John’s Jottings
Welcome to Woodstock Park from The Club Secretary
Hello everybody. This is a joint programme to cover both the Hythe Town and Faversham Town
games. Welcome to Woodstock to the Hythe Town and Faversham Town players, official and
supporters, our own supporters and todays officials. Special thanks to Sparshatts Sittingbourne
for sponsoring the Faversham game. Sparshatts are the local Mercedez Benz Truck and van
supplier based on the Eurolink.
We went down 5-3 to Walton Casuals at Merstham a couple of weeks ago and this result carried
on with our usual sequence of Win, lose, Win, Lose etc, however without a “no decision”
from the referee when Jack Steventon was fouled things could have been different!
The last home match saw us play Peacehaven & Telscombe. Peacehaven have had a turbulent
recent history. They were relegated from the Ryman Premier League last season and then their
Chairman and benefactor passed away in mid season causing funding to be drastically reduced.
They are now only able to pay their players minimal expenses. This has caused the majority of
experienced players to leave for other clubs. Particularly in the first half our quality showed and
it looked like "men against boys". Certainly Sittingbourne should have had more than a 2-0 half
time lead to show for their efforts. The second half was somewhat of a Ryan Burbridge show.
The Peacehaven goalkeeper, who had a trial at Sittingbourne at the beginning of this season,
was superb and was instrumental in keeping the score respectable. Peacehaven are a prime
example of why clubs should not rely on one person to bankroll a club.
New signing Adam Allen had an excellent debut. Adam Allen is Nick Davis's third signing in as
many weeks in preparation for next season. The other two, Scott Whibley and Tom Carlse have
already become supporters favourites and have certainly improved the team.
The highlight of the Peacehaven match was probably when 16 years old Jake Embery came on
for only his second substitute appearance and within seconds, and with his first touch of the
game, blasted the ball into the Peacehaven net from a difficult angle. Jake is the son of Sittingbourne’s
ex QPR Under 18 and Under 21 manager John Embery.
Our last match saw us gain a good draw at Chipstead, a side that put 6 passed us here at
Woodstock earlier in the season.
Finally many congratulations to our under 18’s side for defeating Dover Athletic 4-2 at Homelands
to win the under 18 Kent Cup. More about
this later on in the programme.
HYTHE TOWN A BRIEF HISTORY
Hythe Town Football Club was formed in August 1910
and started playing in the local junior leagues. After the
First World War the club soon joined the Kent Amateur
League with limited success. This continued until the
1970's when the club won the league title three times in
succession and won the Kent Junior Cup. Hythe were
granted senior status and elected to the Kent League in
1977, playing at the newly-acquired Reachfields, an old
army training ground on the edge of the town’s firing
ranges. The club were runners-up in the Kent League on
three occasions but it was not until property developer
Tony Walton took over Hythe Town in February 1988
that things really started to happen.
That summer saw the ground developed to Southern
League standard with seats and a social club, with viewing
balconies, above new dressing rooms. Standing cover
extended behind one goal and for the whole of the far
side, and floodlights were installed. The ground capacity
still remains at 3,000 with the majority under cover.
Town won the Kent League title by 14 points and set a
league record of 133 goals. The club gained promotion
to the Southern League.
The next season saw the club reach the FA Vase semifinals
losing out to the eventual winners Yeading, winning
the home leg 3-2 in front of the club’s record
attendance of 2,147, but cruelly losing the second leg 2-
0. They did win the Eastern Professional Floodlight Cup
at their first attempt.
In 1991/2 money was beginning to run out and the club
was put into liquidation.
Supporters rallied round and entered a scratch side, as
Hythe United, into the following season’s Kent County
League and negotiated continued use of Reachfields Stadium.
After three seasons the club regained senior status
and in 1995 were elected back into the Kent League
where the club struggled for a number of seasons. In
2001 Hythe dropped the “United” suffix, reverting to
“Town” and in November 2002 appointed Paul Fisk as
Manager. Paul Fisk stepped down at the end of the season
due to the illness of his wife Pam and assistant,
Scott Porter took over as manager for the 2009-10 season
with the help of Clive Cook and Martin Chandler.
The 2010/11 season was possibly the most successful in
the history of the club, with Scott Porter and his management
team, winning promotion to the Ryman League
and negotiating their way through six rounds of the FA
Cup, before losing in the first round away to League Two
side Hereford United.
The 2011/12 season saw the club defeat Dartford at
Princes Park by a single goal to lift the Kent Senior Cup
for the first time ever, beating Ebbsfleet utd and Dover
Athletic on the way.
