herron became one of the
leading goal kickers in the league
with 105 goals after signing from
Parramatta Eels.
Former St George Dragon Luke
Felsch was a rugged, hardworking
loose forward who regularly topped
the tackle count while scrum half
Willie Peters from South Sydney
racked up 11 tries, a goal and six drop
goals in his 27 matches.
Following an 18-8 defeat in a preseason
friendly at Castleford, Thunder
lost their opening two games to
Leeds and St Helens before winning
five of their next six matches to
announce that
they would be a force
to be reckoned with.
Just under 6,000 people braved
incessant rain to see skipper
Walters lead the side out against
Leeds Rhinos at the Gateshead
International Stadium – now
christened the Thunderdome.
The Rhinos triumphed 24-14 in an
entertaining match despite the
appalling conditions. Professional
Rugby League had arrived in the
North East.
Part 2 follows in the next issue
of the All Gold.
DUAL
REGISTRATION
YES OR NO?
WRITTEN BY PATRICK BAINES
10
THE MUCH TALKED ABOUT DUAL REGISTRATION
SYSTEM WAS BROUGHT BACK UNDER THE
SPOTLIGHT LAST WEEK WHEN YORK HEAD COACH
JAMES FORD ACCUSED DONCASTER OF UNFAIRLY
EXPLOITING THE SYSTEM.
Doncaster, relegated from the
Championship last season, are
partnered with Hull FC and have
regularly called on the services of
Iafeta Paleaaesina and Kirk Yeaman
this season, two experienced players
at the top level. Ford said before the
game: “Paleaaesina is a real handful
for anyone and Kirk Yeaman is
obviously dangerous at this level –
he’s an England international. But is
that really what dual-reg is for? For
me, it’s for up-and-coming players,
not players who have already made
their name at Super League level.
Playing Paleaaesina against an
expansion club like the All Golds who
are looking to make their way at this
level? I don’t know. I’m not sure that’s
in the spirit of dual-reg, although
obviously I understand it is a results
business.”
Teams in League 1, certainly the
established Northern ones, are under
pressure to gain promotion. Head
Coaches are sacked if they fail to
meet the expectation of supporters.
Yes, It’s a results business. But is
ringing up a Super League chairman
www.allgoldsrugby.com

egging for a couple of their
players the right way of going
about it? I don’t think so.
Loaning players out is not
confined to rugby league.
Some of the best footballers
we’ve seen on these
shores benefited from a
season or two on loan
at a lower league team.
David Beckham, the
most capped English
outfield player, benefited
from a spell at Preston North
End before he broke into the
Manchester Utd first team. At the
time he went on loan Beckham
was a raw 19 year old living in the
shadow of experienced superstars
at Old Trafford. After a handful of
games for Preston he came back to
Manchester and the rest is history.
What is happening in rugby league
at the moment is something
very different. Paleaaesina and
Yeaman are experienced top level
players. Would Arsenal loan out
Theo Walcott or Kieran Gibbs to
Shrewsbury or Swindon? Both
players are on the fringe of the
first team and could do with game
time but the idea that these two
England internationals could
be gracing the third tier of
professional football is as
laughable as it is ludicrous.
The temporary loan
system should be, as Ford
said, for the young, unproven
players.
On the field, dual registration is
wrecking the prospects of young
players. Doncaster have assembled
a fine squad of players this season
and will hope to be promoted come
Autumn but what happens when
Hull FC decide to call back their two
superstars, as they did last weekend
for their win over Warrington? I
don’t think it was a coincidence
they were annihilated by York. The
system can hardly do much for team
morale either. Imagine training hard
all week then the day before a game
being told that you aren’t needed
as a current Super League player
is coming in at your expense. What
kind of message does that send out?
