Tommy Dodson
Born in Ft. Scott, Kansas, he grew up listening to Rock
‘n’ Roll artists like James Brown and Little Richard.
Because his father was a jazz saxophonist, he also listened
to the greats of his era, such as Nat “King” Cole,
Sarah Vaughn and Ella Fitzgerald. Early on he began
piano lessons and soon was playing for and singing in
his church’s gospel choir. He formed his own combo at
the age of 12 and toured Southern Kansas, Missouri,
Oklahoma and Arkansas. At 14, Tommy moved to Los
Angeles, attending Dorsey High and graduating from
Los Angeles High School. He then attended Los Angeles
City College for two years and Cal State L.A. for another
two, majoring in music.
For several years he worked in clubs in Southern California,
performing with groups, as well as working as a
solo artist in piano bars.
Many have compared his jazz singing and cabaret style
to those of the late Bobby Short and Nat “King” Cole.
For four years he traveled with Crystal Cruise Lines,
performing nightly in their Avenue Saloon—a luxuriously
appointed lounge and piano bar. He also produced,
arranged and performed one-man cabaret shows with
the ship’s orchestra on “the big stage.” Over those four
years he set foot in nearly every port in the world that
welcomes large ocean liners. In addition, he was requested
to be a lead entertainer on two 180-day World
Cruises.
Currently he performx in local piano clubs in the Los
Angeles area, as well as at private parties from Beverly
Hills to Palm Springs to the greater San Francisco area.
In collaboration with the noted lyricist Curtis Long, he
has written the music to three musicals: Playing The
Game; Booze, Blues and Attitude; and David and Jonathan.
“We have also collaborated on songs for several
of my albums. My music can be heard on local radio
and television stations in Pasadena and San Diego.”