Captain Dave Cook secured the Ryman South Golden
Boot during season 2012/13 with a brilliant twentyseven
league goals, the midfielder also being named in
the Ryman South 'Team of the Year.' The season ended
with the resignation of long-serving Chairman, Paul
Markland with John Dowsett taking over.
Despite flirting with relegation for the first ever time
during the 2013/14 season Manager Scott Porter, freshened
up his squad one final time to produce a stunning
run of results to end the season in eighth place but Porter
resigned at the end of the season deciding that he
had taken the club as far as he could.
Former Ramsgate manager Tim Dixon took over as manager
for the 2014/15 season. The campaign began with
an attractive brand of football, but a n injury crisis hampered
the progress of the new set-up. Key new signings
and some much-improved form in the New Year comfortably
saw off the threat of relegation, as the newly
nicknamed ‘Cannons’ secured a record fifth consecutive
season in the Ryman South.
Sadly Dixon’s reign came to an end as the 2015/16 campaign
began with a twelve game winless run, the Board
of Directors appointing former Assistant Manager Clive
Cook (who for a short time joint-managed the side with
Tony Beckingham).
Cook, with the support of Assistant Manager Mark Lane,
has now overseen an impressive rebuilding process.

FAVERSHAM TOWN A BRIEF HISTORY
The club's origins go back to 1884, and subsequently
entered the Kent League in 1894. The club name
however was not really consistent, and turned out
as Faversham Town, Faversham Invicta, Faversham
Services, Faversham Railway and Faversham
Rangers along with others, before being disbanded
a few years before the second world war.
Faversham Town reformed after the war, and entered
the Kent League in 1947, and moved to their
current home, Salters Lane in 1948. The club had a
decent amateur side, but found the going tough
against some of the professional Kent League
clubs. Nevertheless, they won the Kent Amateur
Cup in 1957 and 1959.
With the Kent League folding in 1959, the club had
spells in both the Aetolian and Greater London
leagues. However, the revived Kent league was
joined in 1968. Success soon followed, and they
were Kent League champions in 1970 and 1971.
The Kent Amateur Cup was won three years in a
row, 1972, 1973 and 1974.
After a brief flirtation in the Athenian League in the
mid seventies, the club came home to the
Kent League, winning the Kent Senior Trophy in
1977, repeating this success the following season
and being crowned Kent League champions for
good measure in a remarkable "double".
The Kent League was won yet again in 1990 season,
but league form dipped in the 92/93 season
and was to stay that way for several seasons. The
team did manage to reach the final of the Kent
League Challenge Cup in 2000, but things were in
rapid decline. Matters reached crisis point in 2003,
when the KCFA suspended the club for non payment
of fines, with the club's operators blaming just
about everyone for the mess except themselves.
In the following months, the once proud Salters
Lane was systematically wrecked by vandals.
Meanwhile, the club trustees led by businessman
Ray Leader, fought a desperate battle to heal a widening
rift with the previous regime over the ownership
of the club and ground.
In a separate development, the Faversham Town
Independent Supporters Club had been formed, and
quickly gained a membership of over 300 paid up
members in the town. This was despite the fact the
club had no team, no manager, and whose ground
had been totally wrecked by vandals and resembled
a bomb site! Perhaps the real turning point came
when trustees and Independent Supporters committee
members got together one evening and declared
an alliance to get the club back on its feet. An
interim club committee was formed, and the long
road to recovery was started.
The revival was slow, but things started to happen.
The ownership dispute was finally settled, and access
to the ground was obtained. Volunteer workers
however were confronted with completely smashed
and vandalised buildings, and grass that reached
shoulder height in places on what had been the
pitch. A massive clear up operation began, but it
was back breaking work. Meanwhile, paperwork
was put in order with a new club constitution written
and agreed.
The KCFA allowed the club to retain their coveted
senior status, subject to several conditions. Local
authority grants were applied for and secured, sponsorship
deals were obtained, and the club embarked
on a range of fund raising initiatives. Slowly but
surely, Salters Lane emerged in its former glory,
and then went even better with the erection of brand
new floodlights. The revival of club and ground from
the jaws of death was nothing short of a miracle,
with a story that would surely rival the efforts to revive
both "The Valley" at Charlton, and Accrington
Stanley F.C.
The first season back in 05/06 was in the Kent
County League, where the runners up spot was
achieved. Having passed various ground inspections,
promotion to the Kent League was obtained,
and Faversham Town had at last "come home".
The Club returned to winning ways in season
2009/10 doing the double winning the Kent Senior
Trophy and being crowned Kent League Premier
Division Champions.