All Golds Head coach Lee
Greenwood isn’t a fan of dual
registration and claims it does
nothing to help benefit the long
term development of a club. He
said: “Some clubs use the system
but from what I’ve seen of dualregistration
I’m not a fan of it. It
might get you a result one week
but from a coaching point of view
I don’t want to be dictated to as to
who I can and can’t pick. I keep on
saying it but I’m aiming long term
here and I want to build this club and
I don’t think using dual-registration
is the right way to achieve long term
success.”
It’s clearly a concept that splits
opinion. I’m not completely against
the idea of dual registration but I
think it’s high time the governing
body introduces an age limit and a
cap on the number of appearances a
loan player can make.
ALL GOLDS vs.
NEWCASTLE
PREVIEW
WRITTEN BY PATRICK BAINES
THE ALL GOLDS HOST NEWCASTLE THUNDER ON SUNDAY
HOPING TO SECURE A PLACE IN THE SEMI FINALS OF THE
IPRO SPORT CUP.
12
Sunday’s game against
Newcastle will give Lee
Greenwood’s side the perfect
opportunity to bounce back
after Good Friday’s home
defeat against Coventry. The
All Golds Head Coach was
critical of his squad after that
game and will be hoping to
see a reaction on Sunday.
“We weren’t good enough
last time out, simple as that.
In a way that loss might have
done us some good, if we’d
have got away with it, we’d
have got away with the other
79 minutes which wasn’t
acceptable.”
The home side will be looking
to replicate their form of
the previous round where
they comfortably saw off
Coventry Bears. The form
since has been patchy - spells
of attacking brilliance but too
many mistakes in defence
that have cost them dear. “
Defensively we need to get
better. A lot of it is attitude and
we need to cut down on giving
away cheap penalties”, said
Greenwood.
The All Golds’ Coach is still
without a host of forwards
although he’ll be pleased that
Irish international Graham
O’Keeffe was back in full
contact training this week.
Richard Jones’ recovery
from injury has taken a step
forward and the former
Keighley man hopes to play
for the development squad
on Saturday. Aaron Lyons and
James Walter are still ‘three or
four weeks away’, according
to Greenwood. Jonny Leather
and Jamie Murphy, who missed
the game against Coventry,
will be hoping to feature this
Sunday as will Almer Tagayuna
www.allgoldsrugby.com

who played his first All Golds’
game following a short term
loan from Widnes last week.
The hooker suffered a nasty
cut to his head on Good Friday
but is expected to feature in
Newcastle won’t have great
memories of their last visit to
Cheltenham - last summer
they were defeated 26-10
by the Golden Fern who
put in their best 80 minute
performance of the season.
Thunder Head Coach Mick
he’ll
has confirmed
be making a
few changes
from their
previous
outing - a
creditable draw away to
Barrow Raiders. The team
from the North East, who beat
Leigh Miners Rangers in the
previous round, will be looking
to make it through to a second
successive semi final in the iPro
ALL GOLDS vs.
COVENTRY BEARS REPORT
THE RETURN OF THE NATIVE
ALL GOLDS 28-29 COVENTRY BEARS
Friday 25th March, Prince of Wales Stadium, Cheltenham
WRITTEN BY CHRIS WILSON
14
Former All Gold Joel James saved
his best game for the Bears so far
for his return to Gloucestershire.
He kicked four goals from five
attempts as well as the crucial
drop goal just 30 seconds from
full time to earn his side their first
league win of the season.
Having beaten the Bears
handsomely in the iPro Sport Cup
in February and recorded a club
record 66-6 win at the PoW last
season, the All Golds were full
of confidence coming into this
game.
However, things didn’t go to plan
and coach Lee Greenwood was
left fuming after the final whistle.
“We weren’t good enough,” was
his simple analysis. He described
the defensive frailties of his side
as being down to “laziness and
attitude”. “You get what you
deserve in this sport,” he said,
“and we did tonight.”
the 16-6 lead was not as emphatic
as it could have been.
A score from Eddie Medforth
early in the second period put
the Bears in the hunt and even
though Davies added a penalty,
the absence of Joe McClean, who
was sin-binned for a high tackle,
allowed the Bears to pile on the
pressure.
