2004 Malaysia’s first official halal standard was published as MS1500:2004 – <strong>Halal</strong> Food – Production, Preparation,<br />
Handling and Storage – General Guidelines. A second revision was published in 2009 as MS150:2009.<br />
2004 MIHAS was founded by Shapers Malaysia and in 2008, ownership of this <strong>Halal</strong> trade expo was transferred to the<br />
Malaysian government under the auspices of the Malaysia External Trade and Development Corporation (MATRADE).<br />
The Incoming Buying Mission programme was first introduced during The Malaysian International <strong>Halal</strong> Showcase<br />
(MIHAS) 2005 by Matrade.<br />
2005 Australian Government Authorised <strong>Halal</strong> Program (AGAHP) came into effect requiring establishments to have<br />
documented procedures for the preparation, slaughter, identification, processing, segregation and certification of<br />
halal meat, as well as registration for approved Islamic organizations, slaughtermen and inspectors.<br />
2005 World <strong>Halal</strong> Council completed their first halal standard to present to the OIC for authorization.<br />
2006 The first World <strong>Halal</strong> Forum was held in Kuala Lumpur to gather major industry stakeholders to discuss issues in the<br />
halal marketplace.<br />
2006 The <strong>Halal</strong> Industry Development Corporation was established to coordinate the overall development of the halal<br />
industry in Malaysia.<br />
2007 Brunei Darussalam launched a Standard for <strong>Halal</strong> Food (PBD24:2007) and the Brunei Darussalam Certification<br />
Guideline for <strong>Halal</strong> Certificate and <strong>Halal</strong> Label – Guideline for <strong>Halal</strong> Certification (BCG <strong>Halal</strong> 1 – First Edition 2007)<br />
2008 Gulf Cooperation Council Standardization Organization (GSO) launched its draft halal standard GSO 1931 <strong>Halal</strong><br />
Food Part 1: General Requirements.<br />
2010 SMIIC, an affiliate body of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) was established with the main objectives<br />
to prepare OIC/SMIIC halal standards to achieve uniformity in metrology, laboratory, testing and standardization. A<br />
total of 31 member states out of the 56 OIC Islamic states are currently members.<br />
2010 The European Committee for Standardization (CEN) set up a Working Group to analyse the feasibility of a European<br />
standard on halal food. At the time of this report the CEN standard for halal food is still a work in progress involving<br />
a larger working group.<br />
2012 ITC initiates projects to support institutional capacity building in halal standards and enhance SME competitiveness<br />
by connecting them with new halal markets.<br />
2012 The Emirates Standards and Metrology Authority (ESMA) finalized a halal standard for cosmetics and perfumes<br />
as part of SMIIC halal standards, becoming the technical regulatory authority for OIC for perfumes and cosmetics<br />
including personal care items like toothpaste, skin care products etc.<br />
2013 Dubai held the first <strong>Global</strong> Islamic Economy Summit (GIES). As part of the Dubai: Capital of Islamic Economy<br />
initiative, GIES 2013 defined six pillars within the Islamic economy as finance, food, travel, fashion, media and<br />
recreation, pharmaceutical and cosmetics.<br />
2013 Dubai Islamic Economy Development Centre (DIEDC) was formed as the focal point of the Dubai: Capital of Islamic<br />
Economy initiative.<br />
2013 The first State of the <strong>Global</strong> Islamic Economy Report was published by DIEDC, in collaboration with Thompson<br />
Reuters and DinarStandard<br />
2015 The National <strong>Halal</strong> Mark for <strong>Halal</strong> certification, developed by the Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology,<br />
was used to certify two companies after the logo was officially released at the Gulfood Exhibition 2015 in Dubai.<br />
2015 Pakistan <strong>Halal</strong> Authority was launched as the first governmental legal body at a national level for the halal sector<br />
to develop the long-term strategies and plans for the development of halal production and commerce. It was also<br />
tasked with developing halal standards and procedures for the national standards body.<br />
2015 Dubai launches the first Islamic Economy Portal. The portal is being designed to serve as a global reference for the<br />
burgeoning Shariah-compliant economic sector.
