PRESIDENT’S WELCOME
Johanne Wright - President
A very warm welcome to our 15th
annual Noosa Long Weekend
Festival. This is a special anniversary
year. So come and celebrate with
us from our Friday opening street
parade and beach spectacular to the
last Sunday when we are hosting the
Italian Long Lunch at the Waterfront
and Keith Potger AO (original member
of The Seekers) is presenting an up
close and personal Dinner Show at
the Boathouse.
As usual the Festival would not be possible
without our outstanding volunteers,
dressed this year in gold and black, our
dedicated and hard-working Festival
Director and our office staff, and all the
other wonderful people who make up our
team during and before the Festival.
I owe a deep debt to the phenomenal
dedication of our management committee
who go the extra yards to make the Festival
a reality. Our wonderfully generous
Patrons, our very supportive Festival
Sponsors and our Friends of the Festival
are an integral and very important part of
our team. Finally, I want to thank all those
other organisations and cultural partners
who join with us to put on the best show
in town. Thank you one and all for your
support.
Please come and say hello, bring your
friends and family, and have a fantastic
time.
(Channel 7’s The Great South East and The Sunday Mail)
“I am beyond excited about the
amazing 2016 program for this year’s
Noosa Long Weekend Festival and
feel extremely honoured to serve as
Festival Ambassador for this wonderful
event as it celebrates its 15th year.
NLWF is one of my very favourite annual
festivals in Queensland and each year it has
been with great anticipation and enthusiasm
that I have made the beautiful drive up from
Brisbane to Noosa to bask in the festival’s
exciting vibe and experience the variety
of exceptional arts, cultural and culinary
offerings it serves up in abundance.
I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity
to promote this unique festival through my
role as the 2016 ambassador and hope that it
will enjoy record-breaking numbers this year,
as this is truly one of the Sunshine State’s
best events that I encourage everyone to
place on their must-do list for 2016.
Hope to see you all in July!”
FINAL PERFORMANCES!
ONCE
WERE LEADERS
AN EVENING WITH MAX GILLIES
A stalwart of political satire, funnyman Max Gillies brings his show to
NLWF this July, cataloguing some of his most infamous characters in
Once Were Leaders.
Is Australia suffering a leadership deficit? There was a time when politicians could
inspire us. But were they really better than the current crop or has our perception
benefited from the passage of time?
Max Gillies has been a keen observer of the political combat zone for half a century.
His fascination with the ups and downs of political leadership has seen him parody
everyone from Hawke to Thatcher and many more.
Once Max used to apply make-up, wigs and prosthetic enhancements in order
to disguise himself. He doesn’t have those bits and pieces anymore. But he has
accumulated a rich collection of caricatures. Once Were Leaders sees Max share
his memories of a life spent on the fringes of power, mining the archives for his
favourite game changing speeches.
Max Gillies portrays the following characters during the show:
• Bob Hawke
• Paul Keating
• Graham Richardson
• Kevin Rudd
• John Howard
• Malcolm Fraser
• Margaret Thatcher (UK)
• Ronald Reagan (US)
LOCAL AUTHORS
IN CONVERSATION
Moderator: Gail Forrer, Seniors Newspaper Group
What is it that allows a book to resonate with its readers?
Plot, character, location, style?
No doubt it is some combination of
all of the above. In our local author’s
forum, three of SE Queensland’s talented
authors will give us their thoughts on the
importance of ‘place’ in their writing.
Join Annah Faulkner, Susan Johnson
and Inga Simpson for this conversation
as they discuss influence of their own
locations in the development of settings
and subject matter.
There is certain to be some fascinating
author insights into their writings.
Annah Faulkner
Annah Faulkner’s debut novel, The
Beloved, won the Kibble Literary Award,
the Queensland Premier’s Literary Award
for an Emerging Queensland Author,
and was shortlisted for the 2013 Miles
Franklin Award. Last Day in the Dynamite
Factory is her second novel.
Susan Johnson
Susan Johnson’s novel The Landing
observes what it is to be human and to
love: the betrayals, the long and the short
alliances, the disappointments and the
joys. In 2010, Susan returned from ten
years in London and is a feature writer at
Q weekend magazine.
Inga Simpson
Inga Simpson began her career as a
professional writer for government
before gaining a PhD in creative writing.
Her first novel Mr Wigg was followed by
Nest in 2014, subsequently long listed for
the 2015 Miles Franklin Award. Her new
work is Where the Trees Were.
NOOSA LONG WEEKEND FESTIVAL
IN ASSOCIATION WITH
NOOSA FILM SOCIETY PRESENT
GRAVITAS
AND SPEAR
SPECTACULAR DOUBLE SCREENING
GRAVITAS
Inspired by the choreographic work
of Penelope Mullen’s ‘Danse Noir’
which premiered in Brisbane 2014,
Gravitas was born.