Hayden Freeman levelled the
scores and Matt Reid gave them
the lead in the space of four
minutes around the hour mark as
the game rose to a thrilling climax.
Chris Barlow scored to level
things up again but Richie Hughes
wrestled over out wide and James
struck a superb conversion from
the touchline for a 28-22 lead.
Parry drove over for his second
try after the All Golds recovered
the restart and Davies levelled
the scores again but the All Golds
failed to set up for a drop goal
and the Bears’ last possession
saw them set up the position for
James to win the game.
TEAM: Brendon Newton; Chris
Barlow(t), Josh Allison, Brad
Kislingbury, Phil Cowburn;
Courtney Davies(t,4g); Jayson
Lombardo; Ollie Purslow, Steve
Parry(2t), Harrison Elliott; Lewis
Reece, Joe McClean; Emmerson
Whittel;
SUBS (ALL USED): Almer
Tagayuna, Lamont Bryan(t), Alex
Davidson, Morgan Evans.
It looked promising in the opening
ten minutes when Courtney
Davies stole the ball from Jamahl
Hunte to score and Steve Parry
bulldozed his way over from 10
metres out but Jack Morrison
pulled a score back for the
Bears shortly afterwards. Even
though Lamont Bryan opened
his account for the club with a
try supplied by new signing from
Widnes Vikings Almer Tagayuna,
WHO NEEDS CHOCOLATE WHEN YOU’VE GOT THE NRL?
Easter in the NRL opened
with chants of “Bulldogs!
ANZ stadium in Sydney from
many of the 38,000 fans and
no wonder as Canterbury
Hollywood’s Russell Crowe’s
A unique feature of matches
in Australasia is the number
of fans’ placards and banners
and 46,000 packed Suncorp
for the Grand Final re-match
of the big Queensland clash
between the Broncos and
encounter saw the teams
locked up at 20 each at full
time. Another Englishman
this is?!
The commentator said:” Can
you believe what we have
referring to the dramatic late
winning try by Gold Coast
success. Even so there was a
delightful English duet that
saw Josh Hodgson combine
with Elliott Whitehead
for the latter’s first NRL
Super Saturday continued
with another epic at Allianz
as Luke Burgess’ Manly Sea
against the Roosters despite
a brace for Kiwi international
was the place to be on
Easter Sunday. St George
Illawarra Dragons hosted
Penrith Panthers in another
all-Sydney battle at this
spectacular venue where the
Auckland as local favourites
New Zealand Warriors
basement. The Vodafone
Warriors were at their best
and when in such a mood
are sport’s equivalent of
Broadway or the West
with another splendid
four-pointer but Shaun
hypnotised a whole posse of
Knights’ defenders to score
a try that left the crowd
gasping in admiration. 40-18.
Across the Tasman, 36,000
watched a clash of the West
Parramatta Eels continued
their winning sequel with an
Hankook Monday Night
Football brought the curtain
down on a memorable
holiday programme in
Australasia. Not many tipped
the Sharkies of Cronulla to
come home over the top of
much-fancied Melbourne
Storm but that is precisely
what happened. There are
no better visions than Ben
Easter in Europe was not to
be outdone with magnificent
concluded in Perpignan in
the shadow of the Pyrenees
before a big and colourful
moved into the top four
with a 41-22 win against
Castleford.
PATHWAY TO
PROFESSIONAL GAME
BEGINS FOR TALENTED
YOUNG PLAYERS
THE ROAD TO THE ALL GOLDS FIRST TEAM AND BEYOND
HAS BEGUN FOR NEARLY 80 GLOUCESTERSHIRE
YOUNGSTERS WHO ATTENDED THE CLUB’S FIRST
EVER PLAYER DEVELOPMENT DAYS HOSTED AT THE
UNIVERSITY’S OXSTALLS CAMPUS LAST WEEK.
18
These events were the first of
three opportunities this year that
the All Golds will be running as
part of the RFL’s “Embed the
Pathway” programme.
