KEY AREA:
THE MAIN ENTRANCE
The main entrance is the reception area, leading
to Kendall Hall and the SLT / LRC corridors.
Reception is the area where visitors to the
academy sign in and out. (Students sign in at
student services and out at reception if going to
an appointment during the day). Before the
entrance you can see a war memorial dedicated
to former students who died in the First and
Second World War.
KEY AREA:
SLT (SENIOR LEADERSHIP TEAM) CORRIDOR
This corridor is where the Principal, Vice principals,
Assistant Principals and the Finance Office is. Here,
you can get praise for special occasions such as,
this year the Y7 football team went as they won the
league playoff final and had drinks and biscuits
with the principal. As it is where important meetings
take place, only year 11-13 students can go
through the corridor during the school day, unless
you have a meeting with a member of staff or need
to go to the finance office before registration or at
break e.g. to pay for a school trip.

KEY AREA:
STUDENT SERVICES
Student services is where you go at break or lunch if
you have any problems. We have this so students are
never upset or sad in lessons. Here you will find the
Achievement officer and Learning Leader for each year
group. It is also where they can find Mrs Hussain,
Student Services Reception and the Medical Room.
Another purpose of student services is that if people
have been particularly well or poorly behaved, they go
there to get told off or praised. Lost property is also kept
here. If you lose something please have a look for it in
the lost property box. (Make sure all your belongings
have your name clearly labelled!)
KEY AREA:
MAYO HALL
In Mayo hall you have your lunch and you can
also buy snacks. The dinners you can buy are
AMAZING! There is a wide variety of meals
including pasta and burgers, a full cooked meal
and desert, as well as loads of drinks. There is
an additional dining area which is used by year
11 students.
KEY AREA:
FRANKLAND HALL
Frankland Hall is also used as a lunch area
and serves snacks at break and pasta and
baguettes. You may also have your drama
or PE lessons here.
*the halls are named after previous
head teachers of Ossett Academy.

KEY AREA:
THE NEW DRAMA STUDIO
The new drama studio, or as we know it, D2, is
where some students have their drama lesson.
We have this drama studio, so all students
(especially the gifted, talented and passionate)
can enjoy a drama lesson every week. This
studio is accessible to all year groups; however
some students have their drama lessons in D1,
downstairs, or Frankland Hall.
KEY AREA:
KENDALL HALL
Here you will usually have your assembly.
Assembly takes place each day for different
year groups, for example year 7 currently has
their assembly each Friday morning. In the first
week, each year group have an assembly on
the first day of term. Assemblies are focused on
a range of themes that support student
personal development and also praise student
achievements. Kendall is also the home to the
stage where all the productions take place. At
lunch you can eat your packed lunch here.
KEY AREA:
LANGUAGE BLOCK
All students will study a language up to year
9, then they can continue to study it up to
GCSE level. Year 7 study either French or
Spanish. There are also clubs at lunch time
e.g. culture club with fun activities and food
from specific cultures.

KEY AREA:
THE LRC
The LRC stands for the “Learning
Resources Centre”. Here you can do
homework, read a book and research on
computers. Students from all year groups
have access to the LRC, some students
may come to research a topic during their
lesson or to help develop their
homework. There is also a wide range of
books from many different genres and
reading abilities. The LRC also provides
teachers and form tutors with book boxes
to help support and develop class based
learning. There are always staff on hand
in the LRC who can help you to locate the
resource you need.
LRC Rules:
No eating/drinking
Must be quiet
Phones must be switched off
KEY AREA:
YEAR 7 LOCKERS
Year 7 lockers are located by Frankland Hall. Students must bring a sturdy lock on day two, identify a
friend with whom they wish to share a locker and then after choosing a locker and noting the number,
inform student services of the number of the locker.

KEY AREA:
ALL WEATHER SURFACE (COMMONLY KNOWN AS THE REDGRA)
At the Redgra many people come up here on a lunch time to play football, kick a rugby ball about or
just to have a nice chat with their friends. The pitches are also used for P.E lessons. This court is split into
netball courts , tennis courts, rounder’s and cricket.
This gives more space for people to play and go to during break and lunch time. It is also an outdoor
facility to be able to play sports on for both male and female.
Importantly, the all-weather surface is also a fire drill assembly area. Each form has a number and you
line up in silence in register order in front of your number. Fire drill tests are held throughout the year.
KEY AREA:
CAR PARK
Students are not allowed here or to cross through it. Students are also not allowed to walk down the
main driveway, with the exception of 6 th form students.

KEY AREA:
SCIENCE BLOCK
In the Science block there are specialised
laboratories which are used for
experiments and also for Science club. In
Science club we have completed a beauty
workshop and this term we did a dissection.
The Science lessons you do are mainly
practicals, but some lessons are focused on
writing or tests.
KEY AREA:
ORCHARD
The Orchard is an amazing place to stay at
break and lunch. This is an invite only place for
students who need extra support if they are
having a difficult time in areas of their life.
Hazel runs the Orchard and she helps you with
confidence in her nurture group. Students who
go here are able to invite friends.
KEY AREA:
MANGLISH BLOCK
Manglish is Maths and English in one, and the
manglish block is simply the building where these
lessons take place. There are lots of classrooms
there, including the two drama suites, but the lesson
that happens there the most is maths. There is
another block directly opposite and three huts that
house a total of 3 classrooms that majority English
takes place in.

