STANFORD MEDICINE X | HEALTH CARE INNOVATION DESIGNED FOR EVERYONE academy MEDICINE The Stanford Medicine X Academy aims to change the culture of health care by creating a community dedicated to addressing gaps in medical education that are most important to stakeholders. We aim to make health care education easily accessible, empower all stakeholders to learn together and from each other, and to begin these interactions earlier in the educational process. The central gap we aim to focus on with The Academy is the role patients, technologists and researchers can play in changing the culture of health care to be more participatory, patient-centered, and responsive to the problems that matter most to all stakeholders in health care. The Academy comprises our formal learning opportunities. Representing the very latest in the evolution of thought regarding medical education, these courses and classes equip future health professionals, entrepreneurs, emerging executives and leaders, and other interested parties to bring Everyone Included to bear in their own organizations. Participants complete these offerings with a full understanding of learning in the 21st century, patient-centered discovery and care, devising inventions targeted at specific health-care needs, and leading inclusive teams that value the contributions of all. STANFORD COURSES Medicine X leads several courses at the Stanford University School of Medicine, including: Medical Education in the New Millennium (ANES 204) Focus is on the unique learning preferences and needs of today’s Millennial medical learners (medical students, residents, fellows, practicing physicians, nurses, pharmacists, allied medical professionals) and the role thoughtful learning design and use of technology can play in meeting their unique needs. Grounded in learning theory, this colloquium course will provide accessible information for learners at all levels to understand learning design and use of educational technologies in the new Millennium. Features speakers from wide range of medical education-related fields, including experts in instructional design, learning theory and medical education technologies. Engage + Empower Me: Myths and Truths of Designing for Patient Behavior (ANES 205) Focus is on patient stories and real-life experiences of patient engagement, the neuroscience of behavior change and the principles of patient engagement.Together with patients, students participate in design sessions at Stanford’s simulation center to create and test ways to modify behavior through design. Topics include the neuroscience behind motivating individuals into healthy behaviors, including patients in the care design process, how health educators, designers, techies and investors can improve success. Students enrolling for 3 units complete a class project. Design for Health: Applying Design Innovation to Improve Health Care (ANES 207) Explores the crucial role design can play in optimizing health care. Focuses on principles of design-thinking and patient-centered design, and examines their impact on innovating solutions to healthcare problems. Goal is to understand how healthcare providers might better design for health. Includes presentations from patients and design experts. 3D Printing and Biofabrication (ANES 20) This course explores the future of 3D printing and its impact on health and medicine. What if medications or prosthetics could be fabricated using modern tools for mass customization? Scientists are already working to fabricate human organs from living cells. Additive manufacturing – often termed 3D printing – uses automated techniques to produce physical objects using layer-by-layer construction methods. Biofabrication applies these same techniques to print physical objects from biological cells. Such techniques hold great promise to transform health and medicine to deliver more personalized care solutions for patients. 24
STANFORD UNIVERSITY <strong>2016</strong> Monika Witting, director of the Live Architecture Network (LaN) and co-lead of the MedXMakers initiative, leads a workshop on the medical applications of 3D printing and biofabrication at the inaugural Medicine X | Ed conference. LAUNCH! FOR HEALTH CARE STARTUPS Launch! for Health Startups leverages structured methods developed by Stanford Medicine X that provide health care and business fundamentals necessary for venture success. This educational program for startup leaders, innovators, entrepreneurs, and their partners, consists of instruction in health care design as well as practical knowledge on how to navigate the health care industry to produce successful ventures. Through case studies, project-based learning, collaborations, and presentations, participants will complete the program with well-vetted, refined ideas ready to pitch to venture capitalists. This four week immersive and interactive bootcamp course will focus on how to use the Stanford Medicine X Everyone Included design-thinking methodology to focus on problems that matter most in health care. We provide fundamental knowledge of the health care industry and teach operational and tactical knowledge to navigate the industry to produce successful ventures. EXECUTIVE EDUCATION PROGRAMS Stanford Medicine X Executive Education courses take executives out of the classroom and the boardroom to experience what patient engagement truly means. Long a buzzword for healthcare organizations, patient engagement comes to life as you learn how including patients in design and implementation can position your company to develop drugs, devices, and other interventions that create value and hit their mark in the marketplace. Our course Co-creating Value through Patient-Centered Innovation will help executives bring the Medicine X Everyone Included innovation model to their organizations. This two-day immersive and interactive course will focus on how organizations and health care leaders can engage patient experts to co-create value and drive patient-centered innovation throughout the health care enterprise. To what extent can patients untap value for your organization? How might industry improve efficiency and drive innovation through patient input? How are patient experts identified and nurtured as co-creators in health care? Is your institution ready for patient-centered innovation? If so, how do you take the next steps toward implementation. If not, how can you prepare your organization for impending change? 25
