Hum is often referred to as the smallest town in the world. It has
only 17 inhabitants and preserved city institutions. It is located in
central Istria, 14 kilometers southeast of Buzet.
Inside the preserved city walls are two small streets, the
parish church of the Assumption of Mary was built in 1802,
a Romanesque church OF St. Jerome from the 12th century,
decorated with frescoes under Byzantine influence, with many
Glagolitic inscriptions and graffiti from Master Anthony of Padua.
Hum has preserved the tradition “of choosing the prefect for
a year”. All the men of the parish in the town loggia vote on a
wooden stick for its candidate.
It is famous for its Glagolitic Alley. Hum gate, through which you
enter in Hum, is the last feature of the mentioned Alley. The doors
are metal, and around knob there are twelve medallions depicting
months.