Join Penelope ‘In Conversation’ about
the making of Gravitas followed by a
screening of this enthralling art-dance
short film.
While observing Penelope rehearse
the live dance work, renowned author
Stephen Schofield spontaneously penned
evocative words in which he described
the spirit and articulation of the dancers
as they traversed the space with a sense
of gravitas.
And so emerged Gravitas, a film featuring
extraordinary dancers captured by film
makers Richard Keenan and Guy Calaf.
Co-Produced by Louise Howden – Smith
and conceived and choreographed by
Penelope Mullen.
Filmed in the crystal caves at Yanchep,
WA, the film explores the reverence one
feels when immersed within the grandeur
of nature’s architecture.
SPEAR
A young man reconciles ancient
tradition with the modern, urban
world in this debut feature from
Stephen Page, artistic director of
Australia’s renowned Bangarra
Dance Theatre.
This visually arresting film may be
Stephen Page’s directorial debut, but
Page is no stranger to the telling of stories
through movement and images.
As artistic director of the world-renowned
Bangarra Dance Theatre, he has spent
over twenty years interpreting the stories
of Indigenous Australians for global
stages. Now Page brings Bangarra’s
outstanding dance work Spear to the
THE HEAT
‘IN CONVERSATION’
WITH GARRY DISHER
Moderator: Phil Brown,
News Limited
THE HEAT
Wyatt needs a job. A bank job would be
nice, or a security van hold-up. As long
as he doesn’t have to work with cocky
idiots and strung-out meth-heads like
the Pepper brothers. That’s the sort of
miscalculation that buys you the wrong
kind of time.
So he contacts a man who in the past put
him on the right kind of heist. And finds
himself in Noosa, stealing a painting for
Hannah Sten. He knows how it’s done:
case the premises, set up escape routes
and failsafes, get in and get out with the
goods unrecognised. Make a good plan;
back it up with another. And be very, very
careful.
But who is his client? Who else wants that
painting? Sometimes, being very careful
is not enough.
GARRY DISHER
Garry Disher has published almost
fifty titles - fiction, children’s books,
anthologies, textbooks, the Wyatt
thrillers and the Mornington Peninsula
mysteries. He has won numerous awards,
including the German Crime Prize (twice)
and two Ned Kelly Best Crime novel
BREAKFAST WITH HUGH MACKAY
Moderator: Phil Brown, News Limited
BEYOND BELIEF
Hear one of Australia’s most
respected authors and social
researchers Hugh Mackay talk
about his new book, Beyond Belief:
How we find meaning, with or
without religion.
At a time when 61 percent of Australians
still identify as Christian but only 8
percent attend church weekly, Mackay
tackles one of the big questions about
contemporary Australia: how do we find
our sense of meaning and purpose when
religious faith and practice are in such
sharp decline? (And why are enrolments
at church schools skyrocketing?)
He draws on research suggesting that
our quest for a meaningful life depends
on believing in something ‘greater
than ourselves’ and explores what
that ‘something’ might be for today’s
Australians.
Hugh will be interviewed by Phil Brown.
Arts Editor - The Courier-Mail, Deputy
Editor - CANVAS, News Queensland.
HUGH MACKAY
Social researcher and the author of
seventeen books - eleven in the field of
social analysis and ethics, and six novels.
He is a Fellow of the Australian
Psychological Society and has been
awarded honorary doctorates by Charles
Moderator: Gail Forrer,
SPIRITS OF THE GHAN
Bestselling Australian author
Judy Nunn AM has based many of
her novels in remote locations
across Australia. When travelling
on The Ghan three years ago with
husband, author Bruce Venables,
she was instantly inspired.
Spirits of the Ghan tells the tale of two
people involved in completing The Ghan:
Jess Manning, an indigenous Australian
whose role as negotiator between the
Elders and the railway has earnt her
respect amongst all involved with the
project, and Matthew Witherton, a senior
surveyor overseeing the construction of
the line. When their paths finally cross,
their respective cultures collide to reveal
a mystery that demands attention, and
could well affect the completion of the
mighty railway.
JUDY NUNN AM
Judy Nunn’s career has been long,
illustrious and multifaceted. After
combining her internationally successful
acting career with scriptwriting for
television and radio, Judy decided in the
90s to turn her hand to prose.
Her first three novels, The Glitter Game,
Centre Stage and Araluen, set respectively
in the worlds of television, theatre and
film, became instant bestsellers, and the
rest is history, quite literally in fact.
In 2015 Judy was made a Member of
the Order of Australia for her ‘significant
service to the performing arts as a
scriptwriter and actor of stage and
screen, and to literature as an author’.
