7. GOUDU<br />

The Goudus are a pastoral tribe in the agency tracts <strong>of</strong> Andhra Pradesh <strong>and</strong> they are<br />

recognized as Scheduled Tribe in the agency area <strong>of</strong> Srikakulam, Vizianagaram <strong>and</strong><br />

Visakhapatnam districts. They inhabit predominantly the hill tracts <strong>of</strong> Araku valley, Paderu,<br />

Munching put <strong>areas</strong> <strong>of</strong> Visakhapatnam district. According to 1991 census their populati<strong>on</strong> is<br />

11,279. The total literacy rate am<strong>on</strong>g Goudu is 17.78.<br />

The entire Goudu tribe is divided into twelve endogamous sub-divisi<strong>on</strong>s which are<br />

further divided into exogamous clans such as 1) Korra (Sun), 2) Pangi (Kite), 3) Killo (tiger)<br />

4) Vanthala (Snake), 5) Samardhi (flower) etc.,<br />

Goudus <strong>of</strong> East Godavari district speak Telugu <strong>and</strong> those living in Visakhapatnam,<br />

Vizianagaram <strong>and</strong> Srikakulam speak Adivasi Oriya.<br />

They practice shifting cultivati<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> also settled cultivati<strong>on</strong> in the valley l<strong>and</strong>s. The<br />

main occupati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> Goudus <strong>of</strong> interior villages is cattle rearing.<br />

The popular ways <strong>of</strong> acquiring mates are through negotiati<strong>on</strong>s, capture, love <strong>and</strong><br />

elopement <strong>and</strong> service. Levirate type <strong>of</strong> marriage is also in vogue. The Goudus have their<br />

traditi<strong>on</strong>al community council known as ‘Kula Panchayath which maintains their customary<br />

laws settles disputes <strong>and</strong> imposes fine <strong>on</strong> the <strong>of</strong>fenders.<br />

8. HILL REDDY<br />

The Hill Reddis inhabiting the hill tracts flanking the Godavari River in Khammam<br />

district subsist <strong>on</strong> Podu cultivati<strong>on</strong>. Hill Reddy is the English name given to K<strong>on</strong>da Reddies<br />

in some parts <strong>of</strong> the erstwhile State <strong>of</strong> Hyderabad.<br />

The Hill Reddy tribe is enumerated separately. According to 1991 census the<br />

populati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> Hill Reddy is 432. The total literacy rate am<strong>on</strong>g Hill Reddy is 26.62. Most <strong>of</strong><br />

them are living in Khammam district.<br />

9. JATAPUS<br />

Jatapus are an acculturated <strong>and</strong> Teluguised secti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> Kh<strong>on</strong>d Tribe. Most <strong>of</strong> them are<br />

found living in Srikakulam <strong>and</strong> the present Vizianagaram districts. The populati<strong>on</strong> according<br />

to 1991 census reports is 1,04,804. The total literacy rate am<strong>on</strong>g Jatapu is 17.51.