Season 2010/11 saw the Club compete in the Ryman
League South for the first time finishing as top
Kent club in eighth spot. The following season the
Club consolidated its Ryman place and finished the
season in 17 th spot.
Season 2012/13 was the most successful in the
Club’s history with a third place finish in the Ryman
League South and a runners-up place in the play
offs. Coupled with this the Club’s Under 18s were
runners up in their division of the Ryman Youth
League and put their names in the Club’s record
books by reaching the second round proper of the
FA Youth Cup.
The 2014/15 Season saw Town make the play-offs
again, this time losing out in the Semi-Final on penalties
against eventually promoted Merstham. The
Under 21s had one of their most successful seasons,
winning the Kent Intermediate Cup.

From the Programme editor
This a dual programme covering both the Hythe Town and Faversham games—mainly as two home
games in a row means that there just isn’t time to produce two completely different programmes.
A huge thanks to Sparshatts of Sittingbourne for sponsoring the Faversham Town match. Sparshatts
are the largest Mercedes Truck and van dealership in the South East and have a great range of vehicles
for lease or for sale so if you are in the market for one then please visit them at Unit 10 Eurolink Industrial
Centre, Eurolink, Castle Road, ME10 3RN, telephone 01795 479 571. They also supply and fit parts.
The fight for who is to join our league next year from the Southern Counties East Football League is still
not settled with the two main contenders, Hollands & Blair and Greenwich Borough , fighting out a 0-0
stalemate It was amazing to see that the crowd for that one at Hollands & Blair (Rainham Mark) was just
over 400. The teams that will be replaced include Peacehaven & Telscombe, and Whitstable Town, relegation
being confirmed for them this week. The other team to be relegated will be either East Grinstead
Town, Walton & Hersham or Chipstead with my money being on Walton & Hersham. Of course we cant
always second guess the make up of our step 4 leagues next year but certainly having either Hollands &
Blair or Greenwich Borough in our league means that the chance of us having to go in the Ryman league
Division 1 North section recedes slightly (as they are
nearer to the Dartford crossing!)
Congratulations to Folkestone Invicta for winning the
Ryman Division 1 South championship with 5 games to
go, an amazing achievement. It makes our two close
games against them look even better.! I see that our old
striker, Harry Smith, is still scoring for them, we of
course want him to go to better things so that we can
reap the benefit of our sell on clause that we put on the
transfer! It’s just a shame that we lose we one of a few
money spinning home games!
I was very pleased to see that the reformation of the
supporters club is getting off the ground. A supporters
club for any team can help the committee and the club
in general enormously, so if there is anything that any
committee member can do to help then please let us
know.
Don’t forget the annual presentation event is being held
after the last game of the season on Saturday 23rd
April. Also don’t forget to vote for the players of the season,
voting slips are available from Ken Medwyn.
Finally I want to add my own congratulations to the under
18’s for winning the U18’s Kent Cup by defeating
Dover athletic. More on this later on in the programme.
Under 18’s win the
Kent Reliance U18 Boys Youth Cup Final
John Embery’s and Jermain Darlington’s under 18’s had a magnificent victory
over Dover Athletic’s under 18’s last Sunday at Homelands Ashford to win the
Kent Reliance U18’s boys youth cup final. The team went 2 goals down by half
time but fought back to clinch the cup through 2 goals from Jack Embery (1
pen), Harry Woods, and Edward Bensley. .
Both Josh Wisson and John Embery from the first team squad featured whilst
another under 18’s star Jack Steventon, was rested after turning out for the first
CAN YOU believe the season is on the final straight? Everyone says it every year but this one really has flown by.
It doesn’t seem all that long ago a long summer had finally ended and the season was kicking 0ff.
Now NLP Towers resembles a school maths lesson every Tuesday morning when we get back to our desks after two
days recovering from getting the previous week’s paper out.
It is abacuses and calculators at the ready as we work out who has games in hand over who, when are they playing
and, most importantly, who can win their league at the weekend.
In Sky Sports presenter Jeff Stelling’s recent column for The NLP, he spoke about making sure he’s fully up to speed
with all permutations to ensure he doesn’t promote or relegate a team live on Soccer Saturday by mistake.
Similarly, we want to make sure our photographers are at the right games to get those championship celebration pictures.
Regular readers may have seen we’ve introduced a new feature towards the end of this season – The NLP’s Match
of the Day. It’s what it says on the tin really, but the idea is to highlight a different game each week at all Steps of the
Pyramid.
Our largest 600-plus word reports are usually for National League games, so adding this spread will give more clubs
and their fans the chance to enjoy greater coverage with their sausage sarnie on a Sunday morning.