This Programme aims to provide
a clear and consistent route for
all young players from schools’
Rugby League through to the
full England team via the sport’s
professional clubs.
The two days, with Year 7 and
8 players being hosted on 22nd
March and Years 9-11 visiting on
the 24th, had player education
elements alongside athletic
testing and on-field technical
sessions.
The athletic testing elements
were run by Dr Jonathan Hughes,
head of the University’s strength
and conditioning MSc course,
supported by undergraduate and
post graduate students from the
university.
The data collected on each player
will not only serve to provide
information on development within
the club’s pathway but will also
form part of a wider study by one
of the game’s great organisations,
Brisbane Broncos.
The NRL giants are in the process
of working on their own talent
identification programme and have
linked with the university to develop
this.
Players underwent a number of
tests and measurements and will
be retested in July, as well as in
subsequent years, to see their
progression.
In terms of player education, both
www.allgoldsrugby.com

groups looked at player profiling,
with advice on how they could
each assess and develop their own
performance, with the University’s
Mark Jeffreys and Anthony
Atherton delivering across the two
days.
The older group also had the
opportunity to have a seminar on
nutrition, run by Dr Matt Cole, which
looked at what foods are needed
by elite athletes to fuel their bodies.
On the field, the players were
coached by members of the All
Golds’ community coaching team
in a number of areas including
play the ball, decision-making and
tackle technique.
Initially taking part in a rotation
of three activities, the coaches
also used the technical sessions
to embed mental skills such as
“coping with contact” and “being
honest about my performance”
within the drills.
Finishing the day with a rotation
of three modified games, the
players were able to put their skills
to the test and implement some
of what they’d learned.
Reflecting on the success of
the two events Talent Pathway
Manager for the All Golds, Dan
Garbutt, was keen to stress the
importance of everyone’s input in
the delivery of the days:
“It’s events like this that show
just how uniquely beneficial it
is for the club to be owned and
operated by a University and the
support we’ve had from a number
of academic departments, as well
as staff from across the institution,
has been amazing.
“The resource we have available to
us in terms of facilities, equipment
and, most of all, people is what
sets us apart.” Connor Thompson,
Head of Rugby at Archway
School, one of the five schools
who brought players along, was
keen to praise the event saying:
“It was a fantastic day for the
boys who got a great all round
experience of what Rugby League
is all about. The organisation and
events put on were all excellent,
with the manner of the coaches
being superb”
Nick Dill, of St Peter’s High School
was equally supportive:
“The boys learnt a great deal and
enjoyed the sessions. From a
school point of view the day was
a good opportunity for CPD and
ideas-sharing. As a teacher I wish
we could have brought more of
our players.”
The All Golds will host its next
player development day, open
to all players as well as those
who attended the initial days, on
Sunday 22nd May at the Prince
of Wales Stadium in Cheltenham.
The event will take place prior
to the first team’s game against
Hunslet Hawks and will start at
10.30am.
For more information players
can contact Dan Garbutt on
dgarbutt@glos.ac.uk and register
to attend. There will be a final
development day opportunity in
July hosted back at the university.
WEST OF ENGLAND
UPDATE WRITTEN BY CHRIS WILSON
EXPANDED LEAGUE TO
GET UNDERWAY IN MAY
The West of England Rugby
League has doubled in size ahead
of 2016 with the addition of five
new teams to the division.
20
Gloucestershire Warriors and
Oxford Cavaliers both return
to the league after spells in the
Conference League South and
they are joined by newcomers
Forest Bulldogs who played a
number of friendlies last year and
will be tasting competitive Rugby
League action for the first time
in 2016.
The line-up is completed by
Southampton Spitfires and US
Portsmouth Seahawks who have
joined from the Southern Leagues.
The increase in teams has led to a
new format being introduced with
the teams splitting initially into
two groups of five, before coming
together for crossover fixtures
and play offs, leading to a double
Grand Final.
