These <strong>in</strong>fights <strong>in</strong> the Middle East and Europe had its repercussions <strong>in</strong> <strong>India</strong><br />

too. There exists a Chaldean church with few follow<strong>in</strong>gs even today, though<br />

majority <strong>of</strong> the Christian churches rema<strong>in</strong>ed faithful to the declarations <strong>of</strong><br />

Nicea and Ephesus.<br />

A.D 510 - 1439<br />

The Christian Dynasty <strong>of</strong> Villarvattom<br />

By this period, the great Empire <strong>of</strong> the Chera K<strong>in</strong>gdom came to ru<strong>in</strong>s and an<br />

immense number <strong>of</strong> small <strong>in</strong>dependent K<strong>in</strong>gdoms came <strong>in</strong>to existence. Their<br />

extents were limited. Thus the areas where Christians were <strong>in</strong> prom<strong>in</strong>ence<br />

established themselves <strong>in</strong>to K<strong>in</strong>gdoms. Christians were traditionally good<br />

statesmen and warriors. Though there might have been several such centers <strong>of</strong><br />

strong hold <strong>of</strong> Christians <strong>in</strong> Kerala, one particular Villarvattom K<strong>in</strong>gdom is<br />

mentioned <strong>of</strong>ten. This K<strong>in</strong>gdom Villarvattom Pana extended from the coastal<br />

islands <strong>of</strong> Chennamangalam, Maliankara and others to the north <strong>of</strong> and south<br />

<strong>of</strong> Udayamperoor. The capital <strong>of</strong> this k<strong>in</strong>gdom was at mahadevarpattanam <strong>in</strong><br />

the island <strong>of</strong> Chennamangalam and later it was shifted to Udayamperoor when<br />

the Arab <strong>in</strong>vaders attached the island. The Udayamperror Church, which<br />

stands even today was built by Raja <strong>of</strong> Villarvottam <strong>in</strong> A.D 510. There are<br />

several <strong>in</strong>scriptions <strong>in</strong> this church that supports this <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the mention <strong>of</strong><br />

one Raja Thomas who ruled <strong>in</strong> AD 900. Pope John XXII <strong>in</strong> his letter sent with<br />

Friar Jordan address himself to the successor <strong>of</strong> Raja Thomas <strong>in</strong> A.D 1330<br />

Later <strong>in</strong> A.D 43 Pope Eugene IV addresses to Raja Thomas <strong>in</strong> A.D 1439. The<br />

papal record mentions "that there is a K<strong>in</strong>gdom twenty days journey from<br />

Cathay, <strong>of</strong> which the k<strong>in</strong>g and all the <strong>in</strong>habitants are Christians, but heretics,<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g said to be Nestorians." "Historia de Variatate Fortunae, liv. IV, Poggi<br />

Bracciol<strong>in</strong>i , Secretary to Pope Eugenius IV) Though there are several<br />