That’s the beauty of this time of the season, all over the country we’re spoilt for big games with lots riding on them.
At the time of writing, Folkestone Invicta are the first and only champions between Steps 1-4 so far. They won the
Ryman Division One South at a canter and it won’t be long before others are popping the bubbly too.
With that in mind, I went to AFC Sudbury last weekend for The NLP’s Match of the Day to see if they would be
crowned Ryman Division One North champions.
Jamie Godbold’s side did their bit with a 2-1 win against Wroxham but they needed other results to go their way and
nearest challengers Thurrock and Harlow Town didn’t slip up.
So alas, I haven’t reported live on my first champions of the season just yet. But at least we had a photographer
there just in case!
TALKING of celebrations, make sure you get voting for our annual National Game Awards.
Our postman is getting busier and the email inbox is filling up with fans across the country having their say on who
should be at our ceremony in May.
It always proves to be a great day as we recognise players, managers, teams and fans after a long, hard season.
You can see all the categories on our website – thenonleaguefootballpaper.com – as well as voting details.
The awards bash is back at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge this year. The last time was four years ago when Fleetwood
Town’s Jamie Vardy won the player of the year prize. Wonder what happened to him...
A big shout out to the San Jose Earthquakes U13 squad who toured the UK last week. Pictured above
are the team after a 7-1 victory against Sittingbourne F.C. U13s at the University of Kent. The players
from the UK enjoyed meeting their US counterparts in a game arranged by Global Image Sports.

Match Reports
Ryman League Div 1 South
Sittingbourne 3 Peacehaven & Telscombe 0
Att 95
Saturday 26th March 2016
Ryman League Div 1 South
Walton Casuals 5 Sittingbourne 3 Att 61
Sittingbourne started at a high tempo and for 20
minutes tore Peacehaven apart.
Peacehaven are clearly relegation favourites and
Sittingbourne were on fire in this first quarter and
emerged from it with a 2-0 lead that more or less
killed the game.
After the impressive Allen got in a good early shot
and skipper Tom Brunt had a 30-yarder saved, Sittingbourne
took a 12th minute lead. A Peacehaven
defender deflected Steven Ita’s free-kick to Hughes
and when he drove it back across goal Steventon
was in the right place to steer the ball in for his first
goal at home.
Seven minutes later and Sittingbourne were twoup.
Steventon followed up his own long throw with
a pinpoint cross to the far post where the lively
Tom Carlse was unmarked to head comfortably
home, the second home game in a row in which
he’s scored.
Sittingbourne were absolutely on top, pulling the
Peacehaven defence out of position with some
good attacking play, and Steventon was foiled by
the keeper, Ita shot just wide and sub Michael
Hurcombe – on for the injured Wells – had a clever
shot on the turn well saved.
Just towards the end of the half Sittingbourne got
just that bit sloppier in their play, but they still
should have made it 3-0 seconds into the second
half, Hurcombe going clear on Ita’s pass only for
the keeper to rush out of his area and block the
shot. It looked for all the world as if keeper Burbridge,
a one-time Sittingbourne trialist, had used
his arm to make the save but the referee ruled otherwise.
To be fair, it would have been unreasonable to expect
Sittingbourne to have totally dominated for the
whole game, even against weaker opposition than
they usually face.
And they did take their eye off the ball a little bit,
Peacehaven testing Adam Molloy for the first time
in the 63rd minute and then pulling a goal back
soon after when Marshall’s low drive took a deflection
on its way past the keeper.
But Sittingbourne deservedly had the last word,
clinching the victory when young Embery collected
Steventon’s throw, and turned to hammer it in at
the near post.
Sittingbourne: Molloy, Brunt, Lee , Whibley,
Crimmen, Steventon, Allen (Parkinson 85 mins),
Carlse (Embery 79 mins), Wells (Hurcomb 24
mins), Hughes Ita.
Walton Casuals were the better side in the first
half but Sittingbourne turned the tables after
half-time and it was nearly all one-way traffic in
their favour, but Walton did get three of their
goals during that period though in my humble
opinion, and I don’t often criticise referees who
have a hard enough job anyway, I reckon two
of them directly followed the referee getting decisions
wrong.
Steven Ita gave Sittingbourne an early lead
with a 25 yard free kick, but Walton hit back
almost immediately. When skipper Day’s shot
took a slight deflection off Scott Whibley’s attempted
block and into the goal.
On 33 minutes Odunaike got behind the defence
for the first time, anticipating Whibley’s
headed back pass to neatly lob the advancing
Adam Molloy for Walton’s second..
