CONCERTS IN THE PARK SERIES Enjoy free concerts on Stephenson Island from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM on June 7, 2016, July 12, 2016 and August 9, 2016. Marinette Market on Stephenson Island Starting June 3 rd , 2016 Stephenson Island will host Marinette Market every Friday from 2-6pm until October 28 th (weather permitting). Stop by and pick up fresh fruits and vegetables, delicious baked goods, craftsmanship of local artists and other fun or needed products!! More information will be available online at www.marinette.wi.us under “Marinette Market” or on the Facebook page under “City of Marinette”. Marinette Recreation Department Events We’ve got plenty of reasons to get outside and get moving in the New Year! Indoor Tennis and Pickleball Courts are available year-round at the Civic Center Domes. The court rate is $28 per hour, per court for adults, and $16 per hour, per court for students. Court #1 in the Tennis Dome is marked for PICKLE BALL! Regular court fees apply. Balls and paddles available at the front desk, or bring your own. Indoor Walking and Running Don’t let inclement weather ruin your walking or running routine! An indoor facility with an asphalt surface is available at the Civic Center whenever tennis players are not using the courts, beginning at 7:45 AM each day. 10 1/2 laps around the dome equal one mile. There is no charge. Disc Golf Our premier 18-hole course is located at Marinette City Park; the course is FREE for use. Discs are available for use at the Civic Center and can be checked out with a $20.00 per set deposit. The deposit is returned in full when the three-disc set is returned. (Lost discs result in forfeiture of your deposit.) Score cards and course maps are also available at the Civic Center. SUPERVISED PLAYGROUNDS Playgrounds are open to school-aged children ages five and older. Three city-sponsored playgrounds are staffed by supervisors who are trained to offer fun activities for children. The School District of Marinette will provide FREE breakfast and lunch at all sites throughout the summer. Playgrounds will be open for the season June 6 through August 11. Children are free to come and go as they wish, so parents should plan accordingly. This is not a substitute for daycare. It’s an opportunity for supervised play for school-aged children. - There is NO CHARGE for participation in this program. Bend and Stretch Exercise Class features flexibility and floor exercises and incorporates the use of light weights with great success for participants! Class meets Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9:00-9:45 AM at the Duer Gym, 402 Williams Street. Punch cards (7 classes) cost $10.50 for city residents or $16 for non-city residents and are available at the Civic Center. MAKING WAVES -A brief history of the City’s newest sculpture by Professor James LaMalfa Enjoy The Great Wave, an 18 foot sculpture at the intersection of Ely St./Main St./Newberry Av/Church St. The idea for a large laminated wood sculpture was sparked by my viewing of a block print made by the master Japanese wood cut artist Hokusai, entitled “The Great Wave Of Kanagawa”. The print depicts a giant wave about crash down onto a boat with fishermen frantically trying to escape. Mount Fuji sits serenely in the distance. I did not copy the image as much as use the idea of waves to create a drawing then a scale model of the sculpture. I took my idea to City Engineer Brian Miller who approved it, then to the then mayor Denise Ruleau who also approved it. After that I costed out the sculpture and began raising money from donors, among them Bank Mutual, Winsert and myself. Our new mayor Steve Genisot continued the support I enjoyed with Denise. The City contributed to the installation cost once the piece had been completed. I worked closely with the good folks at Wildlife Décor LLC, highway 64 and Andreas Rhude at Sentinel Structures, Peshtigo to create the piece. The City Council of Marinette and the Civic Affairs Committee were also involved. Once the laminated southern yellow pine elements of the piece were cut out and delivered to the City’s wood shop Brian contacted Mike Beal to plan the installation of the piece which is made up of sections of treated wood and stainless steel. We were able to work into November 2015 because of the mild fall weather. The piece is totally finished with the installation of lights at the base that illuminate the sculpture at night and dramatically highlight its flowing lines. As an artist I particularly enjoy designing public art so that all the public may enjoy it not just gallery goers. I created a large stainless steel fish sculpture at Menominee’s Waterfront Park, two pieces on the Fine Art’s Building at the UW and murals in both City Halls. I am presently working with the City of Marinette and Marinette Marine to design and place a new stainless steel sculpture near Marinette Marine illustrating LCS 5, the USS Milwaukee, a welder, logger and our lighthouse. ~ Professor James LaMalfa, emeritus, UW Photo of our local artist Jim LaMalfa in front of “Waves” Sculpture