The Warriors were West of
England champions in 2014
and have been placed in a pool
containing rivals Bristol Sonics,
defending champions Bath
& Wiltshire Romans, Oxford
Cavaliers (2012 champions)
as well as 2015 South East
division champions Portsmouth
Seahawks.
Meanwhile, Cheltenham Phoenix,
champions in 2013, will face the
newcomers Forest Bulldogs,
Swindon St George, Somerset
Vikings and the Southampton
Spitfires in the other pool.
The first round of league fixtures
will take place on 14 May, with
cross-pool games scheduled for
25 June and 30 July with the
playoffs starting on 6 August
POOL 1
• Bath & Wiltshire Romans
• Bristol Sonics
• Gloucestershire Warriors
• Oxford Cavaliers
• US Portsmouth Seahawks
POOL 2
• Cheltenham Phoenix
• Forest Bulldogs
• Somerset Vikings
• Southampton Spitfires
• Swindon St George
There will be no change in the
South West League, with Cornish
Rebels, Exeter Centurions, Devon
Sharks, Plymouth Titans and
North Devon Raiders all set to
battle it out for honours again in
2016.
Both campaigns will be opened
with a Nines Event.
The South West Nines will take
place at Exeter University on
Sunday 1 May 2016.
The West of England season
starts on the following weekend
with the second annual West of
England Nines, which again will be
hosted by Swindon St George on
Saturday 7 May.
ALL GOLDS CLS vs.
COVENTRY BEARS
PREVIEW
ALL GOLDS CLS LOOK TO
EXCEL AT COVENTRY
WRITTEN BY CHRIS WILSON
AFTER WEEKS OF TRAINING ON COLD, DARK EVENINGS, THE MOMENT
OF TRUTH FINALLY ARRIVES THIS WEEKEND AS THE ALL GOLDS CLS SIDE
TAKES TO THE FIELD FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A COMPETITIVE GAME WHEN
THEY TRAVEL TO THE EXCEL LEISURE CENTRE TO TAKE ON COVENTRY
BEARS RESERVES.
Alex Davidson’s side has played
two warm-up games against
sides which both posed a
physical challenge to his players:
“The RLC game was a great
physical test for the boys and set
a benchmark for where we need
to be physically and what the
boys need to be able to defend
against,” said Davidson. “Should
any of the boys progress up the
pathway they will face similar
physicality in League 1 so they
need to be prepared”.
To their credit the players have
responded and held their own
against both Cardiff City and
the Royal Logistic Corps. A
five-try win over the Welsh
side was followed by four more
touchdowns in defeat against
the RLC who were able to field
a supremely fit, big and strong
side.
“The game against the RLC also
showed us our current shortfalls,”
Davidson added. “We are
working hard to expel these from
our game to make us a tough
force to face in the CLS. Once we
tighten up our defence, we have
shown we are capable of getting
over the line having scored 22
points last time out”.
The Bears are the reserve side to
the League 1 team and finished
in fourth place in the table last
season despite suffering an
injury crisis towards the end of
the season that resulted in their
withdrawal from the play-offs
after winning ten of their 16
fixtures.
That included a 56-10 win over
the Gloucestershire Warriors at
Oxstalls which saw a number of
current Bears first teamers take
their bows with Eddie Medforth,
James Geurtjens, Gioele Celerino
(who is now at Newcastle
Thunder), Jamahl Hunte and
Jason Bass all involved. There are
likely to be players involved this
weekend who are pushing for a
first team place with the Bears.
In action for the Warriors against
the Bears last year, captain
Connor Jones, Liam Rice-Wilson
and Hector Silva, are likely to be
in contention for selection for the
CLS side this week while Harry
Kidd, Luke Stephens and Brad
Kislingbury have all gained callups
to the All Golds’ first team
and Yannic Parker is currently
with South Wales Scorpions.
As for the All Golds, Davidson
was looking forward to a
dilemma this weekend: “The
lads have given me selection
headaches by picking up good
form in the two friendlies. This
being the case, the 17 chosen to
play on Saturday have players
breathing down their necks. The
best way of developing is by
playing and the boys need to
put a good show in to get that
opportunity.”