Sittingbourne played well as an attacking force
in the second half, constantly taking the game
to Walton, but they were undone on 73
minutes when Jack Steventon definitely looked
as if he was fouled in a challenge by Walton’s
Omar Folkes. He went on and whipped the ball
in behind the central defenders and Odunaike
did the rest, while the challenge which seemed
to miss the ball and catch Steventon saw him
hobble out of the rest of the game.
Ita’s cleverly chipped free-kick found Carlse
who headed home to pull a goal back.
The goals were flooding in and Walton scored
again two minutes later with Odunaike beating
Molloy in a one-on-one. But this goal came on
the break direct from a Walton goal-kick which
for all the world looked as if it should have
been a corner awarded to Sittingbourne.
Hat-trick man Odunaike hit the bar, but Walton
still added another deep into injury time when
Nicholson comfortably stroked home a 20-yard
free-kick.
Still Sittingbourne weren’t done and Ita scored
the final goal of a weird game in the seventh
minute of added time with a beautiful left-footer
into the far corner from outside the box.
Sittingbourne: Molloy, Brunt, Lee, Whibley,
Crimmen, Steventon (Richardson 74 mins), Allen,
Carlse, Hurcomb (Cornwell 59 mins), Hughes
(Emerby 72 mins), Ita

Our core business is to provide cost management services
to the construction industry. Our client base includes
subcontractors, contractors, corporates, private
businesses and public sector organisations. We adopt
industry accepted approaches to cost management/
procurement. We apply these diligently and conscientiously
to each project.
Our staff regularly undertake CPD training and university
studies in order to keep abreast of developments
in the industry. In addition to our collective experience
and expertise, Our software systems enable us to deliver
efficient services to our clients. We are also currently
looking at ways in which we can further benefit
our clients using Building Information Model [BIM].
Many of QS Consults’ clients are already involved in the construction industry with
our services complementing their own. By way of example with public sector clients
we can prepare cost studies (including market testing) to enable them to make
more informed decisions regarding proposed projects and estates strategies.
On the other hand for contractors and sub-contractor’s we provide estimating and
tendering services allowing them to focus on their core business of delivering construction
projects. Just some of our projects are shown below:
Some clients we work with may have never been involved in construction before
and may be considering a one-off construction project. As quantity surveyors we
can provide guidance on managing costs and how to minimise costs risks associated
with construction projects. Some clients we work with may have never been involved
SO NOW we know then. Wembley will reverberate to the sound of four sets of supporters on
one day – the line-up for the experiment which may shape the future of Non-League’s premier
cup competitions has been confirmed.
Morpeth, Hereford, Halifax and Grimsby fans will all be under one roof (well, if the weather
turns!)
The FA Vase kicking off at 12.15pm and the Trophy four hours later.
Non-League Finals Day on Sunday May 22, a festival of football, is a one-off but should it be
successful, this first will probably not be the last.
Credit where it’s due. We’ve banged the drum for this for some time and the Football Association
have made a brave call and will try something new and untested to breathe some much
needed new life into the games.
Make no mistake, it’s a logistical nightmare for them. It’s hard enough to police two sets of supporters,
but four – all inside the stadium at one point – will be a challenge, as will the running
times.
Extra time in the first game and a delayed presentation may get the Wembley suits uncomfortable
in the posh seats, while a Sunday League-style tussle for the changing rooms will see the
cleaner’s speed to scrub be tested to its fullest should the FA Vase go the whole way.
You could of course argue the only reason the FA are giving this a whirl is because it will save a
lot of money having to open Wembley’s heavy doors on two separate weekends, but there’s a
fascination and excitement about how the whole day will unfold.
They have taken stick. Just when the governing body were getting props for their unconventional
methods, they leave themselves exposed to a return to the tutting and the eye-rolling.
Non-League Finals Day isn’t exclusive after all. England are playing, albeit in Manchester and
yes later on, the fear is that the Three Lions’ Euro warm up with Turkey will steal national focus.
It’s an opportunity missed to dedicate a day to the Trophy and the Vase. There’s no reason at
why England couldn’t play on the Saturday and leave all the attention to what’s going on under
the Arch.
But let’s not hammer the FA at every chance possible. The point remains that they have taken a
gamble, risked the wrath of the traditionalists and brought life to both competitions when it was
desperately needed.
Yet the biggest thumbs up must be for the prices – rarely will you say that about Wembley.
You can watch the entire day for £25, with concessions for £10. Do you know a youngster who
has yet to see their national stadium? Bring them along for £1.
In fairness, it’s a fantastic bargain. Just remember to bring your own sarnies!