KEY AREA:
FITNESS SUITE
The fitness suite is a place for people to get fit
if they don’t have the facilities to do so at home
or outside of school. In Spring 2015, it was
updated with lots of new and exciting
equipment! You will have an induction in P.E.
telling you how to use the equipment, which is
all brand new. You are able to use the fitness
suite when it is your day and use it free of
charge.
KEY AREA:
ADT BLOCK
The ADT block is where students of all
years do wood work, food tech, and
sewing. We have this block of classrooms
to give all students, especially the
particularly creative ones, the chance to
express their artistic side, with fabulous end
products. There is a separate block for the
other art/ADT projects.
KEY AREA:
THE 6TH FORM
COLLEGE BUILDING
This is where sixth form lessons are based
as well as their common room.

Students’ Views
Ossett Academy is an amazing school that many people
wish to get into. Unfortunately not everyone gets in, but if you
do then you are lucky because there are many privileges
when coming here such as going abroad to Germany and
America and many more. You will have the opportunity to do
performances, music showcases and join some fantastic
clubs.
Things to look forward to:
• The clubs
• Meeting new friends
• Science Experiments • Meeting your teachers
• Food tech
Fears and Worries
Getting lost is one of the things that nearly everyone moving
up to Ossett Academy worries about, but you can simply ask
a pupil in an older year to show you to the classroom that
you can’t find.
By Joe Burman &
Matthew Roe
When I was in primary school we worried about older
students not being nice to us but when I started, I tried to
interact with the kids who are nice (and I also have older
brothers that can help me with any problems).
Don’t worry about homework because you don’t get as much
as you expect! You will get around five pieces of homework
a week which is not bad as there are thirteen lessons per
week.

By Sasha Callaghan
& Macey Sheard
Hello, we know that you are probably feeling worried and scared of
coming up to Ossett Academy but really it’s not all that bad. We know
how it feels to be scared of being late to lessons, getting a detention,
been lost and forgetting homework. However in the first couple of
weeks the teachers help a lot and so do all the students at Ossett
Academy. If you’re late to lessons, then don’t worry - explain to the
teachers and we are sure everything will be okay. When you get to
Ossett Academy there are more interesting lessons and things to do
such as; rugby, football, hockey, rounder’s, netball, cricket, languages,
ADT, drama, science and music .
You may worry about being bullied… DON’T! Everyone at Ossett Academy is really nice (they
won’t bite!). Some people worry about getting lost but there is always someone to ask. Even we
had to ask someone at some point but really so did everyone. Now however, we both know
where everything is around school and the only way we now know all of this is because we
asked. If you have any other worries or queries you can always ask an achievement officer at
student services.
THINGS TO LOOK FORWARD TO:
• All the new clubs you can do after school and at lunch.
• The new P.E lessons.
• The in-depth Art and Technology lessons.
• Improved science lessons and practicals.
• The wide variety of books in the LRC.
• Drama and cooking lessons.
• The new and improved Fitness suite.
High school. Scary, exiting and all the stomach churning
feelings in-between. I know what it is likes on that first day
of your ‘new life’ as a ‘big kid’ at Ossett academy, but it‘s
nothing to be scared of at all. On your first day, the
timetable is straight forward; form, form, form, double form
and FORM! (which is the class you go to at the start of
every day and never move from). The other kids aren’t even
in school so you don’t have to worry about stampedes. But
hey, before I lose my train of thought completely, let’s get
on with it…
Fears and Worries
So these are the biggest worries that were on my mind. And before I sound unbelievable, just trust
me on this one…
• Getting lost
• Detentions
• And homework
I will go through each one as best as I can.
Getting lost is the most common fear I have heard. Once you know your way it all seems so small!
There will be staff all around school to give you directions if you get lost. If you are 5 minutes late
you won’t get detention, so please don’t stress!

Students’ Views
I know what you’re thinking... ‘Arghh!’
You’re about to face one of the biggest, most amazing events in
your childhood life, and all you think is ‘Arghh!’ Well, I don’t
blame you, that’s exactly how I felt too. To be honest, there’s no
need to be scared, It’s the best school EVER!
By Abbie Houghton
This is what happened on my first day:
I got to school, my stomach felt like a butterfly zoo (I don’t know what that’s supposed to be …),
and I went to my form room . Form is a group of people who are like your school family, and you
go to your form for 20 minutes every morning. From there on it was just an ordinary school day,
apart from ten times better!!!
Fears and worries
What if I don’t have any friends? What if I can’t do the work? What if I get into trouble all the time?
What if? What if? What if? Well there is no need to be scared or worried about Ossett academy.
Let’s start with friends. I don’t know anybody who doesn’t have any friends; every single person at
the school has loads of friends. “What about work?” you say. Well work is no problem whatsoever.
Everyone is given work that they can do, and put into a class due to the quality of work they can
produce. Trouble? You only get into trouble if you disrespect other students, and your teachers.
Things to look forward to
You can look forward to lots of trips, clubs, fun lessons and the home learning project. This year I
am going to London, Cologne(Germany), 2 book club trips, and the Leeds Christmas markets, so
you have all of these trips and more to look forward to. There are loads of clubs, such as creative
writing club, science club, book club, and many more!

at Ossett. Make sure you have all the
equipment you need such as pens, pencils,
ruler, rubber and pencil sharpener.
It would be a good idea
to have a spare tie, just in case!

EDUCATIONAL
TRIPS
There are so many fantastic opportunities at Ossett Academy, including a wide range of
enrichments and educational visits. At Ossett Academy you will have the opportunity to go to
the theatre, Ski in Europe or in the USA, visit a wide range of European cities for example
Barcelona and Cologne. We also have a year 7 visit to London. This year 60 year 7s will visit