Davidson will select his squad
of 17 from the following: Andy
Gamble, Archie Gibbs, Brandon
Denton, Callum Bradbury,
Connor Jones, Connor Whittall,
Dieter Thomas, Dom Tydeman,
Hanley Dawson, Hector Silva,
Jack Binks, Jack Uren, James
Mason, Joe Festa, Joe Rider,
Jono Hinton, Josh Du Plessis,
Kaine Dimech, Lewis McKissick,
Liam Rice Wilson, Richard Jones,
Rory Sharratt, Ryan Tanner,
Sam Hodge, Sean Apperley-
Jones, Stef Archer, Wijnand
ALL GOLDS CLS vs. RLC REPORT
THE LONG
GOOD FRIDAY
ALL GOLDS CLS 22-40 ROYAL LOGISTIC CORPS
Friday 25 March, Prince of Wales Stadium, Cheltenham
WRITTEN BY CHRIS WILSON
24
For the second time, Alex
Davidson’s CLS squad stood
up to a physical battering to
put up an impressive display
that gives optimism for the
season ahead.
Though beaten on the
scoreboard, there were plenty
of things to admire not least
the way the team came back
from an early 14-0 deficit to
trail by just two at the break.
Tries from Sgt Kimi Vuadrau,
Cpl Lewis Allen and LCpl
Matuwalu Sorovakatini and a
goal from Pte Liam Johnson
in the opening quarter had
the Royal Logistic Corps in
charge of the game but the
All Golds battled back, earned
parity in the arm wrestle and
two tries from Dieter Thomas
converted by halfback partner
Archie Gibbs left the half time
score 14-12.
owing much to sheer size and
strength.
The All Golds had the last
word through captain Chris
True who went over after neat
work from Thomas and Gibbs
gave him the opportunity.
Following the final whistle,
the RLC formed a circle and
performed a melodic victory
song in the style of the Fijian
2013 World Cup squad.
Having seen 23 players in
action in the games against
the RLC and Cardiff City,
Davidson has plenty of food
for thought as he ponders
his selection for the opening
Conference League South
game this weekend against
Coventry Bears Reserves.
TEAM: Sam Hodge, Sean
Apperley-Jones, Joe Festa,
Dom Tydeman, Aedan
Coleman, Dieter Thomas (2t),
Archie Gibbs(3g), Callum
Bradbury, Liam Rice-Wilson,
Chris True(t), Connor Jones,
Stef Archer, Jack Binks,
INTERCHANGE: Lewis
McKissick(t), Ryan Tanner,
Jono Hinton, Wijnand
Wormhoudt, Hector Silva
With their Polynesian
complement prominent, the
RLC stretched their lead to
24-12 through Pte Joe Vuwai
and Cpl Alex Iveson before
Lewis McKissick scored in the
corner.
The final quarter belonged
to the military men with tries
from close range by Pte
Epeli Kotobalavu, LCpl Tony
Eccles and LCpl Sikeli Ratu
SUPPORTERS GROUP, LEE RANDALL.
28
HELLO AND WELCOME BACK TO THE PRINCE
OF WALES STADIUM FOR THIS IPRO SPORT CUP
QUARTER FINAL CLASH.
We would like to extend
a warm welcome to our
visitors Newcastle Thunder
and their supporters who
have made the long trip to
Gloucestershire today.
COVENTRY HOME
Last Friday night we played
the Coventry Bears at home
under the lights at the Prince
of Wales Stadium. The game
was preceded by our CLS
side who did themselves and
the club proud in a defeat
to a very strong army side.
The future looks bright with
the heart and passion of the
lads involved. The
first team looked
to continue
an impressive
record against
the Bears only to
come unstuck in
a sloppy game.
A last minute
drop goal from
Joel James, a
former All Gold,
was tough to take.
Let’s hope we can
bounce back this
weekend!
