Growing up, I found that my happy place was while listening to music, writing songs, and taking countless<br />
photographs! Today, I still possess this exact passion. When my art is on display, many people are immediately<br />
inspired and connected to my story. From the outside looking in, there will always be someone who is inspired<br />
by your art. So I learned to never stop creating!<br />
What is art? My definition of art would be defined as freedom. Art has no boundaries! You can express yourself<br />
in any given form of creativity; whether through painting, poetry, music, makeup, how you dress, design, architecture,<br />
or even photography! There are countless ways to express yourself, and all are classified as a work of<br />
art. Whatever hobby you do that makes you happy, also makes you feel free! Art communicates where words<br />
are unable to illustrate. It enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves all at once. Art is not what we see, but<br />
what we make others see. A life lived for art, is never a life wasted!<br />
It is always a pleasure to feature such amazing talent in our publication! This issue is very different than what we<br />

<strong>XANDER</strong> <strong>MAGAZINE</strong>: Give us your history. (Where you’re based & how long you’ve been in the industry of art?)<br />
JOLANDA VAN MERINGEN: I am still quite new to this industry. However, if we are talking about being professionally active,<br />
I am based in Amsterdam. I started two years ago while studying at the University of Arts in Rotterdam. I’m still learning and<br />
making mistakes. The most important thing is that I’m growing, and my technique is getting better. I’ve done work for brands<br />
like, H&M and Heineken. I have also done work for several International magazines. So, I am quite happy that I have had<br />
these great opportunities already, and I am looking forward to new and inspiring collaborations in the future.<br />
<strong>XANDER</strong> <strong>MAGAZINE</strong>: Who or what is your art inspiration?<br />
JOLANDA VAN MERINGEN: This is a difficult one because I am inspired by a lot of things. But layers, composition, colours,<br />
and faces, are very important in my work. I’m always trying to find the right balance between different elements. Also artists<br />
like, Ernesto Artillo and Ashkan Honarvar, are a big inspiration to me.<br />
<strong>XANDER</strong> <strong>MAGAZINE</strong>: How long does it typically take to create your artwork?<br />
JOLANDA VAN MERINGEN: It depends if it is a commission or just a piece that I made because I felt like creating. When it’s<br />
a commissioned piece, it is a work that is more conceptual, so it takes more time doing research and finding the elements,<br />
which will be a part of the end piece. My collages are sometimes made digitally, which takes less time in comparison to my<br />
handmade work. I have to cut everything out by hand, and if there is an element with a lot of corners, it’s more difficult. It<br />
could take anywhere from 30 minutes to 15 hours, or even more.<br />
<strong>XANDER</strong> <strong>MAGAZINE</strong>: What was the most challenging project you’ve experienced? How did you overcome that obstacle?<br />
JOLANDA VAN MERINGEN: The Heineken project was quite challenging for me because there where too many parties<br />
involved. Cutting some of the parties and creating my own concept instead of trying to recreate a certain type of image, made<br />
me overcome that obstacle.<br />
<strong>XANDER</strong> <strong>MAGAZINE</strong>: What is the most successful piece you’ve created or sold?<br />
JOLANDA VAN MERINGEN: For me, a piece is successful when I’m very happy with it, even when it is not sold. It is usually<br />
a piece that I find hard to let go of (haha); maybe that’s why it’s not sold. I really love my handmade pieces that are created<br />
with images of botanical prints and male models, out of Whitelies Magazine. I used a lot of layers in this project, which provides<br />
tactility.
<strong>XANDER</strong> <strong>MAGAZINE</strong>: How can everyone get in contact to view and purchase your artwork? Where is it sold?<br />
JOLANDA VAN MERINGEN: Currently, I’m working on my webshop, which will be part of my website,<br />
www.jolandavanmeringen.com. It’s not open yet, but if people are interested in a piece that they have seen<br />
on the internet, in magazines, or on my Instagram, they can contact me by email at j.v.meringen@gmail.com.<br />
Now and then my work is also for sale during expositions based in Amsterdam.<br />
<strong>XANDER</strong> <strong>MAGAZINE</strong>: Do have any upcoming projects?<br />
JOLANDA VAN MERINGEN: I have some collaboration projects coming up with Dutch Photographers, Ruud Janssen and<br />
Stef Lohstroh.<br />
<strong>XANDER</strong> <strong>MAGAZINE</strong>: For aspiring artists around the world, what type of advice would you give to succeed within this<br />
industry?<br />
JOLANDA VAN MERINGEN: Always stay true to yourself, even if this means that you think you are letting some important<br />
opportunities pass by. Keep your integrity, and only say yes to projects that really give you a good feeling. There will always be<br />
new opportunities that are right for you and your happiness. It’s not about gaining a lot of money or becoming famous quickly,<br />
but about doing something that you really love to do, and can’t live without.<br />
<strong>XANDER</strong> <strong>MAGAZINE</strong>: What are your dreams and aspirations for your brand? (Where do you see yourself in 5 years?)<br />
JOLANDA VAN MERINGEN: I would love to be represented by an artist rep internationally, collaborating with people,<br />
brands, and magazines that inspire me.<br />
<strong>XANDER</strong> <strong>MAGAZINE</strong>: What is your typical day as an artist?<br />
JOLANDA VAN MERINGEN: My typical day as an artist is actually never typical. Sometimes I work in the night, and sometimes<br />
in the afternoon. It really depends on when I feel inspired, or when I am able to get into my flow. I never work a whole<br />
day on my art, because I need diversity. So, I combine it with working out in the gym, kickboxing, going out with friends,<br />
watching movies, and some reading.<br />
<strong>XANDER</strong> <strong>MAGAZINE</strong>: What is your preferred creative environment for creating your art? (How would you describe the perfect<br />
environment/setting for endless creativity? Do you listen to music as you create, maybe drink wine? Give us the details!)<br />
JOLANDA VAN MERINGEN: I prefer to work in my living room with the window open. I live on the 10th floor, so I here all<br />
kinds of sounds, but never too clear what it really is. I am usually behind the computer or sitting on the floor, with Spotify<br />
playing Discover Weekly. I love to hear new songs that I have never heard before while I am working. I don’t eat or drink; I just<br />
simply try to lose myself in my work.<br />
