Mastering Your Craft
Introduction…the call, the path
To mark the 10th year and 50th issue of Rapport we introduce a new
inspiring and enlightening series of articles from leading life coach,
speaker and business coach Rasheed Ogunlaru to help you become a
master of your craft. The series invites you to embrace, explore and utilise the
often invisible, intangible, unseen and under-appreciated qualities that will
help you master your craft and enjoy more flow and impact in your work. In
this article Rasheed introduces the subjects which will be covered.
The call, the path
In life there are no certainties – no guarantees. As you start
walking down the path of following your life’s work – while
you may have vivid dreams – you have no idea of where it
will actually lead. But after a while all the other paths vanish
and you become one with that path which is uniquely yours.
That moment, that realisation – right then – is when you
know are on track!
The journey of being a NLP practitioner, trainer or coach
is a fascinating one. Ours is one of the fields that helps,
heals, supports, teaches, empowers and enables. It is a gift.
The invitation is for you to become one with your work and
to do your life’s work. It is not merely a job, a practice, a
business. It is much more.
You may be starting out in your training or you may be
years or decades in. Like the call of an athlete or a martial
artist the series will whisper, beckon, nudge and urge you to
master your craft, shine and serve.
2 Awareness, attention and intention
You can become good at what you do by
putting in the time and effort but it’s not
enough to become great at it. It’s also not
enough to help you notice and navigate your
way through the personal and professional
challenges you will face. As you become more
still, silent and centred you will become more
alert and aware. It’s this quality that will help
you tune into your customer’s needs, what’s
going on for you personally and in your industry
and wider society.
Your practice/business will (need to) change
slightly or radically as society does. Any of us who have been employed and
faced restructure or redundancy knows that. There’s more to this though early
on and as you progress the ‘great’ NLP practitioner, coach or trainer will become
aware of and align with their intention. Intention blended with attention
becomes powerful and you will be carrying out your work ‘on purpose’ and
ironically a true master purpose is always to serve and elevate one and all.
1 Gifts, talents and potential
As a coach I meet too many people
who play shy of their gifts or who are
unaware of them. You must spot your
potential and passions and nurture them.
So that’s where we’ll start, so you can
acknowledge your gifts and follow your
life’s work. As you read this, I invite you
to begin that process. What are your
gifts and talents? Which do you use,
which do you overlook and which are
under-used?
2The invitation
is for you to
become one
with your work
